Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal the Control Centre and it's the last icon in the group in the middle - it has a padlock with a circular arrow on it.

My screen rotates, as it should with the exception of my email folder. I've tried the obvious fixes with no success, any ideas why all of a sudden it won't rotate and how can I fix it?

Try each of the following steps, in order, until the problem is fixed:
Switch orientation lock on and off a couple times
Quit all apps (including Mail) and reopen Mail
Switch your iPad off and back on
Hard reset by holding the hold switch and home button at the same time for several seconds
Restore to factory settings

Try this:
Quit all apps: Double tap the Home button and swipe the app preview page up
and

Hi Anna,
With iOS7 on an iPhone, you lock the rotation by bringing up the control center and selecting the "Lock Rotation" icon. To bring up the control center, swipe up from the bottom of your screen. You should see a translucent display with the control center options:

My 3 year old son has somehow managed to lock the screen rotation on the iPod touch does anybody no how to reverse this???

Double click the Home button and fully swipe the bottom row past the Music control and tap the circled padlock icon to lock/unlock screen rotation. When locked, the is an icon of a circled padlock by the battery indicator icon in upper right.

When you reset to factory settings, did you restore as new or did you restore from a backup? If you restored from a backup, you could try restoring as new and don't use the backup. If you do that, you will lose all of your data, but you can download or sync all of your content back to the iPad.
You could also try resetting all settings before your restore as new. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. You will have to re enter all device settings again.
And of course the possibility does exist that the iPad has developed a hardware problem that is causing the rotation issue and only a visit to an Apple Store could determine that for sure.

I have been using my IPad 2 for a few months now and as of yesterday it won't rotate ...what gives...and for a day or so it wouldn't send emails as a reply...didn't go into drafts either...just disappeared...weird or something I am doing ? could it be a virus or something horrid like that ?

In settings check to see if you have Screen Orientation checked or System Sounds checked. If you have Screen Orientation checked, there is a button above the volume control on the right side of your iPad (screen facing you). Click it the other way and your screen will again rotate.
If you have system sounds checked in settings, then on your home page, double tap the home button. The bottom row will be your most recently used Apps. Swipe them to the right until the very last icon and it will be a screen orientation icon, which you'll tap and that will allow your iPad to change orientation.

Yes, you can. You can configure the Side Switch (above the volume button) either as Mute switch or Rotation lock.
Settings > General > Use Side Switch to: choose what you like the Side Switch to function as.
