"Unknown" User Showing in Get Info Box

This is strange - at the bottom of any Get Info screen I am seeing three listings in this order:
1 - administrator (my account) with Read/Write privileges
2 - (unknown) - Read Only
3 - everyone - Read Only
When I try to delete unknown, nothing happens
Any thoughts?

The first time I installed leopard I lost the root account and it lowered my priviledges on my admin account to user.
That was only the beginning of sorrows and I finally restored Tiger again.
Second attempt - same result almost.
Back to tiger - Grrrrr.....
On the next attempt I did the usual (disk and permission repair) before install, but this time I forced Leopard to boot into safe mode immediately following the install from the DVD.
Eureka! Every setting from Tiger was perfectly preserved, except for one: my windows workgroup name. I finally cured that by deleting the ethernet -1 entry in system preferences > network and then recreating it.
The Remote management 3.2.1 upgrade caused me numerous program and stability problems as well. I finally removed it and altogether and leopard performed much better. I later reinstalled the original remote management client 3.2 from the leopard disk and leopard finally tamed down and went to work.
It has that "good time feeling" now and my million and one settings from tiger are all perfectly preserved.

  • Unknown user appears in get info permissions list

unknown user appears in get info permissions list of a lot of folders. I cant remove the user, change the permission level of that user. Is there a way of getting over this problem?
Here is a screenshot of the unknown user...
    http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee151/cosmac2007/Picture5.png

pzeitler, i tried your fix. it worked but only partly. i had to go to an admin account and do the sudo because my non-admin account that was affected does not allow me to sudo from it. so i do it from admin account and it seems i add my non-admin user to all admin files\folders with full permissions and no admin account user. so i open the home folder in get info, add admin user and set permission, apply recursively to all inside it. How ever, i couldnt remove the non-admin user from admin user folder permissions.
now i go to non-admin user account and find that unknown grp is gone for all except three folders (public/sites/downloads). i also checked a third, non-admin user and it seems unaffected by all the operations that i have performed. but it has the unknown grp in it.
I guess i have to wait for apple to fix it rather than mess up the system myself.

I've cleared almost 30 gig off of my hard drive in the past 2 weeks, and it will temporarily show that in the Get Info box.  But hours later, I am still getting a disk full error and all of the memory has disappeared.  I have cleared my backup logs from Time Machine, checked the mail folder, cleaned out tons of photos and videos and it still keeps filling back up.

Any ideas on what to do next?
    I'm running and iMac 20-inch  early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    Step 1
Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Get info box

itunes won't let me alter info in 'get info' box or insert artwork, any ideas?

I have downloaded a piece of software (Scorch) that requires me to open Firefox (I'm running 7.0.1) in 32-bit mode. The Get Info box on my Firefox does not have this option. My computer is a MacBook running OSX 10.5.8.
There is some time urgency on this! What can I do?

usually is a check box over the locked box:

  • Keyboard shortcuts and tabs with get info box

I'm having several problems with the new get info box - and regret that I can no longer bring up the old version with the shift/right-click/get-info command.
    1) No keyboard shortcut to advance from one track to the next, from inside the Get Info box. This used to be handled with Alt-N or Alt-P for Next and Previous. Now it seems to require mouse click on the error.
    2) When tabbing through fields, it skips fields toward the bottom (album artist)
    3) For works with the same title (most of my library is classical), I've tended to organize them by adding an extra space at the end of the Album line for the 2nd work with that title, or an extra two spaces for the 3rd work with that same title. This way they sort as distinct albums, since most works have multiple tracks. With the new Get Info, if I enter that extra space on the field in the box, it cuts it off when clicking ok. But if I just F2 the field on itunes list view, I can add it with no problem. This is a pain because I have to do it one track at a time, can't do it for multiple tracks at once.

The functions printed in small letters on those keys are accessed by the fn key.
The following work on my MBP (albeit using Word 2008, but IIRC the same shortcuts worked in Word 2004):
Jump to start of document = Command-Fn-LeftArrow (aka Command-Home)
Jump to end of document = Command-Fn-RightArrow (aka Command-End)
    Likewise,
Jump to start of line = Fn-LeftArrow
Jump to end of line = Fn-RightArrow
    Page Up = Fn-UpArrow
    Page Down = Fn-DownArrow
In this one (exceedingly rare) instance, Niel is incorrect.

  • Image Icon not showing in "get info" for OS 10.9.4

I  now have PS CC 2014 and the image icons are showing the "generic" .jpg and .psd files in the "get info" finder window, but on my desktop the images are showing their
         proper image icon.
I was previously using PS CS 5 and the icons are showing up in the "get info" window, but with PS CC 2014 these icons are showing up as generic.
To be clear the images I saved using PS CS 5 are showing the icons vs. the images I saved in CC 2014 where the icons are not showing in the "get info" window.
I've compared preference settings with PS 2014 and PS 5 but their basically about the same.
I'm including 2 images so you can see what I'm explaining. IMG_1627 is a PS CC2014 created image and Arturo is a PS 5 image.
I did read about other PS users having similar issues but it looked to be unresolved.
You may think what's the big deal, but I use these image icons to label my folders. A "trick" I've doing for over decade which helps keep my folders visually on track for me.
Is anyone out there able to solve this issue??

I do on occasion get jpgs and pngs that won't render a thumbnail or preview in MacOS.  I have 10.9.5
I don't have this problem, although I just have CC and CC 2014 on my Macbook.
I would open those up in Preview.app and try a Save As... and I would get the thumbnail and thumbnail preview back.
Not really the best idea, but you can see if it helps.
These  are my file saving options, perhaps there is something there you can try.

  • Strange (foreign) users list in get info/permissions window!

Background info: OS up dated to 10.7.4.   I am the admin.  Husband is standard user. One group, which includes my husband and I.  One guest (no sharing) account created.  I can connect remotely to my mac with admin login info.
    1. When, applying read and write permissions to HD for the "owners" group  (which i created)
"The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/Accusys6xxxx.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
    and
"The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/acfs.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update."
    2. I created a shared folder (users/me/public/shared)for my husband and I to have dual read and write access. I made this folder last year.  Tonight i clicked "get info" and a user named "wheel" had read and write access.  I did not create this user.  Also "_guest" and "guest"  were listed under names in permissions.  They had read only access. Additionally, here is a "staff" user and "everyone" users(are they default users).  Can I delete all users but admin (me, my husband and our group? "
    3. Several times over the last few months, I was concerned about unsual OS performance.  I used the disk ustitlty to repair permissions. I see the following often in my repair log.  What is "LockScreenLeopard.app"  and what does "drw-r--r--" mean?
    Permissions differ on “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/LockScreenLeopard386.app/Contents/Resources/da.lproj/MainMenu.nib”; should be -rw-r--r-- ; they are drw-r--r-- .
    Repaired “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/AppleVNCServer.bundle/Contents/Su pport/LockScreenLeopard386.app/Contents/Resources/da.lproj/MainMenu.nib”
Do I have a hacker?  Do you all use antivurus/spyware software these days?  If so what app?

pzeitler, i tried your fix. it worked but only partly. i had to go to an admin account and do the sudo because my non-admin account that was affected does not allow me to sudo from it. so i do it from admin account and it seems i add my non-admin user to all admin files\folders with full permissions and no admin account user. so i open the home folder in get info, add admin user and set permission, apply recursively to all inside it. <description>Few other questions in American history have generated more controversy than "What Caused the Civil War?" That conflict preserved the United States as one nation, indivisible and abolished the institution of slavery that for more than four score years had made a mockery of American claims to stand as a republic of liberty, a beacon of freedom for oppressed peoples in the Old Word. But these achievements came at the great cost of more than 629,000 lives and vast destruction of property that left large parts of the South a wasteland. Could this terrible war have been avoided? Who was responsible for the events that led to war? Could the positive results of the war (Union and Freedom) have been achieved without war? How have participants in the war and historians answered these questions over the five generations since the war ended? James M. • There is an "unknown" user in my folder info windows

Who is this mysterious "unknown" user? I can never change his (or her) Privileges. The icon, currently grayed out, is of a user behind a timepiece, a Lépine by the looks of it.
How can I get rid of him (or her) without actually defenestrating my laptop?

This means that the Group ownership field has a Group ID that is not contained in /etc/group, so the Finder just substitutes 'unknown'.
There are 4 billion possible Group ID numbers, but only a handful are ever used.  Somehow you have stored a file on your system that is using a Group ID that does not contain a name in /etc/group
For example, if you received a ZIP file (or any other container file) and unpacked it, it is possible that the Group ID from another system was used when creating the file on your Mac.
You can use Applicaitons -> Utilities -> Terminal to change the group owner
    sudo chgrp staff "/path/to/the/file.name"
Or you can just ignore this, as it is most likely harmless

  • TV Shows in Get Info Video tab missing!

I downloaded the new iTunes 8.0.0.35 today cause I had to update my iPhone firmware and when I did I lost the Tv Shows option under the Video tab in the Get Info pane. What do I do to move my videos into the TV Shows catagory of my library?

It's on the Option tab now, under Media Type.

  • ITunes 11 Get Info box lost "Next" & "Previous" buttons.

Without reverting to the previous version — how would I do that? — can I get back these features which were integral to my mode of editing track information?

While this does solved this problem, I do not understand dat Apple is blind to this issue. This is really not user friendly behaviour and not well thought through by the Apple designer(s).

  • Checking/unchecking a box in "get info" with Applescript

I've never used Applescript or automator but I think one of them could help me. I need to run Photoshop CS3 normally most of the time but when I have to scan I have to run it in Rosetta. To do this I get the "get info" box up for CS3 and check or uncheck the "open using rosetta" checkbox. The problem is I have to plough throgh several folders to get to the CS3 application and I was hoping I could get applescript or automator to do this with one click. Can anyone tell me what I would have to type into Applescript or how I would automate this?
    Thanks for any help.

    Replace ...
    HD1_160:Applications:Safari.app

tell application "Finder" to set current panel of (open information window of file ("HD1_160:Applications:Safari.app")) to General Information panel
... with the full path to CS3.
You can save the code (via 'Script Editor's 'File, Save' menu item) ...

    02. As a script (in the current users '$HOME/Library/Scripts/' folder; or, elsewhere, with an alias of it - in the '$HOME/Library/Scripts/' folder); and, access it (the script) via the 'Script Menu' (which is added to the menu bar via 'AppleScript Utility.app' in the '/Applications/AppleScript/' folder).
