If it is truly unlocked, just sign up for a plan with AT&T when you get to the US and insert the MicroSIM. AT&T will not permit pre-paid plans on iPhones. T-Mobile will, but they are not a supported carrier and you will not get 3G data speeds, only Edge. Other features may not work correctly such as MMS messaging, FaceTime, etc.

I am thinking of buying a 2nd hand unlocked iPhone on eBay which I would want to use with Vaya mobile in Australia, which is not my current provider (it's TPG but they don't have good deals on data). If you buy an iPhone at the UK or Canadian Apple stores, it should work on the GSM frequencies in both countries. LTE will not work as the LTE channels are different in each country and each iPhone sold in each country is only compatible on LTE channels of that particular country. Other wise it should be fine.
Be aware that only the Apple store (retail or online) sells the unlocked iPhone in the UK. I think the situation is similar in Canada. (It is in the US).

I live in Europe, but i have a relative who travels often in USA and i would like him to buy me an iPhone 5 as soon as it gets available unlocked in Apple Stores. The thing is that with 3 existing models of the iPhone 5 being sold since its release, i have no clue which model will be sold in the unlocked version of the phone in Apple Stores. I obviously need the A1429 GSM model since i live in Europe, but will it be available in Apple Stores in USA unlocked, or only the other models will be sold? Will there may be the option to choose whichever of the 3 you like? Do you guys have any information about it?

As far as I know, as a Veriizon subscriber, Verizon will not sell an unlocked iPhone. They will only sell those locked to their network.
Apple does sell unlocked iPhones, but it is best to make arrangements ahead with the store you are going to buy from to be sure they have what you want on hand.
As I said, from what I have seen, the A1249 is not available in the US.

Under apple's tech spec section they show 4 model numbers for Hong Kong but don't indicate which one is the unlocked version - the way they show data is very confusing - even if you put the phone in your shopping cart it shows a different "part number" than the model numbers shown for hong kong. If you purchased the phone in the US with an AT&T contract then you have the locked CDMA A1428 version of the iPhone 5.
At the moment and if the contract is a new contact, then you won't be able to get the phone unlocked at the moment and no, you won't be able to use it in your home country. You will also have LTE 4G compatibility issues too and your phone will only work on 3G and also you need to remember that iPhones are only covered by country specific warranty, so it is only covered in the US, so if you go home and then have a problem with your phone, you will have to come back to the US to get it repaired.
You need to approach AT&T about whether they will unlock your phone for you as they are the ONLY ones that can do it, but the answer to your question is no and if you had wanted to use your phone at home, then you should not have purchased it in the US. The best that you can hope for at the moment is to use it on international/roaming.
If you purchased your phone in the US, then it will be a CDMA phone. You don't have a GSM phone, but GSM phones are unlocked anyway and these are the ones that are selling in Canada and the UK.
If you have your phone on an AT&T contract then ultimately, AT&T are the only ones who can help you with any questions regarding unlocking and they are the only ones who can unlock it for you, noone else.

If you provided more information, my answer would be different. For example, if you posted "I have an unlocked iPhone 5 model A1428, would it work in the EU?" My answer would read, "Your iPhone would work in any country that usesGSM, and if you have the appropriate regional SIM card."

These business practices we practice in the US need to stop, their is a demand that needs to be met with consumers like myself who don't need subsidized iPhone's with 2 year contracts with carriers and don't mine paying full price for an unlocked one, it is unethical in a sense, forcing the customer to buy it with a carrier contract and NOT giving the customer the option to buy it full price and own it themselves, OR, making the consumer wait a month for that option to be available. I understand your frustration, but when any form of rationing is required you have to prioritise. The number of unlocked vs packaged phones will be quite small and the number of unlocked buyers wishing to upgrade immediately will be smaller still. Against this you have the corporations sharing $billions between them.
It would, you're correct, have been fairer to release all at the same time, but fairer doesn't come into it: it's business.

The iPhone bought unlocked from the Apple store in the US will work in Brazil on GSM. Nevertheless the LTE frequencies might be different.
Be aware that:
You will NOT be able to order from the US Apple online store. You will have to go to a physical Apple store in the US.
The warranty is only valid in the US and you will not be able to get warranty service in Brazil.
With all of that, why not buy the iPhone in Brazil?

They can provide some kind of way towards this solutions...
eg:
1) Accept my UK iPhone in India courier it to Purchased Place (Repaired it)
2) Accept my UK iPhone in India Take some difference assign me India iPhone.
3) Accept my UK iPhone in India give me any option to ugreade to iPhone 5 (Indian).
4) Accept my UK iPhone in India give me some Receipt (Courier me My new iPhone from UK).
5) Approve my VISA for going to UK again as it not easy for INDIAN to go there with some kind of this Reason.
6) Give the Postal Address where we can send our APPLE to get only Service and they can send it back to us if it got reparied.
As no one would like to go UK only to Purchase APPLE..
There are some personal reason they have to go to Other countries for ... and If some one is FAN of APPLE like me would do the same mistake that I have done..
7) If the APPLE wanted to serve their customer they would have get to the solutions with their excellent mind.
As far as I am concern I am just the USER of my FAV APPLE but.. .. I guess this policy would not keep me as the SAME FAN of APPLE as I am now...
If this is not going to get solved I guess I have to start with other BRAND Like SAMSUNG S4 where I can get everything in my STATE..
But YEH it not a right was to have this BAD policy.
