"Unknowns" in the Finder SHARED folder

With the install of Leopard the Finder Sidebar displays SHARED items or sources.
I am not part of a Network and have never used SHARE features so I am ignorant about the abilities and terminology - sorry.
My issue is that unknown identities are appearing under under the SHARED heading of the sidebar. Does this mean I am 'connected' to someone or something?
Currently there are 2 computer icons, one named 'dimension', another named 'your-727a0a....'
Can anyone shed light on what this all means?

As a test, try turning off all wireless network services on your Mac. One way to do this is to create a new "Location" in Network preferences & remove every service in the left pane except Built-in Ethernet by using the "-" (minus symbol) button below the list.
Make this Location the active one & see if the "Shared" items disappear. If so, they are being detected by your Mac's wireless network capabilities. This doesn't mean they are connected, only that the Mac is aware of them.
Alternately, command click on the icon of the item in the Shared section of the sidebar (not on its name) & from the popup menu select "Get Info." What does it say?

  • All my photos have been imported to iPhoto library. Is it safe therefore to delete all photos in the Finder pictures folder? It seems crazy to have them duplicated (all are backed up externally). And are they full size images in iPhoto?

All my photos have been imported to iPhoto library. Is it safe therefore to delete all photos in the finder picture folder? It seems crazy to have them dupllcated ( all are backed up anyway). And are they the full sized images stored in iPhoto?

Assuming you have iPhoto set to the Default setting, then yes, your full sized photos are copied into the iPhoto Library and so you can delete your own stored in the Finder.
Easiest way to check:  Select a photo in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window should open with the file selected. Is it stored within the iPhoto Library? You can tell easily in the Finder's column view.
    As an FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Finder "Shared Folder" Flag

What does the "Shared Folder" black bar across the top of a Finder window actually indicate? I am seeing it on a home folder that I'm sharing for this particular user via afp with Automount -> User home folders selected, however I fear that perhaps I'm somehow opening this up to access from other users?
I have disabled guest access, but I still see this flag in Finder. I have also stripped perms down to just the owner having rw and the staff ro and o none.
Any further detail on this would be appreciated!

+What does the "Shared Folder" black bar across the top of a Finder window actually indicate?+
That badge and the check in the Info window simply indicate that the folder is a share point for one or more file services. It says nothing about whether or not guest access is enabled for one or more of the services, or even for the share point itself.

  • Sharing the /Users/Shared folder

My wife is using a Macbook Air (10.5.4) and would like to access photos stored on our iMac G4 (10.4.11).
She can connect to the G4 using cmd-K but the only volumes in /User that show up are those of the four family members, the /User/Shared volume is not visible and this is where the photos are; from the G4 of course all users have access. I checked the permissions on the folder and it looks correct...rwx for all.
Also, in her own volume on the G4 she cannot open the system standard folders (Movies, Desktop, Library, etc.) from the Air but she can open any folders and docs she created.
I tried Mac Help but didn't find anything useful.

As BDAqua reported, you'll need SharePoints to add the iMac G4 Tiger Shared folder as a mount point.
When attempting to access her own volume on the iMac G4 Tiger from the MacBook Air running Leopard, is she attempting to connect as a guest user or as a registered user? If just clicking on the iMac icon in a Finder window's sidebar, it might be trying to allow login as a guest, not a registered user. Try connecting from Finder's menubar > Go > Connect to server (then enter afp://{networkname_of_imacG4}) or Go > Network (and doubleclick on iMac icon) and when prompted to save password to keychain, do so ‑‑ if no login password (to her account on the iMac) has been previously saved in her Keychain (on the MBA), it would restrict her to logging in as a guest.

  • Unknown item in Finder:Shared

When I open Finder and look under "Shared", I see two items: my Time Capsule and something called "3e280e000000".
Any idea what this is? Or how I can figure it out?

Thanks - I thought of that and turned off the printer, but the device stayed in the Finder under Shared.
But just now  I shut down and re-started the computer with the printer powered down, and it disappeared from Finder:Shared.
    Mystery solved.

  • Can't find shared folder and files on TC, and internet don't work through it.

    Hi all,
I use iOS 10.9.5 and TC 802.11AC 2TB. I have used it for both Time Machine and as a shared HD for about a year without problems. Now all the sudden the folder with shared files has disappeared. It's still seems to work with TM. It shows up in network and I can see the "data" folder but not the one I have created. I also used to route internet through the TC but this function has also ceased to work. I've tried everything, reebooting, visiting every forum and tried to fix this in a number of ways but now I have no clue what to do...
    Please help
PS. No one else hace accessed the TC. I have not deleted any files either.

Unfortunately, you are basically telling us that you have already "tried everything", but we really have no idea what you might have done......and we don't want to waste your time asking you to do the things that you have already done.
Can you tell us what troubleshooting steps that you have already performed?
If you do not want to go through that process again, my suggestion would be to reset the Time Capsule back to factory default settings and then set it up again and get it working with an Internet connection.
Then, erase the Time Capsule drive and start over again with new Time Machine backups.....and......restore the shared files to the Time Capsule disk from your backup.

  • Question about the shared folder when backing up audio

Hello, kind Mac folk. I've read a lot about using Itunes to backup Itunes libraries onto multiple CD-R's and it seems that, right now, this is the best option for me. However, I've also read that it's a good idea to also backup the "users/shared" folder from the HD because it contains some invisible information regarding the authentication of music that I purchased using my .Mac/Itunes account. So is it possible to burn this folder in the same burning project I'll use accross the CD-R's on which my tunes will go? Or do I need to place this folder in a burn folder and back it up that way? And, if the latter is the only way possible, will it matter that the information is on a separate disc if I ever need to restore or upgrade my hardware? Thanks so much for your help and advice.
    Austin

If you create your backup CD-Rs from within iTunes, it's not possible to include the Shared folder.
You have to burn that folder as a separate project.
The size of the folder can be fairly large (mine is about 1.9 GB) depending on the applications and specific use of your computer.
If your only goal is to save the authorization info in case of a HD crash or other failure, it won't help. After repair of a logic board or changing RAM, you will be asked to authorize again anyway.
Take a look at this article
The authorization info is stored in the 'SC Info.sidb' file inside the 'SC Info' folder in Shared.
You can 'unhide' invisible files by tools like Tinkertool or OnyX (you can find them on versiontracker.com)
    Hope this helps.

  • Archiving File on Shared Folder in Linux using java code

    Hi All,
I have a requirement wherein I have to ftp a file (Feed.txt) from windows FTP server to Linux machine1 and archive the same file (with timestamp suffixed on file name like Feed.txt_22April) on Linux Machine2. I am
trying to achieve this through java code. I am able to ftp the file(Feed.txt) from windows ftp server to Linux machine1 /opt/ftproot directory and archiving the same file under /opt/ftproot/archive directory of Linux
Machine1 with timestamp suffixed on file name.
My archiving requirement is still not achieved. So, for that I created a shared folder “/temp/shared” on Linux Machine2 and mounted the /temp/shared folder of Linux Machine2 on /opt/ftproot/archive folder of
    Linux Machine1 using following command:
    # mount LinuxMachine2: /temp/shared /opt/ftproot/archive
Note: I have given full permission on both the folders.
Logically, archiving the Feed.txt with timestamp in it name under /opt/ftproot/archive folder should create the file in /temp/shared folder of Linux Machine2. But instead of archiving the file on
/opt/ftproot/archive folder, it archive the file on /opt/ftproot folder.
In my java code, I have specified copyDir as “/opt/ftproot” and archiveDir as /opt/ftproot/archive”.
The code is being run from Linux Machine1 as a schedule task.

    - You are connecting to a ftp server. I am guessing you didn't write that.
    - Get a flexible ftp client, there are many but make sure it shows you the ftp result codes.
    - Figure out how and if the ftp server will do what you want.
If it does do what you want then ftp client will let you do the same thing.
If that ftp server doesn't allow you to do it then you must do one of the following
    - Find a different server
    - Change the requirements
    - Find a way to impose the requirements using a tool in addition to ftp like some command executed through telnet.

  • How can I get Spotlight to search my Users/Shared folder?

How can I get Spotlight to search my Users/Shared folder?  It searches the folders in the other users, but not Shared.  When I CMD-I the Shared folder, my group has read-write privileges (all groups have at least read-only privileges).  When I do the search in the Finder window (with the Shared folder highlighted), It gives me the options of This Mac and "Shared".  When I click on "Shared," it does not give me any results.  I keep documents, photos, iTunes data, etc, in this Shared folder, and would like to be able to use Spotlight on it.

I appreciate the 108 "views," but there weren't any replies, so I took another shot at figuring it out.  I did a CMD-I on the Shared folder, and made the "everyone" group have read-write access, and it worked!  I'm not sure if its because now all groups have read-write access, or just because the "everyone" group does, but I don't care at this point.    I'll have to restrict a few folders within in there, but at least it searches the main Shared folder itself now.

  • How can I get Thunderbird to search the Junk Mail folder as it does any other folder?

Just noticed that Thunderbird's global search seems to omit the Junk folder. I assume this must be a problem with my configuration. Junk filters are not perfect and inevitably some "good" email ends up in the Junk folder at least temporarily. Therefore if I am searching all my email for something, I need that search to include the Junk folder. But I can't find the setting that would make this possible. Help, anyone?
