Unlocking an iPhone 5 with ATT

I submitted the online request to ATT to unlock 3 iPhone 5s. I received an email with the request number for each phone, however, it appeared the unlock procedures were left off the email.  I called ATT and the tech told me to connect the phone to iTunes and back up the phone. When that was done, I'm to click restore the phone and when that is finished, to restore the back up copy.  I did that, but no where did I get a notice that the phone is now unlocked? I called ATT again and this time the individual walked me through the procedure to verify that my phone was unlocked. However, the process he walked me through only lets you know if ATT has released the phone so you can fully unlock it. Its verification of the IMEI number and your request number. It just states status:  completed!  So I decided to do an online chat. Now this individual stated that the phone was released by ATT so I can unlock it. He even provided the above mentioned process. I told him I did all that and he says the phone is still locked. Do it over again!  Is anyone else having these problems with unlocking with ATT? Has anyone successfully unlocked an iPhone with ATT? I'm told when the restore function is completed, I should get a notice that the phone is now unlocked. I haven't seen one yet.  I believe there is a magic number of attempts before ATT permanently locks your phone?  Anyone has any suggestions?  Thanks

AT&T sends the unlock authorization to Apple. Apple then updates their database to show that the phone is unlocked. Several days can elapse from the time AT&T authorizes the unlock and Apple provisions it. You then connect the phone to iTunes, back it up, then restore iOS (NOT the backup). AFTER iOS is restored you restore the backup. You should see this in iTunes if it was successful: "Congratulations, your iPhone is unlocked."

      Could you not restore the device to an earlier version?
    No, you cannot downgrade your iOS device.
    That may mean jailbreaking, I'm not sure.
    Jailbreaking is not supported by Apple or this forum.
    Or what about replacing the motherboard?
    There are no user serviceable parts on an iPhone.

    There is no such thing as an unlock code.   Sprint may have processed the unlock, and then requested you restore the iPhone using iTunes to complete it. But that's it. There is no code to enter, and nowhere to enter it any way.

    yep, unfortunately can't reset without the passcode either.
    With regards to doing a restore, do you mean:
    open itunes on my computer
    click on my device on the left
    go to the device summary
    click restore
    it then asks if i want to back up before i restore (to which i say no)
    then it asks me if i'm sure I want to restore to factory settings and that all of me media and data will be erased and replaced with the newest version ( to which I say yes)
    then it takes about 90 mins to do this but when I look at my phone, everything is exactly the same.
    Am I missing something? Obviously I'm technologically challenged, but I HAVE to get to the bottom of this!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    You need to use the Apple IDs that you created for them for iCloud as well as iTunes. You will also find that you need to use them for messages and face time.

    Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
    Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
    Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137  For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
    Test the issue after each step.  If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

    be able to use it with providers that us GSM
    for their service and cannot be used on CDMA
    networks, i.e. an AT&T phone cannot be used

    SMS is exchanged over the same network as calls - no data involved.
    MMS requires data.
    iMessage requires the same as email - internet access via an available wi-fi network or via your carrier's cellular data network.
    You can disable SMS/MMS altogther with your account by requesting this with AT&T. You can turn iMessage off unless your iPhone is connected to an available wi-fi network.

    Since you bought it from T-Mobile, T-Mobile will unlock the iPhone if you have had service wit T-Mobile for 45 days and the phone must be paid off through T-Mobile with no balance owed.
    This is for US bought T-Mobile iPhones in the US.

    I've recently updated my iphone 4s with the ios7 update and there was a bug fix I also downloaded recently but I hadn't noticed anything wrong at the time. I know it's not happened that often today but does anyone have any problems with their 'slide to unlock' button and have to reload their iphone again? Do you think there'll be a bug fix for it? Just worried as it's not old and I have a feeling I shouldn't have bothered with the update at all.

    Why would you think it's a bug?  If it were a bug EVERYONE would be having the same issue.
    Basics from the user guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new.

    What's unclear is if AT&T is including their HSPA+ network as "4G" It is technically 4G according to th ITU and they market it that way.
    They do specify that pre-paid data is for feature phones only. Not smartphones of any type. From the same document:
    Data Services for Smartphones
    To use data services, smartphone users must be on a monthly rate plan and purchase a data feature package. Data Pay Per Use is not available with smartphones on any GoPhone rate plan.
    It may be possible, but if they catch you, and they eventually will, they will shut charge you for it and/or shut down the account.

    Purchased an unlocked tmobile iphone 5 from swappa
    Upon a full restore in itunes with my AT&T gophone Sim in, I receive "congratulations your iphone has been unlocked" popup in itunes like normal.
    Then a few days later, the phone gets an "activation required" popup, I sign into wifi, it activates and all is well.
    Why is this happening?!
    It also happened previously, multiple times, when I had restored from a backup from a verizon iphone 4s. So this happens when restoring from backup and as new, fresh :-/
    Is my SIM bad? I've never really heard of that.
    Restored as new 2 nights ago, just received an activation popup just now, so it did perform 'better' than restoring from the backup.

    I don't believe so, no. The A1428 GSM that's being sold in the US now supports AT&T and T-Mobile, including LTE. AT&T or unlocked iPhone 5's sold in the US prior to when T-Mobile became a supported carrier will not work on thier "4G" network (not LTE). They will work on the Edge, 3G and LTE networks (where T-Mobile has compatible 3G coverage).
    The AT&T phone will never display a "3G" indicator. If it's connected to Edge, you will see "E". If it's connected to 3G, you will see "4G". If it's connected to an HSPA+ network, you will see "4G". T-Mobile's (non-LTE) 4G network is not compatible with the older iPhone 5's, but you will still see "4G" if you are connected to their 3G network while using a phone that was originally sold for AT&T in the US.

    If I've misstated something in there, I'm sure someone will come in and correct me. There was a lot of confusion when T-Mo went live as a supported carrier. Personally, it didn't matter much to me as T-Mobile has such lousy coverage in my experience, that I would never consider them as an option.
