‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • Unlock ipad mini

    Hey Guys,
I recently purchased an iPad mini (wifi+cellular) from an online portal in the UAE to be used in India. One of my friends in Dubai received it yesterday (July 10) from the portal. When she opened the box, she realised that a Verizon sim card was already inserted in it. She tried using an Etisalat sim card and it did not work. When I spoke with Apple, they confirmed that the device was locked with Verizon and suggested that I contact them to get it unlocked. So I called up Verizon. Verizon told me that they could not find any information regarding the device using the IMEI and the ICCID and that they could only unlock devices with a calling capability (iPhones) and not iPads. I am not sure what I can do more to get it working before I can send it back to the seller under their return policy. Does anyone know if there is anything else that can be done to make it work? Of course, I can send it back before the end of day on Saturday (July 12), but just wanted to give it one last shot before I return it.
    Thanks,
    Sudeep

You need to contact the wireless carrier that it is locked to (AT&T) and see if they will unlock it.  You also need to find out if the carrier you want to go to supports the device (wifi + cellular).

  • How can I buy a factory unlocked iPad mini without restriction of buying it with a cellular line?

I need to buy an iPad mini via the apple website which is factory unlocked, but the option I am getting is to buy it with a cellular line of which I will be tied to use only that line.
How can I proceed with this purchase?

Easily, you cannot.  You can buy an unlocked iPad within a country in which an iPad is unlocked - Thailand, for example.

    Hello geraldwendle
I do not have enough information to go on, but it sounds like you cannot get into your iPad because of a passcode. If that is the case follow the steps in the article below to get it sorted out for you.
iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.
    Regards,
    -Norm G.

  • HT201299 Unlocked ipad mini?

I live in Europe and I want to purchase an ipad mini online from the US site and have it shipped within the US. Is there a way to do this without having to chose a cellular service provider or should i just chose anyone at random and then just use my own provider in my country of residence.  WIll the ipad work or will the settings be such so that the ipad will be locked?  I do not see any options for buying the ipad without a service provider...

Just pick one, they are all unlocked and will work with any carrier.
The only drawback is with the AT&T model. If you decide to someday activate it on Verizon, they will not be able to since they only activate devices that they have a record of (IMEI).
If you ever need the warranty for a repair, you would need to return to the US to have it serviced.

  • How to unlocked IPad mini

I am going to travel to South America for 6months. I need to unlocked my iPad mini because they don't have free wifi and I need to get a short contract with wireless company. What I need to do to unlocked? I need a really quick answer

The iPad mini is not locked to a carrier, so you do not need to do anything. However, 4G/LTE may not work.
The 4G+LTE version for AT&T specifically supports the 700 MHz and 2100 MHz 4G LTE frequencies as well as UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz) and GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz). This model is available around the world for a variety of carriers, but as it only supports 4G LTE frequencies in the US (on AT&T) and Canada (on Bell, Rogers and Telus) it only will work with 3G networks in other locations, which led to legal troubles for Apple in some countries.
    In the US, the Verizon version specifically supports just the 700 MHz 4G LTE frequency. It also supports CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz), UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz), and GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz).

  • Is there a way to have my iPad Mini's Smart Cover open up to the lockscreen instead of unlocking it?

I'm using 32gb iPad mini 1st gen, which is running iOS 8.1.2. I have a Zagg Keyboard Folio Smart Cover.
My "lock/unlock" option in settings is on, and works just fine, but while I want my iPad to lock itself automatically I do not want it to UNlock—just turn the screen on upon opening the device.
I DO NOT want to use a passcode to do this.
I found a thread posted three months ago on Reddit (will link soon) which said this was possible with a "iPad cover unlock" toggle setting in "General," but I cannot find this option in my settings.
Does anyone have any ideas? It bothers me in the most insignificant manner possible, but I would like to change it if I can.
I fully appreciate any and all help! Thank you in advance!

You cannot set it to unlock only. It's both or nothing.
