Bought this clean iphone 5 for use in India.
Now when I switched it on it says its inactivated and is locked to Sprint.

Sprint says for me to unlock it I need a valid sprint account that is used for 90 day?!!

I an not sure whether this post should be in this community or not.
I will have a trip to USA next week. It's cheaper and more convenient to buy an iPhone in America and I wanna get one during my trip. My friend said it is not 100% sure that you can buy one in a retail store without a booking. However I can't find any way to do booking. I know there's a pick-up service but it is not suitable for me.
So I want to know how can I buy iPhone in my trip? I will visit the Fifth Avenue on 25th Jan. and I want to know without a booking can I buy an unlock iPhone4S?

You can call them to see if they have some in stock. The last time I visited an Apple Store they did have unlocked iPhones in the store, but stores inventory vary.
After looking at this it seems that they do not have any in stock at the Fifth Avenue Store.

You will have to talk to the carrier who locked the devie orginally; ain't nothing in this world for free...devices are locked due to contracts. They sell you devices for a portion fo the retail price and need the contract to make their money back.

If you buy it directly from apple as unlocked yes. I know some places sell "unlocked" phones that lock to the first network you connect them to. Your best bet is to buy directly from apple.

If the unlock was authorised by orange and then done through iTunes then yes it can be used with any compatible carrier. And future OS updates will never relock it.

Why do I depend on a carrier for 10.2.1 update if I bought the phone from an electronics shop, unlocked

I am mad on Blackberry for this, because I don't undestand why !
I bought the my phone, a Z10 from an electronics shop, so it is unlocked and not dependable on any carrier, and I paid premium.
The first time I turned on the phone, BB Link did update the OS, though some minor stuff.
Now I see carriers around the world are pushing the 10.2.1 update to their phones but what about me ? I do have a sim card of a carrier (Vodafone) wich did not release the update yet, but WHY DO I need to wait for them to push the update ? Why can't I just update the phone trough Blackberry Link ?
Is there a good reason why the update can only be made if the carrier the phone runs on make it available ?
I find this very stupid !

i asked for an unlocked one from best buy store but they gave me one with simlock to at&t. i did not sign any contracts so i hope there is a way to get it unlocked. i tried to email apple but it seems impossible, i couldn't find a link to email them. i can't get a refund because it's more than one month and best buy won't take it back. any idea??? thnx!

If it is an unauthorised unlock (jailbreak) updating or restoring the software will lock it again and you will need to contact the carrier yourself to unlock it.
Be really careful when buying second-hand "unlocked" iPhones because most are done with a jailbreak.

Hi, I am traveling to Romania in a few days. I called Verizon Global Support and had them unlocked my sim card for the 4s.
They told me there was some steps I had to take after they unlocked it and I will find these steps on the Apple website.
Well I cant find what they are talking about and my search on the internet is not giving what I want.
I see things about Sprint 4s and that u must connect your phone to Itunes to complete the unlock process is this the same for verizon ?
The Verizon Rep told me I will be able to use a Internation Sim but I had to connect my phone to a computer after replacing the International sim and go threw a whole process of Restoring and resetting my phone threw Itunes. Is there true ? I dont not have a internation sim with me is there any other way to see if its unlock and how the process is ? Do i need to set my phone to only run on GSM when I get there or will the International sim automatically switch the band ?
I know its alot of question all at once but i just want to get to the point.

Verizon has confirmed (here and here) they WILL unlock the SIM on the iPhone 4S, allowing for use of local SIM cards while traveling abroad (no word yet on whether this will allow for use on AT&T and T-Mobile.) This is different than the jailbreak unlocking method; SIM unlocking through Verizon is permanent and will not affect your warranty in any way.
1. Meet the following requirements:
* Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
* The iPhone 4S being unlocked must be active on a Verizon Wireless line of service.
* The line of service must be active at least 60 days.
* The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days.
* Only one SIM Unlock per line every 10 months.
If you don't meet one or more of the above requirements, call anyway. You may still get lucky.
2. Insert a foreign SIM into the SIM card slot on the side of your phone (only required to confirm that the unlock is successful.)
3. Call 1-800-711-8300 (Verizon Global Support) and ask the representative for a SIM unlock. Occassionally a representative may not know exactly what you are referring to; make sure you are not transferred to a different department. You are in the right place. Explain that they should have a walkthrough on how to do this, and that it allows for the use of local, non-Verizon SIM cards while traveling abroad.
4. Get confirmation from the rep that the unlock has been applied to your account, then check your phone to make sure it recognizes your SIM and can connect (if successful it will roam on AT&T, assuming you are calling from the USA.) You will NOT see an unlock confirmation in iTunes as that is for a factory-applied unlock only.

If you do not meet their requirements or they do not offer unlocking there is no official way to unlock the device.
