I get an "unknown error" when I try to update my ipad... no problem signing on at the website from a desktop, but can't update any programs or purchase any new ones in the apple store.

Go to Settings>Store >Apple ID, tap your ID and sign out. Then reboot the iPad, Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Then go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and sign in again and see if the apps will update.

Okay, so I'm trying to download a song I bought on my iPhone, so I clicked check for available downloads.
The login screen pops up, with a little red text "unknown error".
I re-type my correct password, the one I'm using for this. Then it says "You must have forgotten your password. It was entered incorrectly too many times." I only clicked it once, and I typed it right because I'm using it right now.

four days back, my power buttton stopped working.
Then my sim card slot stopped reading like it was stuck at gsm/cdma band.
Even without simcard it said searching..
then I changed the power button and antenna strip myself as my iphone5 is uk ee and i live in india.
Everything was fine and I booted the phone.
The power button worked like a new device... but the searching problem still remained.
I hard resetted my phone but to no vail. even Find My phone was not turning off.
then I forced my phone to recovery mode and downloaded iphone5,2 7.0.2,11A501_restore.ipsw from web and flashed it.
At the start it recognised and everything was good until the "restoring iphone firmware" was stuck at the end point.
I tried every trick on net. Even tried to downgrade.. but it was blocked.
at the last it is either stuck at firmware or itunes unknown error (3)
Please somebody help me to recover this PAPERWEIGHT to a phone again...

Perhaps, iTunes can't communicate with the Apple uodate servers. Temporarily disabling your firewall and antivirus software would help. Take a look at this.

This didn't solve it for me. Card details already there, and iTunes purchases working fine.

When I try to update it it does a whole load of stuff and appears to be downloading the update but when it comes near to the end it says that there was an error and a load of numbers and stuff appears.

Well based on the precise description that you've given us to work with, I can definitely at this point offer you this solution. Try deleting some stuff, and re-doing some other stuff, and see what happens.
Your going to have to be more descriptive than "load of stuff" and "load of numbers" if you are seriously looking for help.

IPad cannot be restored unknown error 1; I tried to update my iPad 1 to new os5 by syncing to new version of iTunes and found a message that my iPad needs to be restored. I tried several times and continue to get same error code unknown 1; how to fix?

When trying to sync my ipad to latest version of itunes, it appears the ipad identity was lost and a message in itunes says to restore the ipad. However, multiple attempts to do this continue to provide the "This ipad cannot be restored. Unknown error 1" I have tried resetting my ipad which just brings back the screen to connect it to itunes. I installed iOS5 last night and was having the same problems described above with my iPad 1 32 GB + 3G. Unknown Error (1) and was unable to restore.
I took my ipad to the local Apple Store today and was told by the genius that it was a hardware issue, and because the warranty had expired, there was nothing the Store could do. He suggested that I try calling AppleCare. Then I asked to speak with a manager. He apologized again and said there was just nothing the Store could do. I was close to leaving, when I asked a second time if it would be possible to see a Manager.
After asking a second time, he called a manager. After explaining my issue to her, she immediately authorized him to give me a new iPad ! Anyone with this problem should definitely go to the store and be polite but adamant. You should get a new iPad.

Problem is...I do NOT know the password for this "old" apple id. I haven't used this apple id in over 1 year and it "suddenly" started to show up. I can NOT update or down load any updates without knowing the old apple id's password either. I am getting help. I was able to contact tech support and they are in the process of helping me within an email reply to "reset" my password from that old Apple id, in the next 24 hours.
Thank you all for your help! I hope we are able to resolve this issue. Again, it is very odd that my "old" email or original Apple ID decided to appear after such a long span. I will keep you all posted as to how it was resolved when I hear back via an email.
