Unknown lens (& also known lens)

I had taken some photos from my Canon EOS 5D Mark II, using the the 24-105mm/f4.0L IS USM lens.
But on importing them into Lightroom 2.3, about 25-30% of the photos show "Unknown Lens" under metadata, whereas 70-75% of them correctly show "24-105mm f/4L IS USM"
Is it some standard/ known issue of Lightroom? Is there anyway to fix those few hundred photos so that they show the correct lens info?
Any tips/ advice greatly appreciated. Thx.

I don't recall any reports of this nature, so it's certainly not standard.
Lightroom gets the info from the Exif embedded into the original file by the camera. If some are showing the lens as Unknown then it's very likely due to the camera lens combination. Establishing what that might be will require some detective work at your end. For example, was the lens attached to the camera via a non Canon extender? Was the lens properly attached? Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the lens and camera?
Fixing the images you've already shot can be achieved in at least two ways. The first involves editing the actual Exif in each file using an application called ExifTool http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ Unfortunately, I can't offer any guidance on how you would go about it with this application. The second method involves saving the metadata for each file as an XMP sidecar (Save metadata to file in Lr Metadata menu) then using a text editor to search and replace ** the bad lens info. Most text editors can run this type of process as a batch, so it doesn't take long. When the files are fixed you would then use the Read metadata from file menu option to import the updated Exif.
Search for <aux:Lens>Unknown</aux:Lens>
Replace with <aux:Lens>EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM</aux:Lens>
Edit: the following link will take you to a GUI front end for ExfTool http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/ However, I don't no whether it allows you to edit the lens type

After loading Lion I cannot open open some pictures in Aperture. I get Unsupported Image Format, all files even the ones I can open are .JPG. Also it tells me picture was made using Canon EOS Rebel with unknown lens.

You mention that 'most' of your files are DNG. Try
running the effected files through Adobe DNG
converter again and then import your reprocessed
files to Aperture and see if the problem persists.
I had a problem with a batch of D2x files converted
to DNG which had been metadata tagged by
    PhotoMechanic (the evil app).
B.T.W. You mention that you had been using Bridge.
Are you getting any of the embedded XMP metadata
coming into Aperture during the import process?
Already tried that multiple times...no luck. I'm wondering though if it might be related to metadata as you suggest. I'm still trying different things to see what happens.
I was able to alleviate the problem on one set of images by painstakingly searching my external drive for the oldest backups I could find - CR2 files from before DNG conversion. I then ran those through DNG Converter and tried importing them again (this time, I embedded NO thumbnail, but I'm not sure if that made the difference - I think it was more likely a fluke in the original conversion that caused the problem). This time, it worked.
Now, the big problem is that I still have a couple hundred images for which I can't seem to locate the original CR2 files. I don't typically keep them after conversion, as I don't have the space for both.

  • Unknown lens

In past I took photos using unknown lens at that times.
With new version I have noticed the lens is already known to LR,
newly imported photos are listed with lens name.
But previously imported fotos are still listed under
    unknown lens
    in search by metadata panel.
Is there a way to "tell" LR to update it even for old photos?

    Try 'Read Metadata from File'.
Beware that it might overwrite any changes you might have made in Develop or Library module, if those changes have not been saved to xmp. So, before reading metadata, it's a good idea to save it first.

  • Photos look blurry in Aperture (Unknown Lens)

    Hello,
I see a strange behaviour in Apple's Aperture (latest version).
When I import new pictures, taken by a Samsung NX1000 and open the pic the first time it looks sharp.
After less than a second Aperture does something and I see the picture changes from sharp to blurry.
When I open the pic in Mac Finder the picture looks great.
Maybe it has something to do that Aperture does not recognize my lens?
I see that the camera model is correct but with "Unknown Lens"
    Hope you can help.
    - Attached you see a picture in Aperture (left), and the same pic opened from the Finder.
    - The picture on the right is much better. How is this possible? I just import the pic without
any editing into Apreture and get the mess.
LEFT > Aperture --- RIGHT > Same pic opened in Finder on Mac, look way better.

    Marc

    Hi Griff W!
What is the relationship between sharpening and un-adjusted Images in Aperture?  The article you cite says:
sharpening adjustments applied to the image may seem less apparent than they really are.
The OP specifies that the effect he is seeing precedes any adjustments made.  Are you implying that the article you cite includes the sharpening controls in the RAW Fine Tuning adjustment as part of its definition of "sharpening adjustments"?  This is important to know.  Thanks for your insight.

  • EXIF Tag problem / unknown lens

    Hi everyone,
I imported a few raw files in lightroom 3.4.1 (mac version, but this is irrelevant), all of them are from Sony cameras and different lenses.
From the command line, exiftool always reports the correct camera model/lens, but lightroom often does not.
From the exiftool documentation, it seems that Sony has a specific EXIF tag for the lens model, called "LensID".
However when LR generates the xmp, it does write some lens information in it, but I cannot understand where it reads from.
For example, I run a sample query on a raw file, which LR correctly identifies, asking all possible lens-related fields:
exiftool -Lens -LensID -LensModel -LensType -LensMake -LensSerialNumber _DSC0350.ARW
    Lens ID                         : Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
    Lens Type                     : Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
and in the corresponding xmp file I have:
      <aux:Lens>DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA</aux:Lens>
      <aux:LensID>46</aux:LensID>
and if I query directly the xmp file (which exiftool can do):
exiftool -Lens -LensID -LensModel -LensType -LensMake -LensSerialNumber _DSC0350.xmp
    Lens                            : DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
    Lens ID                        : Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA
So, the LR-generated "Lens" field in xmp is a *different* string.
If I repeat the same procedure on some different raw files (from different sony cameras), I get different results: most times the xmp contains no lens field, and LR says "unknown lens", even if the ARW does contain the same information shown above.
If I manually fix the xmp with exiftool and I force LR to reload metadata from files, then I get the lens identified.
Is it possible to fix this situation somehow?

In my opinion, it is not possible to get a reliable lens identification with Sony/Minolta cameras unless you have a lens lookup list which fits your actual lens collection. So that means that you either have to buy lenses which fits the lookup list in your identification tool, or use an identification tool which allows you to modify the lookup list. The latter option excludes using Lightroom for lens identification, as far as I know. I don't know about exiftool.
Old Minolta IDs have been reused by Sony when they released similar lenses, which I guess is acceptable but can result in Sony lenses being recognized as Minolta or vice versa. Even worse is that third party lens makers have released a lot of lenses where they use a more or less random ID from the Minolta lenses.
Here is an example of lenses using ID 25611:
    Minolta AF 75-300mm F4.5-5.6
    Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro
Sigma AF 300mm F4 APO Macro
    Sigma AF 500mm F4.5 APO
Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Asph
    Tokina AT-X AF 300mm F4
    Tokina AT-X AF 400mm F5.6 SD
    Tokina AF 730 II 75-300mm F4.5-5.6
    Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro
    Sigma AF 500mm F7.2 APO
(And now I just discovered that this list is incomplete, since the exiftool link posted by ixtab alos lists an ID 25611 Sigma 800 mm which is not in my list.)
To some extent, the correct lens can be picked from the list if combining ID, max. aperture and focal length from the EXIF. If ID is 25611, max. aperture is 4.5, and focal length is 500, it can only be a Sigma AF 500mm F4.5 APO.
But if ID is 25611, max. aperture is 5.6, and focal length is 300, there are actually 4-5 different lenses which match. With a little luck you only own one of those lenses and can give that lens the highest priority in the lookup list. That is why it is so important to be able to modify the lookup list.
I use a command line tool called alphalensinfo which does just that: Uses the combination of ID, max. aperture and focal length and allows you to modify the lookup list. The information is written into an .xmp file which is imported with the image into Lightroom.
I know that exiftool can do something similar, as stated earlier in the thread, but I have no experience with using it for this purpose (even though I actually do use exiftool in the same batch process to rectify the Orientation tag of the photos).

Go to Systems Preferences and click on the Mouse icon. You have a choice of how fast you want to track, scroll and the double click speed. There appears to be a MAJOR issue (hang/memory leak) in "about:home", also known as the Firefox Start Page, in Firefox 26.0, on Windows!
    observed on:
    - Windows 7 x64 machine with 12GB RAM and high-performance CPU (core i7-920)
    - Virtual Machine guest running WinXP SP3 (in Oracle VirtualBox) on the same machine
    - Intel Atom D525 netbook with 4GB RAM, running Win7 x64
Neither of these machines are connected via Sync or anything like that. The Firefox instance on the VM is a fresh/clean install.
    The problem:
    - 100% cpu usage for 10 seconds, memory usage (PF usage in XP) goes up to 1.7GB
    - if "about:home" is the Firefox Start Page, effectively it hangs the computer at Firefox startup for 10 seconds
    - if "about:home" is NOT the Firefox Start Page, startup is fine - BUT if I press the "home" button on the toolbar it loads "about:home" which causes the same issue again

Thank you cor-el! Your suggestion has solved the problem on my WinXP VM which I was using to test, and I will soon confirm that it has also solved the problem on my primary Win7 desktop.
    To recap:
    - I set "browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl" to an empty string
    OLD VALUE: https://snippets.mozilla.com/%STARTPAGE_VERSION%/%NAME%/%VERSION%/%APPBUILDID%/%BUILD_TARGET%/%LOCALE%/%CHANNEL%/%OS_VERSION%/%DISTRIBUTION%/%DISTRIBUTION_VERSION%/
    NEW VALUE: (blank)
    - I deleted the folder \storage\persistent\moz-safe-about+home under the Profile directory
Actual folder name on WINDOWS XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<PROFILENAME>\storage\persistent\moz-safe-about+home
However I have a concern that the '''OLD VALUE''' of "browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl" will creep back in, in a future update! Can you communicate this issue to someone on the development team?

  • Change author "unknown" into the known name of the author?

When I insert books from one serial of one writer into Digital Editions, some of the books give the writer's name, but other are remarked with "unknown". Is it possible in Digital Editions to change author "unknown" into the known name of the author?

Pages can export only its own documents. They may be exported as PDF, MS Word, RTF or Text files.
Pages can import (ie. Open a file as, or Insert a file into, a Pages document) documents in several formats, but won't rename the document as you describe. Documents that can be Opened (eg. Text, AppleWorks 6 WP, MS Word files) are converted to Pages documents, and retain their original names, with .pages replacing the original file extension. Files that can be Inserted (generally .jpg, .pdf and other image files) become part of the existing Pages file and lose their names.
It may be possible, using AppleScript, to extract the text you want and to Save a Pages file using that text as the filename, but that would depend in part on being able to identify which text is wanted and which is not.
How will the script determine where the author's name begins and where it ends?
How will the script recognize the beginning and of the title, an decide how much of the title to use in the filename?
How will the script recognize the year of publication?
For papers published in a specific journal, with a strict format for placing each of these pieces on information, or containing the needed information as searchable meta data in the file, this might be possible. But it would require knowledge of the structure of these files, and would probably handle only papers published in a specific journal or set of journals.
Outside my field of knowledge, but there are some talented scripters around here who might want to take a closer look.
    Best of luck.

    Barry

  • Message to all N95 US owners (also known as Nokia ...

    Hi all,
we have just received the following notification from the Nokia Software Update team:
Nokia N95 US version (also known as N95-3)
Nokia is aware of consumers' demand for a new software release, and our development teams are working to produce the new software as soon as possible. We estimate that the new software should be available early June.
Please note that your mobile service provider, operator, or carrier may not have approved the latest Nokia device firmware available. Nokia produces many different variants of each product (for different countries and languages) and not all variants will have the latest Nokia device firmware. It is our priority to update all variants as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any delay.
I wrote all my posts from 2005-2011 as an "Admin" for this community. I still work for Nokia as an external consultant, so my rank in all posts is now "Employee".

    Hi, Vandelay
It's good to know that Nokia is issuing this firmware update, many US N95 users have been waiting for it. I'm also glad that Nokia has begun discussing its US service problems on your new blog. Recent posts:
    - US N95 firmware update: http://urltea.com/37qe
    - US service turnaround time: http://urltea.com/37qg
    - Introduction to US service problems: http://urltea.com/37qf
However, Nokia's current firmware update process is, as Beth Kanter posted earlier (http://urltea.com/37qd), very clunky and difficult. Is Nokia planning to make its firmware update process any easier for its customers?
Also, if your firmware update process indeed has a "very low" failure rate, why do Nokia's own service reps discourage users from doing the update unless they're experiencing dire functionality problems? (Beth Kanter captured that happening here: http://qik.com/video/58581)
Also: Currently new N95-3 units in the US are being shipped with old firmware. ZDNet's Matthew Miller recently wrote: "Every other Nokia N95 has received a firmware upgrade, except for the N95-3 North American version that actually came out before some other devices." (http://urltea.com/37j1)
Given that situation, and the difficulty of your firmware update process, can Nokia arrange to update the firmware on new units *before* they are shipped to customers?
From the customer's perspective, it's extremely discouraging and annoying to receive a brand-new phone and immediately have to endure your currently cumbersome firmware update process. Your main competitor in the US high-end phone market (Apple) does not present consumers here with such obstacles.
Finally, does Nokia have any plans to release a Mac-friendly version of its firmware updater? Many N95 users are also Mac users, and it's a major hassle to have to get access to a PC for this function.
Again, I'm *very* glad to hear that you're issuing this update. That is progress. I'm hoping Nokia can address these other firmware-related concerns so you can become truly competitive in the US high-end phone market.
The N95 is a superior product in many ways, and I hope it succeeds here. I believe enhancing Nokia's US service sooner rather than later is the key to success in this market -- especially given that your key US competitor (Apple) offers fast and excellent service.
    Thanks,
    Amy Gahran

  • LaserJet 3020 (also known as Prod. No. Q2665A) -- where is the scanning software?

    Hi,
I have a LaserJet 3020 (also known as Prod. No. Q2665A), with which I would like to do scanning, when using a Windows 8.1 machine (64 bit).
When I go to the HP support page, none of the downloadable software seems to be about scanning, it's all just about printng.

  • Unknown lens - leica m8

the metadata in aperture shows my lens info as unknown (i am using 6-bit coded lens), also the aperture is not displaying.
    what is wrong??

    Try 'Read Metadata from File'.
Beware that it might overwrite any changes you might have made in Develop or Library module, if those changes have not been saved to xmp. So, before reading metadata, it's a good idea to save it first.

    Thanks Tony,
Yes the supplied profile works - in my test shots it corrects distortion and vignetting nicely - but it is a pain to have to pick the proffile by hand for each shot.
My real issue is Lightroom not correctly identifying the lens and listing it as "Unknown" in the meta data. Was hoping there was a way to teach lightroom to recognize it - or a config file to hack to make it recognize the lens.
For testing puposes I changed the raw format of my Pentax from DNG to PEF but got the saame result.
    Anyone else have ideas?
    Jim

  • Unknown camera and unknown lens

    Hello,
For some reason today, Aperture is not recognizing my camera or lens when I import images from my memory card.  There is no photo or exif metadata being reported by Aperture for the photo's imported today.  Photo's that were imported last Monday have the correct photo and exif metadata.
Photo's were taken with a Nikon D7000 and 35mm f1.8 DX lens.  I used ViewNX2 to grab the metadata from one of the photo's on the memory card and the camera make and lens information are correct.  When I open the file in Preview.app I can see the following metadata in the "Exif" tab:

I noticed the Lens ID in the Aperture metadata shows -2,147,483,648.  That seems odd to me.  However, the Lens Model, and Lens Info appear correct.  I checked the Lens ID number with Preview for one of the photo's in Aperture where the metadata appears correctly and it is the same -2,147,483,648 number.  So, I surmise my camera likely does not use this field.  From the "TIFF" tab I have the following metadata:
    Artist:
    Copyright:
    Date Time: 2012-10-14 11:13:36 AM
    Make: NIKON CORPORATION
    Model: NIKON D7000
    Orientation: 1 (Normal)
    Resolution Unit: inches
    Software: Ver.1.02
    X Resolution: 300
    Y Resolution: 300
The Make (Nikon Corporation) and Model (Nikon D7000) appear correctly.  There is a "Nikon" tab as well which reports:
    Flash Setting: NORMAL
    Focus Mode: AF-S
    ISO Setting: 0, 400
    Lens Type: 6
    Quality: FINE
    Shooting Mode: 1
    Shutter Count: 8,823
    White Balance Mode: AUTO1
None of this metadata makes it into Aperture for any of the photo's imported today even though the metadata is being viewed with Preview directly from the corresponding JPG files imported into the Aperture library.
Other information that may or may not be relevant:
I reinstalled Aperture a little over a week ago because the names of the adjustment bricks suddenly changed to names that all started with "DG..."
Adobe Flash suddenly stopped working when viewing an online video today and I could not view a flash video from any website after that.  I uninstalled and reinstalled Flash.
OS X 10.8.2 supplemental update was installed today after I noticed this problem (from 10.8.2).
    Any idea's?
    Steve

    Update.
I trashed the preferences and moved the ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture folder.  No change.
I created a new library, imported a photo and then could not see the project.  Quit and Aperture will not open the library but I can open it with iPhoto.  Sure enough, the imported photo does not have the photo or exif metadata.  However, if I create a duplicate of the exact same photo from the master directory in the library and import it again using iPhoto, the metadata appears.
So, definitely an Aperture issue.  Will try another reinstall.
