Unkown error copying from external USB HDD
I copied all my files from Windows Pc to external USB HDD (FAT32). Now I can see the disc and the files on my new iMac, but I can not copy them.
Error -8062 unknown error comes up. What can I do? Same problem exists when copying from TimeCapsule drive.
Hi,
The main reason for the appearance of this error message is incorrect permission settings of files and folders, or locked files, occasionally it can be caused by too full of Hard Drive.
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Also try repairing the external drive.

Boot from external USB HDD - Tecra M5
Hi!
Does anyone know is it possible to boot OS from external HDD connected to notebook via USB-port? There is "HDD priority" in BIOS setup with an ability to choose: USB - Built-in - Second HDD. But it doesn't work :(
I tried to boot Windows 98 from the same external USB-HDD on my home computer. Everything is OK...
The version of my Tecra M5 BIOS is 3.20.
TIAHi
You can boot from the second HDD if this HDD was placed in the SelectBay but not if the HDD was connected to the USB port.
Only this devices are bootable:
USB FDD, Primary HDD, SelectBay devices, Network(LAN), SD-CARD -
A40: Booting from external USB HDD
Hi guys.
Who could help me? The problem: I've recently bought USB 2.0 HDD case, the device is working properly and everything is OK, but I can't boot from it.
The model is A40 and USB FDD boot option is available, how could I go around it and make my laptop boot from USB HDD?
Thanks in advance.Hello
There is no problem at all because this possibility is absolutely not possible. There is no way to do this.
Dont compare external FDD and HDD. They are two different external devices.

Failed booting from external usb hdd
Hey Community!
I struggle at backing up my arch linux operation system. I found this instruction but for newbies as me it seems to be a little bit hard to follow:
Full_System_Backup_with_rsync
The backup itself with rsync and the installation of GRUB bootloader seemed to be successful, but if I plug in the external hdd in another PC and boot from it, GRUB fails with ERROR 21.
I think, that my menu.lst is somehow incorrect. What I did:
full rsync to /mnt/usbHDD (mounted from /dev/sdb1)
my external hard disk is partitioned like that:
|| 160 gb ext4, sdb1 | UNUSED rest ||
blkid gives me that:

I don't have a clue what to change, since it is not clearly specified in the wiki...I followed exactly the instructions in the wiki, besides the include and excludes for rsync but that doesnt really matter
Appreciate your help
Last edited by athal (2012-06-25 21:09:16)You should adapt the menu.lst of the backed up OS like this:
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sdb1 ro
initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img
explanation:
- Your root should be (hd1,0) because the external disc is the second hard disc (assuming root=/dev/sdb1 is correct).
- The kernel and initrd line should have /boot, because you don't have a seperate boot partition.
Also, you didn't adapt your fstab of the backed up hard disk. In particular, you have to remove the entries for /boot, /home and swap. The entry of root file system is also wrong, because you still have the old UUID in it:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
/dev/sdb1 / ext4 defaults 0 1
Finally, I think not following the excludes in the wiki will also cause problems. -
Disk error when connecting external USB HDD to AEBS
I just set up my AEBS and have a Seagate Free Agent drive plugged into the USB port on the AEBS.
I can see the disk in the airport utility, but it does not show up in the finder. Also, when first plugged in, I get an error message saying there is a problem with the disk.
The disk works fine. I used it for my Vista machine back-up. It's formatted NTFS, and I also used it to copy files onto my new Mac. When plugged directly into the Mac, it works fine. IdeasIf you connect a HFS+ formatted disk directly to a Windows machine it will not be recognized.
However when the disk is connected to the AEBS it uses standard Windows file sharing to allow Windows clients to access the disk. Therefore the format of the disk doesn't really matter to the Windows client.
How does one decide b/w HFS and FAT32.
The general consensus on this discussion board is that HFS+ formatted disks encounter fewer issues. -
Arch: Install to & run from External USB Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
I wanted to play with ArchLinux 2009.02, but replacing the existing Debian-Lenny on the laptop's HDD wasn't an option. So I experimented with installing Arch on an external USB Hard Disk Drive.
I have tried to make this "newbie-friendly", so I hope the more experienced will forgive the detail.
Materials:
Three year old Dell Inspiron 6000
CPU = 2.0 GHz Pentium
RAM = 2.0 GB
Internal HDD = 80 GB
Internal CD/DVD R/RW
External USB HDD = Freecom FHD-2 Pro 80 GB
Archlinux 2009.02 install CD
Steps to install:
1. I put the Archlinux install CD in the drive and connected the external 80 GB HDD in the USB port.
2. When the Dell laptop was booted, I pressed F2 to enter the BIOS setup. I edited the boot sequence to the following:
Internal CD/DVD
External USB device
Internal HDD
On the Dell, you can also press F12 to select the preferred boot device for that boot.
3. I started the laptop and the Archlinux installation menu came up and I proceeded with installation following the "Official Arch Linux Install Guide" and the "Beginners Guide".
4. Used km to change to UK keyboard layout and then began the installer script (/arch/setup). I was installing from the core CD so I skipped the network steps.
5. HDD preparation.
This was fairly straightforward with two cautions:
(a) Make very sure that the external HDD (sdb) is selected for the operations.
(b) Remember to set the Bootable Flag for the first (/) partition on the HDD.
I chose 20 GB for /, 2 GB for swap and the remainder for /home.
6. The package selection and installation was fairly straightforward.
7. Configuration of System
This was section was straightforward with one warning:
USB had to be added to the HOOKS in the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file!
I found this to be essential for my external USB HDD to function as a bootable device. Otherwise I got the same sorts of errors relating to unrecognisable file system types that other people have reported in the forum.
The relevant line from the end of the edited /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file is below:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usb filesystems"
8. Installation of GRUB was the other point where caution and/or correction was necessary.
When it asked where GRUB should be installed, I had to select sdb (my external USB HDD) and not any of the particular partitions on sdb. If the root partition sdb1 was selected then the laptop won't boot from the external USB HDD.
The GRUB /boot/grub/menu.lst as written by the installation routine specifies hd(1,0) which doesn't work when you try to reboot from the external USB HDD. When you boot Arch from the external USB HDD, as far as Arch is concerned - at that point in time - the external USB HDD is the first drive in the system. To fix this:
(a) When the Arch boot menu comes up, press e to edit the grub entries.
(b) Change the first line to hd(0,0)
(c) To the end of the kernel line add rootdelay=8
(d) Press b to boot the system with these temporary corrections.
(e) Once your Arch system has booted, edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst to make the above changes permanent.
The relevant portion of my /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like the following:
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/... ro rootdelay=8
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
# (1) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux Fallback
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/... ro rootdelay=8
initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img
9. The laptop happily and consistently boots Arch Linux from the external USB HDD when it's plugged in before startup/booting.
Running Arch from the external USB HDD seems as quick as running Debian from the internal HDD.
So if there is a performance penalty associated with using an external USB HDD, my wife and I haven't noticed.
In summary, the three essential points to address during installation to an external USB HDD are:
Remember to set the bootable flag for the first partition.
Add USB to the HOOKS for /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file.
Correct the /etc/grub/menu.lst file.
I hope this is helpful.
TedHi Rookie,
As you say, it is worth remembering the rootfstype= option for the kernel line just in case someone still has problems with GRUB after making all the other changes.
I was working with the most recent Arch 2009.2 release.
I only got messages about unrecognisable file system type when I tried booting with the "stock" or "as-installed" GRUB (before I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst). After editing /boot/grub/menu.lst to identify the drive correctly and add rootdelay, GRUB was able to do the rest and everything worked OK without any error messages.
Best wishes,
Ted -
Tecra M2: Can I Boot from External USB/Firewire-HDD ???
Hi All,
how can I boot from an external USB Drive ?
The Bios 1.20, 03/15/2004 doesn't seem to support this on my Tecra M2.
I have an Maxtor 300Gig external HDD which can be connected via Firewire or USB. Usually I am using an Firewire PCMCIA-Card to connect this HDD, which has 3 partitions on it.
Would it also be possible, to Boot via PCMCIA-Firewire ?
Many thanks in advance.
LembongHi
As far as I know its not possible to boot from a USB HDD. I know that in some cases its possible to boot from compatible USB FDD and CD/DVD drives but note from HDD.
This theme was disused a lot of time here in the forum.

SMB errors copying from Windows Mac serv - "Not Enough Free Disk Space"
Mac OS X 10.5.5 server with 4TB usable internal space (RAID5 volume) shared out via SMB so that windows workstations (XP Pro SP3) on local subnet can mount them.
when copying files from internal drives on workstations to SMB share on the Mac fileserver, I get no problems. When copying files from external (USB 2.0) drives from workstation to server, i get constant errors of:
"Cannot copy x: There is not enough free disk space. Delete one or more files to free disk space, and then try again."
I've tried all different combinations of SMB settings with permissions and opt locks etc, but so far found nothing that works.
Anyone run into this and resolved it?UPdate Update... after turning logging to high, i've found the following error in my SMB logs upon copying one of the seemingly random files (I can now make the error happen by copying the same file that caused the error)

I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?
Drive Partition and Format
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive. -

Thx in advanceYes I have the same problem with a WD My Passport Essential on a 2011 iMac running Mavericks. Opening Unlock Drive I find it says 'The drive is already unlocked' but will not allow me to see the contents of the drive. Only the Smartware 'CD' image shows up in Finder. Unaccountably the same WD drive unlocks fine on a 2009 MacBook (also running 10.9) How can I 'set a breakpoint' as advised below in Terminal result...? I am worried I will accidentally lose the data on the 750Gb drive in the process of fixing the error.
Thank you for advice!
DriveUnlock(5333,0xa077d1a8) malloc: *** error for object 0x1bb364: incorrect checksum for freed object - object was probably modified after being freed.
*** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug -
External USB HDD Wireless Sharing
HI,
I have an external USB HDD which has an HFS partition which I used to backup my macbook using TimeMachine. Now I want to share my external USB HDD wirelessly.
I know it can be possible by using Airport Exterme Base Station or use the Time Capsule.
I want to know if any other Wireless Routers support the HFS partition to be shared wirelessly?By default, Personal File Sharing only shares specific directories on your boot drive and home directories. If you want to share external volumes you need to configure them manually.
The easiest way to do this is to get a copy of SharePoints which puts a nice GUI on the file sharing configuration files. -
X220 Ultrabase external USB HDD strange click sounds on boot
I have X220 and Ultrabase 3. External USB HDD (WD Passport) is connect to one of Ultrabase USB ports. When I reboot and press F12 to get the boot menu there are two strange click (or scratch) noises coming out of the external HDD. One click before the menu appears and second after boot device (CD drive) is selected. I tried different HDD with the same result. It loooks like a short power drop or so but it happens with the boot menu only. The first external HDD I used for three years is damaged now, don't know whether it is connected with this issue. BIOS version 1.38, no USB 3 port. I found the issue is specific to Ultrabase USB ports. When the same external HDD is connected directly to notebook USB port, it is fine. I use the Ultrabase setup for booting from Acronis TrueImage bootable CD to create backups. Anyone has similar issue ? Is possible to use the notebook USB port when it is docked in Ultrabase ?
It could be that the port where it does not function may not be producing sufficient power for the given HDD. It has been shown that all USB ports do not output the same power. You might test with a USB 'Y' connector or a powered hub.

3 mem stick in dual mode - how high + external usb HDD boot question
Hi guys. I have 2 questions:
1. If I put 2X512 mb Kingmax DDR 433 mem sticks in one channel and the 1 gb stick in another one will I be able to run mem clock on 209 MHz in dual channel mode (because of memory controller limitations)? Is there any chance to break 200 fsb limit with this memory combination.
2. I have Philips SPD 5100CC external USB HDD. Last night I tried to install windows xp on it but after first reboot I am getting the messsage Windows could not boot ........windows root\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupted. I have latest bios and the drive is listed in boot menu under Hard Drive option and so is my USB flash drive. I boot without any problem from USB flash. Is this related with the mobo or external HDD encosure?well, one thing is sure, you won't get dual channel if you use 3 memory sticks. the problem is that sometimes you cannot even boot with 3 modules installed. check the mobo manual on the possible memory modules configurations

Satellite L20-100 can be booted from external USB hard drive?
I recently bought Toshiba Satellite L20-100 and I wonder if:
1. is there any possibility to boot this machine from external usb hard drive?
2. it is possible to attach another internal hard drive?
Supposing that the both answers above are 'no', how can I solve the following problem: I need hdd space, I need to boot 3 separate Wxp Operating Systems onto the same machine (Toshiba Satellite L20-100).Booting from external USB HD - "No" would be the official, mcrsoft sponsored, answer. However, it is possible. Not easy but it can be done. I've seen it done with my own eyes and there are guides how to do this. Just look for it with search engine. But if you have enough disk space you better do what was suggested here - create 3 partitions and use boot manager.

Finder crashes when I try to open my external USB HDD
Hello all. I have been experiencing issues with my external USB HDD (WD Passport) and my Macbook Pro (Summer 2012) for some time. It looks that the HDD shows up on the desktop when I connect it but when I try to open the My Passport icon on the desktop Finder crashes. Finder works OK generally and I can see everything (even the Passport listed) but I cannot access the Passport HDD contents.
I have tried accessing it via terminal and managed to view the Passport contents ok (ls -ltr etc)
I have tried repairing the disk but the issue remains.
I have connected Passport to a Windows 7 PC and it works OK. I have even tried repairing it on a Windows PC but it has not helped.
Ejecting, rebooting etc does not solve the issue
Every time the issue occurs I see a PM Report Crash for Finder
11/24/13 5:46:21.004 PM ReportCrash[1374]: Saved crash report for Finder[1377] version 10.8.3 (10.8.3) to /Users/Panos/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Finder_2013-11-24-174621_Panos-MacB ook-Pro.crash
Could you please suggest any solution to this problem??Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
