"Unlimited" BT Broadband - Download speeds locked ...

Since February 16th something has been choking my broadband connection literally pretty much to death. 15kbps download speed doesn't constitute broadband. That is, nevertheless, pretty much all we've been getting.

Already had an engineer round, called for a reset - seemed to fix the problem for a few days - that held almost good for 8 whole days however, come peak - broad band would throttle down. Now its back to what it was, throttled to 15kbps. Doesn't mater what you try to download or where you download it from - p2p or http - makes no difference.
Current maximum just about makes 15kbps.
How do I get this fixed, please? Getting pretty **bleep** PO'd.

... I've been connected to the **bleep** test socket since February, John. The engineer even fitted us with a brand spanky new socket, just to eliminate any possibility of bad copper.
Now peak is over, indeed. Yes. Download speeds are higher. Currently notching up 167kbps! Three minutes ago I crossed the Heisenberg Threashold, ended up in 1947 and shot my own Grandfather....
Never time travel with a loaded gun, John. It's bound to end in shinanikins.
But. On a serious note. We're supposed to be getting between 1-2mbps on this thing, John. Now we're on unlimited. That's what we're supposed to be getting. Highest it has yet gone is 300kbps. That's the best it does.
We don't switch off the hub. I've had it running constantly. **bleep** thing keeps dropping its connection. Doesn't do it when speeds are up. buy when they're crawling - and by this I mean litterally struggling to make it up to 15kbps - the poor thing probably feels like its had it's throat cut.
PS: Thank you for the info. We use adsl filtered NTE5 faceplate. Enginner checked the line March 6th. Lines fine - he found the problem came down to the SNR being set to 15db Interleaved when (for our distance from the exhange box) really we should be set to 9 db Interleaved. Called for a remote reset - immediate pick up. This held fine for about 8 days but, as the days went by - speeds started dropping as peak kicked in - now we're in the possition we are.
The question is how do we get this fixed.
Pretty sure the problem is with the Automated Traffic Nazi at the exchange. When it throttles back the line - the Hub 3 drops the connection. When the Hub 3 drops the connection....

  • Broadband download speed has dropped from ~2.7Mbps...

    Hello,
For the last few weeks our broadband download speed has dropped from ~2.7Mbps (which we've been getting consistently for years) down to 0.7Mbs. It's now so low that our download speed is slower than our upload speed. I've take the following steps and nothing has worked:
Running the BT Broadband Speed Checker
Removing all equipment so its just the BT Home Hub connected through a BT Microfilter straight into the master socket
Replacing the modem cable and Microfilter
    Online line fault check
As I say, it only recently - over the last few weeks - that our speed has decreased so massively from what we've been getting for years and it is extremely frustratingly slow - I can get faster speeds via my mobile phone's 3G network.
Here's a screenshot of the ADSL line status from the BT Home Hub.

when you joined BT broadband you would have received an email address *****@btinternet.com or  ******@btopenworld.com   Bt would normally send the emails to that address

  • Widely varying broadband download speeds, why?

For a little over one week now (and tested a various points during the day) my broadband download speeds were so slow it was not possible to get a reading using the BT tool (Broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk recorded download speeds of around 0.185 mb).  Checking with BT there was no reported fault.  Today is has restored to a perfectly acceptable 2.85 mb connection speed (2.55 mb download speed).  As far as I am aware nothing has changed.  Any suggestions why?  Thanks,  Nick

    Hi,
I have been having problems with my download speed for the last month.  i have been through the fault process from BT and have had no joy in fixing the issue.  They say i am getting 8mbps from the exchange to the house but only 1.94mbps  there after.  I was receiving 8mbps for about 2 years consistantly and has just suddenly changed.  Can anyone please help me?  I feel like i'm getting nowhere after reporting the fault.

does this explain anout diwnload speeds relative to connection speed. http://techallica.com/kilo-bytes-per-second-vs-kilo-bits-per-second-kbps-vs-kbps/.
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Broadband download speed has dropped to 2Mbps

    Hi
I believe I am having exactly the same issue and am being told to do lots of tests / switch off hub etc. Running BT's own test I appear to be getting 8mb from the exchange but only 2mb from my hub (consistantly).
I'm new to this forum so can you tell me who I can email to try to resolve this as per this thread?
    Thanks for any help

  • FTP download speed issue

    Hi,
This problem only started occurring from yesterday, but I'm getting very poor FTP download speeds.
I use a dedicated server to store my work files then download at home but I'm finding it impossible now.
Speeds no higher than 150kb/s even though I have 80mb unlimited.
If I download any test files over HTTP I get full speed, its just an FTP issue (port 54630)
I've rebooted router / reconnected etc... With no luck
    Can anyone help?
    Much appreciated

Are you sure you are not getting confused with Mbps  (Megabits per second) and MBs (Megabytes per second)?
Megabytes are Megabits divided by eight.
So a download speed of 17Mbs equates to an actual data transfer rate of 2.125MBs (Megabytes), which is what you are getting.
Download managers usually use megabytes and not megabits, so there is nothing wrong with your connection.

  • Observed download speed vs speed checkers

    Hello everyone,
I am a new BT Unlimited Broadband customer, though I am not new to broadband nor the technical side of the internet. I have been using a BT Home Hub 4 for around a month now without disconnection problems.
We live in a new build area and thus Infinity is not available to us at the moment. Our estimated (by BT) and reported (by various speed checkers, including BT's own two) download speed is 7 - 10Mbps, usually around 8. The Home Hub reports 10.x Mbps for download.
In contrast, our observed download speed (as tested using various large sample files across several protocols) is actually consistently 1Mbps.
I'd like to draw on the collective wisdom of forum contributors and ask for advice on the following question:
Can you think of any practical reasons, assuming ideal conditions on my end, why our actual download speed would be so much less than the reported download speed?
    Thanks

Run btspeedtester and post the results please
This may help with your calculations
    Internet speed = Download speed
    256 kbps = 31,3 KB/s
    512 kbps = 62,5 KB/s
    1 mbps = 122,1 KB/s
    5 mbps = 610,3 KB/s
    10 mbps = 1220,7 KB/s

  • BT Broadband Up Speed is incredibly low

So, a while back, around the last World Cup in 2010, BT started doing this promotional thing where they would go round your house, change your entire broadband and phoneline system, in an effort to make them more money on the World Cup for BT FreeView, anyways. When they did this, the speed of the internet went really, really, REALLY slow. And ever since I've had to live with BT ruining my internet. We're currently on the Unlimited Broadband package, and we are literally across the street, and directly opposite of the phoneline box thing. And my Download speed is fine, it's great in fact, my ping is also quite good. But my Upload speed, is just...awful. I'm averaging 255kb up speed at night and in the morning. And I've tried contacting your email support and your phone support, and that also, is just awful. I really need this to be sorted out as this is painstaking. I stream on twitch regularly and require good internet, but am limited in fps, quality, bandwidth, and most importantly...upload speed. Please if someone could help, do.

  • Download Speed Capped?

We've had Unlimited Fibre Optic for a few months now and whenever I've downloaded something, whether that be using my browser or programs like Steam etc. to download games, I've never seen my download speed go over 4.5 mb/s however when I do a speedtest, I get over 35 mb/s consistently. Surely this isn't right and I'm starting to think Sky has capped download speed for whatever reason. Any help is appreciated and my router stats are below along with the speedtest..  Broadband LinkDownstreamUpstreamConnection Speed40000 kbps9999 kbpsLine Attenuation8.6 dB0.0 dBNoise Margin26.2 dB31.31 dB  http://www.speedtest.net/result/4544529825.png

You are likely confusing megaBITS and megaBYTES.
    8 BITS (b) = 1 BYTE (B)
    So 4.5megaBYTES per second (4.5MB/s) = ~36megaBITS per second (36Mb/s)
Capital B or lower case b makes a huge difference.
Broadband speeds are (almost) always quoted in megabits per second, web browsers and apps often show speeds as megabytes per second, hence the confusion.

  • Infinity 2 download speed fluctuations

I had had BT Broadband Unlimited for over a year with a solid 14Mbps down and 1Mbps up connection. I participate in the SamKnows monitoring programme and have their white box installe on Lan Port1 on my present Home Hub 5 router and the Netgear I used prior to that. BTW I moved to HH5 before getting Infinity as it is a cheap deal for a dual band router and has good range. My PC (iMac) is connected to the SamKnows Bridge.
I moved to Bt Infinity 2 on the 14th May and the Openreach engineer moved my Master socket to the extemsion that I have always used for my ADSL router: it was installed by BT about 5 years ago.
For the first few days all was well 75 Mbps down and 18 Mbps up logged by SamKnows  and also confirmed bt BT Wholesale Test.
After that the SamKnows logging started to show big fluctuations throughout the day in the download speed: it does an hourly test adn the download was dropping to less than 40 Mbps but upload was only doent to 14 to 15Mbps.
I called BT Tech Support and was asked to remove the Sam Knows bridge on Lan 1 and connect my PC direct into Lan port on HH5, shot down all wifi and powerline devices and range extneders and doa hard reset on my HH5. Did all this and was then asked to monitor the line for 24 hours using the BT Wholesale Test to see if the issue persisted.
The issue persists logging shows the line fluctuating between 75.24Mbps Down and 27.34Mbps down. Here is the raw data so far.

It seems to me that there must be excessive contention in the cabinet my line is on which is strange as the excahnge onlt opend for FTTC at the start of May.
My question is what approach should I take when I go back to BT tech support on this issue this evening? Any suggestions much appreciated.
And why do BT tech support not provide you with a ticket ID from their helpdesk system for tracking the issue or are the actions so far logged against my account and line number?

Thanks to Valthos for a very helpful and eloquent response: it must have taken quite a lot of thought and effort for them to write as a troll they  obviously have problems with both their basic literacy and interpersonal skills
Anyway, your contract with BT is not one of "best effort" it provides a profile giving a minumum level of service. I believe that as taxpayers we have contributed something like £2.9 billion towards the construction of the Openreach FTTC/P infrastrucutre. IMHO £26.00 pcm is quite a reasonable amount to pay BT for a VDSL2 service and is in line with what other ISPs charge.
After several sessions with BT support and having been asked  to reset and monitor the line using the BT Wholesale Performance Test the issue was chased to a fault in the line configuration at the exchage. After a change the line has now settled down to 75 Mbps downand 18Mbps up so I am a happy customer again.
Thanks again to Valthos for their critical insight and help with this issue.

When we connect a laptop to the router directly, we are able to get the expected speeds. When we connect through the ASA, download speed is topping out around 16mb, while upload is a consistent 75mb+

Have you tried running without the "service-policy TRAFFIC_SHAPING interface outside" ? Just to check.

  • Why am I just getting 0.5Mbit/s download speed?

We have had BT phone and broadband (BT Total Broadband) services for a few years in our household. On broadband, I used to get about 2-4Mbit/s download speed. 1 year ago, this suddenly dropped to about 0.5Mbit/s. For the last year I've been using my internet with a measly max. of 60kbps. I really don't know why this has happened, but it is incredibly frustrating. Can't really use YouTube or iPlayer.
I went on my BT Home Hub settings and found that the downstream is 572 kbps, which corresponds to the download speed I get. Before discovering this, I did a speed test using my test socket but got the same result. A speed test done today using BT diagnostics gives me 0.48Mb download and 0.57Mb upload.
But what's going on? Why is this so? Why did it suddenly drop? What can I do about it? I remember being on 10Mbit/s with Virgin a few years ago, that was more like it. Any assistance would be kindly appreciated.

  • Slow Download Speeds

Hello, back in august i had a problem with a my broadband speed, going from 5-6 meg down too less then 1 meg
Seems its came back to haunt me.
For the past 6-8 weeks my connection has been terrible, all BT seem to be interested in doing is,  a line reset every time i phone.
When they do the line reset i can get 4 meg at max for a few days then it goes back down to less then 1 meg sometimes i get as little as .20 meg
Im gettin 2-3 at the minute but i dont think that will last long... the connection hasnt been dropping much but today its been dropping alot
    Thanks in advance
