Unknown "(Mac OS 9)" Directories Appearing in at the Root
I was working on a remote Linux server just a few days ago and confused which terminal window was which and accidentally pulled a directory listing of my own local hard drive. Naturally, it was a very minor goof but what I noticed was totally shocking to me. Here's a portion of the output:

As you can tell, there's a host of odd files that I cannot account for. Their dates indicate that they're older--perhaps left after an upgrade or something similar but I'm completely at a lost. Anyone else seen these files or can give me any insight?

Everything displayed would be normal except for those listed in bold followed by the "(Mac OS 9)". The actual file names: mach, mach.sym, sbin, etc. are all typically OS X filenames and part of the underlying Unix system. However, I have no idea why the "(Mac OS 9)" is part of the filenames. I would instead expect to simply see the names without that addition.
I would be especially careful what you do with them. Some of them are directories (Volumes, sbin, var, tmp, bin, etc, dev, and Network) the others are binary files (mach, mach.sym, mach_kernel.) Deleting the wrong file could render the OS non-functional. It's also possible that they may be aliases or symbolic links.

"On My Mac" category in mail appears twice in the Sidebar
Some time after upgrading to 10.5.1, I suddenly had two headings titled "On My Mac" in the sidebar. Each shows the same folders, the same number of unread messages, but typically only one of them will expand after clicking the triangle next to its title. Sometimes it's the first one, sometimes it's the second one. Sometimes clicking on the triangle expands the other instance of "On My Mac," sometimes it's the one I click. Sometimes both open, though usually one is unresponsive to clicking. My Mail folder in Library shows only one set of the mail folders in the Mailboxes folder. This doesn't seem fatal, but it is inconvenient and silly not knowing which one of the two headings to click.

I am also having the same problem. Although I can click the triangle next to the top instance of "On My Mac", it only opens the top instance. Anything else I do to this top instance (click the triangle, drop mail into a folder) actually takes place on the bottom instance - eg although I drop the email over a folder in the top instance, the graphic highlight to show which folder I am hovering over actually appears on the bottom instance.
I have only installed Leopard for the first time over the weekend and hence went straight to the 10.5.1 version. The only system changes I have made is to put double scrollbars at both ends of the window (using Terminal command) and I have Default Folder installed. I don't think any of the other applications I have installed should affect this.

In my MAC OS X 10.6.8 appear this msg "The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error (PARM)"
When I called Adobe, I was pretty much told that they would not offer any assistance. I offered to purchase the incident support, but they said that wasn't an option with this problem. I had to badger the guy just to get him to say that he believed it was caused by an inability of our network account users to write to the local hard drive. What is below is the results of my attempts to research and solve the problem from that point.
The way we addressed it was to make a second partition (only 10GB) on the local computers and give full read & write access to it for everyone. Then, we instructed our students to set their Scratch location to that new partition. This does indeed resolve the [PARM] error and some problems trying to save and open large files. It does not address the SUITEPEA errors we are getting in our console log though.
To change the Scratch location:
- click Illustrator in the menu bar
- select Preferences
- click Plug-ins and Scratch
- use the drop-down menu to change the Primary scratch disk
- click OK
Sadly, the above must be done per each individual user and I have not yet found a way to push the preference using Workgroup Manager since the Illustrator preference file is not a normal .plist and the Scratch portion is a rather lengthy string of characters. Adobe did not make this one easy on us and they're not willing to support it (or weren't in my case).
I wish the rest of you better luck than I have had on this issue.
The funny thing is - if Adobe used /Users/Shared for the default scratch location instead of whatever location it currently is, I don't think this would be a problem since all users (in a default Mac OS X install) have full access to /Users/Shared -

E4200 multiple unknown MAC's in filter list
I have a few desktops in my home network with a new E4200 router.
Have to add my wifes Lenovo notebook to the net and activated MAC filtering as addition to the WPA2.
Set her MAC address in the filter list. Only one MAC is allowed to access WLAN.
An hour later I see in the Filter list four (4) different and unknown MAC adresses added to the list. (???)

That is not correct. You cannot crack WPA2-AES in a couple of hours. Reaver doesn't crack the WPA2-AES keys. It cracks the WPS PIN which allows you to retrieve the WPA2-AES directly from the router. WPS is like a backdoor into the router to retrieve the passphrase. WPA2-AES is still extremely secure. If you could disable WPS the WPA2-AES network would be perfectly secured.
WPA2-AES cannot be cracked at this time.
The wireless MAC filter generally doesn't provide security. MAC addresses are always transferred unencrypted thus they are very easy to find. I would not bother with the wireless MAC filter.
I think the appearing MAC addresses is a bug in the router firmware. But it's difficult to tell if you don't post the MAC addresses you have found...
This does not apply to the majority of Linksys/Cisco wireless routers w/gimped firmware unable to turn WPS off. Their WPA2-AES can be 'obtained' easily in a couple hours...

Just open your LG volume up likes its an external HD and drag all photos onto a folder in your macbook Air.

If you use Windows program to partition the Hard Drive, the Apple partition gets destroyed.
Windows does not understand it is a guest on your Mac, and throws garabge wherever it pleases. -

On OSX 10.6.8 Mac Mail sent items do not show the Bcc field. Adjusting settings in mail/prefs/viewing/custom/bcc has no affect on Mail, ie Bcc still does not appear on sent items. Yet another example of Mac caring not a jot about the performance of versions of OS and software running on on older hardware. Anyone got a fix by any chance? Oh and fyi I need to see the Bcc in sent items to confirm sent email is attaching to Salesforece - when I see the Bcc I know I can delete it as a copy will be in SForce. Big thanks W.

I have a Creative D100 wireless speaker. How do I get my bluetooth on my Mac to work with the speaker. It doesn't appear to recognize the speaker.

YurijTry renaming the actual bundle first.
ie.
Rename bundle to
mybundleX.app
open bundle and rename executable and change CFBundleExecutable in the plist.
Change bundle name back to original
mybundle.app
Hopefully this will force it to remap the plist info. -
The picture ID on my outgoing Mac mail is not mine -- it's the photo of boyfriend of my mother in law is appearing as my ID photo. I have no link or connection with anybody or other accounts whatsoever, and I don't have ANY third-party networks myself. HELP!!!
Nobody but you sees that photo, it does not appear on outgoing emails.
To remove the picture rather than change it, open Address Book and select your personal card, then from the menubar select Card > Clear Custom Image. Now the system will use Apple’s generic user picture in the login window and System Preferences’ Accounts pane. Mail and Address Book will remain blank until you designate a new picture in Address Book or System Preferences > Accounts. -
When importing CDs into i-tunes should the artwork be there automatically. If not how do I get artwork to show in i-tunes and on my ipod. I had artwork with a PC but now I have a mac artwork does not appear.
I don't use iTunes's "fetch artwork", so I'm not 100% sure, but unless you are signed in to your iTunes account, artwork is not automatic. Even then, iTunes doesn't always find it.
You can copy-and-paste artwork from the inernet, either Amazon or Google. I use 300x300 pixel images.
For the future, if you have iTunes questions, you might be better off posting them in the iTunes for Mac forum, this is iTunes for Windows. In this situation, it doesn't make any difference, but next time maybe it will. -
