Unnecessary extra space automatically added in a 2-col. index

I am composing an index of topics for a volume of articles. The problem is that InDesign automatically adds an extra space here and there after an individual entry. The best way to describe the situation is to show a screenshot, I think:
http://www.aijaa.com/v.php?i=2866334.jpg
In the right-hand column, you can see the redundant space between the lines with the text "62-64" and "Urpräsentierbar/Nichturpräsen-".
Knowledgeable help would be deeply appreciated!

Your screencap doesn't show everything I would want to see (returns and
spaces, which you can see with Type > Show Hidden Characters), but the
autolead does give a clue. The fact that your lead is (12) and not 12
means that Indesign will open up the leading to the appropriate amount
for the size of the text. 10 pt text gets 12 pt lead, but 20 pt text
will give you 24 pt lead, which would look like a whole lot of extra space.
Things to check:
-An extra return. Obvious, but I can't rule it out from your screencap.
-Varying text sizes. A 20 pt return, for example. Highlight all the text
in those two lines (all of it, even the return) and see if the size (or
lead) field is blank. Blank means the values are different.
-Extra space above or below the paragraph. Yes, these short little lines
are paragraphs, and you can assign space above or below to each one.
You'll have to switch the Control panel to Paragraph Formatting Controls.
-Align to baseline grid.

  • Typing on the Internet here and on Twitter  extra spaces  are added.

    Typing on Twitter  and on this website now, extra spaces are added at the beginning of where I started  dictating.  They are added it  at the moment  the dictation  microphone is switched off. It does not happen on Quick Drafts and on the notepad that came with the iPad. It did not happpen now with regular typing. On  Twitter the cursor starts out in strange places  including outside the box that you write in. And that is unrelated to dictation. Once I start typing it moves into the correct position.  This started after I updated to 8.3. And after Twitter stop letting iPads use the desktop site. But might be unrelated to both.

    You are my hero!    On the Twitter thing. (Still need a dictation hero. ) So happy to have that back.    One additional piece of info. I did what you said on the mobile site. So somebody in my in my boat can just go to Twitter on the mobile site and then do the touch the address bar pulldown thing. Which is even easier. Thank you so much!

  • Need a method so that extra spaces automatically get removed from end of the sentences in MS Word 2013

    hello
    i have some documents (pasted from other applications), in which at the end of some sentences, an extra space exist before ending dot (.).
    for example "this is an article ." so it is assumed as error.
    is there ant trick or method or micro so that all extra spaces be automatically removed from end of sentences & for example the above sentence becomes so:
    "this is an article."
    thanks in advanced

    Press Ctrl+H to activate the Replace dialog.
    Enter a space followed by a period (dot) in the Find what box.
    Enter a period (dot) in the Replace with box.
    Click Replace All.
    (If you don't like the result, you can undo it by pressing Ctrl+Z)

    Hi Hans
    cool, thank you very much
    but here another problem arises. the source document is like this:
    "this is an article .we discuss IT here."
    after your approach it becomes:
    "this is an article.we discuss IT here." ---> here MSword shows another grammar error because . is atached to "we".
    any guide to resolve this problem as well

  • Extra spaces added (that I can't get rid of) when using STHeiti font.  Anything I can do?

    Hi there,
    When I use the font that I want to use (STHeiti), extra spaces get added automatically—spaces that, by the way, I can’t ‘delete’—after every apostrophe (or single quotation mark).  See screen grabs below:
    Here's another example:
    Do you know how I can make these spaces go away?  When I do a search on the internet (InDesign STHeiti), I see that others have had other types of problems with this font… having to do with exporting a finished project to pdf and getting it printed.
    In the context of talking about it, one person says that the STHeiti font "is installed as part of the Apple operating system, and is probably only meant for onscreen display".
    But someone else adds:  "the font is installed, by default, on all macs running 10.4 and above (possibly further back than that, but lets go with what we know), so opening the file at the printers on such a mac will have the font available”
    I'm on my Mac, though (not yet ready for the printer), so why do I have a problem using this font?
    I know I could use another font, but this STHeiti is a really nice one!
    Thanks for any advice,
    Malcolm

    Wow... that works beautifully.
    I've done it, but before proceeding too much further I'll google and try to find out more about this "Use Typographer's Quotes" setting.  Don't want it to bite me down the road.
    Thanks very much for the tip—

  • The extra space created due to Conditional Build Tags

    Hello,
    I am authoring a online help file, for a web application. As different content is needed for the 4 different roles of the user, I have used Single Sourcing option and made use of conditional build tags for the content that is not common among the different roles. I even have images which are difffernt for the differnt roles. I have used conditional build tags for these too. The problem is that, extra space appears in place of the images which are not applicable to build I am publishing. Is there any workaround other than modifying the HTML files to remove the extra space added?
    Regards,
    Deepti Korwar

    hi Deepti,
    I have seen this issue on multi-level lists (in RH9) when using soft returns (Shift-Enter) within the lists.
    An extra space is added before images marked with CBTs. But this only caused problems in print.
    Are you seeing this space on all outputs or just print?
    Can you paste a code snippet from one of the offending list?
    Perhaps you can get round this by opening up the HTML tab and carefully examining and perhaps moving the CBTs.
    e.g. <?rh-cbt_start condition="xyz" ?><img src="xyz"  > <?rh-cbt_end ?></p><?rh-list_end ?>
    Will be helpful to see the code.
    thanks
    Craig

  • Removing extra spaces from a long document

    Hello
    I have seen a number of find/change and GREP formulas to do similar things. I have NO scripting or coding experience and have labored to understand GREP.
    So I am a little afraid to use it as I don't know what all the modifiers refer to (I do have a printout of some neat GREP cheatsheets like Mike Witherell's that I can absorb until I obtain a good reference )
    I need something I can copy and paste into either find/change or GREP dialog that will do the following in less than 12 steps (hopefully) without doing something catastrophic like removing all of my paragraph marks (which I almost did using someones GREP expression)
    No spaces before any comma, period, exclamation mark, question mark, colon, semicolon
    One space only after any of those
    One Space before any opening parenthesis and one space after the closing parenthesis
    No space after the opening parenthesis or before the closing parenthesis
    Remove any double or extra spaces ( en, em etc.)
    Remove any commas before parentheses
    Remove any spaces after a paragraph mark
    I think that's it
    I did find this one recently (Maybe Jongware?)
    [~m~>~f~|~S~s<~/~,~3~4%]{2
    Which from my dim understanding addresses em, en, flush and hair space ,  nonbreaking space ,figure space,third space--not sure of the rest. Really this is way over my head.
    I know this will be a piece of cake for you guys
    Thanks

A: Removing extra spaces from a long document

Peter is too modest, he's doing just great.
No space BEFORE-One Space after ---period,semicolon,colon, exclamation, question mark,CLOSING Parenth,Bracket,Brace, single & Dbl. quotation marks
Find (\s)([.,;:!\)\]\}~}~]])
Replace with $2
No space AFTER-One Space Before----OPENING bracket,brace,parenthesis,Dbl & single quotes
Find ([\[\{\(~{~[])(\s)
Replace with $1
These remove the space before/after but do not automatically add a space after/before.
In the first case, you could add a space right after the '$2' in the Replace With string, but it already may have a space, in which case you suddenly have two. One alternative is to optionally remove it with the Find string (add it as an optional match) and always add it with the Replace string, but remember that this string will only be found if there is a space preceding it. That way you'd only check the space after in cases where there was a bad space before.
So I propose you add another two find/changes to add the space, only when necessary.
One Space After: find
([.,;:!\)\]\}~}~]])(?!\s)
replace:
$0 [followed by one single space]
One Space Before: find
(?<!\s)([\[\{\(~{~[])
replace:
[one single space] $0
Color-coding with my WhatTheGrep might make it just a tad clearer what's going on in that jumble of codes:
(1 [ .,;:! \) \] \} ~} ~] ] 1) (?!! \s !)
and
(?<!<! \s <!) (1 [ \[ \{ \( ~{ ~[ ] 1)
(Orange is lookahead/lookbehind, blue is a regular escaped character, pink is an InDesign special character, green is normal grouping parentheses, and lavender is a character group.)

  • How do you remove the extra space from the top margin when printing from a website? Already reset Firefox and checked my settings. Using Firefox 18 & Windows 8

    I have a 2" space at the top of pages that I print from websites. How do I remove the extra space? My margin settings are at .5"

  • Extra space between paragraphs: is there a way to delete that?

    I am importing text from a word document to format in InDesign. It' 150 pages of a book that I'll layout.
    I made a mistake when writing the book with word by creating a space between every paragraph, which I now want to get rid of.
    Is there a way to automate this with InDesign? Is there some way to automatically delete the extra space betwen my paragraphs and add an indent instead?

    Hi craigatadobe12345
    You can do it by by seaching "^p^p" in find and replace "^p^t" with Find/Replace window. This will remove the extra line and set a tab to indent the text.
    Please find below the screenshot of the same. Hope it helps...

  • How do I remove extra space after an image in an ePub created with InDesign?

    I've designed more than a dozen ebooks with InDesign and have recently been having problems with the spacing after images, both images that are anchored in the text or stand-alone and exported through the Articles Panel. Following are a few details:
    • In the Object Export Settings, I have the vertical spacing set to 0 both before and after the images and no breaks added.
    • In the Export panel, I do not have any vertical spacing applied to images.
    • I do not have any Object Style settings applied.
    • It doesn't seem to matter if I anchor the image into the text or have it as a stand-alone image in the Articles Panel with the caption after it in a separate text box, also in the Articles Panel.
    • I broke down the ePub into an html file and did not see any div or span classes that were different between images that are showing correctly vs. incorrectly.
    • Extra space appears in both iBooks on my computer, as well as on my iPad.
    • I converted to a mobi file for the Kindle and the space wasn't there.
    See attached screen shot. There shouldn't be that big gap between the image and the orange caption.
    Any help or suggestions anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I've tried everything I can think of with the same results over and over!

    Yes. That is the technique I traditionally use to drop an image into text. I even cut and pasted again as you suggested with the same result. Trust me, this is driving me nuts. I'm not doing anything different than before, but my results are different, even within the same document. I'll attach a few examples, all from this same document.

  • Script for Required fields acting strange on extra spaces at end of Name/Description

    Found this script on this forum, which I added to my submit button.
    var emptyFields = [];
    for (var i=0; i<this.numFields; i++) {
         var f= this.getField(this.getNthFieldName(i));
         if (f.type!="button" && f.required ) {
              if ((f.type=="text" && f.value=="") || (f.type=="checkbox" && f.value=="Off")) emptyFields.push(f.name);
    if (emptyFields.length>0) {
         app.alert("Error! You must fill in the following fields:\n" + emptyFields.join("\n"));
    Great script but the ERROR! popup was not coming up until I went into InDesign and removed extra spaces after "(g)" Description and Names.
    I am new at this, can someone let me know of any rules for naming these fields such as using underscores, or any other illegal chacters.

    Jeff,
    The SQL in the script file is below.  To be honest, I have reduced it down to a simple select from dual and it still puts extra spaces at the end of the single line.
    col ord noprint
    spool test.csv
    SELECT  ' ' ord,
      'ZONE_ORDER_NUMBER'||','||
      'ZONE_NAME'||','||
      'ZONE_TYPE'||','||
      'DESCRIPTION'||','||
      'START_DATE'||','||
      'END_DATE'
    FROM dual
    UNION ALL
    SELECT zone_name ord,
      '"'||zone_order_number||'"'||','||
      '"'||zone_name||'"'||','||
      '"'||zone_type||'"'||','||
      '"'||description||'"'||','||
      '"'||TO_CHAR(start_date,'DD-MON-YY')||'"'||','||
      '"'||TO_CHAR(end_date,'DD-MON-YY')||'"'
    FROM zones
    ORDER BY ord;
    spool off

  • Firefox copy feature always adds extra space before or after when double clicking to select text

    I have only just started using Firefox but I've noticed a strange "feature" (I'm not sure if it's a feature or a bug, thus the quotes). I'm used to Opera and IE where by when I double click some text the text will be automatically selected. Firefox does something like this but for some reason I don't yet understand it adds an extra space at the beginning or end of the selection. This is a problem for someone like me who for work does a lot of copy and paste. I use web software that is intolerant of extra spaces and this feature/bug is going to end up causing some major issues.
    Is there a way to alter this behavior so that it behaves more like all my other computer programs? Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Not sure if this will help with your issue, but can try.
    In the URL bar type about:config
    Then change layout.word_select.eat_space_to_next_word to false.

  • How do I remove extra space between paragraphs

    I'm writing a research paper, and between paragraphs an extra line of space is added.  My professor isn't happy about this.  Help me eliminate the space.

    The default after paragraph spacing in Pages is 12 points. With a 12 point font, this puts a whole line-worth of space after each paragraph return. It is very easy to change this in the text inspector.
    If you don't want to have to remember to change it each time you open a new blank word processing document, create your own template. Open the blank template & set up your document with the line spacing, margins, headers, etc. as you'd like. Redefine all of the paragraph & character styles to have your desired font. You can set default wrap for any object as well as many other settings. Insert a table, click in it & choose the font, size, color, etc. you want in the fonts panel or format bar. You can do similar changes to inserted objects & text boxes. While you're at it resize the box if you want, set the amount of extra space in the wrap inspector, etc. Delete each text box, object & table after you've set them.
    Now, save this document as a template & select that template as default in preferences. If you decide to make any changes to the template down the road, just Save As Template again with the same name & replace the previous version. All of your new documents will have these settings for inserted objects, images & tables. Unfortunately, the settings won't apply to any other templates or "foreign" documents you open with Pages.

    Hey,
    I know this will sound strange but ive been noticing my Har Disk space automatically going up. It was 80 GB yesterday, this morning it was 120 GB and now its 152 GB !! I havent deleted anything and i have no idea what files are being deleted ! is anyone else facing this ? Should i be worried ? Or should I just enjoy the new found leg room !!
    Thanks,
    Maahir

    So would time machine cause the finder to show me additional memory ? Also strangely when I check the space thru system information, it shows me around 60 go which is more or less what it should be. But the status bar at the bottom of finder windows and the info for the macintosh HD both show the extra 90 gb

    I guess, in your case doing a TRIM will be more beneficial to be safe and prevent any left spaces in future.
    For intermediate spaces... try this.
