Unplayably bad stuttering in Unity/Mono games -- kernel regression?

hi folks,
I'm fairly new to Arch, so bear with me here -- I'm running Gnome 3 with gdm, on the newest kernel / mesa / etc. from pacman. i5-4300Y with haswell graphics. have had this system running for a few weeks. when I first got it, everything was working OK, except I noticed that performance was implausibly bad in a handful of steam games -- like 2-3 frames per second bad. thinking on it, this seems to be only games that make use of the Unity or Mono middleware.
originally, I was running lightdm, and I thought it was narrowly possible that might be the issue, since I know upstream Gnome 3 doesn't really support anything other than gdm at this point. I switched to gdm, and the problem seemed to go away, but in hindsight, that might've been the same time as I updated from 3.18.2 to 3.18.3 or 3.18.4 (sorry I can't isolate this better, but I'm at least certain it was one of those).
however, the issue has come back this week, though I noticed I'm now on 3.18.5 -- so that might be it? I guess it no longer seems like it could be a lightdm issue, since I'm still on gdm, and I don't think it's an upstream mesa issue, since I'm running git mesa (newer than the bleeding edge unstable releases in arch sources) on my Ubuntu box which also uses Intel graphics, and it's not showing any of the same issues (but it's on a 3.13 kernel).
other games perform fine, so I don't think it's an issue with my GPU somehow underclocking itself. it's just Unity/Mono stuff. the games in question have not updated over this time period (or at least, all of them haven't updated the Unity/Mono runtimes such that this is plausibly the issue).
any thoughts? thanks!

Sorry to bump this thread, but I'm still having the issue -- kernel's only been bumped from 3.18.5 to 3.18.6 in the past month, so I suppose it could be a kernel regression that's still unfixed, but I'm really skeptical that this could be a kernel problem. Anyone have any thoughts? It's a mystery to me...
I'll note that this machine is also powertopped, though the issue persists when I disable all of the powertop optimizations to test.

  • Bad hop in connection to game server from Tampa area in FL

See my trace below from PingPlotter. It shows a bad connection at hop 6 to teliasonera. I talked to a few friends that have helped me along this far, but they don't know how to resolve a bad hop. This has been happening for almost a week now to a server in Chicago. Destination ip is 50.31.112.213. Anyone have any clues on how to begin to fix the hop so that I can maintain a better ping on this game server? Thanks in advance for your help. Target Name: chi.lowpinggameservers.com

  • Audio book badly stuttering/skipping

I am so frustrated over the trouble I have had with my audio books, the main reason I wanted my Ipod. I had no problem getting the audio books on the Ipod, but when I play them back on the Ipod every so often they stutter so badly you can't even understand what the person reading the book is saying. I read a post that said that too large of a file size caused it, but through trial and error, no file size even down to the original files from the cd's uncombined at 3-5 meg each made any difference. I also saw a post where someone said time length could cause this problem, but again, after experimenting with different times down to the original 30-40 min per file, it made no difference either.I have tried converting the mp3 files to the AAC format, with no change. I don't know what else to do. Does anyone know what the cause and the fix for this problem are? It's totally frustrating to me that I can play a 7 gig movie file without a hitch, but the much smaller audio book files have and are still giving me fits. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
I have a similar problem with music files 'stuttering' or 'jittering' and it's particularly noticeable during quieter tracks. Almost sounds like crackles or pops in the background.
The interesting thing is that I played the same problematic files on the same machine using Windows Media Player and they were rock steady perfect!? Suggests to me an issue with the iTunes software. I was similarly tempted to reinstall iTunes and the audio drivers, but I see this didn't help another friend here with the same problem.
Th eproblem has come about since I transferred all music to my new computer running Windows 7 64 bit and wonder if there is an issue with the latest iTunes 64 bit version software??
    Any thoughts/advice please? Regards.

  • Just Got v. 7.0.1.8 and got BAD STUTTERS

I was using what I believe is version 7.0 of iTunes and it was Great. Today it prompted me to upgrade to version 7.0.1.8... And now ALL my music is stuttering and skipping like a scratched CD. It doesn't happen in the same place all the time. It's not even a pattern (always in the same time spot on each of the tracks).
I don't know what to do. I tried troubleshooting and nothing is working. I have read other posts and I don't know if anyone has come up with a solution. I am thinking of restoring my system to back to before this download. Ugh.
    Any suggestions?!?!

  • Intel 82579V NIC problem - kernel regression?

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded my desktop motherboard to an Asus Maximus GENE-IV, which has the Intel 82579V Gigabit NIC. I installed arch the usual way, dd-ing the latest install image onto a USB stick, and what have you. Trouble is, as soon as I upgrade the kernel and reboot, my NIC stops working in a peculiar manner. It will come up after I do 'sudo ip link set eth0 up', and acquire a carrier. Then, after about ten seconds, the carrier drops. Then it'll come back up again... and drop again. Over, and over, and over. This does not happen with kernel 3.0.3, which is the kernel installed by the latest install image, but it happens with every kernel from 3.0.7 onward (3.0.7 is the oldest kernel I have available to test with, from /var/cache/pacman/pkg on another machine). The most frustrating thing is that I've been googling the problem for two days now, and I can't find anyone who has quite the same issue
The driver is e1000e, and it's autoloaded. My system is an x86_64 one. Has anyone experienced this themselves or heard of it anywhere else? I'd like to avoid manually building the intel driver sources if it's at all possible, because it works fine with an old kernel. /frustration
Edit: dmesg is flooded with "e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up" messages.
Edit: further weirdness: when I set a static IP on boot from rc.conf, the interface stays up, but I can only see machines on my local network - DNS does not work, even after putting a nameserver entry into resolv.conf and rebooting.
Edit: I did a clean install, marked the linux kernel as a package not to be upgraded, and did a pacman -Syu. Even with the old 3.0.3 kernel, after the update, my NIC is broken in exactly the same way. I'm really stumped on this!

Works fine here, same driver, static IP though.

  • Kernel regression : iwl-legacy/4965 not performing well with 4965AGN.

Hey guys I just updated the kernel26 package via pacman not too long ago and noticed after upgrade I had worse than usual wireless performance.
    I upgraded from 2.6.38-ARCH to 2.6.39-ARCH.
Heres an output of iwconfig :
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"MySSID"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: MyMac
    Bit Rate=24 Mb/s Tx-Power=14 dBm
    Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Power Management:off
    Link Quality=55/70 Signal level=-55 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:5 Invalid misc:33419 Missed beacon:0
I notice that there is a large Invalid misc value and the connection even had a couple of Tx excessive retry errors, I also notice that my wireless bandwidth is quite weak (I had a G rate of 54 Mb/s pre upgrade). I used speedtest.net to check my internet speed and noted that my connection speed had halved (7 mbit as opposed to 15).
Oh and if this helps here is an output of dmesg |grep 4965 :

I connect to my network with WPA2(AES) encryption and I'm using NetworkManager for my networking management.
If theres any other info that I should share to help solve this problem please let me know.
(P.S. I'm a new convert to Arch and I've been finding it great!)

  • Strange micro stuttering in games with new keyboard

I recently upgraded my keyboard to one with mechanical switches and a much higher polling rate at 1000 Hz /1 ms.
After switching over to this keyboard, I'm getting strange fps microstutters in games. Not sure how to diagnose and fix this issue.
I've done some simple A/B tests with the same game and my old Logitech K120 USB membrane keyboard and the new keyboard also changing USB 2.0 ports even trying on 3.0 and PS/2 via a USB to PS/2 adapter, although the keyboard wont work via PS/2 (PS/2 hook is enabled via mkinitcpio and a regular PS/2 keyboard works).
With the old keyboard everything is buttery smooth with a high frame rate, the new keyboard causes strange stuttering in almost all games, although I have the same frame rates.
The new keyboard is a CM Storm Quickfire TK, which I'm assuming is putting out a hardware based 1000hz polling rate over USB?
Would there be anyway to lower the polling rate of the keyboard to test if that is the cause of the issue? Can only seem to find info on changing mouse polling rate.
The only other hardware connected to USB is a Razer Deathadder mouse running at 450 DPI & 500Hz, using the razercfg drivers from AUR.
I've tried lowering the polling rate of the mouse to 125Hz and also disabling razerd.service but the issue still stands.
Currently running Arch on a FX 6350 CPU, GA-970-DS3 Gigabyte board and a Nvidia GT 660.
    Any suggestions?

Since no one else has any idea, just a shot in the dark from me: you could try the linux-ck kernel from the AUR and see if it helps… It hugely increased the framerate of Serious Sam 3 for me, and also removed some stuttering in Bit.Trip Runner 2. However I have no idea what polling rate my keyboard has; most probably it’s just the usual rate because it’s not a gaming keyboard.

  • GS60 GTX 860m Stuttering... Badly

Hi guys. I got my Laptop a little over 6 months ago and I've noticed some stuttering issues in some games. They were only with certain games, and they were few, so I thought nothing of it. Now it seems like a lot more games are stuttering. I'm talking like, I'm playing a game, the screen freezes for a second or two, and my character continues to walk forward into something and die. then the screen unfreezes. Sorry if this has already been addressed, but this is quite bothersome. Any suggestions/help? No, I'm not running an SLI setup. Only one GTX 860M. I do not believe it is a heat issue, as it does it during really simple games (Terraria being one of them.) and I have it sitting on a laptop fan. It doesn't even feel hot or really all that warm.
I can give any other info needed.

  • Mono applications crashing on start

I am not able to start any of the games writen in mono I own . They all crash when I try to start them. The dump is also always similar, but different libs seem to fail depending on the game.
I removed all of mono (-Rc), reinstalled it, tried removing pulseaudio (on a whim,  because I saw a post from someone for whom pulse was the culprit), I installed steam and tried starting the games for which I had keys from there ... to no avail. Apart from that my system is rock-stable, so now I'm a bit at a loss.

  • Casual Game Advice?

    Hi there experts,
Does anyone have any wise words to share about releasing a casual game created with Director? Getting a Director created game onto BigFishGames.com etc...
I've done many shockwave webgames, but am looking into this area and wanted to avoid any common pitfalls.
Also, does anyone know a workaround to the full 3:4 screen game on a wide-screen monitor distortion issue? (other than creating two separate versions, one with slightly distorted sprites to counter the issue). Many games like Airport Mania don't bother, but Peggle Nights seems to have a work around (not a Director creation though I know) but only when 3d acceleration is set to one which infers it is a 3D x axis scaling trick.
I'm using buddyAPI to test resolution swapping, and realize this is a sensitive area for many users. So many casual games though, including Peggle, change res without asking the user, so is this less of a taboo nowadays?
Any thoughts or advice much appreciated!
    Richard

    Thanks for the good advice.
I have been keeping a very close eye on Unity (feels like so many others have already swapped) and had my finger hovering over the buy button at one point. However, reading the small print you can't export iPhone games with the PC version which was one of the attractions to making the shift to C# and the whole new way of working. Future changes like coding Unity C# within Visual Studio still seem some way off, and I'm mildly nervous about having the whole thing based on MONO with the patent issues hanging over it. There was a scare with the iPhone games too with many developers having Unity based games temporarily banned from the Apple App store recently.
If you could export iPhone games on the PC version I probably would have changed over, but many of the casual games I plan to make will be 2D, which Director is still OK at. I think Unity would be superb if I was Mac / Maya based, but coming from a PC background using Lightwave3D (which still has export issues with Unity) I have been put off for now.
Cheers, and thanks for taking the time to reply.

  • FOUND SOLUTION FOR dv7 4121er STUTTERING SOUND!!!

    Alright. Sorry for bad english.
I got new Pavilion dv7 4121er with stuttering sound/glitching/laggy games from the box. Lurking this forum got and try many different solutions for resolving this issue. Nothing work.
So let me be close to the problem - i just noted (thanx for RamonGutierrez on this forum for idea) that my HDD led very often turn red\orange and right for that - i got slow performance in gaming\loading stuff etc. So definetely something wrong with HDD. Then, lurking more - HP got utility "HP 3D Drive guard". This utility prevent damage for HDD in case of laptop just dropped on the floor. This utility parking heads of HDD and do it VERY often. So i just turn this utility OFF (unintall or just disable i think it's no difference). And restart PC. Gues what? NO MORE RED HDD LED. Just virgin white when data transmitted, NO AUDIO STUTTERING AT ALL (at least 4 hour with BFBC 2 and GTA 4 testing) and no laaaag or long loading in games!
Hope this is the solution! Worked for me anyway! Good luck!

Apparently HP 3D DriveGuard is already disabled for me (I never messed around with it and it was already disabled) yet I still have the problem. Why do I think this guy is just making false claims, possibly working for HP to make people keep their defective computers with the hope of a fix?
    You got me buddy!
In fact, I do not agitate anyone had not returned their laptops and wait for a solution. I was going to return the laptop. Just in Russia is not so simple. I just described the solution that helped me personally on my laptop model. I'm not saying that it fit all. But I see that this solution has worked not only for me.
And then - you say yourself that the HDD light continues to blink red/orange! That because HDD STILL parking his heads all the time. Why? I dunno... Maybe someone else do. Try to ask RamonGutierrez - hi's just replace HDD in laptop - and problem was solved. Still im sure that was NOT IDT Audio Codec bug in my case.

  • SPLIT: GX740 verry annoying stuttering issue

    Hi
Sorry to hi-jack this thread but I have the exact same problem as Dan1987 my games lag, Ive tried to do a system restore but nothing happens when I use the f3 key
it tells me that my C drive will get delete and I've clicked OK and it does not do any thing then my system gets rebooted back to win7 with nothing deleted.
I've also tried to make some restore Cd's but all I get is an error (split process occur false) and that's it no Cd's

Here are the pictures of what happens when I try to recover my system or make recovery cd's then there is my stuttering problem in my games which I think is a
    hardware problem.
    1) just starting
    2) clicking ok to the options
    3) confirming that its ok to delete every thing from drive C:
    4) Don't touch the keyboard
    5) no hard drive activity
    6) Reboot
    7) Back to windows 7 with no changes
I get this error while trying to make my recovery cd's
Now I have my hidden partition always mounted
Sorry for the bad pictures I only had my Iphone to hand

  • Constant FPS drops paired with sound stutter on litterally every game I play

    Hey everyone.
So for quite a long time now I've been getting framerate drops in litterally every game I play.
    MSi GE60
    CPU: i7-3630QM
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeFoce GTX 660M
The FPS drops are always paired with sound stuttering, be it the game sounds or music I'm listening to. It really makes it impossible to play, I've tried dealing with it for a long time now but it's been getting on my nerves immensely lately.
    Games it's happened on:
    Path of Exile
    League of Legends
    World of Warcraft
Hearthstone (!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, really? Hearthstone? I can't run the simplest card game? :/)
I know my laptop isn't a top tier laptop but even on the very lowest settings I can't seem to run any game smoothly. And it isn't just FPS drops, it's pretty much always. Some games, like Path of Exile, it's even on a constant like 5 FPS which makes it impossible to play.
And yes, I'm running the games on the Nvidia. I've tried multiple things, I even reset my laptop to factory settings and it's still this bad.
It wasn't happening when I had just bought the laptop, as far as I can remember. It's about a year old now and it's been happening for, say, 8 months or so.
If someone has experienced/solved this issue, please try and help me out. If you need more information, ask (and tell me where/how to find it, I'm pretty bad with laptops/PCs), and I'll post it.
    Thanks in advance!

Most likely the heatsinks aren't seated properly or the heatsink compound wasn't applied correctly.
This is fairly common, and I had the same problem with my GT70 0NE when I purchased it.
It's fairly easy to remove open the bottom of the laptop up, remove the heatsinks and clean and re-apply the thermal compound, and then re-seat the heatsinks. Takes maybe 30 minutes if you're slow and careful like me.
If you don't feel good about doing it, then I suggest doing an RMA.
    >>How to contact MSI.<<
ALSO, as long as you don't screw anything up inside the laptop, the warranty will still be good. Don't worry about the sticker on the bottom. It's mainly there to keep people from opening it up, but you have to be able to in order to add more memory or another HDD/SSD.

  • Kernel Panic on Mac Pro 1,1

Hi all, I've searched these boards for some time now, but don't seem to be finding an answer to my questions...
    *The Unit:*
    +MacPro1,1 - Dual-Core Intel Xeon - 2.66 GHz - 4 GB - ROM-version: MP11.005D.B00 - SMC-version (systeem): 1.7f10 – External Hardware: ACD (USB and FW plugged in) Apple non aluminium USB Keyboard and Wacom A5 Wide pen tablet.+
This particular Mac has been in for repairs on the videocard, a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. The symptoms related to that problem are from a different nature, so I don't think the card has gone bad again.
    *The Problem:*
Having kernel panics regularly for some time now (3 last week). I couldn't determine what it was other than broken RAM (I had 6 slots 2*1GB; 4*512MB of original Apple Ram). I tested this RAM using Rember overnight. When I entered the office, the Mac had the grey curtain all over the screen. So this was replaced last monday with 2*2GB Crucial Apple certified RAM. It ran good for 2 and a half days — just got a new Kernel Panic. So... not the RAM, but then what?
The Kernel Panics had all sorts of BSD processes connected to the problem. The last one (which I unfortunately send to Apple before saving it in a txt file) stated Adobe inDesign as the problem. Other panics pointed at window server, wacom driver and so on, I haven't seen a lot of the same processes passing by, it's a different process most of the time.
These are some other Panics I saved, could you please take a look at it and give me an idea of what the problem might be? My Wacom is running the latest driver btw.

In case you need it......the usual offering.......
Bad or incompatible RAM is, more often then not, the cause of most Kernel Panics. It could also just need to be reset.
Here's the most used site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here is a great MacFixIt article.

  • Kernel 2.6.24 and UVesaFB

I have recently installed fbsplash from the AUR, and would like to use uvesafb, now included in the vanilla kernel. Now I am wondering why I can't get any higher than 640x480. When I try and put in a line with something else, it is just ignored. DonGiovanni has told me that it has been compiled in as a module and that it may be related to the problem. I don't want to compile my own kernel because it takes much too long. Anyone know how to fix this?

Hello, the problem for me is this: I have kernel26 (2.6.24.1-2) from Core (installed with pacman -S), and i have installed v86d from aur. So my framebuffer works only if i modprobe uvesafb manually after boot, in tty1, for example if i load it in gnome-terminal, it go in Segmentation Fault.
But the problem is that i would put uvesafb in the Initramfs, so i have changed few config's files.
    This is my files config:
    /lib/initcpio/hooks/uvesafb
    run_hook ()
    /sbin/modprobe uvesafb
    /lib/initcpio/hooks/v86d
    run_hook ()
    /sbin/v86d
    /lib/initcpio/install/v86d
    install() {
    MODULES=" $(checked_modules "video/uvesafb") "
    SCRIPT="v86d"
    MODULES=$(echo ${MODULES}) #trim whitespace
    if [ -n "${MODULES}" ]; then
    MODULES="${MODULES}"
    fi
    add_dir "/dev"
    add_dir "/root"
    add_dir "/sbin"
    add_device "/dev/console" c 5 1
    add_device "/dev/tty1" c 4 1
    add_device "/dev/zero" c 1 5
    add_device "/dev/mem" c 1 1
    add_binary "/sbin/v86d" "/sbin/v86d"
    help() {
echo "This hook sets up v86d, the userspace helper for uvesafb."
    # vim: set ft=sh ts=4 sw=4 expandtab:

    /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
    # vim:set ft=sh
    # MODULES
    # The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
    # run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
    # in this array. For instance:
    # MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
    MODULES="ata_generic ata_piix piix ide_disk ext3"
    # BINARIES
    # This setting includes, into the CPIO image, and additional
    # binaries a given user may wish. This is run first, so may
    # be used to override the actual binaries used in a given hook.
    # (Existing files are NOT overwritten is already added)
    # BINARIES are dependancy parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
    BINARIES="/sbin/modprobe /sbin/v86d"
    # FILES
    # This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
    # as-is and are not parsed in anyway. This is useful for config files.
    # Some users may wish to include modprobe.conf for custom module options,
    # like so:
    # FILES="/etc/modprobe.conf"
    FILES="/etc/modprobe.conf"
    # HOOKS
    # This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
    # modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
    # Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
    # order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
    # help on a given hook.
    # 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
    # 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
    # 'modload' may be used in place of 'udev', but is not recommended
    # 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
    # Examples:
    # This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
    # No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
    # HOOKS="base"
    # This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
    # work as a sane default
    # HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems"
    # This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
    # No autodetection is done.
    # HOOKS="base udev ide scsi sata usb filesystems"
    # This setup assembles an ide raid array with an encrypted root FS.
    # Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H raid' for more information on raid devices.
    # HOOKS="base udev ide raid encrypt filesystems"
    # This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
    # HOOKS="base udev usb lvm2 filesystems"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect v86d uvesafb dsdt ide pata scsi sata usbinput keymap filesystems"
I have already tried to put uvesafb in MODULES, but the result is the same.
