Unlocking iPhone 5 for Canada

I am from Canada and my Samsung Galaxy S5 has recently broke. I was going to get my boyfriend to bring me his Verizon iPhone 5 to use and just get it unlocked. Does anyone know a) if it even needs to be unlocked.. a lot of what I am reading is that they already come unlocked and b) if it does need to be unlocked how do I get him to do that?

It is already unlocked.

  • Factory Unlocked iPhone 4 from Canada not working overseas

Hi all, I'm looking for help.
I purchased a Factory unlocked iPhone 4 in Canada for the purpose of selling it on eBay (to help offset the cost of my own iPhone 4 purchase). It was purchased from an Apple Store in Toronto.
The buyer is in Ireland, he got the phone, put in his 02 micro-sim and gets the following message: "The SIM Card inserted in this phone does not appear to be supported." He has 2 micro-sim cards and both did not work.
Has anyone encountered anything like this? Are there limitations to how unlocked these phones truly are? Any advice or thoughts on a solution?
Any help would be appreciated, I've called the Apple support many times, and they tend to not be very aware of how their own factory unlocked phones work.

This is how I Think it works in canada for the iPhone 4 Factory Unlocked this info is from the apple web site about the I phone 4 is Factory Unlocked only from the Apple web store online only I think.
this is the info that I copied from the Apple web store site I hope this helps you.
Here is a link to the info on the Apple Store Canada web Site

    Buy your iPhone from
Apple commitment-free.
It works with the carrier of your choice.
_*Buy your iPhone from the Apple Online Store*_
_*and choose your own GSM carrier.*_ *_You can change carriers at any time._*
    It’s easy to set up.
Get a compatible SIM (iPhone 3GS) or micro-SIM card (iPhone 4) and select a plan from the carrier of your choice. Then insert the card and set up your iPhone using iTunes on your Mac or PC. With a few clicks, you can start making calls.
    It works internationally.
Because this iPhone is commitment-free, you can purchase a micro-SIM or SIM card and service from a local carrier at your destination. Or check with your home carrier regarding international roaming charges.

    Yes.
Insert the SIM card and power the iPhone on to find out. Nothing bad can happen if you can't and if you can't for some reason, connect the iPhone to iTunes.

  • Where can I buy an unlocked iphone 3gs in Canada?

I will go to the other countries in future for business so i wonder if I can buy an unlocked iphone which can be used by inserting SIM card directly since locked iphone can't be used in the other countries? Or can I get offical tech unlocking for my iphone so that it can work in the other countries? Thanks for reply.

Officially unlocked iPhones are not sold in Canada. You could buy one in a country where they are sold unlocked, then use it in Canada with a Fido or Rogers SIM. The countries that sell them unlocked are listed here:
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937>
It may not be easy to buy, though, as they may require a local address, or payment with a debit or credit card issued in their country. Also, the warrantee is valid only in the country of sale. Even if you do get an unlocked iPhone, it may be difficult to get a local SIM in some countries (such as Japan or Korea). Things are easier if you know a resident of the country who is willing to buy the phone or SIM for you.
You can use a locked Canadian iPhone in other countries but they charge high roaming fees for voice, and exorbitant roaming fees for data. Data roaming can be disabled in "Settings" > "General" > "Network".
Fido and Rogers have some international plans that will reduce roaming fees a bit. Check with them before you leave.

  • Can I buy an unlocked iPhone 4S in Canada and use it in Mexico?

    Hi!
I'm currently in Canada but I'll be traveling back to Mexico in a few days, but I just wanted to know if I can use an unlocked iPhone 4S in mexico with carriers like Telcel, Iusacell and Movistar. It's urgent
    Thanks

You can pay full retail now and then unlock with Verizon's permission later. It's only for international use if it's like the 4s. Only atat has unlocked phones from apple because it's gsm not CDMA. Is straight talk gsm or is it CDMA?  I am not an expert.

  • Will AT&T or Apple unlock iPhone 4 for non customers (bought for no commitment price)

I wanted toraise  a request to unlock an iPhone with AT&T bought at a no commitment price (full price) though locked to AT&T and never used AT&T services (read; not a customer).
When I contacted AT&T to unlock this phone, I was told to contact Apple since AT&T was not taking up such requests from non customers. Also the AT&T policy states that they will unlock phones bought for no commitment price.
Can someone clarify whom to contact to raise the request? Is Apple in a position to identify no commitment price devices and unlock them?
If Apple can help, how do I approach them?

    Hi modular,
I guess you have not read my earlier threads completely, I received the approval and it did not work. I was in constant touch with AT&T on the case when they suddenly changed their policy and told me what is mentioned above.
I am not being wishful. I was told by AT&T earlier that my Phone was eligible and the earlier approval was some error from their side and would be corrected. If somebody is wasting everybody's time it is this change in policy by AT&T and their comments to contact Apple and whosoever. It is a developing situation and really bad in part of large corporations to walk back on their promise. I'm just seeking clarification on the current situation.
Lastly I think this is a forum to request for help from the community and if you feel time is being wasted do not read the threads or comment, I have provided enough tags and an appropriate subject line for you to ignore this thread. Either be emphatic to people's problem or do not comment.

  • Can I exchange an unlocked iPhone 5S for one with Sprint?

    Hi Everyone!
I would really appreciate if all of you could help me out with a concern I have.
I just bought an unlocked iPhone 5S ($649) online and received it today at my house. But I wasn't aware at all that unlocked phones (GSM) don't work with Sprint because of their network (CDMA). Till I started researching this I knew that this was going to be troublesome. Right now I have a 2 year contract with Sprint with an iPhone 4S (Still have 1 year left) so I can't just break the contract and switch to either T-Mobile or AT&T so that's not an option for me and I can't use the unlocked iPhone because of its network.
What I would like to know is if there's a way I can go to an Apple store and exchange the unlocked iPhone for a Sprint iPhone 5S? (it doesn't matter if they don't return any money to me since it's not an unlocked iPhone). I hope so because I really spent a lot of money on this phone and I really like it but I don't know if Apple can do these kind of things. I'm pretty sure I'm not the first one who has encountered this problem before.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi OrangeMarlin,
Thanks for the help. It helped me out a lot. I was able to exchange the iphone for one with Sprint but now I have to wait like a whole month to receive it again but well it's better than having nothing right? lol!
    Thanks again!

  • Why is there no unlocked Iphone 5s for sale?

I want to buy an iphone 5s but I dont see any unlocked iphone 5s in the website just the tmobile no contract but i dont want that.

  • Does itunes work in an unlocked iphone 4s for tmobile

I have an ipad and ipod touch and I want to buy an iphone but I have a contract with T-mobile. If I buy an unlocked iphone 4s and use it in T-mobile would itunes and siri still work?

iTunes and your apps will work on an unlocked phone. However, since T-Mobile in the US is not a supported carrier, not all functions will work with the phone. Some things are not supported that require carrier support, such as Visual Voicemail. You also have some restrictions on the speed of their network. Hope that helps.

  • How to unlock iPhone 4S for use in Norway...

I've been researching various wifi and/or calling options while we are in Norway for a couple weeks.  My husband and I each have an iPhone 4S's....our service is through Verizon.....but we'll probably only try and convert one phone.   I've learned I can call Verizon and they'll unlock the phone, then I can insert a mini SIM I buy in Norway.  Also, I'm familiar with how to open the SIM tray, etc.
BUT that's where I get lost.  Although the Internet is full of how-to videos and websites, I'm not finding clear cut answers.  I'll list my questions below in hopes than one of you out there can answer some or all of them.
1).  Once unlocked, what happens to my stored information with Verizon?  IE:  Contact list, past voicemails and texts?  I realize they won't show up with a foreign SIM card, but will the old information be wiped clean or still on the Verizon SIM card when I get back to the states and re-insert it back into the iPhone?
    2)  Can I actually reinsert the original Verizon Sim card back into the phone when I get home then simply call Verizon to re-activate my service again?
    3)  When buying a SIM card in Norway, what am I looking for?  (other than a mini card)....But what phone company is good.....what type of service?  HOw does it all work.  Will it give me wifi....or simply 3G or some other connection for calling the United States.  This is where I get lost.  I simply don't understand how cell phones work and how much we should expect to pay per minute.
    4)  Can we text using a Norwegian SIM card in an American iPhone 4S?
    5)  What telephone number is used when people back home try to call us....and do they pay anything?  We certainly don't want our loved ones paying to contact us!
I think that's it for now....
    HELP anyone?
    Thanks,
    Sheree
Feel free to reply directly to my email:  [email protected] I'll probably forget how I got to this forum and therefore never read your wonderful replies!

    1) the new sim card does not wipe the phone clean, just changes the service. Your contacts, etc... I would think are still there. Voicemail may be a different story since with the different sim, you would have a new phone number.
2)Your Verizon service has not been de-activated by replacing the sim card with 1 from Norway. You should just be able to re-insert your Verizon sim when you get home and everything will be normal.
4)Yes, but it will be from the Norwegian number associated with your new card. You will be paying international rates to text to the US.
5)The sim you purchase in Norway will have its own number associated with it. They would have to call THAT number to reach your phone when that SIM is installed. Yes, they will be paying international rates when they call you and you would be paying international rates when you call them.
I agree with rcschnoor comments in the main, just not sure about 1.   Many pure GSM phones store all contacts on the SIM card (so they go with you when you move the SIM to another phone), potentially with an option to store on the phone, whereas Verizon phones without a SIM card store contacts on the phone (as there is no alternative!).  Probably the iPhone 4 stores on the phone.  But in either case, once you put the Verizon sim back in, your contacts will be there.
The other point about 4 and 5: yes, you will pay international rates, but with a good SIM these can be very cheap.  (e.g. 6 cents a min from UK to US, versus Verizon's rates of $1.19 per min, don't know about Norway.)
Also, there is cost/convenience trade off:
    1) You can activate your Verizon/Vodaphone SIM:  This is the most expensive option, but allows you to keep your old number.  Friends can call you as they do now.
    2) You can buy a local SIM.  This is the cheapest option, you will get a new number that you will need to communicate to people, and they will pay to call you.  You also need to purchase it there, which may or may not be a hassle!
    3) You can buy a local SIM before you leave, from a company such as: http://www.onesimcard.com/cell-phone-rates/norway/
This is more expensive that 2, but you a) have a number before you leave, b) you don't need to buy it after a long plane ride in a foreign country, and c) these services allow you to select a US number for your friends to call so no extra charges for them, and some services allow you to forward your current number, so for your callers nothing changes.  Also you can see all the costs, instead of trying to work out what to get when you are at a store in Norway!
That said, I always go with option 2, but your weighting might be different.  The page I gave indicates some of the major carriers, you have to decide how much calling and data you will be using, and for two weeks only you probably want a pay as you go option rather than any longer contract.
    Hope that helps.

  • Unlocking Iphone 5 for resell?

Do I need to go into a store to get my iPhone 5 (not 5c or 5s) unlocked?

Verizon iPhone 5, 5S, 5C, 6, and 6 Plus are all unlocked when sold. No unlocking necessary.  Just stick in a new SIM.  Only exception is you can not use on Sprint.
THe 5 does not have all the LTE bands for other carriers, so you may not get LTE where expected.  However it has all the GSM bands and will get HSPA +
