Unlocked iphone locked to data plan? really?

I bought an unlocked iphone from the UK apple online store and had used 2 different sim cards on it with no issues,
After arriving to T&T Ive been told that my phone is locked to data services, meaning I can't connect a data plan to my phone because is locked for it at the other hand is it inlucked for voice and call plans. really?
has anyone had this before?

Sounds like whoever you talked to at AT&T is an idiot and/or just wants to push you into buying a new phone so they can get a hefty commission.

I just got an iPad, and am trying to figure out how to get it going.  I have an iPhone with a data plan through AT&T.  Do I need to set up a separate account for the iPad, or can I use it under my existing data plan?

You need a completely different data plan for your iPad which you set up on the device itself and it is billed to a credit/debit card. You cannot share other plans and the iPad account will not appear on your iPhone or any other AT&T account.

  • Unlocked iPhone 4s announcement date??

Is there any close idea on when the unlocked iPhone 4s is coming out?? Or at least when will it be announced?
    Thanks in advance

    2 Questions:
    1.  Does anyone know why Apple keeps selling locked iPhones first and unlocked ones later?  Clearly the subsidized iPhone is more attractive to the masses since its price is lower.  But its not as if the unlocked iPhones (if available from the get-go) would cannibilize sales of the locked ones; and eve if they did, their higher price tag should make for better sales right?  Unless the royalties ATT pays Apple are greater than the profit made on unlocked iPhones directly by Apple.
    2.  I have a friend in Canada who could buy an unlocked for me and ship it.  Im trying to think of a downside because Im still thinking that even if the unlocked phone becomes available in Nov, itll be a pain to get one at an Apple Store (seeing as how even the locked phone is out of stock).
I don't think anyone (who knows the real answer) is going to tell you why Apple has different dates for the subsidized version vs. the sim free one. It has to do with supply and demand, agreements with wireless carriers, antitrust laws, corporate decisions, etc. In any case the unlocked version is available now through the Apple online store.

  • My friend has an iphone with no data plan, how do i send sms messages without my own iphone trying to send an imessage

i have an iphone5 with a data plan, my friend has an iphone5 with no data plan,
how do i send sms messages to him without my own iphone trying to send an imessage
im sure we can tap on the message and select "send as text or sms"
but is there a setting that says 'if recipient has no data, then send as text' - so its more automated
almost like the setting that says 'if i have no data then send sms'.

I have an iPhone 5s with a data plan but I have iMessage turned off. Everyone I know with an iPhone has no problem sending me texts and they automatically go out as sms. If your friend doesn't want others to send messages via iMessage even when he has wi-fi access he can turn iMessage off in Settings > Messages.  If that doesn't resolve the issue see the quote below from (ignore the non-Apple phone references): Can’t receive text messages on a non-Apple phone
If you don't have access to your iPhone, or if you can't deactivate iMessage from your iPhone, please contact Apple Support. Support for this issue is free.

  • Officially unlocked iPhone locked by O2

    Hi,
I bought iPhone 4, officially unlocked from Apple store in UK, and it was Sim-free, but after installing O2 sim card in O2 store the guy their manage to lock my phone, now my phone is locked to O2 network and I can't be used in any other carrier
how it can be locked like this, is it possible to lock unlocked iPhones? and how to unlocked it?
    Please help

    Solarya,
If you bought an unlocked iPhone 4 from the Apple Canada store online, not an authorized reseller then the iPhone should remain unlocked no matter which carrier (Rogers, Fido, Bell, Telus, etc) MicroSIM you use. If it is locking it to the carrier and not allowing swapping of MicrSIM for another carrier then call the number below. Please post your outcome after calling Apple. Per the Apple Canada website:
"Your new iPhone. Direct from Apple and ready to use.
When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it commitment-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time. Questions? Call our iPhone experts at 1-800-MY-APPLE."

  • Question about iphone 4 and data plan..

I have the 3GS with unlimited data.
I am getting the iphone 4.
I will be giving 3GS to wife.
Will the unlimited data plan only stay for the 3GS?
Or can it be transferred to the iphone 4?
Or can I get unlimited plan for both since I'm an existing customer?
    Thanks!!

You can continue with your unlimited plan on the new phone. Your wife will have to choose one of the new data plans for the 3GS.

  • HT201328 How to unlock iPhone locked to Orange/T-mobile UK ?

I bought this iPhone recently from ebay and contacted Orange Support but they said that I have to have account with them at least 3 months...
How I can do this now when even seller doesn't respond resopnd for my massages ?
I have to throw away this phone or there is any way to help me ?
Please let me know how I can resolve my problem...
    Thanks a lot
    Darius

You already have the answer. ONLY the carrier it is locked to can authorize unlocking it.
Establish service with Orange and keep it active for 3 months, then ask them to unlock it.
If the seller advertised it as unlocked, then file a claim with ebay and get your money back.
There is nothing else you can do.

  • (Legally) unlocked iphone locks again when in airplane mode

I unlocked my iphone from O2 and it now has a Vodafone payg sim in it which works fine. However - whenever I put it into airplane mode it says 'different sim inserted' and needs activating in itunes again. Any ideas how I can stop this? Matt

I've got the same problem; any time my iPhone is put into flight mode, or if I power it off fully, or if I let the battery drain completely, it needs to be reactivated via iTunes. Inconvenient at home, makes the thing pretty much useless if I'm travelling abroad. I'm using a T-Mobile contract SIM, so it's not Vodaphone, or the fact it's PAYG.

  • IPhone 3GS - Can I use existing US t-mobile SIM and German O2 SIM cards (for phone calls) without buying a data plan?

I currently use 2 phones to make calls: one t-mobile locked phone for the US and one O2 locked phone for Germany, both without data plan.
Can I upgrade using just one phone (factory unlocked iPhone 3GS)  and continue to use the existing SIM cards for phone calls (just switching the SIM cards when necessary), but use free WIFI spots worldwide for internet access/data transfer?
    Thanks Michael

No supported carrier, including T-Mobile in the U.S., permits the use of an iPhone without a data plan. Though it's technically possible to do it, if and when they find you, they will either charge you for a data plan or shut down your account.

  • Two iPhone questions (existing customer and data plan)

Hello, I have two questions about the iPhone. I am on a family plan with At&t. I don't pay my bill. I want to keep it that way. Will I just be able to take my sim card out of my phone and put it in the iPhone since it's AT&T? Or do I use a new sim card and when activating it choose existing customer?
My second question is I am wondering if it is possible to use an iPhone without the data plan. I know I will be missing visual voicemail and edge but I don't care. Also, will this make me get a thousand dollar bill if I accidentally press safari and don't have a data plan? Thanks.

You can't use the SIM from your existing phone. You would use the new SIM and activate as an existing customer.

You have to get the data plan and for $20 it's worth it, not only is it unlimited data but includes 200 text messages. Without the data plan, you'll pay for every voicemail you access, every text message, any time you check weather/email/youtube/etc. In a nutshell, the data plan covers a lot more than just using Safari to browse the web.

  • Data plan required with a smart phone?

Is Verizon's policy that if you have a smartphone, even one purchased separately, that there has to be a data plan for that phone?
Daughter wants an ipod touch for Christmas; rather than her have both an ipod touch and a dumb-phone, it would make more sense if I could get her an older iphone without a data plan and combine the two, using wifi to download apps.

Just get her the iPod Touch and keep her basic phone, that will give you the best of both worlds until you (or she) is ready to pay for data.

  • Can I buy a SmartPhone without getting the data plan, and just using the wifi?

I was looking into buying an iPhone or smartphone of some sort, but don't want the data plan. Can I get a smartphone or iPhone without the data plan and just normal service?

AT&T GoPhone plan does not require a data plan, you can activate a smart phone on a basic gophone plan.  However, if you don't turn data off at the carrier level, you will get a per use charge for data.
IT is not how the phone and service is expected to work, yet it can and does.  If it works on AT&TA, it will probably work on Verizon also.
I will repeat, this is not how it is designed to work.

  • Extra data plan with iPod?

I already have an iPhone 5s and MacBook pro laptop. If I buy an iPad will I have any other monthly or one time data fees that I will have to pay to add the iPad to the "family."?

The unlimited data plan for the iPhone cannot be shared.
The items shared with a family plan are the calling plan minutes, and SMS can also be shared. An unlimited SMS plan that can be shared with all family plan lines costs $30/mo and is purchased separately.
If your Dad buys an iPhone 3G, the data plan for his iPhone 3G will be $30/mo.

  • Overseas sim and unlocked iPhone 4s

I have an unlocked iPhone 4s and i plan to go overseas i want to get a sim card over there but will i have to activate through iTunes like i did when i first got the phone? or is it just insert and use?
    thanks in advance

TFA, sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm in a similar situation - my dad wants to buy an unlocked iPhone 4s which he will use primarily with a UK sim, however he's going to Thailand for 4 months over the winter and will want to put a Thai sim in for this period, and then when he gets back to England, put his UK sim back in.
Did you find that the overseas sim worked straight away after plugging it in (or did you need to sync it), and was this the same when you put your home sim back in?
I'd like to avoid a situation where he has to sync with itunes when he's away (or back home at the airport when he reintroduces his UK sim), as he's not that technically minded.
    Thank you.
