Unknown Error (-50) and iPhoto

Every time I try and sync my iPhone with iTunes (Firmware 3.0) it gives me the "iPhone can not be synced because of unknown error (-50)" message.
I have narrowed it down to a problem with one of my iPhoto albums that have over 1500 pictures. I don't understand it, it was working fine, then all of a sudden, it started giving me this error.
Does anyone know how to resolve this? I am running iPhoto 09 an the new Macbooks.

Here's a bump, because I'm getting either this message or "the required disk cannot be found" whenever I try to sync.
There are archived threads and a KB article that talk about how to fix this on Windows, but I haven't found anything on the Mac. This seems to pop up in the forums, across a wide range of iPhoto versions; I'm running 5.0.4 on an older MDD PowerMac G4.
Just synced this a couple weeks ago, with up problem.
Any word on what to look for on a Mac experiencing these problems?

  • Unknown Error (-50) (and iPhoto '09 I suspect)

I just installed iLife '09 - hurray! but...
I plugged my iPhone in to sync and got the message:
"The iPhone cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-50)."
So I hit the "Restore" button in iTunes. Same problem.
I then noticed as I was clicking trough the tabs of my iPhone in iTunes that my photo albums had disappeared from the photos tab. So I tried deselecting the "Sync photos from iPhoto" box, hit Sync again and what do you know, no more unknown error.
So I think there may be a bit of an iPhoto '09 - iTunes - iPhone sync bug.

I had the same problem and fixed it using the following method. Note this is not for the faint hearted!
Firstly the issue seems to be a corruption in the AlbumData.xml file. This file is written out to disk by iPhoto to allow other applications to interact with your photo library.
During the upgrade to iPhoto 09 it seems my library picked up some damage which was causing this file to be written incorrectly. In my case I had a number of control characters in this file that were causing the issues with iTunes.
To fix this problem do the following.
    Quit iPhoto.
    Then start a Terminal session.
run the following command to identify issues in the AlbumData.xml file:
    xmllint ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/AlbumData.xml
Either you will see a list of errors or you will see a copy of the file dumped to the terminal window. If you see a list of errors note the line numbers. If you see the xml content of the file (ends with </plist>) then you have another issue and I can't help further.
The next step is to identify the cause of the errors, load the AlbumData.xml file in vi, I guess any text editor will do as long as it shows the line number your cursor is on.
    vi ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/AlbumData.xml
    first show the line numbers
    <esc> :set number
Then press the escape key and then type the line number of the first error followed by <Shift> g i.e. 'G'
for example to go to line 100 type:
    <esc>100G
vi should move to line 100
If you see control characters (vi shows these as ^x) then note the id of the image causing the problem, it will be listed close to the error. Repeat until you have identified all of the problem images.
Start iPhoto and export the problem images to a backup folder and remove them from the library.
    Quit iPhoto and restart iTunes.
Hopefully you should now be able to sync photos to your iPod or iPhone.

    Hey joshuafromisr,
If you resintall iTunes, it should fix the issue. The following document will go over how to remove iTunes fully and then reinstall. Depending on what version of Windows you're running you'll either follow the directions here:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    or here:

Try and force iPod into Recovery Mode:
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPod
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

If you want to solve your problems, unjailbreak. And don't do it again, because jailbreaking causes problems as you read about in that article. You can try Recovery Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • Unknown error 1417 and 1418?

Help! I've installed an iPOD nano, previously used an iPod mini. It recognises the nano but can't download any msuic. Reinstal and Restore failed with unknown error 1417 and 1418. I've uninstalled old iTunes and iPod software and downloaded the latest iTunes and it still doesn't work -also noticed that the old name for the iPOD mini has been tranferred to the iPod nano but can't delete this - any ideas?

Thanks Kyle, you solved it - the Ipod was connected to a powered 4 way USB2 adaptor - when I connected it direct to a USB2 port in my desktop it worked OK. For all other 1417 sufferers: get rid of your USB adaptors, iPods obviously can't cope with sharing a port!
In answer to your question about the iPod mini it had one of those hard disk failures which shows a sad face - very sad when the repair bill is a standard 75GBP - over 100US$. Only 18 months old.

    Hi msclaude,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  I'm not sure from your post what steps you have tried, but it sounds like you may need to use recovery mode to address the issue with your unresponsive iPod touch.

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You can put your iOS device into recovery mode, then restore it using iTunes.
    Use recovery mode
You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:
iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes.
To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore your device. Restoring in recovery mode will erase your device. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you might be able to restore from your backup.Get more help

If you put your device into recovery mode by mistake, restart it. Or you can wait 15 minutes and your device will exit recovery mode by itself.
I hope this information helps ....

  • ITunes unknown error (-200) (and others)

Just switched from a iPod mini to an older 20 gig. Tried to sync it. iTunes crashed. Made me reformat the iPod. Lost all music on it. Also, no audio was playing. Told me to update iTunes. (thinking it would solve the sync issue) I did. iTunes wont open because of quote...
    "an unknown error occurred (-200)."
So I tried updating quicktime. Didn't work. Now audio wont work for QT player either.
I have tried past versions of iTunes and they wont load either (same error).
So now I have 2 empty iPods, and a computer that will not play audio or let me load my iPod. (websounds and other apps still work so it isnt the speakers themselves).
Any help on any of these things would be great. And spell it out please I'm not too keen on the procedures here.

Also, I have not moved any files since updating. Still won't do anything.

  • HT1926 How do I authorize a windows 8/64 but I/explorer computer? The Apple website is way out of date and the support led to an unknown error -42110 and the advice was wrong and inoperable from the support man Gulab

I have bought a New Computer as my Old one did it's HDD. I now have windows 8/64 bit  I/E 10 and am trying to Authorise my New Computer. I have downloaded the latest version and I got an ""unknown error -42110 "" .I went to te apple website and that says how to deactivate a SC folder or something in windows 7 or windows vista.
It also says to go to ""store|"" > Authorise Computer"" and I can't get anything,so I contacted  Apple support and I got some person called Gulab who sent me links to the same obsolete apple website which says exactly what I have said above.
I open iTunes and it lets me login with my apple id and says that I have $78.00 in credit and to be honest I can't understand the updated version/s let alone find how to ""Authorise "" my new computer.Gulab said to delete te sc Folder but the website (Apple) says this ios for windows 7 and windows vista.
Running around in circles. Apple website needs to be drastically updated instead of updating iTunes .
Completely confused and so is the support staff....lololooolololol

    (1) There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

  • Itunes wont start unknown error (-69) and cyclic redundancy check

I use an ipod shuffle and am on itunes 6 (or 6.1 maybe) on my windows compaq presario laptop. I was burning a number of disc from itunes and all seemed ok. The shut the computer down and the next day came to do the same thing and itunes wouldn't start the application with an unknown error (-69). I am also getting a cyclic redundancy error when I try to delete some music or picture files now aswell. I have tried to uninstall itunes and reinstall but this hasn't helped. I thought I might delete all my music and pictures off the hard drive as they are also copied and stored on an external drive but it wont let me delete certain music and picture files now. Can anyone help. Have tried to do a CHKDSK on my pc but that's not helping either and it is running very slowly now. Anyone had the same problem and been able to resolve it??

When you install from a CD, that CD could have been manufactured several months prior, and not have the latest anti-virus definitions.
While an internet connection is probably the most common vector for an infection, its not the only possible one. Any CD, removable drive, etc could be the source for a virus.
Because the computer is also running slow, its possible you have other applications running in the background. Some of which may have been inadvertantly installed.

  • Unknown error (1417) and (1428)

  • TS3694 what causes iphone to give " iphone could not restored. An unknown error (16)" and how to resolve it?

I was trying to update iphone 4 with new iOS 7 and all of a suddent the phone is stuck in restoration mode and while trying to update with new iOS, it give an error message that reads like "iphone could not restored. An unknown error occured (16)" in itune page. I am not able to figure out what is causing it and how could it be resolve? please help with the probable options.

If you read the error messages in the support document that you linked from, you can see that error 16 can be traced to either a USB error, or a hardware error. I would try the recommendations under those sections in the support document and see if you can take care of it. Otherwise, I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar at Apple to have the hardware checked.
