Unlock preferences

Recently I have been unable to 'unlock' to make changes in system preferences.
I click on the lock (I am logged in as admin) and nothing happens?

Hi
Thanks for the reply
OSX 10.9
In system preferences if I go to, say, Security and Privacy and try to make a change I cannot because I can't unlock the padlock at the bottom left of the window. When I click on it to unlock it flashes and then reappears. No option to enter a password.
I can do a screen shot if you like, but it's just the regular window

  • 2010 MacBook: Can't unlock Preference panes

I have a mid-2010 MacBook running OSX 10.7.4. Computer's operation is normal except for this issue. The issue is that I cannot use the administrator password to unlock preference panes or install software, but it works when logging in. I have tried restarting, resetting PRAM, repairing and verifying volumes from the repair utility, etc. The Users and Groups preference pane is locked, so I cannot create a new administrator account. I have also tried changing the password. The computer occasionally reverts (seemingly at random) to the old login screen (two text boxes, one for username and one for password on a gray background), and on this screen I cannot login either. I would like to confirm that the username is correct when I enter it, so you know that isn't the issue. The password is definetely correct, as I mentioned earlier. When installing software, it recognizes that the password is correct/incorrect (when incorrect, the box shakes), but it just closes quickly, having decidedly not installed the software.
    Thank you for any help!

I believe I have the same problem but when I try to delete the com.apple.HIToolbox.plist file I get the following message:
The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100022).
To clarify, my problem is that I have lost my admin privelages dispite being logged in with the admin account.
At the password stage of installing any package, when I enter my password, the password the dialogue box will disapear but I will not have advanced a step in the package wizard.
Also, when trying to unlock the padlock in system preferences, once the password is entered, the dialogue dispaears and the padlock remains locked (but is highlighted like when you hover over it).
I know I'm entering the right password because if I enter any other password, I get the standard wrong password reaction. I am also definately an admin, it says so under my name in 'current user' sidebar of 'users and groups'.
    I am running Mac OS X 10.7.2 on a 2.3Ghz Macbook Pro.
Any help is greatly appreciated that doesn't involve reinstalling the system.
    Many thanks,
    Dan.

  • Script setting require an admin password to unlock preferences

Hidden in System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Advanced is a button to turn on or off requiring an administrator level password to unlock various System Preference options. This will secure certain preference options as defined in the /etc/authorization file.
When you turn it on it will set to true that those preference options are to be secured and when you turn it off it will set the control to false. By making a copy of the file /etc/authorization and then doing a diff of the before and after copies you can see the changes. (Or open both copies and scroll through them.)
However it seems it also sets a flag someone where else to indicate which mode it is in, this I somewhat expected because it is possible to manually modify the settings in /etc/authorization and it would need some overall method of determing which mode it is in.
My problem is that I don't know where this overall flag is kept, it does not appear to be in /etc/authorization itself although I may have missed it.
Does anyone know where this setting is?
With this information it would be possible to then write a script to apply the changes to /etc/authorization and also set that overall flag for the purposes of pre-configuring a computer when imaging it.
    Thanks.

its should disable but every time i open the system preferences still show up ????
Or i should make restart ?
That is a different question. Your initial question was about where the setting was.
I never messed with the setting before and I have always had to unlock locked preferences.  I tried it just now, though, and it doesn't seem to do what it says it should. Maybe it does something but I don't know what it is.  You can try a restart or log out but I am doubtful it will make a difference.

  • Unlock preference panes via ARD

    Hi all,
I have a group of about 75 macs that I manage, all with local user accounts. Is there any easy way to use ARD to unlock System Preferences / Print and Fax for each of them, to allow them to add printers?

I'm not sure that's the right approach... You probably want to put a printer configuration to the machines instead.
Offering the sage advice of Dave Saywer...
Take a look at this document:
How to Setup 300 Printers in Just Under 3 Minutes

It's been a lot of help to a lot of people.

  • Droppoing connection and lock 'unlocks' preferences for internet

Can anyone Help? I have a G4 with a speedtouch modem on broadband. It is wired connection. Occasionally the connection drops and I have to close down the computer and reboot. The lock is then off the Network Preferences. It is very annoying as I do not want to lose the page I am on. I have 10.4.6. The lock comes off the settings when this happens.
Don't understand much computer 'jargon' so a simple answer would be appreciated......

Tim - Do you have a suggestion to which type is best, at a reasonable cost? I am using Demon for Broadband connection.
You pays yer money you take your choice.
    Consider this,
how many network ports do you need? Do you need wireless? Do you need VOIP ports?
You can get selection of cheap ADSL routers (£30 to £100) from http://www.solwise.co.uk
I recently setup a few netgear DG834's and they have improved a lot since the last time I set one up.
    http://netgear.co.uk/extra/hwirelessrouterdg834g.php
you can get those for about £65.

  • Why does my imac make the unlock sound when it's not in use

On several occasions over the past few days I've heard my iMac make the sounds I associate with unlocking preferences several times while I was not using the machine.  Can anyone explain this?

Does any apps are running the background? If yes, check them and close them. Are you using it under any high levels of temperature?

  • Why is autolock code always required even when 15 minute delay is set?

Although I set a 15 minute delay in PREFERENCES, my iPad Mini asks for the AUTOLOCK CODE when I open the cover a moment after closing it. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

You have the iPad cover lock/unlock preference set to "on". This causes the iPad to go into lock mode the second you close the cover. If you leave the cover open then your iPad will wait for 15 minutes to lock. You can turn off the lock when you close the cover by going to Settings->General and turning the iPad cover lock/unlock to off.

  • What is "alert detector" and why it is bothering me

Just received my new Macbook Air in the mail
Just transferred my time machine backup to this machine
    Just upgraded to Yosemite
and then much has become pesky, including this at startup every time.
when I open Prefs, no app appears as a possibility for granting access to
what is this "alert detector"?  That is appears nowhere in google makes me highly suspicious.
    help?

A search through my install logs indicates that at least on my system Alert Detector is a component of the AT&T Troubleshoot and Resolve App, which was downloaded and installed when I visited the AT&T UVerse page to resolve a connection problem.   I never noticed it until I upgraded to Yosemite, at which point I got exactly the same message you did.  When I go to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility, "Alert Detector" shows up as an app in the list, with a generic application icon.  I unlocked preferences and unchecked the box for this app, and was able to deny it the ability to control my computer.

  • "writeconfig wants to use the..."

    Hello one and all,
I'm trying to set up a guest account on my MacBook (OS X Snow Leopard) and when I do, I get a prompt box: "writeconfig wants to use the 'com.apple.parentalcontrols.keychain.8F2K6" keychain
It's asking for a password that I don't know. I am the administrator for this computer and do not remember setting a password for parental controls. The only password I'm aware of is the one I use to login to the computer and unlock preference pane settings- and yes, I've tried that password, but it does not work.
Is this a bug? Or is there literally a password I don't know about?

If disk permissions fails to fix it, I suspect a conflict with Symantec/Norton, which is not well regarded
around here, and not needed, imo.
If that's the case, then the problem file may be in /private/var/db/ according to this recent thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11848263
I can only guess that you might not find it in keychain access, and that the security software messes with OS X so that when system prefs tries to change settings, it's forced to attempt accessing that file, which is does not have permission to.

  • Two UC560s, Multisite Config

I have 2 UC 560s in a multisite config, site a and site b have pots lines for outside access, site a has an ext range of 1XX, site b has an extension range of 2XX, and forwarders are in place on both sites to dial across the multisite by 3 digit extension.  The problem we are having is that when, say a user at site a does a cfa to a cell phone and a call comes in to the number for site b, when whoever answers the number at site b tries to transfer to the forwarded extension, it does nothing at all.  When the user at site b transfers to a live extension at site a and a user answers, the user who answered can transfer to the forwaded line and it will contact the cell phone.  Any thoughts?

The vpm debug was active at the time of the call.

  • Time Capsule Volume Not Mounted when waking from Sleep Mode

    Hello all
Time Capsule 500GB, unibody MBP, 802.11n WPA2 encryption
Question: I setup Time Machine to use the disk on Time Capsule. I entered the password then locked the Time Machine preferences. Time Machine backs up to Time Capsule successfully.
I've started to noticed in particular when using Sleep mode often when the machine wakes up (appears to be random) it loses connection to the disk on Time Capsule despite it being locked in preferences. So I would have to unlock preferences, then click on Change Disk, click on TC's disk and enter the password and it connects successfully.
My question is...what is causing Time Machine to unable to mount TC's disk? I have a full strength wireless signal once the laptop wakes up from sleep. I can browse the Internet, use the Airport Utility, etc. however randomly Time Machine can't find TC's disk.

After upgrading to 7.4.1 firmware it fixed my problem

  • Help, MBP Hard Drive is Read-Only, Can't access or unlock any user preferences

I could really use some help. I have searched and tried what I could but I am at a loss with what to do. I first noticed this last night when I was trying to switch users and after entering the correct password nothing would happen. I then went to Preferences to reset my password and the lock icon was closed so I clicked to unlock it and it prompted me for my password and after entering the correct one nothing happens. It simply reverts back to the same window without unlocking.
I am unable to switch users, unlock any locked preferences, install any software, etc as anything that requires my admin password won't work. I am entering the correct password because if the wrong one is entered it "shakes" and the correct one looks as if it will be accepted but it doesn't.
I have tried running repair in Disk Utility and rebooting multiple times to no avail. I finally decided to try and reinstall Lion however once I get to the page asking for admin allowance it again won't go past the password screen so I can't even do that.
After reading tons of threads I came across one that pointed to my Macintosh HD. I chose get info and it turns out that I am now Read Only. The only one with write access is System. Therefore I can't do anything.
I am completely at a loss and really need some help. Some threads I've come across mention running scripts in Terminal but I have no idea what is actually relevant for me and would really prefer some specific help. I was on 10.7.1 so I upgraded to 10.7.2 but the issue is still very much present.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Reboot and hold down the option key at the startup chime. Select Recovery HD. Launch Disk Utility. Try repairing permissions. You can also reinstall from there if you wish.
What have you been using to make backups? Time Machine or some other program?

Whenever I close down Photoshop CS5 I get the message: "Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the get info command in Finder to unlock the file or change permission on the file or enclosing folders." What on earth does it mean? How can I stop this message from appearing?

    See here:
    I cannot save recent images.

  • Could not save Preferences because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the 'Get Info' command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file.

Could not save Preferences because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file. If the problem persists, save the document to a different file or duplicate it in the Finder.

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ General
If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, click it and authenticate to unlock the settings. Enter your login password when prompted.
Click the Advanced button and check the box marked Require an administrator password to access locked preferences in the sheet that drops down. Then click OK.
