Unnecessary and persistent modified files

I just imported a BUNCH of images and arbitrarily it appears that iPhoto has made modified versions of most of the images. These duplicates are the exact same it appears to the originals, and are taking up unnecessary space. I've even deleted a few of the modified, but the drop menu for some of the images still says "Revert to Original". Sometimes, after selecting that, it still maintains a modified version. WHY is this happening, and HOW can I manage this so modifieds ONLY happen when I manually edit a photo?
Any input appreciated,
Very Frustrated Dan P.

Once you get the original files outside of iPhoto you can use either Seashore orXee to rotate the file. Xee will do lossless rotation.
There is a contextual menu application, PhotoTool CM that will losslessly rotate file. However, it may not be compatible with 10.5.7. I just got a new iMac and it doesn't show up in the contextual menu. It may be just my setup and other addons that is the problem. When it works it worked very will. If you're still at 10.5.5 give it a try and see if it will work for you. If you at 10.5.7 try it anyway. It just might be my setup.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • IPhoto '09 - original and (un)modified files

Hi there, just beginning to use this software and am confused.
I have my original photos on my hard drive. When I import them into iPhoto, I get two additional copies - one in the iPhoto Library Originals folder, and another in the Modified folder, despite the fact I have done nothing to modify them. So, I end up with three copies. Sure, I can delete the original hard drive ones, but then I still have two copies taking up scarce disk space.
Question is, why am I automatically getting an iPhoto Original copy and a Modified copy? Some googling tells me that if a photo has been rotated, this will be the case. But this is also happening for photos originally taken in landscape format. Does it, then, happen for any photo taken on a camera with an autorotate function?
How can I solve this problem so that I have just one (Original) photo in my iPhoto library (original original still available elsewhere, and a modified version only being created if I actually do something to the photo subsequently in iPhoto?
    Thanks so much!

Okay, thanks, Larry. You know before you answered I did go ahead and delete the Modified folder to see what would happen (bearing in mind I have the original originals in two other places). (Sorry for the contrariness.) I deleted it while iPhoto was open, and it was simply instantly recreated, which was a bit of a surprise. Then I closed iPhoto and deleted it, then reopened iPhoto, and no Modified folder was created.
Everything looks good in the iPhoto library - SO FAR, of course - though a right-click does give the options for "Show File" (just points to hard disk root directory) and "Show Original File" (points to iPhoto Originals folder).
I am going to leave it like that and see if anything happens (if it does I'll report back for others to hear). Worst comes to worst, I just delete everything, create a new Library and reimport again. I won't rely on iPhoto as my only source of originals...
    Thanks again.

  • Script to enumerate, and interactively modify File Properties (eg. meta-data)

    Hey Script Guys:
I am analyzing SharePoint capabilities for a customer and there are some things that they need that is not there, but so far it seems it is but can't be seen.
    First two things are:
'Stored Procedures' - That is a way from within a rule or workflow to interact with an interpretive host.  Right now I use REXX, which has the INTERPRET function.  I can write a script into a text element, send it there, and get the results.  Handy,
but rough.  This is especially handy in validation situations, or re-mapping of data.
A way for metadata to be plugged into a file easily without using the Properties dialog (like read it from document fields, etc) so the Content Routing can be cleaned-up to be more fully automated.
Bear in mind I grew-up on Motorola Assembler, BAL and MASM to develop  ASIC's, process controllers, operating systems and compilers, so alot of this shell programming is still a little weird.  Be nice
    JgEarl (FOG) sends...

File properties in WIndows are not part of the file. Some are part of the directory entry like the LastWriteTime and ReadOnly flag.
In Windows Explorer file properties like the internal properties of an MSWord document or an Adobe PDF file can be exposed if the vendor provides a support DLL that Explorer can use to expose these. They are not normally available to any program directly.
They are only available via the "Shell" (Explorer) or via the application that manages the document.
In SharePoint the "library" or other container manages a set or properties defined by SharePoint.  For MS documents we may be able to use "shell" methods to tattoo the SharePoint library with this information.
None of this has much of anything to do with scripting.  It is e3xternal to the scripting system and can be accessed by the product specific support DLL such as the dll installed by MSWord and Adobe.
To access these things through the shell in script we must instantiate the "Shell" object.  In SharePoint we can do this prior to loading the document or we can load documetns that Sharepointas nan installed DLL for.
At this time I am not sure as to how SP does this.  I recommend posting in the SharePoint developer forum for information on how to access and build these extensions DLLs.  I believe you can also look it up in the SharePoint SDK.
Outside of serverside code or using a custom library I do not see how you can do this.
You can, of course, always generate a file of name/value pairs describing your files.  You can also add almost anything to the SharePoint library structure or create custom types to display your custom metadata.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Why does iPhoto 11 show both modified and original photo files for items I've never modified?

I have been looking through some recent photos and noticed that File > Reveal in Finder displays a modified and an original file for images I've never modified.  The originals are in subdirectory iphoto > Masters and the Modified files are in subdir iphoto > previews.  This appears to happen strictly with photos taken on my iphone.  Any ideas?  It's eating up a fair amount of HD space, for no reason as far as I can tell.

#1 is patently untrue; I go in there all the time via File > Reveal in Finder so that I can grab images to pull into other applications, mail clients etc.
Actually it is patently true - what you are doing is not supported, is not necessary and is dangerous - you should only access the photos using the supported methods
#2 - I thought maybe that was it too but it's on images both vertical as well as horizontal.  There's even images in there that are just still frames of videos taken on iphone.
2 - the most common cause of un-expected "modified" versions is having the autorotate feature set on your camera - this causes a rotate flag to be set so that when yu import iPhoto does that and as always keeps the original and keeps the rotated version as mopdified
Given that you provided no information about your work flow one can only guess at common reasons
The jpeg preview of each video is also a modified version - as to why both vertical (portrait) and horizonal (Landscape) photos would have modified versions more information would be needed - the most likely cause is that you have made changes of some sort to them

  • Has anyone else had problems uploading modifyed files to an external server

Hi, My website bilyz.com has been running OK on two external servers, two different hosting providers, yet neither will allow me to upload modified files.
Since both external servers will run my site OK this narrows the problem source down to my site construction (pre 2014 update) or to Muse software.
The external servers will accept all my html files without a hitch but stalls at various images and not always the same image.
Now I have totally rebuilt the site by stripping out all images, resizing them and remounting them into the slider widget but it doesn't make a difference.
The external server technicians are at a loss to explain and after research have referred me back to Adobe Muse.
    Kind regards
    Bill Watters

    Thank you Aish
As per your suggestion I published the unchanged site to Business Catalyst as bilyzcom.businesscatalyst.com and it uploaded without a fault. Then I made an alteration to the Gallery page where I changed one image in the slider and a small typo on the Design page. Then published again but this time I selected 'options' and clicked on 'modified files only' Result: The site uploaded perfectly and the altered pages showed the recent changes.
So can we conclude that the source of the problem isn't in the Muse software?.
However, If this problem only occurs with the external server since the update; it also stalls when uploading all files and with modified files so could it point to the recent Muse 2014 update?
Yesterday I have also uninstalled my most recent version then re-installed it via the Creative Cloud File manager. . My copy is 2014.0.1.30 CL 785017
I hope this gives you something to work on.
I look forward to your reply.

  • Is there a way to manually custom-edit the "Date created" and "Date modified" attributes of files in Mac OS 10.6?

In "List View" in a Finder window, among the many column options are "Date created" and "Date modified." In "View Options" (command-J) for any folder, one can add these columns, along with the standard ones "Size," "Kind," "Label," etc.
A user can alter a file's name, and a file's "label" (i.e. its color). On the other hand, a user can NOT arbitrarily edit/alter a file's official "size" -- other than by physically altering the contents of the file itself, obviously.
But what about a file's "Date created" and "Date modified"? Can either of those be manually edited/changed, just as a file's name can be changed -- or is a file's creation-date an immutable attribute beyond the editorial reach of the user, just as a file's "size" is?
And yes, a person can "alter" a file's "Date modified" by simply modifying the file, which would change its "Date modified" to be the moment it was last altered (i.e. right now). But (and here's the key question) can a user somehow get inside a file's defining attributes and arbitrarily change a file's modification date to be at any desired point in the past that's AFTER its creation date and BEFORE the present moment? Or will so doing cause the operating system to blow a gasket?
If it is possible to arbitrarily manually alter a file's creation date or modification date, how would it be done (in 10.6)? And if it is NOT possible, then why not?

    sanjempet --
    Whew, that's a relief!
But as for your workaround solution: All it will achieve is altering the created and modified dates to RIGHT NOW. What I'm looking to do is to alter the modification/creation dates to some point in the past.
I'm not doing this for any nefarious reason. I just like to organize my work files chronologically according to when each project was initiated, but sometimes I forget to gather the disparate documents all into one folder right at the beginning, and as a result, sometimes after I finish a job, I will create a new folder to permanently house all the files in an old project, and when that folder is places in a bigger "completed projects" folder and then is organized by "Date created" or "Date modified" in list view, it is out-of-order chronologically because the creation and modification dates of that particular project folder reflect when the folder was created (i.e. today), and not when the files inside the folder were created (i.e. weeks or months ago).
The simplest solution would simply to be able to back-date the folder's creation or modification date to match the date that the project actually started!

  • If I turn on Adobe File Sync will that duplicate files in my Dropbox? (Unnecessary and I can't afford the bandwidth).

I have gigabytes of Adobe CC files arranged in appropriate client folders in Dropbox (and mirrored on my local hard drive).
It looks like if I turn File Sync on (needed to access Assets) some or all of this will be duplicated and separated from non-Adobe data in each client file.
Messy, unnecessary and 100GB of bandwidth I don't want to pay for! (I'm on 4G so it's expensive.)

    MichaelGli2,
The Creative Cloud desktop application will only sync files that are in your "Creative Cloud Files" folder on your local machine.
By default, the "Creative Cloud Files" folder is in your user's home folder (/Users/<yourusername>/Creative Cloud Files/ on Mac, or C:\Users\<yourusername>\Creative Cloud Files\ on Windows).
Unless you have deliberately changed the location of your Creative Cloud Files folder yourself so that it is inside your local Dropbox folder, there will be no duplication.

  • Relinking to modified file names is working in CS3 and not in CS2

We are trying to remove a few characters identified as illegal(cannot be used in the file names in Windows) from the file names and then modify the InDesign layout files to relink to the modified file names. We are using the InDesign CS3 server to open up the application and work on the layout files using Java and CORBA mode(used CS3 SDK). First we remove the illegal characters from the file names. Next we will go through all the links in a layout file and will identify the links with illegal characters and relink it to the modified files. The relinking will happen to only those files which has a state NORMAL before the file names are modified. This approach works fine for the CS3 files but for CS2 after the file names got modified the link rolls back to the file path on the original m/c where the link was created and the relinking is not working.
Have anyone did something similar to that, if so can you provide with some details on how to address this issue.
Do let me know if you need any more specific information for providing your inputs to address this issue. Any inputs will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

Thanks. I got it resolved by saving the document by passing in a OptArg.makeFile() instead of OptArg.noFile(). I modified this based on what I read from Adobe Livedocs which said that any CS2 file opened in CS3 will be converted to CS3 and will be considered as a new document.

  • Original and modified file folders in iPhoto

I just loaded photos into iPhoto and the files populated in both the Originals and Modified file folders in iPhoto.  None of these photos have been modified.  I'm concerned with conserving disk space on my Mac.  How do I keep this from happening moving forward?

Your camera has an Auto-Rotate feature. However, the camera does not actually rotate any pixels in the file, but instead flags it with an instruction: "Display me this way". Because iPhoto integrate with other apps it automaticlly creates the modified version. Otherwise photos would turn up in your emails or word processing documents sideways, as these apps don't know nything about such tags.
If you then try to Revert to Original, iPhoto will remove the edited version. However, when it then looks at the Original file again, it sees the flag, and creates a new rotated version. This loop will run as long as you Revert to the Original. The solution is to either a: turn off the Auto-Rotate feature on your camera or b: rotate the photos prior to importing them to iPhoto.
Going forward: digitial photography take up lots of space. Don't be concerned about it. Buy a large external drive and put your iPhoto Library on it.

    1) SMILPlugin - SMILMediaGenerator class modified to support both live and vod smil files. SMILLoader modified to retain original resource metadata.
    2) AkamaiBasicStreamingPlugin refactored. This includes improved support for all types of streams while the plugin is loaded, added support for plugin metadata that can override built in defaults for a) live stream time out; b) whether or not the plugin should try to reconnect to a live stream if both primary and secondary encoders fail; c) the interval at which the retry should occur.  Added support for resource metadata for specifying connect-level and stream-level auth tokens so that these tokens do not need to be part of the URL (although this is acceptable also).
    3) AkamaiPluginSample app updated to support auth tokens which are not part of the URL (these are passed to the Akamai plugin via resource metadata).

  • Why is there a "modified" and an "Original" file in iPhoto Library?

I ran out of space on a 100 Gig drive today.. My iphoto library shows 23.9 gb on the bottom left hand side of the iphoto screen.. But when I look at the drive I find the "modified" file is 23.9 gig and the "original" file is 78 gigs.
Anyone know if I need both of those files?
    Thanks. Gil

    Gil
Yes you most certainly need both of those.
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
iPhoto always preserves your Original file. When you edit, export or whatever, the app uses a copy for these actions. In doing this it’s working to the best principles of Digital Asset Management. So, in your Modified folder are the edited versions of the pics. This is why you can use the Photos -> Revert to Original command. It’s also the basis of the Non-Destructive editing feature.
If you don’t want this way of working then, simply, don’t use iPhoto. You simply cannot stop it doing this.
If disk space is an issue you can run your Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I noticed my hard drive getting filled, didn't save 500 Gb of data on it. I made the observation that hidden files are been created on the Hd. I assumed they were unnecessary and deleted most of them. To my dismay am getting a kernel panic message. How do i go about getting this fixed?

Depending on what directory or directories you were erasing from you've certainly erased important system files and perhaps important applications files as well. If you have been using TimeMachine to back your computer up you should reboot into recovery mode (restart and hold Command + R until you see the Apple icon) and perform a restore.
If you haven't, boot into recovery mode anyway and choose the install OS option. Keep your fingers crossed that the OS is the only thing you deleted and that this works. You may also find it necessary to reinstall some of your software.

  • Modified Files on FCPX... Random files in event folder(that I used to make a multicam clip) become modified and unusable. Is there anything i can do to prevent this?

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, every time I create a multicam clip on FCPX, random files(that were used to make the multicam clip) become modified and unusable(in High Quality). Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
I've tried transcoding, creating proxy media, creating optimized media, plus I've tried none of the above. Thing is, no matter what I do, it still happens(to random files) "after" I make the multicam clip. Is there a setting or something that was accidentally enabled by me or the upgrade?
BTW: Everything seems to work fine when 'playback' is set to proxy. The problem is when I'm ready to export and switch 'playback' to High Quality.

I had this same issue! But fixed it by going into the finder, finding the event, and delted the files out of the "High Quality Media." My project then refreshed to normal and no red modified file slides. The cool part: I din't even shut fcpx down to mess with the files in the finder. It all worked like a charm.
    Good luck!

  • Updated phone page and when I ftp'd "modified files" it never changed the page

I wasn't ready to load the phone part of Muse but already added a logo and contact info.  When I saw that it was on my phone I went back into Muse and added a text block stating we are updating the mobile site.  When I ftp'd the "modified files" the page never changed.  Any idea?  I checked my layers and everything.  After I added the block I went back into Muse and changed the wording.  After ftping the modified files again it wrote over it and now there are two layers of text over each other!  ugh!  So I thought I would just delete them both.  Wrong.  They are both still there.  Any clue?

Select "All Files" when doing the FTP upload.
Muse relies solely on the information in the muse_manifest.xml file to determine what files have changed since Muse last uploaded files. If you manually add, edit or delete files from your site Muse will be completely unaware of those changes and you'll need to upload with "All Files" select in order to get Muse back in sync with what files (and file versions) are on your site.
Muse takes this approach because manually checking every file for changes over FTP during every FTP upload would be very slow.

  • Can a Compiled and saved AppleScript File be modified?

What I mean is, If i were to create an AppleScript file with default variable, functions etc. Could I,say sometime in the future, edit those variables dynamically?
So for example, I have a script file that customizes an XCode project and  creates an .app file and an .ipa file. Would it be possible to edit the Applescript file, thereby generating a new .app and .ipa file?
Send  Parameters to -----> Default AppleScipt file ---> Modified AppleScript File ----> New .app and .ipa File

    Hello
You can use "load script" command and modify the properties of loaded script. Something like this:
[1] a.scpt is assumed to be coded :
    property p : 0
    tell application "SystemUIServer"
        activate
        display dialog "p = " & p
    end tell
[2] When b.scpt is opened in AppleScript Editor, decompiled source shows exactly the same as a.scpt
although its property p's current value is not 0 but 1 as set in this script.
In other words, decompiled source code shows static value as defined in source code
whilst the loaded script stores and uses dynamic value at runtime.
    -- load script
    set f to (path to desktop)'s POSIX path & "a.scpt" -- [1]
set o to load script POSIX file f
    -- run it (p = 0)
    tell o to run
    -- modify it
    set o's p to 1
    -- run it (p = 1)
    tell o to run
-- store modified script to new file
    set f1 to (path to desktop)'s POSIX path & "b.scpt" -- [2]
store script o in POSIX file f1 with replacing
-- load modified script from file
set o1 to load script POSIX file f1
    -- run it (p = 1)
    tell o1 to run
If you want to modify the source code, you may use osadecompile(1) and osacompile(1). Something like this:
    #!/bin/bash
    cd ~/desktop || exit
    osadecompile a.scpt | perl -CSDA -lpe 's/property p : 0/property p : 2/' | osacompile -o c.scpt
    osascript c.scpt
Or to run modified script without saving:
    #!/bin/bash
    cd ~/desktop || exit
    osadecompile a.scpt | perl -CSDA -lpe 's/property p : 0/property p : 2/' | osascript -
    * The above is true for plain AppleScript script. Don't know about AppleScriptObjC script. Also in recent OSes, applet might need to be re-signed after modification.
