Unknown error (-9812)

greetings all. Recently my wife had got me a iTunes gift card and when I went to redeem it, I got a pop-up window stating that there was an unknown error that occurred with the code 9812. I'm using the newest version of iTunes, v. 8.2.0.23, I also followed the trouble-shooting guide up front to make sure my firewall exceptions were good, which they were. Any help appreciated, thanks!
- Matthew

I have the same error:

  • ITunes Store Unknown Error -9812 when trying to Activate iPhone 4

Hi, I have received my lovely new iPhone 4 and I can't activate it, the error I get is: "an unknown error occurred (-9812)" when trying to access the store.
My configuration is iTunes 9.2.1.5 (64 bit) on Windows 7 (64 bit)
    Can anyone advise?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
Have you managed to find a solution to your problem as I am having exactly the same issue. And I am fed up with re-installing i-tunes!
    Thanks

  • Receiving unknown error (-9812) when trying to download songs.

    Each time I try to download or purchase songs, I receive the following message;
We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occured (-9812)
This has continued for several days now. I have tried running diagnostics - Which informs me that iTunes could not establish a secure connection - and have also followed advice on network and firewall settings. An email sent to me by iTunes support also failed to rectify the problem.
I currently use Mozilla Firefox as my default browser and saw no change when I reverted back to using Internet Explorer 7. ( However, the problem did occur after installing Mozilla, which is also the only recent installation performed) My iTunes software is also currently up to date.
I would be grateful if anyone were kind enough to please help me with this issue, it is driving my girlfriend and I crazy. Thank you.

Having the same problem I tried to use FAQs, apple support and so on without any help.
Apple is using connections "deep inside" Windows and security certificates to safely connect to the iTunes store. Therefore the normal answer by apple is to refer to network connection problems and the Microsoft support.
On the german website, apple support even refers to a microsoft service page no more existing.
The problem is: Apple does not really care if you are having trouble with an Windows connection problem. They suggest to contact Microsoft for support without even stating which security certificates or such are needed.
The only solution as far as I know is a complete new Windows installation. A new iTunes installation is no help as the user account - if any - is no longer available. I tried this and now can't even listen to my legaly purchased music anymore.
Sad to realize that excellent sales and good reputation with iTunes and iPod leaves Apple in a position not needing to cope with unhappy customers... There are too many others.

  • Anyone have a fix for Unknown Error (-9812)?

Whenever I try to log on to my iTunes account, I keep getting the following message:
"We could not complete your iTunes store request. An unknown error occurred
(-9812). There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later."
I've tried shutting down my router and modem (something that was recommended on another thread), going into my Kaspersky Security/Firewall settings and adding iTunes.com to the list of trusted sites, but all with no success. Can anyone help me... PLEASE?

Oh - I answered on your other post.
Try turning your cable modem off for a minute.
Here's an article on that error, easily found by googling itunes error 9812:

  • How to find out podcast's URL (to add it manually; iTunes Store error -9812

I'm trying to subscribe to the free podcast called TEDtalks. I've located it in the iTunes Store, but when I hit "subscribe", I get "unknown error -9812". Same thing when I try to log in to the store. Nothing I've tried helps resolve this error (it started after I added some SSL certificates to my keychain). Anyway, I want to add the URL to this podcast to iTunes manually (through the Advanced menu). How do I find out the URL? I've done this before for other podcasts, but I just can't seem to figure out what the URL is for this one. I can subscribe to it on another Mac; if I do that, can I get it to display the URL it's using so that I can add it by hand?

    Graham K. Rogers wrote:
That is a bit of a nuisance as the site itself does not have an easily visible URL for the podcast. Fortunately, a Google search comes up with Learn Out Loud which shows this:
as the feed URL. Copy and paste that into the advanced menu of iTunes.
awesome!! Thank you so much. The darn TED website doesn't have it and I spent a lot of time googling looking for it. And the iTunes store doesn't let me log in. But this does the trick - fantastic.

  • An Unknown Error Orrurred (-9812)

Started receiving this error last week: "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-9812). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later."
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
What I've Done: Formatted driver, reinstalled Windows 7 64bit then iTunes. Still get the error when I try to sign in. Then formatted the drive again and installed Windows 7 32-bit. Same problem.
Everything was running perfectly until last week. When I tried to purchase an album I received this error. Signed out and haven't been able to sign in since. Sync to the iPhone also removed ALL of my purchased apps. I am now dead in the water and cannot authorize my computer or sign into my account. Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Unknown error occurred (-9812)

I was updating my software for my ipod and I believe it was in its final stages and then I suddenly get this message that they couldn't complete my itunes store request and an unknown error occured -9812. It shows my ipod synced but I cant access my ipod page, I get that message, so I cant restore my settings on it nothing. Regular itune store works fine. Someone PLEASE HELP ME

I am having the same problem. I just bought my iTouch today to replace my faithful iPod Classic of 6 years. It worked fine for the first hour, then iTunes said there was an update for it. I clicked "download" and now every time I try to access my iTouch through iTunes I get the error message "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occured (-9812)"
What annoys me is the instructions to restore the iTouch to it's default "new in the box" settings are "Access your iTouch through iTunes." That's like telling someone who can't access their email account that instructions on how to do so will be emailed to them. I suppose I could drive to the Apple Store in town & have the Genius Bar fix the problem, but why do I have to go to an expert to do something that two years ago could have been done by holding down three buttons until the screen flashed?

  • Error (-9812) ?

im trying to purchase a song from the music store and keep getting this error message. it completey reads "iTunes could not connect to the Music Store. An unknown error occurred(-9812). Make sure your connection is active and try again." well my connection is active and i cant figure out what is wrong, any suggestions?

Really short answer: most likely your antivirus/security software is inadvertently causing interference. Temporarily turn off your antivirus software -- especially a firewall or anything that scans anything. Then authorize your computer in ITunes, sign in, and get your music playing. Then turn everything back on.
Technically, all you really need to turn off is web antivirus scanning. For most users, though, it is simpler and easier to just temporarily turn off the whole security suite (emphasis on temporary).
Each security suite is different. If you happen to be using Kaspersky Internet Security version 6, first make sure you have the latest rev from kaspersky.com. Then, to just disable HTTPS scanning, go to Settings | Web Antivirus | HTTP (click on blue writing) | check "do not check encrypted connections".
Apple tech support is recommending going through a MS Knowledgebase article on other threads in this forum. That KB article suggests many highly technical things to check on. For 99% of users with this problem, however, web anti-virus scanning software (which uses certificate switching to do what it does) is probably the cause. Thus, I would suggest this troubleshooting step before going through the MS KB article steps. Good luck.

  • Keep getting error (-9812) message in itunes

Hello, I really hope someone can help me.
I am currently unable to sign into itunes as each time I try I get the message - We could not complete your itunes store request. An unknown error has occurred - I have never had any problems before however so I have no idea what to do.
I was hoping to take advantage of the home share so me and my girlfriend could have both our iphone on it and my ipod.
Please could someone help explain what has happened.
    Kind Regards

  • I cannot get anything to work (error -9812)

If I click on 'buy' a pop up says, "iTunes could not connect to the Music Store. An Unknown error occured (-9812). Make sure your network connection is active and try again." Nothing happens when I click on 'iTunes music card' on the home part of iTunes. My connection is fine. I have the latest version of iTunes.
I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling, then unstalling quicktime, and reinstalling the quicktime standalone.
I have McAfee Security. Is there something I need to change to allow the store? How do I do that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

Leah, I am so sorry, I was in the process of posting a different link last night concerning the -9812 when the forums apparently went down. I could not get in using either Safari or Firefox for nearly 2 hours, then I gave up. Here's the link I intended to post last night with new information specfic for the 9812.

  • Getting Error 9812 when trying to buy music from ITunes store

I want to buy one song from the ITunes Store. I am able to access the song, but when I push the "Buy Song' button, it says "Unable to access Itunes store - an unknown error occurred - 9812". I have tried to fix ITunes through the Control Panel - this did not help. I tried switching ethernet cords - this did not help. I am able to access the internet and receive email so I don't understand why I cannot access the store.

I had this problem just recently.
I discovered that the problem was located here: ROOT / Users / Shared  -- if you open that and the "adi" folder has a little red minus symbol in its corner, your permissions have somehow been lost. (If you can't see your root directory, open Finder Preferences and, under sidebar, check "Hard disks." That will make your root drive visible.)
If the "adi" folder has the red minus symbol, right-click the folder and select GET INFO.
Sharing & Permissions is probably set to "System: Read & Write | wheel: Read Only | everyone: No Access"
If so, your user account has no permissions, and that means iTunes can't use the folder properly.
To fix this, first unlock the folder using the padlock icon in the bottom-right corner of "get info." You will have to supply your admin password to do this.
Then click the little + sign in the bottom left corner to add a user, and select your user ID from the list of choices. Give yourself Read & Write permissions. (Alternatively, you could change the permissions of "everyone" to Read & Write; others have done that, but I was leery of doing it).
Re-lock the folder when you're done.
    Hopefully that will solve it.
