Unlocking iPhone 5 at the end of my 24 Month Contract?

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but I've been a little thrown by the information provided by my network (eMobile Ireland)
My 24 month contract on my iPhone 5 comes to an end in the next couple of weeks, I contacted my network yesterday to ask about unlocking it so a family member can have the handset & changing my tariff etc.
They advised me I am now eligible for the device to be unlock from the network, took my IMEI and processed the request,
The email I've received this morning has confused me a little.... (I'll highlight my query)
"We have received your iPhone unlocking request and your phone will be remotely unlocked within the next 10 working days. In order to fully unlock the phone you will need to follow the below steps after 10 working days:
1. Place the SIM card of the new operator you wish to move to into the iPhone.
2. The iPhone will then 'Brick' (a security feature) and will require a connection to iTunes to perform a 'Customer Restore'.
3. iTunes will detect the IMEI of the device and search for updates (this normal and is performed every time the iPhone is connected to iTunes).
4. iTunes will detected the new SIM and that the 'Unlock Key' is available. It will then deploy the Unlock Key to the device.
5. From here, the iPhone (still connected to iTunes) will perform the standard un-brick process which includes:
i. Check for latest Software update
ii. Perform a customer restore (SYNC)
During this process, your iPhone will detect the SIM of a new network operator and iTunes will deploy the necessary 'Carrier Bundle' to the phone. This contains the correct settings for the new network operator, which also includes the operators' 'Network Lock'.
This means that your iPhone will then become locked to the new network.
Once the syncing is complete your phone is now ready for use with another network operator.
If you need to unlock your iPhone again you will need to contact the network operator the phone is now locked to. You can find this information by going to settings > General > About and beside 'Carrier' the network operator will be displayed.
I hope you find this information useful.
Kind Regards,
The  eMobile Team"
Whenever I've had a handset unlocked in the past, it didn't relock when I used a new sim from a different network, is this really what happens or just some misinformation?
If so is this the case if I use an existing sim card such as the one from work phone or a Pay As You Go sim card?
Any further info or personal experiences would be hugely appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Bobby H.

I recently unlocked my iPhone 5s & it didn't quite follow the instructions provided by the network, all I had to do is insert the SIM from a different operator & connect to iTunes & all was fine; no congratulations message saying the phone was now unlocked nor any saying the SIM was invalid, it didn't lock to the new network.
To be sure I checked on Apple's site & it worked as they said rather than how my provider said.

I wouldn't even take a chance at getting it serviced in the US.
If you did happen to find a store willing to service it under warranty, they would most likely replace the device. That means you would end up with a US iPhone locked to AT&T.
Do you really want to run that risk?
Take the device to the country of origin and have it serviced there.

  • Using a microsim in an unlocked iPhone in the US

I'm looking to find a way of using an unlocked iPhone in the US. However, none of the providers in the US that I've spoken to offer a microsim-only deal. Has anyone managed to use a non-US iPhone 4S in the US on a US provider?

T-Mobile sells micro sims...your only other choice is AT&T.

Here's an interesting bit: iTunes will let me restore my iPod touch from backup: it's still running iOS 4.3.3. I figured as much... there's backups showing in the Preferences -> Devices list for both devices (and even my old, long gone iPod touch 2G), but my iPhone (on iOS5) isn't giving me any such option. I remember I had to downgrade before to get the backup restored (something went haywire in the setup assistant, and I couldn't restore a backup from iTunes there)... If it was possible to go to iOS 5.0 rather than 5.0.1 I would just do the same thing again, but iOS 5.0.1 isn't an option. I attached a screenshot. Hopefully Apple can get this nonsense sorted out; I think iOS 5 might be the root of this, somehow.

Error -1 generally indicates a hardware failure.Your phone's broken.  Buy a new phone, replace the phone through Apple or an authorised service provider, or find a 3rd party repair shop to attempt to fix it.

  • Can I replace my iPhone if the ends are cracked?

Can I replace my iPhone if the ends are cracked?

Of course it can be replaced..... if the device needs replacement because of a manufacturing issue and is still under warranty it will be replaced at no cost.
If there is user damage (which is what it sounds like) or the device is out of warranty, Apple offers Out of Warranty replacements.  In the US the costs are $199 for the 4S and $149 for older models.

  • I plan to buy an iphone 6 from New York. I am from India and shall be using the phone in India. Is it possible to get an unlocked iphone from the store? If yes, how much would it cost?

It is going to be months before any unlocked iPhone 6s will be available.
Also be aware that the iPhone purchased in the USA will only have warranty service in the USA. Any warranty service will require you to bring it back to USA.

  • If I buy an unlocked iphone from the usa, will it be compatable in the uk?

I would like to buy an Iphone from the USA but am concerned that I will not be able to use it in the UK. Can anyone confirm if this is possible and if there is anything I will need to do?

The officially unlocked GSM version will work fine. But why on earth do you want to do this? The iPhone warranty is not a true international warranty, thus you most likely won't have any warranty & support in the UK for a US purchased iPhone. Not to mention you can purchase officially unlocked iPhones in the UK. Your money, do what you want.

    Complete rubbish
    Apple do not lock iPhones
Carriers do because they have subsidised the purchase price
and therefore only the carrier can unlock an iPhone
Orange have decided to apply 6 months to protect their revenue
they never have been the fastest to unlock

  • Can I purchase an unlocked iPhone in the US and use it in Malta?

    Hi all
I'll be visiting NYC in the coming months and I would love to own an iPhone 4s! I am interested in buying an unlocked iPhone 4s from an authorised Apple store in NYC as the current prices in my country, Malta for an iPhone 4s is $800 with one of our service providers and its quite expensive :/.  Would I have any problems if I use my local SIM card on it in Malta?

The only issue you need to be aware of is warranty/support. Yours will only be valid in the US. Any issues, and you'll have to figure out how to physically return the phone, to the US, for all warranty issues...you can't mail it back.
1 reason too buy apple product's ! its didnt get any hardware issue Normally !

  • What is the best plan for an unlocked iPhone in the US?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I am thinking of buying a no-contract unlocked iPhone from Apple.
I currently have a no-contract iPhone 4s on Virgin Mobile (USA). My plan is 30$ for 300 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited data. Since VirginMobile is CDMA, I'm guessing they don't unlock their iPhones or let other SIM cards work on the iPhones issued through them (this is assuming the 4s has the GSM capability).
I want a no-contract unlocked iPhone just so I will have the flexiblity of using it overseas since I'm usually making a trip once a year.
    My questions are:
If I buy an unlocked iPhone from Apple (thinking of getting a 5S, 32 GB in white and silver), are there any plans that I can use that are as cheap as VirginMobile's?
I have heard that Verizon iPhones come unlocked (although they have to be activated through Verizon, but a T-Mobile sim can be used and so on). Is this true? Are AT&T iPhones the same?
Will I be able to keep my current cellphone number from Virgin if I switch to a no-contract iPhone and start using a SIM card?
    Thanks!

    Thanks, Meg.
So would a Verizon device-only iPhone 5S still be the better choice if I plan to use GSM in the US (and not the CDMA part of the Verizon iPhone which would lock me to their service).
Ideally, if I had the device in my hand, I would like to use TMobile's prepaid plan (40$ for unlimited talk, text, and 500 mb of data). Upon getting the phone, couldn't I just discard the included verizon simcard (without my activation) and just pop in the TMobile SIM card since the Verizon device-only instrument comes with the GSM unlocked? ( In other words, I don't have to ask Verizon to unlock the GSM part of the iPhone 5S )
Also, if this is what my goal is (to use a prepaid Tmobile sim), I could just buy an unlocked sim-free iPhone 5S from Apple, right? I dont have to ask for a Verizon device-only iPhone 5S if I want nothing to do with Verizon or use their CDMA service? I'm guessing a device-only iPhone 5s (regardless of carrier label) is the same as unlocked sim-free iphone 5S?

  • Can I use an unlocked iPhone in the US

Last year, I bought an unlocked iPhone, so I could use it in Brazil. This year I am moving to the States and would like to keep my phone - what should I do?
    Thanks!

Nothing.  When you move to the US, you can sign up for service with any GSM carrier.  One you sign up for an account you will be provided with the appropriate SIM for your phone.

  • Impossible to unlock iphone if the device I synced with is now broken?????

I have a locked iPhone and the laptop I originally set it up with is now broken and has no Internet access. I can't work out how to restore my phone to unlock it, I have tried using an iPad or MacBook but says I can't do that until the phone is unlocked as it is not the original device I synced with.

Not sure what the problem is here.  Have you forgotten your unlock code? Are you trying to restore your phone from iTunes?  Just trying to get some details here.
And if your laptop is broken does that mean that you cannot turn your laptop on?  Or just no internet access?
If the laptop still works without internet you should be able to start iTunes and connect the phone to it using the sync cable.
Please give us some more details.
