Unlocking Password to edit PDF Problem

Good day,
We have a problem with unsecuring our documents so that we can edit it. Example: We create a document for a client and use our action or security options so that the client can't edit the document. We noticed that a minor correction needs to be made. We have tried to unlock the password with putting in our security password and it just will not do it. I decided to put on my trouble shooting hat on and then, I noticed that it would sometimes work with just putting in "no security" and save. Now, talk about thinking you've gone crazy. But, my boss saw me do this two times and it became unsecure and then it decided not to unlock at all. I took a snapshot of the problem. Please review this screen shot. BTW, this happens to my co-workers as well.
Help!
Thanks,
Pbologna2821

I did check and we did have a unicode. I removed it and now, you can unlock the security without putting in the security password. So, checked on Google and saw other people reported this issue. So, now we have a new issue.
Thanks for your input.

  • "unlocking" a once editable PDF

I distribute an editable PDF application form. About 90% of the forms come back to me in a state that is still editable and I can easily export the data and merge it into a spreadsheet. About 10% come back as "locked" and no longer able to be edited. It is obvious that some users have confusedly used the "Typewriter" tool to complete the form (which I am assuming is a hopeless case), but others have typed in the fields properly and then "locked" the form somehow and I cannot extract the data. Is there any way I can revert those forms to their original editable state? This problem is extremely frustrating and results in me wasting a lot of time manually extracting the information from the PDF.

Thank you for your reply. I can't actually post a sample because the files are application forms, but I could email one. Where should I send it?
I think I was wrong about my assumption of some applicants using the Typerwriter tool, because all of these problem documents so far say that that they do not have comments. With Preview (Mac), I can see that a document has actualled been "locked," but "unlocking" it does not really do anything.

  • About preview edits PDF problem? Please help!

When I fill some forms and do the checks on PDF file using preview, it shows like this.
Anyone knows why? it doesn't like check or X? or if anyone knows any good PDF editor? Please help!

Your Preview is putting both a checkmark and an X into the checkbox. My Preview only puts a checkmark. I can't see where you can specify either one or the other (X or checkmark) in Preview on my Yosemite 10.10.1 with Preview version 8.0. Did you do something to enable "X" rather than checkmark?
What version of OS X and Preview are you using?
I use an app called PDFpenPro to do this sort of thing with usually (fill out forms and editing PDF files) and it also only puts checkmarks into the checkboxes.

  • I cannot seem to edit PDF files on Adobe Acrobat as it says the files are protected and I need to enter a Permissions Password?

I cannot seem to edit PDF files on Adobe Acrobat as it says the files are protected and I need to enter a Permissions Password?

If the files have a permissions password, you need to know it, and remove security, before you can edit the files. That is correct.

  • Linked PDF with Open Doc password- false, Edit Permissions- true, requires password to open AI doc

I would like to password protect editing of a placed PDF. I have set the PDF Open Doc password to false and the Edit permissions to true. Illustrator still requires the permissions password to OPEN the Illustrator document. This would defeat the purpose, no?

Well, it does seem to work, sort of. The Illustrator document with a placed, protected PDF asks for the password when opening. The password is also required when attempting to embed (edit) the linked PDF, as expected.
I would think the correct behavior should be  for the Open Document password protection (or lack of) to control opening the Illustrator document and the Edit Permissions password to be applied when embedding or flattening the linked PDF, making it accessable to editing. Acrobat seems to be able to make this distinction.
This would be a significant feature for users who need to restrict editing of sensitive portions of their layouts while allowing necessary prepress work downstream.

  • Problems with editable PDFs

I have created an editable PDF that I want to send clients, have them fill information in, then save and email back to me.
This works on my machine but when I send it out, people cannot save it. They can only save a blank version.
I have extended the features already. Could the problem be something to do with versions? Do they need to download a newer version of Reader?
    Any help much appreciated! Thanks

By extended reader rights do you mean Save As > Reader Exteded PDF > Enable Additional Features YES I did this Here is a link to some PDFs with this problem http://www.wkrause.com/new/

ipad password is giving me problems, works on wallpaper to unlock but does not work on reset or restrictions

You can try to remember or get the passcode somehow. If not, the only other option is to wipe the device clean and restore it to factory settings.
Follow the instructions in  iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 to restore the device to factory settings.
Once you have setup the device as a new one, you can then sync it back with your iTunes account and all your music, apps, contacts and any other content sync'ed with iTunes will be loaded on the device. Any content that is stored only on the device and not sync'ed with iTunes, like app logins or data, will be lost during this process. Be forewarned that this is a long process and can take a couple of hours or more to complete. This can be painful, but it is necessarily so to prevent users from working around the security settings. After the restore is complete, you can setup a new Restrictions passcode. Make a note of the passcode to avoid this situation in future.

  • Problem with editable pdf's from mac to pc

I created an editable pdf document with Adobe Acrobat Pro.  Users on a mac typed in the document and saved it and that all worked fine.  Then they tried to open on a pc and the document was blank.  Has anyone experienced this or have a suggestion?

It sounds like they used Apple's Preview to fill in the forms.  If that's the case, what you're seeing is expected behavior.  Preview doesn't handle form data properly.
I would suggest you ask your users to install Adobe Reader XI to ensure that form data is preserved when saving the PDF: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

  • Unlock password protected, reader extended document

    Hi,
I'm trying to unlock/remove password on a password protected and reader extended document in a long lived process. Below is the workflow description
A batch process that fires periodically to send service feedback forms to customers.
Long lived process to Gather data ---> Render Dynamic pdf ---> Password Protect (to disable printing and extracting pages) ---> Reader Extend (for saving edited pdf on client machine) ---> Send Email to customer.
Long lived process to Receive feedback via Email endpoint --> Remove/Unlock (?) password ---> Extract data from PDF --->  further operations to update data in tables.
    My findings:
Remove PDF Password Encryption (Failed here)  ---> Extract data
Error: ALC-ENC-100-005 You cannot change security on this document because the document is signed or certified or reader extended.: ALC-ENC-100-005 You cannot change security on this document because the document is signed or certified or reader extended.
Remove Usage Rights ---> Remove PDF Password Encryption ---> Extract data   == SUCCESS
Unlock Password Encrypted PDF ---->  Extract Data (Failed here)
Error: com.adobe.internal.pdftoolkit.core.exceptions.PDFSecurityAuthorizationException: Security Manager for decryption is not set: com.adobe.livecycle.formdataintegration.client.ExportFormDataException: com.adobe.internal.pdftoolkit.core.exceptions.PDFSecurityAuthorizationException: Security Manager for decryption is not set

I see that the "Unlock Passwod Encrypted PDF" service works fine in Short Lived Process. I'm unable to make it work in Long Lived process. Can someone please explain this behavior? Why is the limitation to Unlock PDF Password service to work only in short lived process?
    Thanks,
    Sandeep

    Sandeep,
Is your intention to remove the password encryption or just extract data from it?
If you want to remove password encryption then you should first remove the usage rights and then remove pass encryption
If you want to just extract data from it - You can create a short lived subprocess that has unlock PDF password and extract data which should work fine (Ensure that unlock and extract are in a short lived process)
In case of long lived process when you unlock PDF password - the PDf gets unlocked and will be saved - and if you try to extract data it would fail because you need to unlock it again.

  • Is it possible to save a non-editable PDF from InDesign CS6?

Wehave an issue with our printer and would like to start giving them files that are non editable. In Illustrator it's as simple as checking and unchecking a box in the PDF settings dialogue. I've tried multiple ways that I have across the net but they all are editable once opened in Illustrator for example. We would like to give them flattend/non-editable PDF. We would prefer not to use any passwords or security features.
Is there a way? Thanks for the help.

Are you worried that they are opening the PDF in Illustrator and might accidently edit or move/delete something?
All printers would have either Acrobat or Adobe Reader which is free, so there is no reason for them to open your PDFs in Illustrator.
Perhaps they are opening them in AI to correct problems in your PDFs. Ask them if there are any issues, it's possible your InDesign or PDF creation process is wrong for digital printing, (for example, Rich Black text that needs to be converted to 100 Black only, etc.)
Or maybe they are doing imposition.
However, opening PDFs in Illustrator is still not a good idea. Illustrator is NOT a general purpose PDF editor.
In Acrobat Pro there are Preflight Profiles and Fixups that may correct some issues.
PitStop Pro is a better choice for correcting issues in PDFs. And there are also third party Acrobat plug-ins for impostion purposes.
A RIP with software specifically designed for it will also help fix PDFs without resorting to Illustrator.
Since your printer is in-house, I suggest you have a meeting to ask if they are opening your PDFs in Illustrator and why they are doing so.
Perhaps some guidelines should be agreed upon by both sides and enforced by some rules.
I have a feeling that some additional training (possibly on both sides) is needed to straighten out this situation.

  • Acrobat 7.0 - Enable save an edited PDF

I have Acrobat 7.0 and have created an editable PDF that I would like others to fill in and save, even if they only have Reader. I have seen that you can do this with later versions of Acrobat by going to Advanced > Enable usage rights, but this doesn't seem to be there in the Acrobat 7.0 menu. Is the option located somewhere else? Is it not available in 7.0 at all? Your help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

You may want to download the EULA for AA9 from Adobe.com and be sure that enabling will not violate the EULA for your application. If it will, then upgrading will not solve your problem, but just get you into a legal hassle if you do use enabling. There is a 500 use limit with some variations and you need to read about the restrictions in terms of your use.

  • How do I add a password to a pdf that can later be removed by a person with only Adobe reader?

I have Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional and want to make a password on a pdf so it is safe until the other person gets it. I can make a password without a problem and when she goes to open it, the password is required, but it is not removed and the password stays on the pdf. How can I make the PDF with a password so that once she opens it using the password, she can then take off the protection of the PDF?
She only has Adobe Reader XI.
How can I make a PDF like this, or can I?
    Thanks for any help,
    Sean

Adobe Reader cannot change security options. There is nothing you can do, when creating the PDF, to change this.

  • Using Oracle "Import PDF" Extension in Open Office Draw to Edit pdf Files

I am a fairly new Mac user with OS X 10.6. For several months, I have been trying to find something which would edit pdf files better than Preview does (for example, the content of a text box in Preview can only be "center aligned"). Skim and FormulatePro were two options I tried that were improvements over Preview in many respects, but wouldn't let me paste an image onto my pdf (such as, for example, if I wanted to put my digital signature on a document).
Then, I "discovered" the Oracle PDF Import Extension which I had installed in Open Office months ago, but hadn't really used. By "discovered," I mean I read on somebody's blog that you could use Open Office Draw to edit pdf files and I thought, "Hey, I wonder if that would work with my setup." (Boy, do I feel stupid.)
I have just started using this functionality, but in just an hour or so of playing around, I have found that it has far exceeded my expectations and, even, my immediate needs. Besides giving you (a) all the control over text and text boxes that you would expect from, say, a word processing program and (b) allowing you to paste images onto your pdf, Open Office Draw also includes layers!
The layer function threw me off for a bit, because, at first, I kept finding that my attempts to edit the document resulted in grabbing the raster image and moving it "off" of the underlying text layer (a function, I will admit, that I think will be worth exploiting someday, but wasn't what I was looking for at the moment). Then, I discovered that you can "lock" the layer so as to prevent this annoying occurrence. To create your edits, simply create a new layer (call it "MyEdits" or whatever you want) and you're in business.
Anybody who has done anything more than drawn a couple of lines and boxes on a page has discovered that editing the overlapping objects can be a real pain - if not an outright impossibility. Separating these overlapping objects through the use of different layers solves the problem.
The only downside to the use of Open Office Draw as a pdf editing tool that I can see is that you must import the pdf, save your edits in odg format, and then export it to pdf when you're done. I know that we would all like to have the capability of doing everything I just described directly to the native document, but, hey, for all the functionality I have been searching the internet for weeks to find, I think it's a reasonable trade off.

    Try turning off protected mode.

  • I need to turn an indesign document into an editable pdf. how do I do that?

I need to turn an indesign document into an editable pdf, how do I do that?

InCopy is a solution, but it's not the only viable solution.
I update many books, from 200 pages to 3,200 pages every year, long document, very techincal tax books.
Some are done through InCopy, some are edited word files and rtfs exported from InDesign, some are marked up hard copies etc.
It totally depends on the clients technical ability with computers. Last year I taught over 30 authors of ours how to use InCopy. Some were receptive, some were dubious, some were totally clueless.
And on the dubious and totally clueless I spent more time troubleshooting their problems than I would normally with a Word/RTF option.
Some people are capable of switching to InCopy or even know how to use it in the first place. For anyone never used InDesign or InCopy before then it's a massive learning curve to jump from MS Word et al word processors, to InCopy.
I do agree, it is the best solution that's out there, technically. But that solution is not usable by a lot of people.
Yeh if the client is comfortable with InCopy then it's the way forward.
But in most cases, in my experience, it's faster and more efficient to Export the text as RTF and let the author update the RTF. That leaves you in control of reinserting the text and formatting it correctly. Rather than letting the client add bold, underline, italics, superscript, subscripts, crazy workarounds because they didn't know how to do it properly. And in the end you end up with 2 or 3 times the amount of work than is necessary, just cleaning up what the client has done in InCopy that does not suit the overall formatting of the publications.

How to password protect PDF documents or files?
Open the PDF file in Acrobat
Select File > Document Security from the menu
    Got to the u201CSecurity Optionsu201D drop-down and select u201CAcrobat Standard Securityu201D
Find the box labelled u201CPassword required to open documentu201D and place a check mark against it.
    Edit or type the password
You can also add a password requirement for changing permissions or password. To add a a required password check the box against u201Crequired password to change permissions or passwordu201D and enter the password. However note that this password must be different from the one that you entered for securing or password protecting the PDF file.
If you want your PDF document to be password accessible to users with previous versions of Acrobat Reader (versions earlier than 5.0), do not change the 40-bit encryption setting. However if your users or audience will be using version 5 or later versions of the Reader (or the full Acrobat program) then you may use 128-bit encryption.
