Unknown error (4000)

Hi - I can't burn purchased songs from iTunes to a CD on my Dell Windows XP Pro machine. iTunes gets hung up while initializing the disk, then cancels the burn and gives me an "unknown error (4000)" message. I was able to burn one disk successfully before this happened. Thanks. Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Unknown error "4000" when trying to burn  a cd?!

I've noticed that there are a lot of similar complaints in this forum but I still want to add mine here too...
I just recently downloaded my first album from iTunes and tried to burn it on a cd, but the program refused to do anything other than popping out the message " The effort to burn the cd failed unknown error 4000".
I updated the firmware nut still nothing. What's up with this?

    hi Ilkka!
no particularly focussed advice I'm afraid. but there's still a few other things apart from the CD-drive firmware mentioned here that are worth checking up on:

... and if no joy with those, head here to check for other documentation and to submit your CD diagnostics to Apple:

  • Unknown Error # 4000 when i try to burn cds

When I insert a blank cd it acts like its copying, and says writing...(the name of the song). Then after about 30 seconds it says canceling disk burn and it comes up that an unknown error # 4000 occured. I've been able to burn cds for along time up until a couple of months ago. Can anyone help me?

I am having the same problem, and it is really freaking me out because over 95% of my music is saved in my iTunes Library, and all my original discs have been resold on Ebay. As you all know...once you save them in iTunes, there is no way to access the music file in the Microsoft Mediaplayer. I have tried purchasing different blank discs only to have to discard them after the attempt. Is there any way to fix this problem. Can I opt to go back to an old version of itunes? It looks like this problem has been going on for quite a few months now. How do we get Apple to address this problem. I need to have access to MY music that I purchased. This is insane!!!

i might be able to help, but i'm pretty sure a ton of people have had the same problem and no definite answers yet. try burning at a lower speed, go to
edit < preferences < advanced tab < Burning tab, then select a lower speed, like 8x, instead of max possible. also while on that screen, make sure audio cd is selected.
you could always see if it was the brand of cd you are using. or try repairing itunes.
if none of that works, i'd just try using a different program on your computer, pretty sure most computers now come with their own cd burning program.
hope that can help a little.

  • The attempt to burn a disk failed. An unknown error occurred (4000).

Whenever I try to burn a CD from iTunes, the burning process starts and continues for about two minutes, cancels automatically and then displays the following statement: "The attempt to burn a disk failed. An unknown error occurred (4000)."
Several Apple technicians have tried but been unable to assist me. They have pointed me to articles at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93360 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93286 but none of the suggested solutions solve the problem.
    1. I have the most recent version of iTunes (6.0.1).
    2. All of the songs that I am trying to burn are authorized. For example, they include the Complete U2 Collection, which I recently downloaded from the iTunes Music Store.
    3. I am not trying to burn a CD with the same Playlist more than seven times.
    4. My CD burner works perfectly fine using other CD burning software, such as Windows Media Player or Roxio Easy Media Creator. However, these programs are not compatible with any of the many pieces of music that I have purchased and downloaded from the iTunes Music Store.
My hardware configuration is as follows:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
    HP Pavilion 061 PJ467AA-ABA M1180N
    iTunes 6.0.1.3

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can restore my ability to burn CDs from iTunes? Thank you very much!

I am having the same problem. I get an error 4450 - unknown. I have purchased several songs but it appears I will not be able to burn them to CD.

  • Itunes unknown error code 4000

Please help! I burned a CD just fine last week, and now when I try to burn, I am getting an unknown error code 4000. I googled the problem, and I have tried just about everything. The "include CD box is NOT checked," and I went into add/remove programs and performed the repair option. I also checked to make sure my drive is operating. Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions? thanks!!

  • The attempt to burn a disc failed.  An unknown error occurred (4000)

I know numerous others have had this same problem but I haven't found a solution yet in reading about others with the same error message.  I have updated to the latest version of iTunes, I have updated the firmware and I have run numerous diagnostics and they have all passed.  I am very frustrated and I am ready to dump iTunes and go to another product.
    Here is what happens:
I choose the playlist I want to burn.
From the file menu I choose 'burn playlist to disc'.
I insert a blank cd into the drive and the information pops up identifying my optical drive, speed, etc.
I choose data cd/dvd ( I have also tried this choosing audio cd and I get the same results...error 4000).
I hit burn and the process begins.  The status bar at the top of iTunes says 'writing to disc' for each song.  Finally it finishes writing and changes to burning disc...finishing.  This goes on for some time and then all of a sudden, the status changes to 'cancelling burning. This may take a few minutes'.  Ater a minute or so, the disc ejects.  I have wasted yet another disc and I am getting angrier and angrier!  I have added the most recent diagnostic to this post below.

  • Error 4000 - Unknown Error

When I try to burn a playlist to a DVD through my external (Samsung) DVD burner, after a seemingly random period of time, iTunes pops up over Internet Explorer or whatever I'm on and says Error 4000 has occured. The disc pops out and dones't work.
Does anyone have a cure? I just reinstalled a few days ago to fix a differnet problem. I've already wasted 3 DVDs from this...

Sorry I took so long, I was away from the PC.

  • CD burn error 4000

I've have burned over 100 CDs with my Dell desktop over the last 3 years, but the other day i got a message 'CD disc unable to burn (error 400)'. I don't know what caused it to suddenly stop working.
Basically, I selected the play list and told it to burn a CD. I right clicked on Virtual CD icon in the task bar and on my virtual CDR I told it to create a 700MB disc and insert it. iTunes sees it and then it says "checking playlist" and then it as soon as that is done, it briefly says it's starting to burn the cd when it immediately switches to canceling cd burn and then shows a dialog with the following: The attempt to burn the disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4000).
I am ambivalent about methods of fixing this problem because i am fearful that i will lose my library which has over 3000 songs in it. Is there any safe solution to this problem? I am thankful for any help!

Have you fixed this problem yet? My machine is doing the same thing.

  • Ipod album cover problem "An unknown error occurred (-50)

I recently spent a few hours going through amazon and google image search finding album covers to each of my mp3s no purchased through the Itunes store. After I finally got all of them, I went into Itunes options and clicked "display album art" I recieved the error
"The Ipod William Tell cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50)"
I have unchecked display album art, let it delete whatever was on there, and rechecked it and have recieved the same error.
I've searched around this and other forums and noone has seemed to have this problem with album covers. Any help would be more than greatfully appreciated.

    Hi,
I had the same problem and after a search in google i found this:
    Solution1
If you are getting the same error I was getting, then the solutions is a quite tedious one. You need to go through your entire library starting at the top.
First make sure the ablum art box in the bottom left of iTunes is set to "selected song" and not "now playing". Now highlight the first song at the top and use the down arrow and look at the album art for each song. I have 4000 songs in my library and I found maybe 3 or 4 album art glitches.
The glitches are those songs that show a blank white box for the album art. Don't mistake this for those songs that just have no art attached. These say "Drag album art here." When you find those few white boxes, simply right click the song and go to "get info" and then the artwork tab. Click the white blank and delete it. That's it.
After you do this you should be able to add artwork to your iPod without the error message. I hope this helps you out. -CK
    Solution2
I have managed to fix this error. I have Windows 2000, but I think it should be OK for any Windows version.
    1. Make sure iTunes is closed.
    2. Move My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes* (2 files, *.itl, and *.xml) to Desktop
    3. Start up iTunes, it will create the two files above.
    4. In iTunes: File :: Import...
    5. Select .xml instead of text.
    6. Select the iTunes Music Library.xml
    ITunes stopped complaining.
    Solution3
I had this error as well. Here's how I fixed it.
Apple itunes uses internet explorer (windows version) and therefore uses IE's proxy settings.
If you're behind a proxy you can change your settings to directly connect and then that may fix the problem. (I was using proximitron to filter ads, which went to my local fastnet web accellerator (dial up decompressor) which linked to a remote dialup comrpessor which actually got the internet sites).
Turning that off in IE's settigns (Tools, Options, Connections, Settings, uncheck use proxy) worked for me.
    Solution2 worked fine for me

  • Unknown error (2001)

I'm sorry if this question has been posted and answered before. I've been having problems with iTunes. At least i think it is ITunes because all of the iPods in my household seem not to be able to connect with iTunes. Anyways my problem: i downloaded the new update for my touch that lets me run apps. While installing the update iTunes suddenly stopped citing an unknown error. When i went to Restore and Update to get my touch running again, it gives me the unknown error (2001). So now currently i can not do anything with my touch because it will not restore. I have reinstalled itunes too many times, and still it does not help. And now currently my computer will not even recognize the device. Any help would be appreciated in getting my touch working again with the update.

    Check USB connections
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
    Common errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response”, and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you see your error after changing your USB connections, continue to the next section to troubleshoot your hardware.

okay. i was looking for a drivers download page for your particular model at ShuttleX (to see, for example, if there was new firmware available for your drives).
but the area in the iTunes diagnostics that usually shows up model information:
    VIA Technologies, Inc. FX43
... wasn't saying which model of ShuttleX you had. (that looks more like info about your make of motherboard.)
i got this far at the ShuttleX support site looking for info on what you had:
    http://us.shuttle.com/support.html
... so i figured, i'd better try to work out whether you had what they were calling a complete system or an XPC barebone.
