Unmounting SD card makes the Finder slow.

I've noticed that since moving to an Intel machine, unmounting an SD card from an external card reader renders the Finder slow in one particular area - when clicking on any of the icons on the Finder's side bar (both the drives above the horizontal divider, and the favourites below) it will take about ten seconds for the contents of the window to update. A reboot will clear this behaviour, but simply re-starting the Finder will not.
Does this happen to anybody else? If not, perhaps the problem is with my card reader (a cheap "Flash Gear" unit), although this didn't use to happen on my old PowerMac.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO RECOGNIZE AND IMPORT MTS FILES. (No help from Apple.)
After 4 frustrating hours and about 40 useless minutes wasted on Apple Support chat, I figured this out.
Okay, here are the steps to allow Mountain Lion to see your MTS files on a Panasonic camera SD card and import them:
Click on your camera SD card.
RIGHT Click on PRIVATE icon. (This used to be a folder, now it is a Quicktime logo.)
Pull down command for “Show Package Contents”
Click on AVCHD
Pull down command for “Show Package Contents”
Click on BDMV
Pull down command for “Show Package Contents”
Open the folder called STREAM
There are your MTS files. Select them and copy them to a folder on your hard drive.
Purchase some type of video converter (I paid 30 bucks for Bigasoft Converter and it works.)
Import the MTS files into the video converter and set the commands (This is several more steps, which you will have to figure out.) This will take quite a while for large, High Def files.
Save converted files to your hard drive.
NOW, finally FCP X will let you import and edit your files.
Thanks Apple for adding 12 steps where it should take one. “Log and Transfer” or IMPORT.  You should fix this.
It took me about 4 hours of frustration to figure this out. Apple support chat service was no help at all. The girl in chat had no understanding of video files.
Thank you Apple, for hiding these files behind your Quicktime logo, thanks for adding extra steps and decreasing productivity. I've been using Macintosh computers since 1987. I would not own a PC, but Apple is not what it used to be. Why would you not just let the .MTS files show without hiding them?

  • Mountain Lion won't display .MTS files from camera SD card in the finder

OS Mountain Lion will not show .MTS files from my camera SD card in the finder.
I don't want to play them. I just need to see a list of the files so that I can copy them off the card onto a hard drive. I know how to convert them.
I have a Panasonic High Def video camera that records .MTS files.
I understand how to convert MTS files for editing in Final Cut Pro. It is not a problem. I have  been doing this with no problems using OS 10.7.5
I plug in my camera, and the SD card shows up as a hard drive in my finder. I click on the hard drive icon and it opens several folders. DCIM, MISC, PRIVATE.
I click on the PRIVATE folder and subfolders open. I click on the AVCHD folder, and then go down to STREAMING, and there are the MTS files.  I select them and import them into BIGASOFT video converter and convert them to .MOV files, which I can edit in FCP.
So that works great in OS 10.7.5
    Here is my problem:
On my new MacBook Pro with OS10.8.3 I plug in the camera. It reads the SD card.
I see the folder DCIM and I see the folder MISC. But the PRIVATE folder (where the .MTS files reside) shows up as a QuickTime icon.  I click on that, but the MTS files do not show up.
I don’t need to play the MTS files. I don’t need to know how to convert them. I can do that.
I right clicked on the PRIVATE (not folder but QT icon) and selected "show package contents." That gave me another list, with an icon for AVCHD, but when I right clicked again and selected "show package contents" the MTS files would not appear.
I just need to be able to see as a list and copy them on to a hard drive.  Why does Apple make this so hard?

  • ITunes makes the Finder crash on Lion

    Hi guys.
I have this annoying problem on my iMac.
When i play a song on iTunes it makes the Finder crash.
I recorded a video to let you understand better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDqxVFHIeuI&feature=youtu.be
What should i do? I don't want to install Lion again...
    Many thanks

I have this problem too, in my case it appeared that the cause was from song notification (http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/19/show-a-now-playing-itunes-notification-in-the-os- x-dock/) I turned it off, and it works fine again.

  • Option click / right click makes the Finder crash

Option clicking or right clicking within the Finder, on a folder or a document makes the Finder crash! Any ideas?
    Thanks, F

    Hi, Fridge.
If Finder quits when you either:• Control-click an object.
    • Right-click an object using a two-button mouse. This may be due to either:• Installed software that added a bad contextual menu item.
    • Removed software that left a contextual menu item behind. What software did you last install or remove? Does its documentation refer to its use of Contextual Menu items?
Contextual menu items can be installed in two places:(1) Your Home > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder.
    (2) Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Contextual Menu Items folder. If the item is in the folder listed in (2), then:
    - Under Tiger or Panther, you'll be prompted to authenticate this operation by providing your Admin password when trashing it.
    - Under Jaguar, you may have to change the Owner to you (via Get Info > Ownership and Permissions) before you can trash it.

  • Does a mixed N and G network make the network slower for the N-enabled?

    Hello all,
I was just admiring my Airport Extreme box after registering it, and I noticed this bit of fine print:
"Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network."
Does this mean that my 802.11g printer makes the network slower for my two 802.11n macbooks?

    Okay,
For a follow up: I'm using the "guest" network for all my G-level wireless devices, and the regular network from all my N devices.
Does that overcome the mixed network limitations? It seems like it wouldn't - because the Airport is basically creating two virtual networks out of one network. Or are there two individual networks on the Airport?
    Thanks!

  • Is there a way to make the "Find" feature case insensitive?

Is there a way to make the "Find" feature case insensitive?

''Is there a way to make the "Find" feature case insensitive?''
    Find ("Ctrl+F")
:uncheck "Match case" on the Find bar
An extension that enhances the Find bar for something they have not added is
*Find All :: Add-ons for Firefox

And if you want a serious fixup for Find see/vote [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171237 Bug 171237] even though it still misses the point, it should be "exactly" like Opera.

  • Can I make the finder open my most recently used folder when opening a new window?

    Hello Community!
When I open a new finder window I would like it to open the folder I worked in last (i.e. the one I saved sth to or opened sth from). I know I can go over "Go to" but is there a way to adjust the settings so that it opens automatically?
    Thanks in advance!

    none than I know of.
Of course, you could always make an Apple Script as an app (that you could place next to the finder icon on the dock for ex) that would do it, but that would require programming skills.

  • How to make the finder window expand to full height AND width of my screen, but not "full screen mode".

The new green button on the finder window makes the screen go into full screen takeover mode - alt clicking this makes it 100% height of the screen.
How can I make this 100% width and height (just like it used to be in Mavericks)?
I have 2 x 27" monitors, so the "full screen takeover" mode is not right as I only want the finder window to be on one monitor whilst I work on another.
    Any ideas?! Thank you!

Was about to post the same question.
Ever since I upgraded to Yosemite (about a month ago), this odd behavior has irked me.
Could it be that it only plagues those of us running dual displays? And therefore nobody else cares?

  • How do I make the "Find Panel" (Ctrl-F) more ME friendly?

After quickly resolving and only recently glitch in an older Firefox version (17.0.1) concerning stubborn restore of last sessions upon start up, using now version 27.0.1, I am now frustrated with the Find Panel (using Ctrl-F). How do I revert the Find Panel to older (not to mention MORE PRACTICAL!) version? If a visualization is actually necessary, I found a link that may be helpful: http://s11.postimg.org/qsc5piwr7/ff_find.png .
Focusing ONLY on the Find Panel, the version I am looking for is on
the top, while the newer (not to mention INFERIOR!) version can be
    found on the bottom.
If I have to get another version, please let it also be able to use the Norton Toolbar, but I would much rather be given the instructions on how to simply edit the version I have now (27.0.1) so as to change only the Find Panel as I described above.
If you noticed, I'm getting super frustrated and also very picky, but as things Mozilla, Google, etc. go on, making what I suppose they call "progress," they all start to diminish in their functions. I'm not looking for a special looking internet browser, but one that works, user friendly, ME friendly. If Firefox has a few bugs to work out, work `em out, but for heaven's sake, stop altering the orientation of tools in the browser, rendering it far less practical than its wiser ancestral versions. I digress though . . .
I'm using Firefox 27.0.1, extremely loathe the Find Panel (Ctrl-F), how can I switch to an older and
better Find Panel (while at the same time also maintianing compatibility for Norton Toolbar)?

Try the following style in Stylish. It's a fair approximation of the previous appearance.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/stylish/
Once Stylish is installed, open the Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A), User Styles category. Click the Write New Style button at the top and paste the following in it. Give the style a name and click the Save button.

The Alt+N and Alt+P keyboard shortcuts no longer work for finding the next and previous occurrence, respectively. You can use F3 or Ctrl+G and Shift+F3 or Ctrl+Shift+G, respectively.
If you want the find bar to remain open when switching tabs, you can use the FindBar Tweak add-on.

  • Permissions modification makes the finder crash

My folders have user lists of "Me", "(unknown)", and "everyone", with the default permissions set to "Read & Write", "Read Only", and "No Access" respectively. When I click the little "+" button to apparently add another user to the list the finder restarts after a small pause. Additionally, if I select the "everyone" group or the "Me" user and click the "-" button nothing happens. Furthermore, I cannot change the "(unknown)" category at all. Usually there are "User", "Group", and "Everyone" categories, or at least thats been the case with pre-10.5 versions of OS X. I have repaired the disk's permissions but it hasn't changed anything. Any clues?

  • ITunes 7.0.1 makes the Finder process go mad

    Hi all,
I've upgraded to iTunes 7.0.1 today and every time I launch it, the fans of my Macbook start blowing like mad (even if I quit iTunes)
It seems to me that the Finder process starts consuming way too much CPU as soon as this new version of iTunes is launched.
I "solved" the problem by opening a terminal and typing "sudo killall Finder" but this is clearly not something that I want to do regularly.
Any idea of what is happening?

The problem has been solved. The fans behave normally now... Seems that Apple reacted quickly.

  • Sorting makes the report slow

    Hi,
I need to sort the SQL (APEX_ITEM) report. I created a hidden item and used the hidden item to sort the report. Its working fine but making the report very slow.
If I remove the sorting, then the report runs fast.
Please let me know what should do to make it faster.
    Thanks.

  • How can I make the Finder on my MacBook Pro recognize my iPad as a device?

I need to transfer images from my iPad to my MacBook Pro while preserving "file created" date and time information.  Trying to do this using iPhoto has not been working for Vertical *****, since the program auto-rotates the images and marks them as created at the time they are imported.  I would prefer to copy the images directly from the iPad to the MacBook Pro, but the iPad is not recognized as a device by the laptop's Finder, even though iTunes and iPhoto detect it.  Any advice?

This is very frustrating...  I did not capitalize the first letter of "vertical" and did not use any inappropriate words.  This forum should provide a way to preview and edit posts.  I believe I conveyed my question adequately and appreciate any feedback despite any possible distractions...
