Unkown Device Showing up on Firewire Bus when nothing is connected

I have a brand new G5 dual 2.3 Ghz PowerPC not INTEL pci-e and when I go to the System Profiler and look under the Firewire Bus page it's indicating that I have an Unknown Device connected when in fact I don't have anyting externally connected. I do have two Digidesign PCI-E Audio cards installed but I can't see how this would be considered a firewire device. Anyone else have this problem or ideas on this? Thanks!

Glad to be of service.

    Hello there, sarhang27753.
First thing that would come to mind to resolve the issue would be SMC and PRAM resets. I've linked Knowledge Base articles below:

  • Airport Express 2nd WAN Port light always on, even when nothing is connected.

My Airport Express 2nd WAN Port light always on, even when nothing is connected.
Is this normal? The Airport utility also said that I didn't connect anything to the port - when there is a lan cable connected from the main Airport Extreme.
The computer can connect to the WiFi from the Airport Express properly, but with blinking yellow and no internet connection, also it cannot obtain the ip address.
After setting the Airport Express to the Bridge mode, the computer cannot access to the Airport Express anymore, with "Connection Time Out" error.
The Airport Express was 3 days old, and was working properly until today. There is also one blackout today because of the storm.
Had reset the Airport several times, didn't solve the problem.

Hi again. That is a good idea. Check if router can grab an ip from your modem since wireless local connection through the router is working. If it can grab an ip and works fine on wireless, then you might have a problem with the ethernet ports. You might want to try assigning an ip address on the wired connection and see if ip of router is pingable. If really not working at all, possibility that router is not working properly anymore.

  • Aggregate device on the same firewire bus (fireface 800 and Lightbridge

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up a aggregate device with my old RME Fireface 800 (on the firewire 400 bus) and this new M-Audio Lightbridge. But allthough I manage to create the device, there is no sound at all. The Fireface acts as digital master via a word clock cable. The Fireface are connected via a 10 m. cable to the rear connection (on my nes Mac Pro) and the Lightbridge are connected to the front. I know it's the same bus using those two connectors, so do you think a separate firewire board would be a solution?
    Regards Stig

So the firewire "bus" and a firewire "interface" are the same thing then? Excuse my ignorance, I've just been put in the position that I needed to know this for the first time with this audio interface problem. The things I used my firewire ports for just worked without me having to learn much about it up until now. Also, I found some posts that the card had some issues functioning in a version of Leopard. I'm about to upgrade from Tiger (finally) directly to Snow Leopard. Do you (or anyone else who sees this) happen to know if there are any issues there? I appreciate the help very much Rod.

  • USB Problems when nothing is connected

I am running a Macbook Pro (mid 2009) with 2.26 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor and 4 GB of memory.  I am currently having issues with my mac always displaying a message of "because a usb device was drawing too much power, it is disabled."
I only hook up usb drives, a bluetooth usb adapter for my mouse, my Sprint HTC Evo 4G phone, and my Ipod Touch.
I have never seen this message unless I left my phone on and did not have the computer plugged in and it would give this message towards the end of the battery life.
Now I am seeing it all the time, and nothing has been plugged into the usb port for a good 2 weeks.  I have tried putting it to sleep, restarting it, shutting the whole computer down and power it back up, and I did a SMC reset.  It still is displaying the message.
    Ideas?
    Thanks!

OGELTHORPE:  The battery condition is normal.
eww:  I tried that.  That is the first thing I tried.
I am wondering if it has something to do in the bios.  I am not sure if SMC is the bios equivalent or not, but I feel like it is there.  With nothing plugged in, it still gives me this issue

  • New Quad G5 - 'unknown device' on Firewire Bus

Even when nothing is connected to the Firewire ports, and after rebooting, System Profiler shows an 'unknown device' on the Firewire Bus. The Firewire bus works correctly, I've used it with hard drives and a Focusrite Saffire audio interface. The unknown device is always in the list.
Other Quad users seeing the same thing?

same thing for me, I think it's not something wrong.

  • Itunes displays two playlists when nano is connected?

My sons 8 gig nano refuses to sync up and download some albums, video downloads and album art.
A message says there are two accounts in itunes which I guess is related to the title of this thread, two separate lists of playlists show in the source column when he's connected. One list is directly under the "device" and has no heading saying "playlists" The other list looks normal.
After exploring several menu options I'm trying to help but increasingly confused at how his itunes seems to be corrupted.....or is it.

The playlist listed under "DEVICES" is referring to content on the iPod. If you have content in iTunes that is not syncing to the iPod, take a look at your sync preferences. Click on the iPod's name directly beneath DEVICES in the source pane. This should take you to the iPod Summary page. Which options are selected?

  • Console Error When Trying to Connect to Task Server

I'm trying to set up an Apple Remote Desktop task server on our Xserve G5. I've successfully installed Apple Remote Desktop 3, but I'm having some weird problems with it.
One thing that should be noted is that we don't have a monitor for our Xserve. Everything is done via Apple Remote Desktop. So I have to install Remote Desktop on the Xserve via Remote Desktop. (I don't know if this makes a difference, but I do know that Remote Desktop doesn't allow you to control a computer that is currently running Remote Desktop, so maybe this is part of the problem.)
After installing Remote Desktop on the Xserve, I launched it, and when trying to control the application, it's very unresponsive. Clicking and holding on the icon in the Dock almost always says "Application not responding", and I can barely click on anything at all. I created an AppleScript that turned on the Remote Desktop task server, hoping that I wouldn't need to touch the Remote Desktop app on the Xserve anymore.
The problem now, though, is that when I try to connect to the task server from another administration computer (by going to Remote Desktop preferences, "Task Server" tab, choosing "Use remote Task Server", entering the IP address of the Xserver, and then clicking select), it immediately reverts back to using the task server on the local computer.
This also shows up in the console when trying to connect to the remote task server:
MacBook-001959 /Applications/Remote Desktop.app/Contents/MacOS/Remote Desktop: setCollectionAtComputer: Got unexpected error (-6410) setting Admin entry in DOC.
Has anyone had this problem before?

Well, in fairness to Apple, the ARD license does say that each copy can only be installed on a single system. But I do agree that it would be nice if a more explicit "this serial number is in use on another system" message appeared (since it may not be known in some organizations that someone installed ARD elsewhere). You can suggest that to Apple through the feedback page.

  • Firewire Bus/Unknown Device?

Hello to all. I just picked up a New 2.3GHz Power Mac and when I was checking the System Profiler in the Firewire section it reads Firewire Bus
    Unknown Device
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
The funny thing is I have nothing plugged into any of the Firewire Ports! The other strange thing is I have a 20 inch Cinema Display (which has a USB and Firewire Hub built into the back of the display) and If I plug that Firewire plug into the Computer I get a Duplicate reading of the info above (looks like this):
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
I called Apple and They had me run every test under the sun. As a last resort They had me erase the Drive and do a reinstall of just the basic Apple Software and this is what I ended up with. I thought maybe one of you kind folks might have some idea of what the **** is going on.
    Thanks

    Dual-Core 2.3GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM

Thanks so much for your replies. So what is the technical explaination for this because I have been on the phone with Apple for hours over the last 2 days send them all sorts of system data. I even mentioned the fact that I have seen postings listed on this forum with other people with the same Unkown Error issue happening to there Dual Core machines and the people I have spoken with at Apple are acting like the have never heard of this before. I only noticed this Unknown Device thing because I am in the Audio Recording business and I am having a problem with my Digidesign DIGI002 interface giving me this slight distortion problem coming out of the 002 unit. But this was happening when I had the 002 connected to my Powerbook 17inch 1.33. I figured it was some type of software issue but now I'm checking into the 002 as the culprit! And the people down at Digidesign have never heard about this Unknown Device Issue as well and think that could be messing up the 002 but I do not have this Unknown Device thing going on with my Powerbook. So I'm stumped!
    Thanks again!

  • Firewire & bus powered devices - Phonic FireFly 302 Plus

    Hello Appleheads,
Looking for some help if you have a spare moment.
I just purchased a Phonic Firefly 302 Plus audio interface, and even though it is supposed to be able to be powered by the firewire bus, I am unable to get it to work. The unit's power light does not come on at all, however when using the external power supply that is also supplied it does work. I have tested two firewire cables, 1 of which I know works.
Are there any tricks to get this to work? Can you change power output settings for firewire ports somewhere in the system?
I am using a 6 circuit firewire 400 cable that came with the device. This is the only firewire device connected to my computer. The computer is connected to a power supply. Running OSX 10.6.4.
    My Macbook Pro...
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.
    Hartz.

The unit works fine with DC power. I am yet to test it on another computer to know for sure.
An interesting point has been raised to me though that has been discussed here: https://www.mhsecure.com/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=3&id=21&artlang=en&hig hlight=bus power
+The MacBook Pro models include protection circuitry to shut down the bus power when a device's inrush current amount violates a threshold. This issue affects the startup transient only, so you can power the MIO from its power supply to boot the box, then connect the FW to the computer, and remove the MIO power supply after it has joined the bus.+
Surely this threshold would be set to the maximum voltage provided on the bus? 12v?
Either way I have decided that I will just use the DC adapter.

  • Firewire devices not showing up - No firewire information in System Profile

    I have 3 external HD's, and an M-Audio Firewire interface connected to my dual 2.5 G5 - 10.4.6.
None of my drives are showing up on my desktop, and my interface is not showing up in my audio settings. In addition, the FIREWIRE secion of the system profiler has no information in it at all... it simply says "FireWire Bus:"
I ran a hardware diagnostic, and everything passed both the quick test and the full test.
I have tried numerous firewire cables, and all of my ports (FW 400 and 800)
I am very alarmed by this, I have zapped PRAM and repaired all permissions in Disk Utility.
please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance,
    john

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work! (some you have tried!)
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.6 Combo update ( PPC, not for Intel systems). Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work
    Cheers!
