Unnamed/named faces unsticking in few select photos

Please let me know if anyone has experienced this or know why this may be happening.
Out of about 4000 photos, 3 photos if I name the face, click done, and then go back into it, the face is gone (the name of the face as well as the recognition that a face exists in that location). You have to add missing face again, but each time you hit done or go to the next photo and come back, the face you added disappeared. If you add the missing face and don't name it yet and hit done or go to the next photo and come back, still it unsticks/disappears. Naming the face doesn't have anything to do with it.
I tried resaving the photo again as a jpeg, then as different formats, imported again and same issue. I was going to attach or a give a link to this photo, but first modified the photo so the faces are yellow circles with black background (using paint), but then after importing this modified photo, the name sticked. So it seems that overwriting a certain part of the photo allows the names to stick. This is really annoying because the 3 photos are not that old and I would really prefer to face name. The ironic thing is that those 3 photos, each have multiple faces and it's just one face in each of the photos (not the same pictures, taken different times, different people) that doesn't stick. One photo has 3 faces and in the first two it even suggests names and the last one I'll add, then get back to it and it's gone.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
I have iPhoto 09 8.1 using latest leopard.

LN,
Thank goodness I created a backup. I rebuilt from the last automatic database backup and all my faces were gone. I started tagging from new, and then I tried those 3 photos again and again same problem. The tag won't stay on the photo. Other pictures and other people in the photo tag fine. 1 photo is 3 faces and I can only tag 2 of them, and the other 2 photos (different events) only 1 out of the 2 faces it tags. Since rebuilding lost all my faces, I went back to the original library.
I also tried rebuilding permissions besides the thumbnails and tried all over, still same issue.
What is also really annoying is once I blur out the face on the photo so that I can show you what I mean, then the tag stays after I try again. So I can't show an example without revealing other people's faces, which I would prefer not to do our of other people's privacy to use as an example. I wish I knew what was going on or how to resolve this. What's weird is that it is so obvious that these are faces too and can't see anything out of the ordinary with these.
I tried one other thing that is interesting. If I reimport that picture and FIRST tag the face that unsticks, and hit done, then it stays. Then if I go to faces, I see the picture, but it's weird because in all the thumbnails where the face is the focus of the picture, this the face is almost half off because the face pictures is basically the center of the picture. If you go back to the photo, the face is still tagged, but in the thumbnail it's like it takes the center of the picture and zooms into that, which is basically space between two faces. Then I tag the other face that normally sticks in the photo, and then that is when the original unsticks again. So another thing I've noticed is that it sticks only if you tag only one face in the photo even though in the faces thumbnails it looks a bit off centered then not based on tagging. If you tag this face and exit iphoto, it sticks , but then leaves a grey thumbnail. What weird behavior. I wish apple would have an answer to this.

  • Contacts - how to get faces icon to appear so that I can select photos from iPhoto?

In Contacts when I try to edit and select a persons photo all I can select from is buttons labelled Defaults, Recents, and Camera.  I have heard there should be a Faces button which would allow me to select photos from iPhoto.  In iPhoto I have applied names to my photos. Any idea why this button does not display for me?  I am on a Mac Pro.
    Thanks

After posting my question found links to others who have reported the same issue.  The fix for me was to do the following:
Closed out of both Contacts and iPhoto (may not have been necessary but I did)
    Clicked on Finder application
Clicked on the GO button at the top of the screen
Held down the "alt-option" key so that the LIBRARY selection would appear.  Clicked on LIBRARY.
Clicked on the FILE button at the top of the screen and selected NEW FOLDER.
    Named the folder Images
Launched the Contacts application.  Edited a contact and when I go to edit the photo I now have the FACES button.

  • Why is iPhoto creating new copies of faces in my mother's photos?

My mother uses iPhoto to look at and edit her pictures.  She is getting very frustrated because it seems to be making new pictures of all the faces in her photos including a lot of faces she doesn't know or want (e.g., people gathered around tables at parties).  She's being overwhelmed with new copies of existing photos and these new face crops.  I've looked at the Preferences and can't find anything to turn off to stop this behavior (I don't use iPhoto myself because I don't like the behavior).
For that matter, I can't seem to find out why it's creating duplicates of pictures already in her Library.  To my knowledge, she's not Importing them again so there's no reason for these duplicates to keep cropping up.  She was using OS X 10.6.8 on her iMac but I've just upgraded her to Mavericks.

The faces are showing up in her iPhoto gallery.  To my knowledge, she hasn't done any importing and she definitely hasn't cropped or selected these faces for anything.  It seems to be creating pictures from any faces it finds in group photos but the faces are unnamed and not located in the Faces tab although they show up in the Photos tab.

  • I am wondering what is the best way to merge a very large iphoto library (from my MBP) to my new iMac (which has a few hundred photos on it now), and then upgrade to Aperture?

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
I have a new iMac with a few hundred photos that I've uploaded since I bought it last December.
The iMac is where I want to keep everything stored as my main photo library, and manage it with a new Aperture installation.
Before I go and do this, and possibly muck it all up,
I would like to figure out the proper steps.
I am not too familiar with how to transfer files in the first place, so any help for a beginner would be much appreciated.
Starting from how to safely move the files from the MBP to the iMac, if anyone could walk me through this process.
I've been searching around but I have a specific goal (with getting everything into Aperture) so I don't want to get crossed up.
    Thanks for your help!!

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
To be able to merge your libraries, your Aperture version and iPhoto version must match. For basic reading see: Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture
and Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
Assuming you are running the latest Aperture and iPhoto versions:
Before merging libraries ensure that your iPhoto Library has no issues. While still on your old mac run the "library first aid tools" on your iPhoto Library. Hold down the key combination ⌥⌘ and double click your iPhoto Library, then select "Repair database".
Make sure you have a backup of your current Aperture Library and iPhoto library.
Do both macs have a FireWire port? Then you could connect your macs in Target Disk Mode:
See OS X Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
This way your new mac could see your old mac as an external disk and you could copy directly between the macs.
Otherwise copy your iPhoto library by drag-and-drop to an external disk (on your old mac) and connect that disk to your new mac. Check, if the external drive is formatted for mac (MacOS X Extended (Journaled)). Otherwise reformat it, before you copy the iPhoto library to that drive.
When your iPhoto Library has been moved to your new Mac launch Aperture and use the command "File > Import > Library" from the main menu bar. If there are duplicates in the Aperture library (if you imported earlier from iPhoto) you may be prompted if you want to "Add" or "Merge". If you have lots of duplicates, pick "Merge", otherwise "Add".
Post back, if you need more detailed instructions.
    Good Luck.

  • Just downloaded trial version -- don't see iPhoto library in Aperture and need to import selected photos-not entire library!

I just downloaded trial version -- don't see iPhoto library in Aperture and need to import selected photos to edit, not entire i Photo library! I read manual and it says:
Browsing and Selecting Images in Your iPhoto Library
You use the Aperture iPhoto Browser to review iPhoto images and import specific images into the Aperture library. The iPhoto Browser gives you a handy way of looking for certain images without having to import your entire iPhoto library.
So, where do I review the iPhoto images...there is nothing in there that says "iPhoto Library"   Everything I see pertains to Aperture Library which of course is empty since I haven't imported (or dragged) any photos in there yet.
Also is tech support available for Aperture?  I have Apple Extended Support and I sure would love it if I had individual help.  I have a deadline --3 days to edit 300 photos and I'm a complete amateur.  iPhoto doesn't  have the capability to erase parts of a face (I need to contour the neck of a mannequin to make it proportionate to the separate head I put on top of it. I'm sure Aperture must have a tool to help me do that!  At least I hope so.

where do I review the iPhoto images
File -> Import -> Show iPhoto Browser

Sounds more like a job for Photoshop to me
if I decide to import entire iPhoto library into Aperture will it delete my iPhoto library?
    No.

  • Selected photo's folder

After doing a search for all photos that had no keywords I got a number of photos.  I selected the first one and expected the folder in the left hand panel that contained the photo to be highlighted but it wasn't.  It helps to know which folder the picture came from to help identify it.  I finally found that I could do this by adding folder to the grid view options but it took me quite a while to discover this. I could also right click the photo and then pick show in expolrer but this is time consuming.   I don't use LR every day so it's hard to remember all the options and I had to spend 30 minuets finding out how to do this.  I may not have to do this again for months so it will probably take me time to look it up again (getting old).  Maybe it can already be done but I would like to see the folder that the selected photo is in to be highlighted.

Thanks for the reply they are helpful.  I have a few thousand photos in a catalog, mostly wild life.  Anyway I just wanted to be sure they all had keywords so I did search with the keyword selection set to none and came up with about a dozen old photos that didn't get keyworded way back when.  I don't do this very often so was just looking for a more intutive way to identify the different folders they are in.  This may be obvious to others but I use Windows and with a file open the folder icon changes to an open folder icon when looking at something in it so was expecting something like that.  The filter bar above the film strip shows the photo's file name.  Even with several photos selected one is highlited more showing what photo the name goes with.  It would be nice if it would have the option to also show the folder name.  Maybe I'll remember to right click the photo the next time I need to know the folder so maybe this isn't a problem.  I usually don't care about the folder since I just do imports from the card with a date folder name and most of the folders have the same type of subject matter so it would be hard to come up with unique names for them.

  • "Edit with" does not open all selected photos in PS3

If I select several photos and then click on "Edit with" Photoshop, often only one or a few of the selected photos will actually open up in Photoshop. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks,

    hey, peter
all selected photos should be opening in Photoshop as the external editor unless you're in Primary Only mode. click the Primary Only button icon that has the 1 in it, it's between the Viewer and Browser on right side

  • IPhoto 11: Will not allow me to select photos for upload

Hello my knowledgeable compadres. I have installed iLife 11 and am running Snow Leopard 10.6.6 on a MacBookPro. I have had no problems with iPhoto 09 but since I've upgraded to the latest version, I am unable to select photos to upload to email, facebook, web pages or anywhere else. Interesting variation is that some photos are selectable; others are not. They are all jpg format so I am at a loss. I can't select photos from within iPhoto to edit; I can't click and select photos from the photos icon in the finder; I can't select any photos from the dialogue between Facebook & iPhoto and it's driving me crazy. I've had my Mac since 2008.Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Bernardine

when I attempt to select the photo from the preview pane in iphoto, it either is inert or, allows me to select it but the photo goes to black with a grey alert symbol on it and disappears in either a close up view or edit window.
The exclamation point - ! - turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. Your problem isn't selecting files, its that iPhoto can't find the file you've selected.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can't select photo on flickr

When I long press to save a photo on flickr, instead of selecting the photo, it selects first word of text on page (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/patrick-smith-photography/5497837887/sizes/o/). These are photos that allow download. Long press on Dolphin will save it. There is option to click link to download, but I'm hoping in future that Firefox brings up dialogue box whenever anything is downloaded, so I can name file and choose download location, instead of having to go find file, rename and move. But first it has to know you're selecting photo. I don't really care if it works in Dolphin. I use a lot of design & photo sites that use flash on opening pages & have no mobile version (or app just for iOS). So would really appreciate if Firefox could know that I'm trying to save a photo and not text, and at some point let me manage download at that point, instead of later in file manager.

Thanks. Updating brought back save. Still wish they would have dialogue box for naming file and choosing download location like Dolphin. However, I miss flash in Dolphin far more than a dialogue box here :-).

  • Iphoto freezes up while selecting photos

When I select a few different photos using the apple key the little waiting ball starts to spin & iphoto stops responding so I have to force quit - I keep rebooting trying & it keeps doing it

    Hi a.g.,
It could be that one/some of those photos may be corrupt.
Does this happen with all your photos or just a select few?
Can each of those images open up when they are double clicked?
    iPhoto spinning ball..
--If you can open the library but you get constant beachballs when you try to scroll or do anything with the photos it could be some corrupt photos. Try and see if you can figure out where the photos are by following these steps.
Make sure your library view is set to "rolls"
Now make sure all the rolls are closed. Option click on one open roll to close all the rolls. Notice when the beachball occurs when you hold your cursor next to any particular roll/rolls.
See if you can highlight the suspect photos roll title and then drag that to the desktop. This is so we can at least save this roll and see if the photos open in Preview. See if the photos you just dragged to the desktop will open in Preview. If they all open in Preview then that roll is fine. Keep dragging the next suspect roll to the desktop until you find what roll has the corrupt photos. when you find the roll or photos then you can patiently see if you can highlight the photo or roll of photos in iPhoto and delete them. If it is a whole roll then click on the title of the roll and hit delete.
    Hopefully it will delete.
then go to the trash bin in iPhoto, all the way to the bottom of the source column, and highlight "trash"
control click on the trash and "empty trash"

  • I am trying to download (share) selected photos from my Mac to my i-pad. Get as far as hitting apply but nothing happens. What is universal access...should I hit that button?

I am trying to  share selected photos from my Mac to my I Pad.I went into I-Tunes and  followed the instructions and am fine until it says to hit apply....which I do and nothing happens. I can't seem to highlight the I Pad "device" logo on the (left side of the I-Tunes) list to be able to share the photos. (I still want to keep them in my Mac, also). At the bottom of the instructions to accomplish this it says Universal Access...should I  click on that? And what is it? Should I be selecting synch thru wi-fi?

Eject the iPad if necessary, quit iTunes and restart your Mac.
Connect the iPad to your Mac with the cable and launch iTunes. Now see if you can click on the iPad name on the left side of iTunes. If you can, go into the photos tab of iTunes in the window on the right and make sure that the Sync Photos heading is checked. Then select the folder form which you want to sync photos - maybe iPhoto on your Mac? Then select all of the albums, events, faces - however you have them set up - then click on Apply. See if that works.
The photos will still be on your Mac after you sync. Do not click on Universal Access - you don't need that to sync.
Here is a very helpful Apple support article that you can read as well.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can deal with WiFi sync later.

  • Syncing Faces but only with associated photo albums?

I have about 6,000 photos in my iPhoto as well. But I only want the following albums synced to my iPad:
    Album A - 20 photos
    Album B - 10 Photos
    Album C - 30 Photos
    Total Photos: 60
If I sync just these albums, my iPad doesn't display the associated Faces data for these pictures.
So I went back and synced the Faces for the people in these photos, but the problem is, my faces data contains pictures that are outside of these three albums, so when I synced the faces data I got:
    Person 1 - 800 photos
    Person 2 - 500 photos
    Person 3 - 300 photos
    Total Photos: 1600
So instead of just the 60 photos I want, I now have 1660 photos on my iPad. I wish I could just sync the faces data from just the 60 photos I actually want on my iPad.
    Is this possible?

I'm seeing the same issue. Faces appears to be an all-or-nothing venture on all platforms. I use Aperture 3.0.3, and there has been numerous discussions about not being able to limit the use of Faces to projects (events in iPhoto), or folders (allows you to create a hierarchy of projects, like a file system).
Size is the most obvious issue. But I selected my wife, loaded the photos, and handed it over to her. There were several unflattering shots. So if she wants to show her friends photos of herself, she can't do it.
The only workaround that can be done, as far as I understand it, would be to remove her face from these photos.
I'm also seeing another issue when selecting faces, for which no other photos exist. The key photo appears distorted, and the name does not show.

  • I am trying to crop faces from old family group photos and paste them on to records in Family Tree Maker. When I do this, the pasted cropped image reverts to the original of the entire family. Is there a way of unlinking the original version from the crop

I am trying to crop faces from old family group photos and paste them on to records in Family Tree Maker. When I do this, the pasted cropped image reverts to the original of the entire family. Is there a way of unlinking the original version from the cropped image?

Are you copying the cropped images directly from Aperture's Browser window and then pasting into your family tree?
It would be safer to export the cropped faces as new image files to a folder on your disk, and then drag them from there to the "Family Tree" window.
To export select the cropped image versions in Aperture's browser and use the command "File > Export > Version". Select a suitable export preset from the pop-up menu, for example "Jpeg fit into ..." and select a folder to export to.

  • Using Face Tagging and need more photo info

    I have PSE 4.
I'm using the Face Tagging feature of Organizer.
For some of the faces I need to get a better look at the entire photo in order to identify who the face is. Is there a way that I can get a bigger thumbnail? Or even better is there a way to identify the image where the face came from? The thumbnail that pops up in the lower right hand corner of the screen doesn't seem to allow anything to be done with it. If I could just get the name of the file, that would be fine. Any ideas?

fwiw, the reason I need help with these faces is that I'm working on a set of old (1920/1930) photos. A lot of faces of people I've never met. Plus baby pictures. I have text descriptions of who the people are at the bottom of the photos. So when I see the face I need to be able to look at the photo and that text to properly tag it.
Is there any way that the Face Finder can 'organize' the faces so that similar faces are kept together? That would make tagging them easier. I noticed that the Find by Visual Similarity function rates the selected photos with a percentage grade so there must be some technology that can compare two images and figure out how closely related they are to each other.

  • Uploading selected photos from iPhoto to Facebook

When I upload selected photos from iPhoto to Facebook, recently the entire album is uploaded even though I only select a few photos. This is a new issue - in the past, if I select a few photos and upload to FB, only the selected pictures upload. Now, it's the whole album. Is it Facebook or iPhoto? Is it Timeline or iCloud? It's driving me crazy.

Have this problem too with Lightroom! The sudden spike in views for this post would suggest that it's only a recent thing. Have you notified Facebook of this?
