Unknown Folders, an idots quest

Mornin' all. I have read through a raft of questions ref "unknown albums" and how its a tag issue, but I would like to ask if there is a way for a ZEN just to read the folder name for the album title or does it HAVE to read from the tag's the songs are holding?
I'm not overly concerned about song names
I could really do with an idiots giude to all of this as I can see people talking about tagging etc but I really do not know that much about MP's on MP3 players as opposed to video etc.
Thanks in advance guy's n gal's.
The Mutz..!

Hello MutzNutz, the Zen will read your music information from the tags, it has nothing to do with your folder it is placed in. Album arts, however, is a different story.
The tags are simple to use, the more essential ones are:
Title, artist, album and genre. To update these tags, edit them by right clicking on your music and then properties. An easier way would be to use the Creative Mediasource Organizer.
Hope this helps!?

  • Unknown folders in Macintosh HD

    When I boot my iMac from the external HD, two extra folders show up in my Macintosh HD: "home" and "net". Are they supposed to be there? Are they normally hidden?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you for your quick reply
    It's just that I recently installed Snow Leopard on an SD card (to be used for troubleshooting purposes) and I wanted to make sure I didn't stuff anything up!!!

  • Mail database error and unknown folders - what are they?

    Hi - Forgive an elementary question: I administer a small office network, but am NOT an IT expert!
    We've been running OS X 10.5. server for quite some time and are now on 10.5.8 with client workstations all running 10.6.1. We've had a problem with a corrupt cyrus database reporting (amongst other things):-
    "DBERROR db4: Database environment corrupt; the wrong log files may have been removed or incompatible database files imported from another environment"
    This is well covered elsewhere, but despite downloading and running mailbfr I have not been able to get rid of the problem. However, my question is this: whilst rooting around the mail database I have found the following folders:
    var/spool/imap/^-^_-+^_-+^_-^-obscure
    var/spool/imap/^_-bingey
    var/spool/imap/^_-delegating
    var/spool/imap/^_-moustache
    var/spool/imap/^_-obscure
    var/spool/imap/^_-plebes
    var/spool/imap/^_-reinserting
    Each of these folders has a cyrus.cache, cyrus.header and cyrus.index file inside. I can find no relevant search results when I check these folder names out with an internet search, so I'm wondering whether these folders should even be there? Have they been installed covertly, and if so can I remove them without further damaging our database?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • User State Migration Tool - unknown folders from %userprofile%

    Hey,
    I try to configure USMT currently.
    It works really fine. Unfortunately only for specific folders & files.
    I got it working to define USMT to backup files just for "My Documents", "My Pictures" etc. in MigUser but I have problem that users created custom folders like e.g. %USERPROFILE"\MyCustomFolder. Unfortunately I do not
    know name of these folders.
    How can I define USMT to migrate files/folders in %USERPROFILE% I do not know name from, but not migrate folder e.g. "My Music" and %AppData% etc.?
    Thank you for help.
    Kind Regards

    Hey Torsten,
    Thank you for help - I think we are talking about different topics :)
    I know I can specifiy another XML in tasksequence.
    My problem is the XML-file itself.
    In MigUser are entries like:
    <!-- This component migrates My Documents files -->
    <component type="Documents" context="User">
    <displayName _locID="miguser.mydocs">My Documents</displayName>
    <paths>
    <path type="File">%CSIDL_PERSONAL%</path>
    </paths>
    <role role="Data">

    <detect>
    <condition>MigXmlHelper.DoesObjectExist("File","%CSIDL_PERSONAL%")</condition>
    </detect>
    </detects>
    <rules>
    <exclude>
    <objectSet>
    <pattern type="File">%CSIDL_MYMUSIC%\* [*]</pattern>
    <pattern type="File">%CSIDL_MYPICTURES%\* [*]</pattern>
    <pattern type="File">%CSIDL_MYVIDEO%\* [*]</pattern>

    All these entries are using %CSIDL_XXX% like defined in following Microsoft article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff383238(v=WS.10).aspx#BKMK_MigUser
    But there is no value for %USERPROFILE% to be able to specifiy %USERPROFILE%\*.

  • IFilter 9 64-bit deletes files and moves them into idividual folders

    Our fire department scanned thousands of documents using Adobe Capture and stored them on a Windows Server 2008 R2. We then installed iFilter 9 64-bit so Windows Search could make these documents searchable.  The second day iFilter was installed I noticed some unknown folders in the root of c: with names such as A9R2f4-115f67e8.  By the third day these had grown to thousands of folders, each with one PDF document in it.  I recognized the files as the ones that had be captured with Adobe Capture and checked their original location and found the files missing.  It appeared that in indexing the files Windows Search with iFilter was moving each file into an individual folder.  I removed iFilter and the problem stopped.  Luckily I had a backup and was able to restore the files to their original location.
    Months later I installed a new server at a different location.  Thinking this was possible a conflict with another program or service on the original server I copied the adobe documents onto this new and clean server and installed iFilter 9 64-bit.  Again, the first day things look fine but on the second day the folders once again started showing up in the root of C:, again I removed iFilter 9 and the problem went away.
    This would appear to be a bug in the program since it has happened to two server, one a brand new Dell R710 with nothing on it except the server software and Adobe iFilter and the PDF files that were captured using Adobe Capture. I have called Adobe and I was told they do not provide support for iFilter other than this forum.  If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate the help.

    Erwin,
    I was not able to systematically examine this issue, because it occurred on a production system and, of course, I uninstalled the Adobe iFilters as soon as I read that they may delete pdf files. Before the uninstallation I noticed the AR9 folders appearing on c:\ and moved them from time to time to another folder. Using the search function inside this folder, I found that all files were present in duplicate at least. I concluded, that after moving the AR9 folders they were recreated containing the same files. Consequently, these files cannot have been deleted. Searching for the origin of these files I found that they were part of pdf portfolios, therefore my conclusion that they are part of the indexing mechanism of the portfolios. What I have not done (and what I am not going to do since it is a production system) is to fill a folder with pdfs and track what is happening to the files.
    In case of my server, I think that the iFilters did not delete any files. Of course I cannot say what happens on other systems. I am definitely not going to reinstall the iFilters before knowing what they a really doing to the files.
    Not sure if this is of much help
    Michael

  • How to compare two libraries

    I recently bought a 17-inch MBP to replace my old WindTunnel G4 as my primary machine. (The G4 will still be in service as a server.) I'm in the process of bringing my iTunes library over to the MBP, a process that has been made much easier by Home Sharing in iTunes 9. Thank you, Apple, for this feature!
    My question is, when I connect to the shared library, iTunes on the MBP shows 41 fewer tracks than iTunes on the G4 shows. With nearly 200GB of music (over 40,000 tracks) in my library, manually comparing the two libraries to determine which tracks are missing would be an exercise in boredom and futility. Is there any automated way, any software, that I can use to compare the contents of the two libraries so I can locate the missing tracks and figure out what's wrong with them? I'm not averse to using Terminal if that's going to be the most straightforward way to do it.

    I am in the same boat as you are Mark. I only have about 88G and 16,000 tracks of music (that does not include any video), and in trying to manually compare two libraries from directory listings by hand is not the way to do things. I am also thinking that creating some output listings for the directory is the solution, but the directory structure is not the same, and would require some level of automation for dumping the differences. I am a tad rusty at my unix scripting to say the least, but I guess I could pull out some of the old reference books. Even if a properly specified ls command could give an output format to pull into an excel file? and then be able to do the diff there with some small tweaking ? I've gotten myself into a bit of a mess with this (nothing that can not be resolved with some careful cleanup), but I don't want to have to rebuild another new library from my old master if I could do a diff between the two, so I can add the remaining 10G (estimated) that is missing in the new library.
    Hopefully by replying to your thread someone else will spot this and can give an assist.
    I am missing a lot more than 41 tracks, I am guessing a few hundred (200 - 300 plus?).
    One place to check on the old library is in the unknown folders? (unknown album or unknown artist?) and also to check under what is labeled as a compilations folder.
    I think what created part of my problem is that I suspect the new directory structure (part of the new iTunes version) placed on top of the old directory structure (prior iTunes versions - when the orig library was created back in 2003 and then moved to an external device) was something I did not clearly understand or investigate sufficiently prior to starting to move things around. I have not lost anything (i.e. the physical files are all still there in the old master, along with a backup), but certainly the new master is not in full synch with the old master.
    I would have preferred to be far less cognizant of some of these things, but as this exercise continues some of this gets unearthed.

    No, this is not a virus. There are no iPhone viruses. These hidden folders are used by the operating system: leave them alone.

  • ITunes does not recognise music

    i have a major problem. i have approx 500 songs on itunes that have not been recgonised by itunes under artist, song etc. this means that i have to click on each individual song (currently within an unknown folder in the itunes folder) and rename etc. this problem started when i transferred itunes over to external harddrive. what am i doing wrong? is there a quick fix? within my external hardddrive itunes folder these songs are under UNKNOWN FOLDER

    I have found a way for iTunes to recognise all the songs but its not a method that will associate every song at the click of a button. Basically delete the song listing in iTunes (im doing mine one album at a time) then go to File > Add folder to library, then select the appropaite folder from the file path. This way you can add an album at a time rather than just a song at a time.
    Not perfect I know, but it works!!

  • Network home folders owned by (unknown) user.

    I am seeing something strange happening and i will try and describe it as best as i can.
    This is happening in a middle school with about 750 users, 150 emacs(10.3.9) and 1 xserve(10.4.?).
    I am not sure if this is a capacity issue but it seems to happen when there are lots of users trying to log into the computers. There are several different work groups the students can choose from when they log in and at any one time there may be 60 to 100 users logged in with network home folders and 1 or 2 other auto mounting share points.
    Occasionally a few users will not be able to log in. A closer look will show that they are able to get passed the login screen and choose a workgroup and actually log into a desktop environment but they are not able to access their home folder. If you try and access anything in their home folder you will get an error msg informing you that you do not have sufficient access privilages. Of course the documents folder that normally sits on the dock is displayed as a question mark, and trying to launch any application will fail as it cant access the prefs file stored in the users library folder in their network home folder.
    There are a couple different scenarios i have observed when looking at the permission information on the home folders.
    Scenario one: when i look at the permissions on the home folder using get info tool, the owner is a completely different user. Doing an ls -sl from the command line shows the same information.
    Scenario two: when i look at the permissions on the home folder using the get info tool the owner is (unknown). Doing an ls -al from the command line will show the owner as being a number. I assume this is a uid number, and the number is usually a uid that does not show up in workgroup managers current list of users, and i assume this is why the get info tool reports the owner as being (unknown).
    I can fix the home folder by using a chown -r but dont know why this is happening to begin with.
    Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.
    I have done some research on google but have not come up with anything concrete.

    This is not a definitive answer, but you are certainly pushing the capabilities of a single XServe. As best I understand it, the XServe is really meant to be part of a deployment of OS X server in an environment such as yours. You should really have at least one replica server for authentication purposes and a separate device, such as an XServe RAID, or at least another server to house network home folders. You should at least consider getting another box, even a dual G5 or Mac pro, make it a replica, and split the home dirs between the new box and the XServe. Think about it. You have a lot of users authenticating a buncg of shares and at the same time a bunch of users zipping all sorts of big and little dats files (like office or appleworks files) as well as all the web browser chache files and whatever other cache files are flying around. That's an awful lot for the XServe's network connection, nevermind the read/writes on the HD.
    So honestly, it would be really tough to tell if there;s just a bottleneck causing issues, or some other software/configuration error with that much traffic to a single server.
    And this is in no way meant to be a lecture - I learned a lot by trying a similar feat on my network

  • Folders of Full Cds showing up in one Unknown folder Help

    Ive ripped my Cds into WMA 28 bit files but then i ripped them and put them into a folder on my PC and then move them to Zen V Plus the go into unfolder and there no longer in different folders just 30 songs in unknown folder. This doesnt happen with every folder though so im lost?
    please help

    Sometimes the song's album and artist properties may not have copied over well, all you have to do is right click on a song, once its highlighted, and click on edit properties where you can put in the right band/album name.

    If you used migration assistant then it probably created a new Login user and placed the migrated files under it.

  • "Unknown Error" when attempting to move/drag a folder in the Folders Panel in Library Module. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Thank you.

    Hello fellow LR users,
    Last night, I attempted to drag one sub-folder into a different Parent folder but then I received the "unable to move & unknown error" notification. After a few more attempts I received the same notification. My solution was moving the folder into the different Parent folder outside of Lightroom. I moved the folder in my PCs Operating System.
    Has anyone else encountered this issues? Any solutions?
    Thank you,
    Daniel

    Your method of using the OS is considered best. If you copy (drag) a folder to a new place you simply right-click on the folder name in the LR Library and choose update folder location. Then navigate to the new location.
    LR automatically updates the catalog database. You can then delete the original folder.

  • Importing to iTunes moves previously proper files to unknown folder.  Metadata missing inside of iTunes.  Help!

    I've been having problems with iTunes for a long time now and have yet to find the solution.
    I store my complete library on my external hard drive.  When I import a CD into the iTunes on my Mac that had previously been imported on another computer, my iTunes refuses to recognize the artist and album information.  It only recognizes the track number and track name.
    I had imported tracks on a PC in WMA format, and converted them using iTunes on my PC to WAV.  They showed up in my iTunes on my PC just fine that way.  I then copied the new WAV files in their proper Artist/Album/Tracks folders from my PC's iTunes Media folder to my external drive.  When I import those files now on my external drive to iTunes on my Mac, the files move to Unknown Artist folder on my external drive.  I've got preferences set to place files in my external drive's music folder.  What can I do differently?
    I've tried "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" which then immediately takes files out of my organized locations and moves them to the Unknown Arist folder even when I'm not importing.  I've also tried "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library."  I tried just importing directly from a flash drive hoping it would copy files that were moments ago recognized correctly on my PC's iTunes to my external drive's Music folder correctly.  Doesn't work.  Still imports songs to iTunes with no artist or album data and places them in the annoying Unknown Artist folder on my external drive.
    When I import a disc directly to iTunes (sending it to the computer's iTunes Media folder when my external isn't connected), it recognized the data correctly.  Then if I connect my external and copy the files from the computer's internal drive to my external Music folder, delete the files in iTunes, and then import the files from their new location, they are then unrecognized as having Artist and Album information.  A few years ago I had no issue moving files this way and everything stayed organized.  I'm guessing Apple fudged something up in an update?
    What the heck?  Is there a different program I could use (whether on PC or Mac) that would import the disc information and keep the metadata attached and fix my issues?  I eventually will need to transfer my external drive's files to another drive, as externals are not permanent storage solutions, so when I eventually import all my music in iTunes again I won't have the time or the energy to rename every track independently.  Why doesn't the information recognized by iTunes remain associated with that file when I move the file to another location and reimport to iTunes?
    Any help would be sincerely appreciated.  This has been a long struggle for me with no answers and my music collection is extremely important to me.

    There have many reports here of large adds not running to completion. Sometimes it will die on a certain troublesome file, and sometimes there is no obvious reason.
    Since you have verified that the individual files seem to be fine, the workaround is to add the folders in smaller batches.

    Except that this issue is almost always totally unrelated to FCP at all.
    Paulo has dome great anecdotal advice but this is usually a fiel permissions problem. No idea how it gets changed but you can run Disk Utility and repair permissions. Do it twice. then Get Info on your drive and see what the privileges are. Do the same for your FCP projects folders. Get info on your FCP project file itself.
    You need to get this figured out before you invest any more time in editing.
