Unknown Device!!!!  HELP!!!!

I already have the software installed, and I know that my usb ports work because i've used them in the past with other hardware. I just bought my ipod today, and when I plug it in a little symble thats the same as the one beside of the usb port pops up, when clicke on, it says unknown device. I can't even access it so much as to format it. Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have wasted this money. And I'm on a PC btw.

I've got the same problem... I'll list all the details..
I have an iPod Photo 30 gig.. worked fine on my old computer, plugged it in and it was great, not a problem in the world.
I then put together a new PC, 3.0Ghz P4... and installed windows and put it all together again. I restored my database from my old iTunes library. When I connected the iPod it worked... and began tranferring and updating.. but then it crashed.. and it mentioned something to do with an I/O error and that the iPod had to be disconnected, and it also mentioned something to do with a timeout error.
Suddenly, half the music on my iPod wouldn't play, it skipped skipped skipped... really annoying. I tried to format the iPod using the iPod software... buuut it told me that it wasn’t an iPod that was connected. (Funny that... lol)
After working away at the problem I decided to format and try the iPod again... still no luck, and its really getting to me.
What happens now... is, you connect it, it says “Found new hardware”... “Apple iPod...” ... “Disk Drive...” ... then iTunes loads... then iTunes freezes... then the iPod disconnects 2 mins later, then iTunes unfreezes. Now it says the iPod is an unknown device, and that it has “Malfunctioned”.
This is really annoying me. I’ve tried to download updates from Microsoft, but I can’t. Theres an error in the validate thingo, I’ll have to call them sometime, but that’s irrelevant. Does anyone know a fix? Or... someone mentioned the firewire works... I have a firewire card... where can I buy the Firefire cable from? And... how can I contact apple for help, if I need to?
Annoying though, because the USB method worked like a charm before this. BTW this iPod still connects perfectly on other pcs... but it doesn’t have the music library I want lol...
Sorry for the long post, but I figure the more detail the better. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a heap!

  • Help - How to stop Bluetooth on BB10 from repeatedly trying to connect to unknown device

    Hi,
So about a week ago I was trying to connect my Q10 to a Bluetooth speaker. In the process of this (and rather stupidly) I tried to connect to some unknow device that is not mine (nor was it the bluetooth speaker). I quickly deleted this connection. However my Q10 now constantly asks me to enter a "numeric passkey" to connect to this unknown device. I've tried changing the Q10 Bluetooth name, my "discoverable" option is set to off and I've deleted ALL saved Bluetooth connections, but my Q10 keeps beeping at me asking for a passkey. Short of a factory reset how do I stop this happening? It appears (to me at least) that something in the Q10 still thinks this is a valid device and wants to complete the connection.
I have unchecked "Connect to the last device when turned on" and also turned off rSAP Mode (whatever that is).
I work in a congested area with mutiple companies very close so have no option to go find the device (it only bugs me as I drive into the carpark and I am at my desk).
    Software version is 10.2.1.2122.
thanks in advance for any help to stop this as Bluetooth is basically useless right now for me at work.

So a follow up to this (and using the question you asked). Taking the question about can I connect I did connect to the device again and then turned "Handsfree Calling" off in the Device Details. This seems to leave the device present, but unconnected. It is no longer bugging me, which is something. I'd rather not have it present at all of course, but that seems to be hard!
I'd appreciate your thoughts on this as a long term solution?
    Many Thanks,

  • My iphone 4s keeps coming up as unknown device since i upgraded to ios 7. it will not activate

ive got an iphone 4s which worked fine before i upgraded to ios 7. now it is stuck at the activation screen because it keeps telling me my device is unknown. i have tried activating it over wifi and through itunes but no luck, itunes tells me that there is a problem with the device and to contact a service centre. it has an active sim card in and all worked fine before, now i have a very expensive paperweight and im getting very annoyed. apple want £25 just to talk to me which i am not paying as i think its ridulous that i have to pay for thier **** up. does anyone have any adive or had this problem before?

Ok I just got pass the error CONNECT TO iTUNES and UNKNOWN DEVICE. I can not gurentee this will work for anyone else. This is what I did and it worked out:
    CONNECT TO iTUNES error
    1. I removed the sim card and put the device on charge for several hours, the display switch between the Apple logo and the connet to iTunes logo.
    2. I launched iTunes and connect the device to the computer while the display was on the Apple Logo (not connet to iTunes logo).
    3. I put the device in DFU while still on the Apple logo.
    4. I forced a deliberate error while attempting to restore by selecting a older iOS firmware (iOS 6) and click restore (I got the error, maybe this step does nothing but things changed from here).
5.At this point the device remained in DFU mode and restored to the current iOS 7.0.4 firware.
    UNKNOWN DEVICE error
    6. After restore the device went into searching, at this point I put the the sim card into the phone
    7. Select Language and Country, the device error Unknow Device (this might be as far as you can go).
    8. I took the sim card out and let the phone rest.  After an hour or so the device completed the search and read No Sim.
    9. I put the sim card back into the phone  and the phone activated.
I tried evething online and nothing worked. This is what worked for me. Hope this helps, good Luck!

  • Creative Zen 8Gb-Unknown Device!

Creative Zen 8Gb-Unknown Device!? Player: Creative Zen 8gb
    Firmware Version: .20.02e
OS: Win XP with Service Pack 3 (Unknown Origin)
    Windows Media Player: Version .0.572.545
    Motherboard: ASUS P5Q PRO
My problem is that when I connect the player to my computer it is recognized as a Unknown Device and listed as Unknown Device in the Uni'versal Serial Bus Controller of Device Manager.
There is no yellow triangle, there is no section for Portable Devices. It simply registers as Unknown Device.
There is no apparent way to synch with the device. It does not show up in Creative Media Explorer, Windows Explorer or Windows Media Player.
The Original Creative CD installation package does not detect it.
The newest Creative XP installation package from official website does not detect it.
The newest Creative firmware installation package from official website does not detect it.
I have tried several USB slots from front and back (am using back mostly) and short black USB cable (0s long) as well as another USB cable. All USB ports are 2.0.
The player charges normally when connected to the computer and works perfectly for listening to music etc.
Help please! Im poor as hell and will go insane without this player :/

When I connect the Zen, that is where the change happens in the Device Manager trees. It is not recognised as Creative Zen, Portable Device or even a device with a yellow exclamation triangle.
In other words, when I plug in the player, that is how it is represented in the Device Manager trees. As an Unknown Device in the USB controller section.
For your information I have tried this player on 3 other systems.
    Laptop A with Win XP/Service Pack 3/WMP
    Laptop B with Win XP/Service Pack 3/WMP 0
    Laptop C with Windows 7
    RESULT IS ALWAYS SAME.
    UNKNOWN DEVICE!
The player works fine in and of itself and charges normally when plugged.
Please confirm what are the system requirements for Firmware Version: .20.02e which is the currently installed version on my Creative Zen 8GB

  • Mobile Device Helper has stopped working

I have just purchased an iPhone 3Gs, I have the lastest version of iTunes (9.1) and am operating on 32-bit Windows Vista using an Acer laptop.
First, the iPhone was not recognised - so re-installed iTunes, downloaded Service Pack 2 for vista, reinstalled iTunes. Did't work. Finally found a forum that lead me to delete a problem file for Acer laptops (can't remember its name now) but then my iPhone was now recognised!
Secondly, tried to sync my windows contacts (all my old contacta list from old phone) then had syncing problems..through more forums that error message stopped but now I have a new one that I can't get past...
'Mobile Device Helped has stopped working' comes up repeatedly and will not let me to anything with iTunes as it freezes until I end task in Task manager.
I have looked into other forums that talk of deleting the Apple Mobile Device, but it doesn't seem to me to be the rigt decision as the majority of people have just had to reinstall iTunes as it wont recognise the phone without the file.
It seems that the new iTunes doesn't like Windows Vista.
Please can anyone help me get past this point before I lose the will to live!! (it's been over 5hours now!!!!)
    Thanks

    Sort of the same issue.
    Windows Vista 64bit Home Premium.
I just launched iTunes for the first time after installing 9.1. When I connected my iPhone, iTunes told me that I needed to install a newer version of Apple Mobile Device, which entailed removing/reinstalling iTunes and AMD. I remember there being an order to which applications should be removed, so I did that, but got stuck at AMD. I wasn't able to remove it. There was no error message, it just automatically rolled back the uninstall process and quit. I did some research and saw someone recommend using the Windows Install Cleanup Utility. I used that to remove AMD, and it worked. Next on the list was Apple Application Support (?), which also could not be uninstalled by normal means. So I used WIC on that as well. iTunes, Bonjour, Quicktime, and Apple Software update I was able to remove via the Control Panel. I rebooted, reinstalled iTunes, and when it began the install process for AMD I got this message:
    "Could not open key:
Unknown\Components\DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\3F55235DF871F046A8F862841205 6EF. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."
Got the same message for Apple Application Support. As a result, neither was installed.
Prior to doing any of this, I had disabled AMD in Services, which didn't help. I have since re-enabled it, and it is still running in Services, although it does not show up in the list on programs to uninstall.
After all this, I read in another forum that simply doing a Repair on AMD would solve the problem, but since I am unable to reinstall it, I cannot test it out.

  • I have the iPhone 3GS and I was updating to the IOS 5 version when at the end of the update it said updated failed. Now my phone is not recognized by my computer or any computer. The computer says it is a unknown device and my phone will not do anything.

Need help finding out what happened to my phone and what I can do. After trying to update my iPhone 3GS to IOS 5 my phone will no longer work and is an unknown device to any computer. It is like it wiped out everything on the iPhone and has no hardware or data on it. At the end of the download and update of IOS 5 it said there was an error during the process and gave me no option but to push ok and know phone is not working. The screen shows the USB plug and iTunes symbol, but computers will not recognize device.

What was the error number?  That would be very useful since the following gives actions for various errors.

Try manually placing the iPod in recovery mode to see if that will make the iPod visible in iTunes.  See:

  • Equium L10: Windows Vista Beta2 - unknown device

    Hi
I have a Toshiba Equium L10 with Windows XP loaded as default but I installed VISTA Beta2 "public release" on it and given that it's only a 1.5GHz Celeron CPU with 512MB RAM, it ran extremely well but, I have one problem which I am hoping that I can get help with from the users in this forum and especially those who have the same/similar Equium model as I have?
Ok, after installing VISTA I checked in Device Manager and noticed "Unknown Device". After checking out the info given in it's properties, I have detailed it below:
Location: Microsoft ACPI Compliant Embedded Controller
    Value: ACPI\ACPI 0001 * ACPI0002
When I re-installed XP again, I went to Device Manager/Batteries/Microsoft SMART Battery, the entry for Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem has "ACPI\ACPI0002\6&28CA2229&0".
Notice the "ACPI0002" info given for the 'unknown device' in VISTA is the same info given for the "Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem" in Windows XP. So I am left wondering if the unkown device under VISTA is the Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem and if so, why did VISTA not install the driver for it?
Can anyone help with find a driver for the "unknown device" in VISTA?
    Regards
    Brave

    Hi
The unknown device appears because the driver is missing.
Unfortunately, at this time you will not find any Toshiba supported drivers for the Windows Beta2. This is a beta version and not official on the market.
I think if this OS will be official supported so you will also find the needed drivers.

  • Windows needs to install driver software for your unknown device

Windows needs to install driver software for your unknown device
This is the message that i get when ever i plug in my ipod touch to my computer. the computer is running on vista. i dont know what to do, because i tried to follow the steps suggested, but it didnt work, the computer said that it couldnt find anything and to check with apple for some driver software. HELP!!!

The iPod touch and iPhone do not use the same type of USB drivers that other Apple devices use. They both require Apple Mobile Device Services to be running. Using this tech article as a guide, you can easily fix this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567

  • Unknown Device ipod Classic and Windows Vista problem??

Help!! My ipod Classic is not being recognized by my computer. I have read the previous articles and tried the solutions but I continue to get the result "Windows has determined that the driver software is up to date" I continue to get the error noise when I plug the USB in and the Device manager continues to say "Unknown Device" It seems others are having this problem, how do I fix this?

I am having the same trouble with mine, and I can say that it isn't iTunes, I plugged my brothers iPod Nano in and it worked like a charm, but when I plugged my iPod Classic 160g in all it says is it is an "unknown divice". It isn't Vista either as the same thing happens on XP Pro as well, so all I can think of is it is a error on the Classic itself. I just wish someone can help out so that I can use my ipod!!!! Come on Apple!!!! Solve this problem!!!!

  • Fix for "Unknown Device" when the iPod is connected

After a few long nights, a few headaches, hours and hours of reading, thinking and many toasted sandwiches, I finally found the problem to my iPod not loading. Putting together information I had read here and at many other sites I had a brainwave... and sure enough it worked. I figure this may be helpful to many other iPod users, so... here I am posting my solution. Note though, this wont help all users, but I know I wasn’t alone with this issue, and this just might help someone.
I’ll list the issue I was having (this may help other people identify their issue to mine) was that the iPod failed to work on windows, and threw a fit when plugged in. Windows did too, iTunes would lock up and the iPod software failed to recognise that an iPod was connected. The iPod had worked on an older PCs before, but it failed to work on my new homebuilt PC. When I first connected the iPod it began to work, transferring and updating.. but then it unexpectedly disconnected the iPod.. and mentioned something to do with an I/O error, the iPod had to be disconnected and it also mentioned something to do with a timeout error and dataloss (or as it put it “Data has been destroyed”. That’s always a pleasant message to read). Suddenly, half the music on my iPod wouldn't play, it skipped songs until it found a song it would play... really annoying. I tried to format the iPod using the iPod software... buuut it told me that it wasn’t an iPod that was connected (Funny that... lol). After the first iPod crash, it would react differently when connected. It would once again pop up with the “Found new hardware” bubble, “Apple iPod...”, “Disk Drive...” ... then iTunes loads... then iTunes freezes... then the iPod disconnects 2 mins later, then iTunes unfreezes. THEN the next time the iPod is connected, it would say it was an “Unknown device”, and that it has “Malfunctioned”.
It seems that, oddly enough, my iPod (I own the 30gig iPod Photo) does not like USB 2.0... I’m thinking that it must not support some of the device commands the PC is sending to it... Weird though, because on other USB 2.0 PCs it worked fine. (I got the best results out of Dell PCs...). IF USB 2.0 is disabled and slows to USB 1.1 the iPod works a charm... jumped up without an issue in the world. To disable USB 2.0, jump into BIOS as your pc is in its POST stages... this being, when the PC is first turned on and presents a message such as “Press DEL to enter setup” (or something similar), do so. Then refer to your manual on how to disable USB 2.0, if possible. Apply the changes and reboot. Be sure not to mess around with other settings, it is very easy to mess up your computer if you change settings you are not familiar with.
Other solutions would be to run the iPod via Firewire... if you can get a cable. Run along to your local mac store and see if they have one in stock. I’ll get back on here to post if using Firewire solved the issue later.
Perhaps a motherboard BIOS upgrade, or newer drivers could resolve the issue. This may explain to some people why their iPod stopped working overnight after working fine for so long, maybe an update of the sort was installed. Apparently my motherboard already has an update, so I’ll test that sometime and post my results as I investigate further, but as for now I’m just happy my iPod is working, even if it is taking ages to transfer (25 gigs of music takes awhile over USB 1.1 lol...).
Also, I might add that my motherboard is an ASUS P5P800 with the Intel 865PE chipset. It could be an interesting pattern seeing which motherboards do not seem to be compatible with the iPod at USB 2.0 speeds.
As long as this post was I hope that someone gets some use out of it. I’ll post further findings as I investigate this matter further.
    Happy iPodding!

    hi Jazza!
the best explanation for this that i've seen is that there can be power drain problems in USB 2.0. drop below 500 mA running through the port and everything goes to pot. this may well explain why switching back to USB 1.1 sometimes works like a charm, and also explains why it's important to have the ipod plugged into a high powered USB port rather than a low power port.
i've seen a confirmed case of a USB connection going west after a scanner got plugged into the beast in question ... periodically i see other reports along these lines, too.
