Have you checked for firmware updates for your DVD/CD drive at Dell?
Head to the following page at Dell and enter you name and model number. when it takes you to your model, be sure to pick the correct operating system:

I can burn with Windows media player, Nero etc. But when I try to burn a cd with Itunes I get and error "Unknown Error 2131" Has anyone else had this problem and if so is it dells problem or itunes problem.
    Thanks

I’m at Dell Headquarters in Austin, Texas and I’m part of Dell’s Online Community Outreach team. I’m sorry to hear that this is a problem and would like to see what I can do to help. I’d be happy to assist in tracking down firmware if anyone is having difficulty finding it. If applying the latest firmware available for that drive doesn’t correct the issue then the next step would be to pursue a patch for the software. It’s been my experience that optical drives are designed to meet certain specifications and then programs such as iTunes written to work with them. Given that the drive meets all applicable industry standards, it would be more of an issue of iTunes being patched to work with it then the other way around. Until such a fix is available, one possible workaround might be to use a different program to burn music CD’s if that can be done in a way that’s in keeping with the DRM rules.

    hi Ilkka!
no particularly focussed advice I'm afraid. but there's still a few other things apart from the CD-drive firmware mentioned here that are worth checking up on:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93360
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93286
... and these resources might be helpful:

toonz, "Where to find firmware for your CD/DVD drive", 05:55pm Apr 15, 2005 CDT
... and if no joy with those, head here to check for other documentation and to submit your CD diagnostics to Apple:

... and periodically refresh your thread here with another post, so passers-by will be able to update you on any developments.

Can't burn cd's keep getting "unknown error" 2131 how can it be fixed?

The 2131 is usually a firmware issue, but we'd better doublecheck.
Could you post your diagnostics for us please?
In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:
    ... and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen:

Does your computer happen to be a Dell or Toshiba? If so, this error on either of these machines has been reported several times. I believe Dell has released a software patch to work out the issue, not so sure if Toshiba has done same.

  • Unknown Error 2131 - Can't Burn CDs

A few months ago I had to replace my XP computer with a Vista computer. Ever since then any attempt to burn a CD has errored out. I've tried all the different tips and tricks but still nothing.
    Any help please?

I think I fixed it...I went under My Computer, then right clicked on the cd drive that I used to burn, go to properties, went under the auto play tab, selected the action to perform button for each individual category(dvd, blank cd, music cd) selected the no action icon for each category. Then went to the recording tab and unselected the enable recording selection. Now I can burn every time! If this fixes it for anyone else let me know!

  • The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (2131).

I'm wondering if there is a fix for this error.
This is the third error I've received after trying to burn an mp3 cd. The first error I received was 261, which was the special character (ex. &) in the playlist name. So I edited the playlist name.
Then I received error 4280; which is the one about the Sony cd drive. I tried the fix I found on here for that error and now I'm having the 2131 error.
I can't find any info here or elsewhere on the net for this one. I already filled out the feedback form and included my optional contact info but I have yet to hear anything back.
    Any help is appreciated.

Has anyone else had the 2131 error? I've noticed there are alot of issues here about failed burning/unknown errors.

  • Advent 5301 Unknown Error Code 2131

When trying to burn CD's, I get 'unknown error code 2131' and then the CD is ejected without burning.
I see some fellow users have had the same problem, but I cannot find the solution.

    Thank you.

It's usually a firmware issue on a drive, but it'd be best to check first.

With a 2131, a good policy is to check for any firmware updates for your DVD/CD drive. The following document might be of some help with that:

  • HT201263 my iphone 4 went into recovery mode & will not restore. Unknown error 21 comes up on iTunes. Please can someone offer any ideas for a solution?

I have an iphone 4 nearly 2 yrs old. It has worked perfectly for that time. On Friday last (whilst away on holiday) I took the phone out of my pocket & it was lifeless. I tried switching it on, no joy, I tried the power/home button reset no joy. I plugged it into a mains charger & it came on but had a banner across the screen saying "verification required". I removed the charger & decided I would try again when I got home so I could connect to my PC & iTunes.
At home I went through the whole above process again but when I plugged it into the mains again it just had the Apple logo going on/off repeatedly. I plugged the phone into my PC & the apple logo appeared followed by the "connect to iTunes". In iTunes I get the banner "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes". So I click on "OK" the "Restore" then a banner asking if I'm sure I want to restopre the iPhone appears, press "Restore & Update". iTunes starts to remove the software, veryfies it with Apple & then another flag "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (21) which appears to be a security issue.
I thought the above problem was something to do with O2 because I picked up my new iPhone 4S last Tuesday but was unable to set it up until I got back from my holiday, O2 say it isn't anything they've done.
My question is has it happened to anyone & can anybody offer a solution, is it a hardware or software issue?
