Unlocking 'locked' PDF files

I have a PDF sent to me that is locked. I want to be able to make notes on it on my iPad and send it back. Currently I am printing off the PDF document, making the notes with a pen, scanning them and sending the scanned copy back via e-mail. I've seen a number of iPad apps that allow me to make annotations on PDF files, but unfortuntely the PDF files I get sent to me are locked. Is there any way I can 'unlock' it and make annotations on it using some of these apps. (I am looking at getting iAnnotate for iPad). Any suggestions?

I gather from the Forum that there is no way to recover the password. To create an unprotected file you would need the password.

Preview issue working with a locked PDF file

I am able to open and view a locked PDF file using the Preview application. Unfortunately, searching does not work within the locked PDF. Opening this locked PDF in Adobe reader does allow searching to work.
Does anyone know why Preview cannot search a locked PDF even though it does appear to open successfully?

Preview with Snow Leopard is very different.
If searching is critical to your workflow, best to move to Acrobat.

Batch lock PDF files

We mostly have Acrobat 9 or X standard licenses and few Pro 9. What I'm looking for is the ability to batch lock PDF files before we post them to consultants or partners.
I know you can lock each PDF via Standard. Pro gives you the ability to batch do it but it makes no sense to upgrade 40 licenses just for that feature. Last resort option would be to create multipage PDFs and lock that vs. the individual but I'd like the ability to do the individual.
The files are being locked down to print at 150dpi only. That way the PDF's can't be imported into Illustrator and saved out to a CAD file.

BO XI 3.1 - scheduling fails for locked PDF files

Hi,
I have scheduled reports in BO XI 3.1 and instances are stored as PDF files on the BO server.
Issue I am facing : During the schedule time (daily morning), if the PDF file has been kept open by some user, the schedule fails saying the file is locked by someone else.
I am thinking of writing some scripts (.bat file) to kill the session (file open by the user) and on success of this script the BO scheduler runs.
But am wondering if there is anything in CMC/ Infoview where in we can restrict the access levels to just read and not write to the users ?

adding place holders to give different name to the PDF file is ruled out , as the users want the same name and only one copy of the file should be present at a particular time.

If we use a bat file to copy the file to another location (viewing location), the file can be overwritten in the original location but the bat file can not overwrite the PDF in viewing location (if the PDF is opened, during the file copy from original folder to viewing folder)
PDF files are stored in the BOBJ repository
Any other options ?

As of now we are making the file as "Read Only" by calling the class/Method CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>FILE_SET_ATTRIBUTES, but still u can save a copy of the file, Looking into other possibilities either to disable or to have a password for the PDF, Will let u know if we crack something.

If you encrypted the files yourself, open them in Preview and select
File > Export
from the menu bar. Choose PDF as the Format and don't check the Encrypt box.

Im reposting this because someone obviously deleted the original post for some odd reason I don't know how. Going back to what GKaiseril mentioned, so whats the best way to secure a viewable pdf file such that it can't be opened by places like pdfunlock and apps such as inkscape and so on?

It looks like it was moved because of the subject matter (bypassing security). PDF consumers are expected to respect any security restrictions present in a document. If you don't specify a document open password, the document contents can be decrypted without needing to know the password. This is no secret. If you use a document open password of sufficient strength and a high encryption level (e.g., one of the AES types), it will be very difficult to defeat.

Locked PDF files will not open with user name and password. Help?

I go to school online and our eBooks are in pdf format. I download them to my MacBook so that I can read them offline. When I download them, they open as they always did but, when I put my username and password in to unlock them, it tells me something about the file is edited and a copy will be saved but, it never opens the file. Not using netwok magic. I shut it down when it comes up. I have tried using 192.168.1.1 but still will not accept user name and password. I never changed the factory default and it just continues to ask for the user name and password. Web utility site will not come up. I have a wired desktop as my main computer and that is the computer I have been trying to access the utility from.

Did you add document restrictions or an "Open Password" protection to your PDF documents? When you add any of document security features to a PDF document, it will be encrypted.
Currently, Adobe Reader mobile products do not support adding annotations to encrypted PDF documents or filling out encrypted PDF forms, for example.
To check whether your PDF document is encrypted
Open your PDF document in the desktop version of Adobe Reader or Acrobat Pro.
Select File > Properties... from the menu. (Or press Command+D for Mac, Control+D for Windows.)
Select the Security Tab.
Click the Show Details... button (if enabled).
Check the last entry in the Document Security dialog.
If this is not the case, please send one of your PDF documents to [email protected] and include the link to this forum post (https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1593031) in your email message for reference.
We will inspect the PDF document and diagnose the cause of the problem. Thank you.
