Unmountable external fire wire drive

Hello all!
I have a serious problem. I'v been reading these posts, but no luck with my issue.
I have a Maxtor 250GB external FireWire 1 hard drive with 3 partitions on it:
/dev/disk5
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: Applepartitionscheme *232.9 Gi disk5
1: Applepartitionmap 31.5 Ki disk5s1
2: Apple_Driver43 28.0 Ki disk5s2
3: Apple_Driver43 28.0 Ki disk5s3
4: AppleDriverATA 28.0 Ki disk5s4
5: AppleDriverATA 28.0 Ki disk5s5
6: Apple_FWDriver 256.0 Ki disk5s6
7: AppleDriverIOKit 256.0 Ki disk5s7
8: Apple_Patches 256.0 Ki disk5s8
9: Apple_HFS KEPEK (100) 100.0 Gi disk5s10
10: Apple_HFS ZENE (50) 50.0 Gi disk5s12
11: Apple_HFS DATA (80) 82.5 Gi disk5s14
I am not sure, what happened, but as of yesterday, this drive will not mount:
~ diskutil mountDisk /dev/disk5
One or more volume(s) failed to mount
I have tried to use DiskUtility, and the disk verification is OK on all partitions. I am, however, still unable to mount this drive.
I have successfully created a DiskImage using the DiskUtility, and I get the following error message when trying to mount the image:
Unable to attach "KEPEK (100)/dmg". (no mountable file systems)
Please, help me! I have a bunch of irreplaceable family photos on this drive, and I would like to recover them if it is possible.
All suggestions, advice, and help will be greatly appreciated!
THX all: Thot

Unable to attach "KEPEK (100)/dmg". (no mountable file systems)
This "bug" has surfaced elsewhere, and is within Leopard itself.
Trash the contents (not the folder) of System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches folder, and the System/Library/Extensions.mkext file. Empty the trash and restart.
It may take a few moments longer to reach the desktop, as the files will be regenerated. This should allow you to mount the .dmg, and hopefully the external as well.

  • Can't exclude an external fire wire drive

well that is pretty much it, I can't exclude an external fire wire drive from the search of spotlight I even deleted the playlist file of spotlight had no effect.
it is a WD 320GB connected via Fire wire.
I don't want spotlight looking there because it slows down the whole thing plus I know exactly what is in there.
    any ideas?

    Gon
I had the same problem with an external drive that powers down when idle and then takes it's time waking up for a spotlight search, thus slowing down the normally instantaneous results. I was able to get it to "stick" in the Privacy Pane and would exclude results from it, but Spotlight still seemed to need to wake it up to know that it's not part of the search
You can also set (in Energy Prefs) not to power down drives when idle, but then you're stuck with loud fan/drive noise constantly if you have such a drive, (I had a TB lacie which can get loud with drive & fan running).
But since as you say it's a drive you rarely need to access and you know what's on it, why not just connect it when you need it. I moved data I use daily to my main drive and the external drive only holds iMovie projects, installers and assorted download junk that I rarely access.
Plus I freed an extra outlet on my UPS

  • Panther: Installation on Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB External Fire Wire Drive.

I am waiting on delivery of a Full Retail Version Panther 10.3 purchased on eBay to be installed on a Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB External FireWire drive.
Are these the steps I should take to format, partition, & properly install Panther on the external FW Drive?
I have updated my OS 9.2.2 with the latest Firmware Update Pbook 4.1.8.smi.
    1. Boot (Panther) from the install disk holding down the C key.
    2. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility from Panther.
    3. In Disk Utility select FireWire HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
    4. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
    5. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. This procedure will erase the contents of the entire External Fire Wire HDD. Select option to zero all data.
    6. Click OK. Click Erase.
*. After eFWD is erased. Is this when I will partition eFW Drive? I plan five (5) partitions: 1-10GB for back up of my internal HD, 1-20GB for OSX 10.3, 1-50GB for future OS, 1-100GB for Storage and the remainder GB for Storage.
    *. After eFWD is partitioned.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Clean Install on Partition for OSX 10.3.
    9. Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation on Partition for OSX 10.3.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Follow prompts and set up computer.
    12. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    13. Go online and download updates, or go to Software Update under the Apple Menu and update your OS.
14.???Transfer your User Folder from Previous Systems folder. I don’t see a User Folder in my present System Folder of OS9.2.2.
    15. Install on the Panther partition; MSOffice, Quicken, and TurboTax.
    16. Copy or Clone to the OS 9 partition my existing internal hard drive.
I hope all that is left is to enjoy.

Thank you for the correction and encouragement. I have changed the erase step to partition. This will be my first experience with partitioning and with OSX. After three weeks of research and discussion I am excited about using OSX and probably will change my strategy to doubling my internal HDD to 20MB, increase RAM to 512MB and install the Panther on the internal drive. If this is my goal, which OS should be put on the external FW drive first, if I want to boot OS 9 from the eFWd instead of the internal? I don’t know if Panther will open archived files produced with OS9 applications? That being the only need to have a working version of OS9. Thanks again for all the help from the discussion groups.

  • Desktop does not show external Fire Wire Drive Buslink model MFW60

Running iMac fully maxed out. Have Buslink FireWire external drive, model MFW60 1394a. Purchased an adaoter plag in to connect through new Fire Wire port in back of machine. Got the drive to spin up and showed up on desktop. Tried to move a file from IMac to the Buslink and the whole system locked up. Only choice was to turn off everything . After rebooting, no Buslink showed up on the desktop. Disk utility sees it but each time I try to repair disk or even verify the disk utility is "not responding" and I am forced into" Force quit " to stop the disk utility rtask. I do have a Fire WIre USB 2 T backup external which is working fine.
Any ideas or help on getting the buslink to show up on desk top?

On the off chance, turn off Time Mschine, & add thst drive to silly Spotlight's Privacy pane.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Leopard on external fire wire drive, advice needed

Recently internal HDD has failed, waiting for replacement however in the mean time purchased Lacie firewire HD and installed leopard. Works great but after a week HD gives up and cannot install/disk utility etc. from leopard cd. On my second drive now, will macbook run happily from firewire drive or are these drives not designed to be used in this way, a hard drive is a hard drive isn't it? leopard install disc seems a little fragile too or is it just me?

Thanks for reply, i have the shiny black one from UK Mac store (250GB), well HDD number two. It worked great for a week then it froze one day with iTunes like the internal drive did then just clicked and whirred no matter what i tried. In/out errors while formatting from Leopard install disc, would not allow partioning and came up with invalid node structure/ BS sub system which it tried to fix but just crashes out. However when tried at the store seemed to work ok but i could not get Leopard on there again after crash period. Perhaps it was a faulty drive? Mac store told me thay had not had returns though but i guess they would say that! I will say new drive is working now but honestly for how long?

  • Install OS 10.2.1 on Fire Wire Drive

If I purchase a Fire Wire Drive and cable, connect to my Pismo, can I install OSX 10.2.4 from a Software Install and Restore disk and use this drive for OSX activity? How should it be set up? Where can I find instructions for such a task?

Homer, welcome, yes you can, however, I would highly recommend using Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of your OS on a separate partition on that external.

  • Cloning to External Fire Wire HD

    Hello
I have a new iMac and have quickly gobbled up it's internal HD with digital video imports. I want to do two things. Get these files out of my internal HD, onto and external HD, but also use the external HD as a bootable clone. Can I use a new 1tb external fire wire HD for both?
I've read that if you use an application like Superduper to clone with, you sould leave the clone "untouched" to allow a clean version in the event of a main HD crash.
Does Superduper (or something similar) do regular updates of the clone, or do I need to do that myself?
What about the rest of the space on the external HD, can I use it to store reemes of digital video files, and digital pictures while awaiting editing and processing without compromising the clone of my HD, which I want available for a clone. Or is a cloned HD a sacred place reserved only for emergencies.
    Thanks
    Stinkball

I've had luck with Carbon Copy Cloner. Just make sure your external HD is partitioned using the GUID scheme. I think CCC takes care of synching things.
I'd partition the drive (if it's large enough) so your clone is the same size as the internal, and then use the rest of the drive as a separate volume.

  • Install Mac OS X from an External Fire WIre HD : PROBLEM!!!!

Hey guys, I have a MacBook and I wanted to re-install the Mac OS X software. My internal dvd drive doesn't seem to work anymore so I tried to install the OS on a partition of my fire wire drive, from my brother MacBook, no problem there. When I tried to boot my mac from the FireWire Drive, I wasn't able to install it to my computer. Now, the only way I can do anything is if I do it from the FW drive...
Is there anything I can do to solve to problem??

Were you able to boot your other computer from the FW drive? What did you put on the FW drive? Did you actually install OS X onto the FW drive?
If you installed OS X onto the FW drive and can boot the computer with it, then just clone it to your other computer. See the following:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal drive on the computer mounted in TDM.
Source means the external FW drive.
If you can connect both computers by FW, then you could actually clone the system from the working computer to the one with the bad optical drive using the above procedure. Destination would be the computer with the bad optical drive booted into TDM. Source is the good computer that you boot normally.

  • Photoshop 7 will not recognize my fire wire drives as scratch disks

Photoshop 7 will not recognize my fire wire drives as scratch disks.
Using Photosop 7.0.1 & Mac OS X Tiger on G4 Tower with AGP Graphics.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

The drives need to be formatted as Macintosh HFS+ Extended (not Windows or FAT32, for instance), and you must have full read/write permissions to them.
Otherwise, Photoshop will not let you select them as scratch disk drives.  Of course, formatting will completely erase the entire drive, so if you have anything on them you need to keep, you'll need to back it up first.
If necessary, do a Get Info (Command I) on the icon of the drive in the Finder and check "Ignore Ownership on this drive"; but first the drive needs to be formatted as Macintosh Extended.

  • Unable to mount external fire-wire hard drive - help, please!

After working the last couple of days to resolve the failure of an internal drive, now one of my external drives (LaCie fire-wire) will not mount. I was using it to back up the bad internal drive, and probably forgot to eject the drive before turning it off; don't know if this really makes any difference, but just in case...
If I use Disk Utility I can see the LaCie drive, but it will not mount.
When I tried to verify the drive got the following message -
    Invalid sibling link
The volume LaCie HD needs to be repaired
1 HFS volume checked - volume needs repair
Next I tried to repair the drive, and was told -
    Invalid sibling link
    Volume check failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
This is where I stopped. I read another post somewhere in the forums about making a disk image of the drive, but I'm afraid of making things worse by proceeding without knowing what I'm doing. Any ideas on how I can somehow retrieve the data in the LaCie drive?
Once again, thanks in advance for any help!

Hi! Diskwarrior is always better at repairing drive directories which constitute 99% of all drive problems. I run it fairly regularly usually once a month. BUT I always run it at the first sign of weirdness or problems AND every time I have had a power failure or a forced restart or shutdown because those events usually always damage the drive's directory. Often even though the directory is damaged OSX can go ahead and mount it and it will work ok but eventually the damage builds every time one of those events occur and finally there is a failure to mount or boot. • External fire wire hard drive sleep trouble

I have two Seagate fire wire external hard drives. One is a 200 gig, the other a 300 gig. Both drives were working fine untill I think the last OS 10.4.2 update. Anyway, after my Imac wakes from sleep, when Finder calls up one of the external hard drives, finder hangs up with the color spinning wheel. Also, if Itunes calls up the disk for a song, it will hang also. I have to reboot. The drives will not return from their sleep state, I guess. My USB Maxtor external 300 gig drive works fine, but it does not seem to power down like it once did. Any ideas how to fix this? I had to just turn off the firewire drives. I do keep an Ipod attached via firewire, and it works fine.

Sounds like you need to run the repair option in Disk Utility on the 2 firewire drives, see if that fixes the problem.
You may need to run repair 2 -3 times just to make sure.

  • External fire wire

i buy a external hard drive (macgally 320g),firewire/ usb 2.0, the thing is when i connect from the fire wire connection it doesnt appear in the computer, it only connect by usb port ,and i put final cut in the external hardrive but when i capture from the camera it says that i have only 10 g (refering to my internal computer), how can i use the external memory to do videos?
    thanks

I don't have Final Cut but it is typical of almost any program on the Mac that you can specify a path to save a file, meaning you can save your data to any volume or folder on a volume of your choosing. Are you sure you have not just missed this setting for Final Cut somewhere?

  • How to change from ext fire wire drive to Time Capsule retaining all data?

When I first got my new MacBook Pro I used an external FW 800 drive for my Time Machine back-ups. I have now got myself a ITB TC and would like to use that now for Time Machine. Can I copy what was on the external FW 800 to the new TC and continue backing up from where I was?
I have seen mention of using Restore in Disk Utility but that would rename the TC hard drive as far as I can see. Also there was mention of using CCC to clone the original drive I was using onto the TC hard drive. I was hoping there was a simple solution?

    Hi Buzzsaw138,
Since posting, have the phones been activated and has your issue been resolved? I would still like to ask a couple of questions.
When you changed devices, did you keep the same phone numbers?
Do your old devices still work as prepaid lines?
If you still need assistance, please feel free to send me a PM with your name and contact information (wireless phone numbers as well). I will be happy to contact you in order to review and resolve this for you.
    Thanks!

  • Fire Wire Drive not listed Device

There have been several similar unresolved related posts. So I'll launch in to this anew.
Powered up the Mac this evening, and my two external F/W drives did not appear on the desk top. They did not appear in the Device menu. All Cables and Power connections are correct. No recent changes Hardware of Software.
They do appear as Mounted drives when checked with Disk Utility. They Verify on problem.
The Drives seem to have been set to "Hidden" and I can not make them go back to normal. I was able to create an alias via the Finder/go/folders/volumes. But I don't want an Alias, I want my drives set back to normal.
    What should I try folks?
