Unknown name in multiple speakers

On iTunes (10.2.2) I have an unknown speaker name in the Multiple Speakers pane.
I clicked on it whereupon 'This speaker is not compatible with this version of iTunes' pops up,
I can also see it as active through the Airfoil application.
Is this something I should worry about?
Thanks
Steve

  • AirTunes over AP Express-Multiple Speakers ERROR

    Hello everyone.
Have the latest version of iTunes and an AirPort Express.
Able to play AirTunes if the AP Express Unit is selected at the bottom of iTunes, i.e. only play through the speakers of the amplifier/av unit somewhere else.
If select Multiple Speakers and include 'This Computer', an error message appears:
An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "AirPort Express Name". An unknown error occurred (-3256)
    (OK button)
Then iTunes will continue to play on the computer's speakers, but the remote speakers will stay silent.
Under the multiple speakers mode, only 1 computer + 1 remote speakers
    Thanks and cheers

I have been plagued with the same problem as most here since installing Leopard. For some reason or another I could not setup AirTunes and view multiple speakers using my G5.
Now I realize that not everyone has a laptop and a desktop but here's what worked for me...
After a hard reset I created a network to airtunes using my PowerBook G4 and Airport Utility. At this point I was able to stream music to airtunes. I then changed the AirTunes settings, via the G4 to join my existing network, my linksys WRT54G router.
Like magic everything is back to normal. I can access iTunes multiple speakers on both my G5 and my G4 PowerBook just like I did when I had 10.4 loaded.
    Just my 2 cents...

  • I have a question about airplay multiple speakers in Mountain lion

I seem to be unable to use the "multiple speakers" feature in iTunes now that I've upgraded to Mountain Lion.  Before, I was able to stream music from my iTunes to two airport expresses throughout the house, simultaneoulsy with the computer's speakers.  Now it seems I can't.
When I select "multiple speakers" and click on the appropriate airport express, I get a dialog box that says "Connecting to Airport Express", which gives up after about 45 seconds of trying to connect.
Here are the things I've tried:
    1. In System Preferences, I've changed the audio output from computer to the airport express, which successfully sent the audio to the airport express.  But the system preferences audio tab just lets you select a single output destination, not multiple.  So I know that the speaker works, and that OSX still "likes" it.
    2. There has been mention on various boards that my computer no longer has the system requirements for this feature.  I want to know if that that's true.  (Full description of system below)
    3. I've used the trial of airfoil, which works beautifully, exactly what I want it to do.  But it costs $30, and I'd rather the pretty new operating system I just bought would work!
    4.  Another clue might be from the airport utility app.  It claims that my airport expresses are no longer supported by airport utility 6.1, and that I should downgrade to airport utility 5.6 to manage those expresses.  Unfortunately, mountain lion is not compatible with airport utility 5.6, so that's a dead end.  I'm not even sure that the answer lies with the airport utility app, because the system can still stream to the expresses, just one at a time.
    Any thoughts?

  • Can't stream to multiple speakers.

Just got a second Airport Express for my birthday and I connected it to my network. When I try to stream to more than one base station it says that neither supports playback as part of a group. I can do my computer's speakers and either base station; just not both base stations at the same time. Where is that setting?

    hello there,
At the bottom of itunes there is a little menu that will have your wireless network name in it. If you click on that you should see multiple speakers.
If you click on multiple speakers you will be able to select the ones you want to use.
I hope this is of some help

  • Itunes / Multiple speakers / airport Express

When I select multiple speakes in Itunes i get an error saying "an unknown error occurred (-3256)." I can select the remote speakers by them self and they work fine but when I select all speakers or multiple speakers I get the error message. what can I do?

Only firewall I have is what is standard on my mac, and if that is what your talking about, I do not know how you do that UDP traffic thing.

  • Airport Extreme + airport express - problem outputting to multiple speakers

    Hello,
I have set up my airport express by joining my existing Airport Extreme base station wireless network. When I play my music in iTunes, I am able to select either the Computer or Airtunes for the output in the drop down box in the lower right of iTunes. When I select Airtunes, the music streams no problem to my remote speakers connected to Airport Express. However, when I try to select Multiple Speakers in the drop down menu in iTunes, a pop up Remote Speakers box opens - when I select both the Computer and Airtunes in this box, I get an error message - "An errror occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "Airtunes". An unknown error occurred (-3256)." Since the error occurs only when I try to selct both the computer internal speakers and the remote speakers, but I am able to connect to the remote speakers by themselves, I am really confused. Any thoughts?
    Charly

Just to clarify, the goal is to play iTunes on both the computer's internal speakers and my remote speakers at the same time.

  • AirTunes: MULTIPLE Speakers NIT WORKING

    Hello all and Happy Holidays
I've posted this before but thought someone may have a solution to this.
I have an AXP installed in the living room and has an audio cable connected to my amplifier, AirTunes playing through this Remote Speakers work.
But when in iTunes switch to Multiple Speakers, to also play from my iMac, I get an error message:
An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "xxx". An unknown error occurred (-3256)
    (OK button)
Then the Remote Speakers will get cut off, and the computer one still playing.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Cheers and Merry Christmas!

iFelix, you are a genius! Such a simple solution to uncheck one option...
At least this one little thing is working this Christmas Eve; My other "big woe" right now is that I keep getting publishing error messages while trying to publish to my iWeb website
But I am not going to bore you on that, here's wishing you a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year, cheers!

  • Periods of silence when playing radio to multiple speakers

running itunes on an xp machine. apple airport connected to my stereo. when I have "multiple speakers" selected, I frequently hear periods of silence while the radio is playing (and therefore streaming to the stereo). also, with "multiple speakers" selected, I frequently can't start a station playing. I double-click on the station name and the name comes up in the display but it just does nothing. if I select "my computer" for the output, and wait about 5 minutes, the station will play fine. while it's playing, if I then select "multiple speakers" the station will stop and refuse to play again. and if I can get it to play, it "skips" with periods of silence. playback of local files is fine, in all configurations.

Hi Ian, thanks for that, I bought AirFoil, seemed to be just what I needed. Its a great piece of kit, I can even use my iPhone as a remote speaker! But it falls short of my requirements. To play music videos without a 2 second audio lag, you have to use the in built video player, which only allows single files to be loaded rather than a playlist, meaning each song needs to be loaded individually, which isn't perfect for parties!
I will keep looking for a solution. Really appreciate your help, I thought you had cracked my problem with Airfoil!
    Cheers

  • Multiple Speakers Errror

I just downloaded the new version of iTunes and everything seems to be working fine, except for one feature -- multiple speakers. Here's the deal, if I select Living Room (only), iTunes streams the music just fine. If I select Computer - same thing, works great. But if I select Multiple Speakers (Computer and Living Room), I get an error message -- "An error occurred while connecting to the remote "Living Room". An unknown error occurred -3256" Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks -- Craig

    Hi,
I have a following problems with the new iTunes (6.0.2) - I play my music through AirPort with AirTunes, yet when I wake up my iBook, iTunes changes AirTunes speakers to Multiple Speakers and put volume louder.
It doesn't remember AirTunes Speakers volume after I switch back manually.
It's really annoying, especially if one wasn't aware of it and used iTunes Alarm. It worked perfectly, though, even for my neighbours....

  • Airtunes won't play multiple speakers on Leopard 10.5.1

Airtunes won't play multiple speakers on Leopard 10.5.1
Everything was fine until Software Update to Leopard 10.5.1 last week.
Works great on other Tiger-Macs but not on new Leopard-Macbook 2.2
While attempting itunes launch with airtunes - Message window says:
An error occurred while connecting to the remote speakers "Airtunes". Unknown error (-3256)
Will play on computer speakers, or airtunes speakers but not both.
    Anyone experiencing similar??

  • No multiple speakers option in Remote for iPad

OK. By searching around here I managed to discover that the speaker selection option on the iPad is actually on the multi task bar (double click home button).
But I have now discovered that while the Remote app has the option for multiple speakers on my iPhone 4, it's not there on the iPad.
All my versions are up to date and everything works perfectly, I just want clarification that the option isn't available on the iPad.
If it is can someone help me get it activated?

Maybe you saw it / see it, but I don't and neither will anyone who looks at my iPad.
I updated fromn my iPad 1 which of course never had such an option.

  • How do i use airplay with multiple speakers simultaneously?

I am trying to play music simultaneously on multiple speakers in different rooms using airplay.  For some reason when i choose the "multiple speakers" option in itunes, the speakers that are connected by airtunes do not appear in the list.  They do appear in the list of options when choosing a single set of speakers though.

The multiple speakers option in iTunes is a windows that can be expanded. Is probably not expanded where you can see all the devices. If they show on the singles list, they also show on the multiples list.

  • HT5517 How can I choose multiple speakers to play simultaneously from AppleTV in the same way I can from iTunes on my PC?

Is there a way to select multiple speakers with Apple TV?

i don't think so if I remember properly... I've wanted to do that and I remember I couldn't... would be a good feature!

  • Using airport utility to control multiple speakers at the same time

Can I use the aiport utility on my Ipod to control multiple speakers/airport express units at the same time?  I am able to do this directly in ITunes but when I use my Ipod as the "remote" by using the airport utility it only seems to allow me to play music on one set of speakers at a time.  If I stream music to one set of speakers and then select a different set it stops the music that was going to the first set in order to stream it to the second set.  I hope that this is just user error and not a limitation of the airport utility because I just purchased a brand new Ipod in order to be able to do this (airport utility wasn't compatible with me 2nd Gen).  Thanks in advance for any help!

If you have not already done so, now would be a good time to perform a complete power cycle of the entire network.
Power off all devices...modem, routers, computers, etc....in any order that you wish
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the modem first, and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Power of the wireless router connected to the modem next the same way
Power of the other AirPort routers one at a time about a minute apart
Keep powering up devices one at a time about a minute apart until the entire network is back up
    Check the network

  • How to set up multiple speakers

I am connected to my stereo via AP Express. I would like to have the music streaming to those speakers and at the same time coming thru on my computer speakers. On the drop down menu at bottom of itunes I only get to choose one or the other - no provision for selecting both. There is no choice for 'multiple speakers'. Any ideas.
    emac 10.4.8 Itunes 7.0.2

All I remember is that I had to update the firmware of the Airport Express in order to get it to work. It was a change in the AirTunes part of the Airport Express.
You don't need to do anything with the Airport Extreme card. In fact you can use it over ethernet and not wireless. That's how we have it set up at work.
I can remember the firmware version required was released over a year ago. I have no idea if there is any information about it. Anyway, just update it to the latest.
