Unknown computer shows up in Finder, am I hacked?

H - got home tonight and notice a new Mac Book Pro icon under Shared in Finder. It is named "Lupin3d's Mac Book Pro" and it is "Not Connected". I don't see any option to connect to it.
I have a Mac Pro tower named "Mac" and I am certain no Mac Book Pro laptop has ever knowingly been on my network. There is a Windows machine also on the network but not named like that.
We live in an apartment building so this could be a Mac Book Pro in some other apartment in the building. We have wireless which has WEP enabled and a very long gibberish password.
My Mac Pro has bluetooth enabled for the mouse. I did not have Firewall enabled on my Mac Pro as we sit behind router NAT firewall so didn't think it was needed.
How is it possible this foreign MBP appears in my Shared list under my Finder window?
Am I compromised? Should I be concerned? I don't see how this Lupin3d MBP could possibly be on my machine unless it had gained access to my local network (having hacked WEP on the router?) which just seems really unlikely. Is there some easier way one Mac can connect to another without being on the same local network?
This is my first Mac, so please forgive the newbie questions, I'm not entirely familiar with attach vectors in Mac world. All advice gratefully received. thanks!

hi KT
thank you very much for replying
I ran who and it just shows my user name logged in twice (once for console, about the time i rebooted last yesterday, and once just now when i fired up Terminal). However I checked iTunes and yes, I have it set to Look for Shared Libraries. Do you think perhaps that is why I can see this unknown machine?
If it is iTunes, I'm still curious to know how my Mac can see the other Mac, when there is no network in common?
thanks again for your reply, i appreciate it
Adrian

  • An unknown computer shows up under SHARED in Finder

An unknown computer (named "mac001b63aca152) that its info shows that it is PC Server shows up under SHARED in Finder. Is there a way I can be sure it doesn't have access to my files and also is it possible to remove it from the SHARED list?
    Thanks in advance,
    Behrang

I have seen a number like that "mac" followed by what looks like MAC address on my MacBook Pro in System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced Button > WINS tab at the Computer name.
It seemed to happen following an update where it seemed to have forgotten what I had named it and used the Airport Media Access Card (MAC) address instead.

  • Shared computer showing up in Finder not part of my network

    Hello,
I am very confused on what is going on here. Basically, I am at a friends house and have my MacBook connected directly with an Ethernet chord. There are no other connections going out of the DSL box/Router because there is only one output for internet. It's the generic one that comes with internet installation.
That being said, in the sidebar of my Finder window there is a computer listed under shared called "office" and I am capable of viewing all of the files on this computer.
The only other computer in the house is a Windows 98 Desktop computer, and does not have the same files on it, nor is it even connected to the internet.
Like I said, this is a direct connection, no wireless router.
If it matters, I was previously in town using unsecured wifi from local businesses and then came home, plugged in the ethernet, and the shared computer popped up.
When I disconnect the ethernet, the shared computer goes away.
I am completely boggled on how this can be occuring.

Do you have your MacBook's AirPort turned on? You are likely picking up an unsecured WiFi router and attached computer network.

  • How to indentify an unknown shared computer showing in finder?

For quite some time I've been seeing a computer show up under shared in finder.  It appears as macbook-2cd86c.  When I click on it is states that I'm connected as a "guest".  I can identify my husband's MacBook.  If it helps to know, we both connect to the internet wirelessly and use AT&T UVerse.  I thought that maybe it be the name of the router, but we've changed it a few times and the name of the unknown macbook has remained the same.  We also both have iphones that sync to our respective computers.  Our network is WPA protected.  How can I indentify this unknown computer?

how do I find out the the number of the MAC address on my husband's Mac?
Applications -> Utilities -> System Profiler
On the left side select "Network"
On the top Right side select "Airport"
In the bottom Right look for "MAC Address"
Unless your Husband is using "Built-in Ethernet", then select that entry in the Top Right panel.

If your Mac is new-ish and has one of the Lions as its OS, the drives, cards, USB sticks no longer show up, even though they're there. Go to Finder's Preferences and tick the corresponding items in the General and Sidebar tabs.

  • Windows Vista Computer not showing up in finder

Hi, my WIndows Vista computer is not showing up in finder under Shared. I can connect to my PC from my mac by clicking on finder, go, connect to server and typing in the PC's IP Address, Username and Password. I can also see my Mac computer from my PC running Windows Vista.
What's weird is that it was showing up for awhile but I recently changed my network key and unchecked file sharing on both my Mac and PC.
Afterwards I re-enabled file sharing on both my mac and Vista computer but my PC won't show up in finder.
I can connect to my PC and see the computer in finder but when I click eject, it disappears. I would like it to remain in finder. Is there some setting that I need to enable? Please help

Assuming that the missing machine is part of the same Workgroup/Domain:
Open Terminal and enter "nmblookup -M workgroupname" (without the quotes, and replacing workgroupname with the name of your workgroup or domain.
This will list the IP address of the machine that is the "master browser" of your network. If you are on a domain, the address should be that of your domain controller. There should only be one ip address listed.
You can then get that machine to list the shares that it see on the network by entering:
    "smbclient -L ipaddressofmasterbrowser"
You should be able to just press enter when it asks for a password.
This will list available shares and servers.

  • Unkown computer showing up on my finder sidebar under "shared"

    Hi there,
I have an unkown computer showing up on my finder sidebar under "shared". The name of this shared computer is "technicolor". How can I disconnect and delete it? I suspect it is spyware or something similar as when I unplug the ethernet cable that connects to my modem, I can't connect to this computer. When I do connect it is empty.
    OS 10.5.8
Note: I have had Parallels 4 (virtual PC XP) on my mac for a number of years and when that is running it comes up in the sidebar under "shared" but with the name I gave it when set up. So when running both names show.
I would appreciate some direction on how to get rid of this "shared" computer.
    Thanks
    Andrew

Somewhere on the network you are using is a computer with that name. If the network is wifi and it's yours, you should change the password on it immediately. If the network is wifi and it belongs to someone else, then talk to that person or stop using that other person's wifi network.
If you just want to get it out of your sidebar, you can choose to have the Finder window sidebar not show available shares. Go to Finder Preferences->General and un-check CONNECTED SERVERS.

  • Unknown iPhone keeps showing up on Find My iPhone

An unknown iPhone keeps showing up on Find My iPhone on my iphone 5. I removed it, but it came back in a few days. I then erased it and then removed it and it came back again. I then erased it, removed it and changed my Apple password, A week later it showed up again.
I did sell an iPhone 2 years ago but i erased it and removed the SIM card before shipping. I dont know if the one that is showing up is my old phone or some other iphone.
Can someone please provide some information as to what is going on?

If it comes back, then go to iCloud.com, log in with your Apple ID & password, and place the offending iPhone in Lost Mode and set a passcode up for it.
Then, change your Apple ID password to something very complex (using a mixture of capital letters, lowercase letters, numbers and maybe even some special characters), making it at least 12 characters long.

  • Unknown shared computer shows up

    Hi everyone,
I have used Mac OS X since version 10.1, so I know it quite well. However, since I have upgraded to 10.5, a computer shows up under "shared" in the Finder. It was never my intention to connect to any computer, but one named uw-uy155rr0hdft (a pc server) keeps showing up. Sometimes it disappears (after a reboot), but whenever I download something through Safari, it appears again.
I am worried that someone might have broken into my system (is this even possible on a Mac?), since I never wanted to connect to this PC in the first place. On the plus side, whenever I click on this shared computer, the connection fails. How can I remove this shared computer from my system? Thank you very much in advance.

This recently happened to me as well. "Computer2007" is what showed up along with another name. I'm behind 2 routers on a wired connection so I'm not sure what it could have been. I disconnected my modem, restarted my comp, changed my firewall options and enabled stealth mode. Nothing shows up now.

  • "Extra" version of computer showing in Finder?

I see in the Finder that an extra version of my wife's computer keeps showing in the Finder.  (See screen shot)  As you can see, there is her MacBook Pro along with two others with numbers in parentheses.  The problem is that I can't access her computer for file backups, etc.
When I go to her System Preferences and go to Sharing, I delete the number after the parentheses, but it reappears.
Any ideas?  This just started happening with the new OS.
    Thanks.

OK, sorted it in the end. I'd restarted both computers and my AppleTV, but hadn't done a reboot on my Time Capsule. I did that and it fixed the multiple instance issue. I was still left with a number in parenthesis next to each computer name, but I fixed that by following this article: http://www.cnet.com/news/computer-showing-on-network-with-2-next-to-name/ (turn off file sharing in system preferences, rename the computer, turn file sharing back on).

Eric, I'm sorry not to be much help. As I'm not technically minded I was finding it hard to follow Paul's questions and he sorted it himself, but did say that it was to do with configuration.

  • Mystery computer shows up under Shared list in Finder

I’m hoping someone can help me solve a mystery…I have 2 macs (a late 2008 MBP and the most recent white MB), both connected wirelessly to a Time Capsule. From time to time, I see a computer show up under the list of Shared devices that I cannot identify. It is listed just as a MAC address and looking at Get Info tells me it’s a PC server. I have no other computers or devices connected to my network. and I also have the network protected with a password. I even changed the network password this morning, and the mystery computer still appears and disappears at random. When it does appear, I can connect to it as a Guest, but there are no folders or other content available.
Can anyone suggest what might be going on? I’m concerned that my network is compromised and that someone else has access to my files. Should I be worried and how can I fix this?
    Thank you!

It's more likely that you are seeing someone elses computer that may have sharing enabled. If you are in an apartment building or have neighbors otherwise close-by, you may just be picking up their machine. Because you see theirs does not mean that they can access yours in anyway. HOWEVER... if you see a machine appear under your shares (or otherwise) that you are not familiar with, you should NOT attempt to connect to it. Doing so could potentially compromise your system. It's not very likely... even less likely on a Mac... but it is something to avoid.

  • New "Shared" Computer showing up?

    Hi,
All of a sudden, I have a new device showing up in my "shared" list on the left side of my open windows. I'm not sure where it came from or how to get rid of it. I've searched the threads here, but couldn't find the answer, so would appreciate any help.
I have a G4 Tower connected directly via ethernet to an Airport Extreme, using a DSL modem. I also have a MacBook that connects via Airport, and it also shows this unknown device. When I "Get info" on the device, it says it's a "PC Server" but no more info, and clicking on it shows two folders, "D" and "SharedDocs," and that I'm connected as: Guest.
I've never put any password on my network (we live in a pretty rural area, so never felt the need). But I'm wondering if it's a neighbor's computer showing up?
How do I get rid of this icon?
    Thanks,
    Mark

All I can think of, in my case, is that there was a neighbor that somehow got on my "Shared" list.
There is no "somehow." You neighbor was "stealing" your WiFi. Let's hope he was not smart enough to access your computer.
If you run the terminal command
    last
you will see all the logins.
I changed my Airport Network to WPA security (from no security at all), and the "rogue" device is no longer there.
You should be using WPA2 - even WPA has been compromised and WEP is a joke these days.
Eventually everyone will learn to use WPA2.

  • A Friend Was Working On My Mac Pro And Now Every File On The Computer Shows

A friend was using the Mac Pro to look at a disc, and he said he went into Terminal. Now, every file on the computer shows. He hasn't gotten back to me, and it's a little annoying, seeing ALL the faded envelopes with minus signs, and extra files. I hope this makes sense. I know he went into Terminal, and it had something to do with Finder and show all, or something. Any help is appreciated.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"
Click on the Finder in the Dock with the Control and Option keys held down and choose Relaunch. Some third-party utility software will also do this.
