Unlocked Original iPhone

Ok so I used to have tmobile and last summer I bought a hacked original iPhone off of eBay. After 2 months of having it the keyboard stopped working. Well just the last row where the space bar is. I didn't even attempt to restore it I just ended up getting AT&T and a 3g.
Now I want to fix the broken iPhone to use as a back up if something were to go wrong with my 3g. If I were to a forced restore on iTunes, because the phone won't even turn on anymore, it gets stuck on the Apple Logo, should it fix the keyboard problem and lock the phone back to only AT&T?

Restoring the iPhone with iTunes may fix the keyboard problem, but maybe not. Restoring the iPhone with iTunes will re-lock the iPhone with AT&T unless the restore process bricks the iPhone during the process due to the hack used.

  • How to "re-lock" an unlocked original iPhone?

I have just obtained an original iPhone that's been unlocked and jailbroken, running v1.1.2 software. The original owner was using it with T-Mobile.
I want to put it back to original settings so I can activate it with AT&T, but I don't want to brick it. Can anyone offer some advice on how to do this? I've already been to the AT&T store and the drone there had no idea what to do, but I have an AT&T SIM card ready to use.
Can anyone guide me through this? Thanks!

If your iPhone is the original 2G iPhone, updating or restoring to the latest firmware does not re-lock the iPhone. It only puts it in an unactivated and "jailed" state. Your iPhone remains unlocked. Don't believe me? Try inserting your T-Mobile SIM into the iPhone. You will still see the T-Mobile carrier icon and you will still see the signal bar.
Having an unactivated and "jailed" iPhone may be good enough for you to get service from AT&T, even though your iPhone remains unlocked and most likely usable on all non-AT&T GSM networks.

Can the original iPhone be unlocked without connecting to a MAC or PC?

  • How do I unlock my original iPhone to be used as a backup to my iPhone 3G?

    Hey Everyone,
    Some background:
Back in July '08, my original iPhone died. This occurred 2-3 weeks after the 1 year warranty expired and the Genius at my local Apple Store was kind enough to still replace it with a refurbished one. However, before I met with the Genius, I bought an iPhone 3G (which is what I'm using now).
    My question:
The refurbished iPhone came with firmware 1.1.4 and is useless because it keeps showing the 'connect to iTunes' image. How do I unlock it so I can use it as a back-up to my iPhone 3G?
Right now, it's just a paper weight. When I first got it, I was hoping I could connect it to iTunes to unlock it but I stopped it half way through the process because it started to cancel my iPhone 3G data plan (to replace it with the EDGE data plan). In fact, I had to go to an AT&T store to restore the data plan on my 3G.
FYI, I have no desire to jailbreak it or unlock for use with other mobile carriers. I just want to unlock the phone so that I can use it with my current AT&T plan. I also did a quick Google search an all the articles I found were for jailbreaking the iPhone.
    Thanks!

Ok, weird. After starting this thread, I plugged my original iPhone into my MBP and iTunes displayed a message saying the firmware was too old to synchronize. It suggested that I upgrade the firmware. Instead of continuing, I chose to eject the iPhone and now it's activated - i.e., I can use the iPhone and access the apps (except for the ones that require a data connection). So, I guess I'm all set.
Hopefully, iTunes didn't screw up the data plan on my 3G (I don't think it did since it didn't show any message of communicating with AT&T's servers).

  • Official unlock for all Original iPhones

Given that the maximum subsidy period for any of the original iPhones was 24 months, would it be rational to expect that 24 months after the very last sale of an original iphone, that apple would release a carrier update to ALL original iphones to network unlock them?
I see no logical or commercial reason why this should not be done. Apple keep going after 'green' points, making slightly more useful many thousands of original handsets is plenty green in my opinion.

Regardless, at the end of the day it is the carrier that initiates this, not Apple.
AT&T will unlock some AT&T carrier locked phones when requested by a subscriber during a 2 year contract or after the contract expires, but they aren't obligated to do so by law and AT&T doesn't do this for all AT&T carrier locked phones. If AT&T wanted to unlock an iPhone sold in the U.S., all they need to do is send Apple the request if indeed this is required. This is up to AT&T and AT&T only in the U.S.

Yes. You can't update or restore any GSM iPhone without a valid sim card installed in the phone. The sim card need not be activated, but it must be valid & present. If you want to update, you need to get a sim card.

  • Is it true that I have to wait 12 months before I can unlock my iphone 5 from it's original carrier ?

Is it true that I have to wait 12 months before I can unlock my iphone 5 from it's original carrier ?

As stated earlier, the carriers have full control over unlocking. They are the only ones that can authorize it and it is by their rules. Apple does nothing but facilitate. Any issues you have with unlocking will have to be taken up with the carrier.

  • I unlocked my iPhone 3S last October and now I did an reset . Can be this lock agai?  Because I'm trying to use it and I can't !

I unlocked my iPhone and after a couple of months I did reset. Now I want to use it and I can't . What could happened? It is locked again after my reset ?

How did you do the unlock? If you didn't contact the cell carrier to whom the iPhone was locked and arrange for an official unlocking, then your iPhone was hacked to unlock it and if you restored or upgraded iOS on the iPhone, the unlock has now been removed and the iPhone locked back to the original carrier. Only the carrier can authorize official unlocking.
    Regards.

I need help, I use my phone for everything enclusive to work. I appreciate if you can help. I'm from Brazil. My name and giullia.

Did you purchase this device from Apple or an authorized reseller? It sounds as if you had a device that was jailbroken/hacked to operate on your carrier. Upon updating the iOS, it is now locked back to the original carrier the device was locked to.
Only the carrier the device is locked to can authorize an unlock. You will need to make contact with that carrier and see if they provide unlocking services, and if they do, if you qualify for an unlock. Otherwise, you are out of luck. One that carrier can take care of the unlocking.

i unlocked my iphone 4 factory and i upgrade to 6.1 when i connect it to itunes it apears
The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported
This iPhone is not currently setup to work with carrier you're attempting to use. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked.

It sounds like you or someone else hacked the phone to unlock it. Updating it locked it to the original carrier.
How did you unlock it? The ONLY legitimate way is to ask the carrier it is locked to to unlock it. Any other way requires hacking or jailbreaking the phone.

Sorry, downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple, thus there is no official way to do so. Your phone was re-locked to the carrier it was originally locked to because you hacked it to unlock it. Apple's servers detected such & re-locked your phone. You need to contact the carrier your phone is locked to if you want to get it officially unlocked.

  • UK service provider can no longer unlock my iPhone for US use, and US service providers and Apple store say that only my UK service provider can unlock this phone. Help!

I bought this iPhone while backpacking through Europe 2 years ago. It was the first thing i did after i got off the airplane to help me navigate, book hostels, trains, flights, and talk with family back home. it cost me around 700-800 US dollars, full price since they do pricing/contracts different over in the UK.
It's been a couple years, and I'm ready to ditch my 6 year old Samsung and move on to this iPhone. The problem is, since i wasn't using the UK service for a while, they dropped my number/user account completely and they can no longer unlock my iPhone. I talked to AT&T and the Apple store, and they said that the only way I can unlock my iPhone is by contacting the service company that i originally purchased this from--whom can't help since i no longer have an account with them.
How do i LEGALLY unlock this iPhone for use in the US?

Only the wireless provider to which an iPhone is locked can unlock it.
You may have to get a PayAsYouGo sim from that provider to activate
your account with them so you can get the iPhone unlocked.
There is not other legal way to unlock the iPhone for use with other than
the wireless carrier to which it is locked. Contact them to see what options
they offer for re-activating the iPhone on their network.

So even if I just ask to pay them to replace the lock button they won't because my screens are third-party?
Apple does not repair devices beyond replacing the screen on some models or a battery replacement.  They replace the ENTIRE device.
For the Out of Warranty replacement cost, you could have gotten a fully functional replacement device.  Instead you chose to spend less to get only the screen replaced and continue to live with additional issues.
Apple will not touch the device now.  They will know that it was opened elsewhere and that the replacement screen is not original.

  • Use Original iPhone as iPod Touch

Help. I want to use my original iPhone as an iPod Touch. Every time I connect to iTunes it sends me to the AT&T activation page. I have attempted to use the original SIM and obtained a new one from AT&T. These options have not solved my issue.
I havecontacted Apple Support on two separate occasions. They told me to get a new SIM from AT&T if my original SIM would not work. I have tried two different SIM cards and neither solved the issue. I called support a second time and they told me there was nothing they could do about it and to contact AT&T (yeah right) for a solution. I am disgusted with Apple for the first time in 10 years.

I never messed with my sim card/never opened it up.
After buying my new 100% ooma service I cancled at&t and now get no service and even after a restore it says WAITING FOR ACTIVATION then I slide the unlock and now I can use it just fine.
Perhaps you jail broke yours? I never did and I have no more phone service and my phone acts just like an itouch just fine. If you still have your original sim I'd ask the apples store people to put the original one back in and stop messing with the innards of the iphone as youre not supposed to opening it up at all.
I also suspect your wifi at home is password protected?
remove the password so the iphone can autoconnect and activate then aftewards you can turn back on the wifi router password.
