Unknown or illegal alias
When trying to send an e-mail to my @me.com i get this error: unknown or illegal alias. I never get the mail on my @me.com address. Is it because of _ in the accountname?
I'm getting the same error! I'm quite frustrated that there's no where to actually report this issue.

What is "unknown or illegal alias"
Mail to my iMac account comes back stating that it was returned because of an unknown or illegal alias. What do I do to change that? There is no other accounts. I'm the only one, and my computer/software was purchased legitimately.
Obviously, this means you sent mail to a non existing address. Make sure you did not misspell the recipients address.

Best regardsDid you add a new client type ?
If you added a new client type the providers for that client type should be defined in the
Client Specific Available Providers list. You can get there by clicking on your Domain Name/ expand desktop and then show advanced options.

Why do I get a an unknown or illegal alias message...
when forwarding to my @icloud.com email account?
Solved it. I had to reduce Thunderbird's security. Thanks, christ1.

ER: ADF Faces Skins: "Unknown pseudo class:alias"
Hi,
I'm trying to create an ADF Faces Skin, by overriding aliases in my own CSS file.
The code editor, however, is hilighting the word "alias" every time I use it (as in ".AFDarkBackground:alias") in red, and the error "Unknown pseudo class:alias" appears both on a popup and in the Structure Pane under "CSS Errors." Is Can I ignore this, or am I doing something wrong? Do I need to import some base CSS that defines the pseudo class? The sample from the HowTo doesn't seem to, but then it shows up with the same CSS Errors.
Best,
Avrom

Changed topic title to reflect request for enhancement farther down. Thanks!
I think I'll edit the title of this to contain ER: ... it would be very nice if it were possible to turn off this bit of validation. I can imagine varying degrees of "smartness" for such a feature--from a manual "accept simple desktop pseudoclasses" option to automatically checking to see if the CSS is listed in an adf-faces-skins.xml file or is imported by any CSS files that are. -
SL mail (status=bounced (User unknown in virtual alias table))
Hello
I have setup mail with 6 locally hosted virtual domains. I created shortnames on workgroup manager with the complete address for the user. After some good results i start getting "status=bounced (User unknown in virtual alias table)". Also the shortname (with the domain name) created for the first virtual host name becomes grey ( like the default )
If i only setup one virtual domain everything works great, but with more than one it starts sending this message in the smtp log.
i dont know if this got something to do with the fact that my host name is mail.example.com and my domain name is example.com.
Hope someone can help meI'm have the exactly this issue on a new SL server mac-mini. Someone help!

Still about domain alias and domain migration
Our company is under a domain name transition. Currently, our domain is lab.D.com, and we are moving to aaa.com.During the transition, we wish both domains could work for us for a long time.
I added a domain alias aaa.com for our domain lab.D.com, the ldif shows:
dn: dc=aaa, dc=com, o=internet
objectclass: alias
objectclass: inetDomainAlias
aliasedObjectName: dc=lab, dc=D, dc=com, o=internet
dc: aaa
after restarting msg server, I can send email to [email protected] which is acutually [email protected]
However, this is only half-way to my goal. I wish our emails at receivers' mailboxes were [email protected], not [email protected], if we send emails though loging in web mail typing [email protected] in the user ID box, or by creating [email protected] accounts in MS Outlook.
===> Is there any way to do it?
===> can [email protected] account be created in MS Outlook?
In another post about domain migration, you suggested:
If you want to stop using the old domain, and make the new domain your "default domain", that's a little harder. It involves several steps:
1. changing all the mail addresses.
2. changing the "default domain" settings everywhere.
===> I wonder, how to do it? is there any command? ldapmodify?
as an alternative approach, if we decide to change our email addresses to [email protected] first,
===> will emails sending to either [email protected] or [email protected] arrive at users who are still in the lab.D.com, if I only change all the mail addresses' domian part to aaa.com since I have added domain alias aaa.com?
and, I do not think sending emails from [email protected] to the internet would be a problem, right???
The iMS we use is iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 (built Feb 21 2002), Directory Server is 4.16 which are very old versions :(
Thanks.I make no claim to be a programmer, nor am I expert
with ldap commands.
I know of no easy way to change all, other than
export to ldif, and use a global change with a text
editor, and then re-import.So, db2ldif -> change in text editor -> ldif2db, right?
Another question here is about Direct LDAP.
I enabled Direct LDAP.
aaa.com is the domain alias to lab.oldD.com (our old domain).
I also have changed user alas' email addresss from alas@ lab.oldD.com to [email protected] and added mailAlternateaddress for alas as [email protected], as you instructed in previous posts.
However, whenever I click "send" either to aaa.com or lab.oldD.com, it shows errors, for examples, - "Returning unknown or illegal alias: [email protected]", "Returning unknown or illegal alias: [email protected]"
The log shows:
19:17:27.62: mmc_address_to_tree: Parsing address.

ICloud Mail: Alias cannot be saved
When I logged in on iCloud.com (also on my iPod Touch) my mail aliases have been disappeared! And that happens now that I wanted to switch to iCloud as mail service. Then I tried to create a new one, doesn't matter what I fill in, what label color I choose or what description I give, It just doesn't let me create an alias, the message I get is, and I try to quote: 'Your alias cannot be saved!'. That's it! I wish I could create an alias because I use my alias as, some kind, of my primary address.
I tried it in the web app, as well as in my iPod Touch, they've just vanished, gone.
To be clear: I am no mobileme user, nor have my account been transferred (mobileme -> iCloud).
Can anybody help me or does anybody has the same problem? Please let me know in this discussion topic so we can collect all these issues. The .me alias i replaced now with the @icloud.com.
So al the .me adressess i had (and did not use) are now @icloud.com
But if i e-mail to my e-mail adres (or alias) @icloud.com the message is rejected.
Seems that there is some development, i'll wait a little longer. The error now is:
Reason: Remote SMTP server has rejected address
Diagnostic code: smtp;550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: *****@icloud.com
Remote system: dns;p01-asmtpout.me.com (TCP|17.172.204.247|41851|17.172.193.192|25)

My iCloud alias can send mail but not receive.
My WoW accout was locked, and when I attempted to unlock it, I found my mail account was not working as always.
Then I tested the alias, I got the information below:
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
***********@me.com
Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias:***********@me.com (state 13).

This issue is very urgent, please help.Oh, yeah. It only took two hours for the Support people to decide that. I'd already come to that conclusion several weeks ago. Being an ex-IT guy, I was reasonably confidant (probably without cause) that I could likely handle it if it were something on my end. But you have to let them go through their spiel.
I was hoping that someone else had had the problem and could shed some light on the cause. -

And when I login to iCloud online, and look at my aliases, it is listed there (two version, one @me and one @mac). But, if I try to send an email to it, I'm told it doesn't exist. Because the actual email that I had been using for the past 7 years or so was the @mac, I'd rather not delete and create it again, since then it will only be @me, and I will have to track down everything that is using the @mac address. I might have to do that anyway, but if I don't have to, that would be great.

When I try to create an iCloud email alias, I get an "This alias is not available" error message. But, if I send an email to the iCloud email alias I'm trying to create, it bounces:
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
[email protected]
Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain icloud.com by mx3.mail.icloud.com. [17.158.8.61].
The error that the other server returned was:
550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: [email protected]
What gives?Hello,
could be that someone already created this alias, but deactivated it temporarily or even deleted it again.
Best regards,
David -
HT4897 My Icloud Alias Wont work, It shows that its active but i cant receive emails?
Ive had this alias for a while and its tied up to accounts, but i cant recive any email. It does not show as disabled .What do i do?
Having similar problem. Account predates 2008. Now one alias is not working and receive error code smtp;550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias. Have checked and double checked alias name when sending and it is correct.
Looking in the "references/rules" tool the alias appears to be active. Other aliases working. Only thing that has changed is recent purchase of iphone 5s. Checked setting on the iphone and the aliases are on and appear to be active.
Could delete all my aliases, but enjoy having the 5 associated with my old account, and would be limited to 3 if I eliminate them and restart.
Any solutions/thoughts? -
Hi Jay and all,
we are running Sun Java messaging 2004Q4 on solaris 9.
We want to create a domain alias so that our server can receive mails on different domain also.
Let's say we have already x.com and want y.com to be domain alias for it. So i ran this below script and it was successful
++++++
echo dn: o=x.com,dc=x,dc=com >>/sbin/ldap99.txt
echo changetype: modify >>/sbin/ldap99.txt
echo add: associatedDomain >>/sbin/ldap99.txt
echo associatedDomain: y.com >>/sbin/ldap99.txt
cd /var/opt/mps/serverroot/shared/bin
./ldapmodify -D uid=admin,ou=people,o=x.com,dc=x,dc=com -w <admin-pass> -R -f /sbin/ldap99.txt
++++++++++++++
Now i suppose y.com has become an alias to x.com so that i can receive mails destined to [email protected] also and get them forwarded to the [email protected] mailbox (No need for user level aliasing again)
But when i say "telnet <mail-server> 25" and rcpt to:[email protected], it says "550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: [email protected]".
it means that the vanity domain created successfully but not able to identify users already created on x.com (it did not throw the error - 550 5.7.1 Relaying not allowed: [email protected])
Please advise me.
TIA
PrvnHi,
Now i suppose y.com has become an alias to x.com so
that i can receive mails destined to [email protected] also
and get them forwarded to the [email protected] mailbox (No
need for user level aliasing again)You still need to add the user-level address attribute e.g.
mailalternateaddress: [email protected]
Just adding the associatedDomain attribute doesn't automatically result in emails sent to [email protected] being delivered to the mailbox of [email protected]
But when i say "telnet <mail-server> 25" and rcpt
to:[email protected], it says "550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal
alias: [email protected]".
Try adding the mailalternateaddress: [email protected] to the [email protected] account.

After migrating to iCloud the alias email address not receiving email.
Hope someone can help
After migrating to iCloud the alias email address my wife has been using now no longer accepts email. The alias can send but extremly slow. However if you reply to the email or attempt to send and email to the alias address it comes up saying " The recipient "****@me.com" was rejected by the server because the user is unknown.
I have recently added another alias and it works fine. I have even deleted and recreated the orignal alias but no success...
Can anyone help.....? A happy Wife means Happy Life....
Regards
TroyThis is now the rejection note that I recive when attmepting to send to the email address
Final-Recipient: RFC822; <[email protected]>
Action: failed
Status: 5.1.1
Remote-MTA: dns; mx.me.com.akadns.net (17.148.17.54)
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: [email protected]
