Unknown error (1417)

I want to update my Ipod classic (30GB), but i always receive the message 'the ipod of .... cannot be updated. There is an unknown error (1417). My itunes is 7.5 and my system windows XP. I also want to synchronise my ipod, but then i get the message that there is no more space. But i only used 18GB untill now.
I tried to restore the ipod, etc. but nothing solved the problem. Is there anyone who can help with this problem? Thanks.

    Hi Everyone,
When i try to update to 1.2 of my Video iPod (30GB), i always receive "ipod cannot be updated. Unknown error -1417"
I use Windows 2000 SP4 (with latest patches&updates) + iTunes 7.0. Is this a known bug with iTunes or something wrong with my iPod ?
    Thanks,
    Arun

  • Unknown error 1417 and 1418?

Help! I've installed an iPOD nano, previously used an iPod mini. It recognises the nano but can't download any msuic. Reinstal and Restore failed with unknown error 1417 and 1418. I've uninstalled old iTunes and iPod software and downloaded the latest iTunes and it still doesn't work -also noticed that the old name for the iPOD mini has been tranferred to the iPod nano but can't delete this - any ideas?

Thanks Kyle, you solved it - the Ipod was connected to a powered 4 way USB2 adaptor - when I connected it direct to a USB2 port in my desktop it worked OK. For all other 1417 sufferers: get rid of your USB adaptors, iPods obviously can't cope with sharing a port!
In answer to your question about the iPod mini it had one of those hard disk failures which shows a sad face - very sad when the repair bill is a standard 75GBP - over 100US$. Only 18 months old.

    1. What error code are you seeing?
    2. When are you seeing it (restoring or updating your iPod)?
    3. Which iPod do you have?
    4. What version of Windows do you have?

  • Unable to update to 1.1.1 do I need to? Unknown error (1417)

iPod Classic 80GB. My software version is 1.0.2. Every time I plug my iPod in I am informaed that a newer version of the software (1.1.1) is available, but every time I try to update I am told that the message "could not be completed. An unknown error has occurred (1417). However, I want to know if updating really makes any difference to the way the iPod runs?
I don't want to have to restore unless absolutely neccessary as it takes about a day and a half to resync all my music, which means leaving my computer (which is in my bedroom) on overnight.

You should refer to the link first, since it directly deals with your problem (error 1417). You should try each procedure. You never know what might fix it.
(ex. even though you think your USB drivers are up-to-date, you should double check and update them).
If the procedure outlined in the link doesn't work, you could try my procedure.
    As for your question:
If you have the "Manually Manage Music" ticked in itunes, those are your ipod's settings no matter where you plug your ipod in. If you wish to update using another computer, you could install itunes in another computer, since your ipod is set on Manually Manage Music, it won't sync the new library. A window will likely open asking that your ipod is synced to another library, would you like to sync to this library? Click CANCEL. Then update your ipod.
Good Luck! And let us know how it went.

  • Fix for Error 1417 with new itunes 7

This worked for me when I got that unknown error - 1417 (can't update ipod)
Step 1: Disable all third party programs and services via MSCONFIG
Article with step by step instructions found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
    Step 2: Restart the computer
Step 3: Uninstall quicktime through the control panel in add/remove programs
Step 4: Uninstall itunes through the control panel in add/remove programs
Step 5: Uninstall any/all ipod updaters or ipod for window software through the control panel in add/remove programs
Step 6: Delete program file folders for itunes and quicktime:
--On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
--In My Computer, open Local Disk. (C Drive)
    --Open Program Files.
--Right-click on the iTunes folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
--Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    --Open the iPod folder.
--Right-click on the bin folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu. Note: If you are unable to delete the \Program Files\iPod\bin folder, see the "iPodService.exe Alert" section below.
    --Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
--Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    Step 7: Restart computer
Step 8: Install STANDALONE version of quicktime at:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Note: if you get an error on this page about an error occuring, just refresh. It should load. Also, there are TWO download options... one with itunes 7 and one without. You want the one without itunes.
    Step 9: Restart computer
    Step 10: Install itunes 7:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download
    Step 11: Restart computer
Step 12: Run itunes. You should be able to update and sync your ipod after this and no longer get that pesky 1417 error.
Also, after you have resolved the issue please see the bottom of the msconfig article for instructions on configuring windows to load your normal startup options again.

It seems like almost everybody is having this exact same problem. I bought a Nano for my wife and a iPod Photo for myself. Syncing does not work on either one and from what I read on these boards it doesn't work for most customers. Apple really needs to fix this soon.

  • The iPod " " could not be updated. An unknown error has occurred (1417).

This is what saved my day... I copied this from a longer reply.
"Try this: I got error 1417. The iPod "Dan's iPod" could not be updated. An unknown error has occurred (1417).
1)Plug in your iPod and wait for iTunes to tell you an update for it is available
2)Click the Install button on that dialog and keep an eye on your iPod
3)When your iPod screen switches from the flashing "Do Not Disconnect" message to the Main Menu screen, unplug the iPod, wait a couple SECONDS, plug the iPod back in
4)You should notice some slow-down in the progress meter and a new dialog box should come up and tell you your iPod is being updated and to not disconnect it until the update finishes
5)That's it. Wait for the update to finish and iTunes will re-recognize it and show its new up-to-date status."
The only thing I would add, restart your computer with the IPOD left connected. When it starts back up you are set.

  • An unknown error occurred (1417)

    Hi everyone!
Can anyone please shed some light on this error for me?!
"The iPod could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1417)"
We started getting this error ever since we updated from iTunes 6 to 7 on a G5 running OS 10.4.7.
    Thanks!

Here are the steps you have to follow:
1)Plug in your iPod and wait for iTunes to tell you an update for it is available.
2)Click the Install button on that dialog and keep an eye on your iPod.
3)When your iPod screen switches from the flashing "Do Not Disconnect" message to the Main Menu screen, unplug the iPod, wait a couple SECONDS, plug the iPod back in.
4)You should notice some slow-down in the progress meter and a new dialog box should come up and tell you your iPod is being updated and to not disconnect it until the update finishes.
5)That's it. Wait for the update to finish and iTunes will re-recognize it and show its new up-to-date status.

  • "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred (1418)" Help!

Hope someone can please help me.
iTunes is asking me to restore my iPod, but an error occurs each time. This is the chain of events.
    1) I connected my iPod to iTunes and it asked if I wanted to update iPod software. I clicked yes.
    2) The iPod then changed from a colour screen to a monochrome screen.
    3) I then had problems with my USB Connection/Driver which I have now resolved.
    4) My iPod asked me to connect to iTunes and restore.
    5) I connect to iTunes and the following message appears
"iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes" So I clicked the restore button.
    6) The restore progresses until the following message appears
"The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error has occurred. (1418).
Basically I have read everything I could get my hands on to try and solve but nothing seems to work.
Really looking forward to some solution.
    Cheers.
