Unknown error 4280

Hello
OK, I am very new to all of this so please excuse me for my ignorance. Since downloading the recent version of itunes I have been unable to burn purchased music to disc. I keep getting the following message 'The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred 4280'. I have been reading up on this and it seems I'm not the only one out there who is experiencing this problem.
I'm not 'IT minded' so could do with all the help I can get! I have tried reinstalling itunes, and quick time to no avail....
Here are the results of the CD/DVD diagnostic thingy:

PLEASE can someone help me out there - I've recently purchased a lot of suitably tacky Christmas songs to drive the family mad and I can't burn them off!!
Any help appreciated!!

could you confirm the name of your Dell model for me, loo loo?
your system information is saying that you've got a Dimension 7100 ... but your DVD/CD diagnostics are saying:
Dell Computer Corporation Dell DE051
and when i go looking for that system BIOS code at Dell, i see it associated with different models. see:
How do I identify my system BIOS code when using a Driver ResourceCD on my Dell™ Dimension™ or Inspiron™ portable computer?

  • HT3204 When attempting to burn an audio cd, I get an error message that says-burning failed due to unknown error (4280)?  It has been working fine, until today...what does this mean??

When attempting to burn an audio cd from my playlist, I get an error message that says, burn failed due to unknown error (4280).  It has been working fine for months...any solutions?

I have the exact same problem.
Been searching through this site to try and find an answer but still not come up with anything.
The wierd thing is that a couple of days ago it was working fine, and suddenly overnight it's stopped working.
The only solution i've found is that you need to have administrator rights as it says in the posts on the site below:
    http://www.emergingearth.com/itunes-7-cant-burn-cds/
Noticed by the diagnostic in your post that you dont have admin rights like me so that mite be the problem. Not sure if this is the right solution though.

  • Unable to burn CDs - unknown error 4280

I've updated to the latest verions of iTunes twice now. I can burn other CDs, but haven't been able to burn CDs for use in the car for two months. I'm really really tired of buying music I can't use. The CD will start to burn, then I get an unexplained error 4280. Or, the CD burns, but when I try to play it, I get an ERR in my CD player. Please help.

I also can not burn CDs with iTunes 5.0.1.4. I have a Dell Dimension 4400 with a NEC NR-7900A, Rev. 1.08 drive. Everytime I try to burn a CD it tries then comes back with the unknown error 4280. I tried adding the lasted firmware from Dell for this drive but it did not help.

For some reason, the newest version of iTunes (7.0.2) has completely locked up my burner in any application, though I can still rip CDs. Even reinstalling an old version has not worked. After several failed attempts at solving my burning issues with Apple support (who had no idea what to do) I have found something out. The new "Protected AAC" formatted songs will cause a "failed burn" error message. I own 2 different computers and have tried 2 different types of CD-Rs. I have found that Windows Media Player will burn just fine, and that in iTunes I can burn all my old music (under "kind" look for "AAC audio file") just fine also. So I seem to have norrowed it down to Apple's new protected formats called "Protected AAC audio file"
So far this is all I've got. Anyone else have any ideas

  • Error 4280 - I can't burn purchased songs to disc.

I'm not a technical person and I've wasted an entire day trying to resolve this issue - I've followed suggestions on other threads which suggest burning tracks as data cd rather than audio etc but stll no luck. Basically I try to burn a disc, select the tracks, hit the button (as I've always done until I updated itunes recently)and after a few seconds I get the error message "Unknown error 4280". Seems this is a well documented problem and having googled the error message there are a number of sites offering a fix - can / should itunes assist? I'm paying for tracks I can only play on my ipod and I'm a bit miffed!

    Hi all,
Ditto re Error 4280 when attempting to burn an audio CD. My steps were:
    1) Upgrade to latest iTunes software (version 7.6.0.29) on Feb 1st
    2) Purchase an album from iTunes store (Cat Stevens).
    3) Attempt to burn playlist....
    3a) Checking media - OK.
    3b) Checking playlist - OK.
    3c) Burndisc - initialising
3d) Writing "Moonshadow" - CD/DVD drive spins up ok. A few secons later....
3e) Message on screen "Cancelling disc burn. This may take a minute or two"
3f) Message on screen "The attempt to burn the disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4280)"
    4) Attempted exactly the same steps on my sons computer (bless his heart), iTunes version 7.5.0.20. It worked first time (after I had double checked "store/authorize computer" was set okay).
I am not at all keen to start playing with Gear drivers or similar until Apple themselves advise. I should not have to fix something I did not break.....
    Cheers,
    Aussie Tony.

  • Error 4280-- wont burn CDs

I've been trying to burn CDs since getting the new iTunes 7 and after i press burn CD, it will look like it's working until it starts to burn the first song on the playlist, and it simply says "Canceling Burn Disk this may take a minute or two" and then it spits the CD out and says "unknown error 4280". • Unable to burn cd's: error 4280

I tried using the disc burner and after it seemed the disc was starting to burn, it stops and gives me a message that the burn was cancelled then I get a dialogue box with unkown error 4280. • Yet another CD burn error (4280)

It seems that the 4280 problem is fairly common. In my case, ever since Itunes was updated, I've had problems with trying to burn CDs. It would always stop and then say "unknown error-4280". • Attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4280).

I put a blank CD in. I open iTunes. I click on a play list and attempt to burn. It checks the play list like everything is fine and seems like it begins to burn the first track. Then after a few seconds it says *_canceling disc_*. It ejects the CD and an error message comes up: "_*The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (4280).*_" I thought that the new update (7.6.2) might include a fix for this. No such luck of course! Have had this problem for awhile and have researched it on the internet. I am not the only one with this problem and people have been posting about this error since 2005! CDs burn fine and Media player. What's the deal? I thought Mac was supposed to be superior to Windows? I have a Slimtype DVDRW SSM-8515S drive. I have tried HP's solutions, lower burn speed, clicking this and that, ect. Please help. This problem makes me wish I didn't have an iPod. The only reason I started using iTunes was because of the iPod. +Not happy with this or Mac at all+. I don't care how cool their commercials are!

  • Unknown Error Occured 4280

I never had a problem burning music to any brand of audio cd's until I upgraded to iTunes version 5. Now I can't burn a cd. I have upgraded twice and I now have version 6. I have a Dell 4600C. I have slowed the burn speed down to the slowest speed possible. It will start the burn and go for 20 seconds or so, then a window pops up and it says," The attempt to burn a disc failed. I am really frustrated and I wish I would have never upgraded to the newer version of iTunes. Any help anyone can give me will be hugely appreciated.

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me.
I have never had issues before but in the last few days it has been HORRIBLE.
I have brand new CDs to burn to and sometimes I get an error to insert a blank disc(how can it not be it is brand new)
Other times I try to burn a disc and get:
"the attempt to burn a disc failed and unknown error occured(4280)
I have deauthorized and reauthorized my PC. Some of the songs I am burning are ones I loaded from a CD that I had burned one before with NO problems.
I have wasted at least 10 CDs in the last few days trying to get this to work.
I have checked EVERYWHERE for a list of Error Code numbers but I can find it anywhere.
It will check playlist then start to "write" a song and it stops.

The last failed audio CD burn had error code 4280(0x000010b8). It happened on drive F: PHILIPS CDD4851 CD-R/RW on CDR media at speed 8X.
Is there ANYONE that can help or at least point me in the correct direction
    Thank you

I've done a little bit of searching on google and had no idea that this problem has been happening for YEARS... The ONLY solution I saw was for this Sony Driver, which i'm sure everyone here already seen... I haven't had any problem burning until iTunes 8.0...
Anyway, I tried that (Sony Drive), even tried the RegCure (whatever) but it wasn't exactly "Free", so that was a dead end... I even tried lower burning speeds...still nothing... As you know, I have two discs left to burn for a friend...
I just gave up on iTunes and burned it with my Windows Media Player... Just lucky for me, I burn all my purchases from iTunes to an Audio CD in case something happens to my CPU (also so I can import to my Xbox 360)... And once I do that, I re-import them so I can listen to the albums on my WMP...
But as I was saying, I just used my WMP to burn the album that wouldn't burn in iTunes... After everything burned fine, I went back to iTunes for the other disc and suprise, suprise...it burned without any problem... WTH, right?¿?
It may have something to do with the discs i'm using... Because I inserted a Maxell Pro discs to "test" the burn out in iTunes... It burned without a hitch (before I used the above method) but because of this, I only let it burn for 5 seconds; because it usually cancels out in 3 from the error... I was only trying to test the burn, and was surprised that it started burning... It was a better quality discs and I didn't want to burn the album that I was testing on it... I tried to cancel but 5 seconds was too long...ruined the disc.. lol
So for clarity the disc i'm getting the error with is a Memorex disc... And its possible that they are to cheap...which was pointed out during my research online... But the problem with that theory is, I already burned 12 discs using those Memorex discs; so why NOW do I constantly get the error?¿? I couldn't be, totally the fault of disc quality...but then again who knows...
All I know is, as of now...I was able to burn another CD on iTunes after burning 1 from WMP first... Since I don't have anything else to burn (or that I want to) at the moment; as far as I know, i'm just waiting to get the error again... Which from my history could be 4-6 more disc down the line...
Another possibility could be that I actually burned the CD when I had WMP open... Maybe iTunes burning needs a "crutch" to be free from the error and after you burn one; you can burn a few CD's without worry of the error...
Sorry to be throwing so many "theories" out there, but having something to work on, is better than nothing... Once I have other CD's to burn, i'll come back with an update and tell you how many burns I got with iTunes before I got the error again...
    Disclaimer:
This is just my experience... I realize that many people have tried all sorts of CD-R discs and different burning software/hardware/whatever and they still get an 4280 error... I'm not trying to create false hope, as i've seen being pointed out from frustrated users...
So to summarize, individual results may vary... :P
