Unplugging scanner crashes iMac!
Hi
I have a Umax Astra 2100U Scanner plugged into my iMac (OS9.2) and if I turn it off or unplug it, the iMac freezes. Similarly, if I switch on the iMac without the scanner plugged in, it starts up as normal, and then after about 5 seconds of Finder being fully started iMac freezes.
So basically, I have to have the scanner permanently switched on and plugged in which is driving me mad - even more so now that I desperately need to free up the USB port which it's using - ARGH!
Any suggestions? I'd be very grateful!
Caroline
Hi Caroline
Thanks for posting this. You may well have answered a question for me.
I have a client running 9.1 on a G3 tower, Just lately it has started to crash a few seconds after the desktop loads.
She also has a Umax astra - but she has recently unplugged it and left it off!
Coincidence or what?
I know it doesn't answer your question but at least you've given me someting to work on. If I get this sorted I'll let you know.

Which is better HP or Epson scanner for iMac 27"?
HP or Epson best scanner for iMac 27"?
Put it this way:
I have a 6 year old Epson scanner that has sucessfully scanned 16,000+ photos, plus umpteen documents.
If for some reason I was faced with having to buy another scanner, Epson would be first place I would look. Canon would be second (love their printers), HP would be last.
Please don't ask me why, this is a purely subjective gut-feeling opinion! -
Hi, I have an early 2008 24 inch iMac, 3.06GHz C2D, 4G Ram,OSX 10.8.2. I read a lot in this forum regarding Flash crashes iMac. It happens to me recently when I watch CNN news video, my iMac would shutdown unexpectedly. I beleive that CNN video uses Flash plugin, that might be the issue, but what I don't understand is that I can watch Hulu movies for hours without any issues, doesn't Hulu uses Flash as well? Perhaps some web engineer at CNN uses Flash the wrong way?

I recently got a new iMac and did the set up THEN I took it to the store to have my backup data loaded onto my new iMac from my old crashed iMac. Now I have 2 login accounts on my new iMac. The old one has my iTunes and iPhoto libraries and my new login is empty. Is it possible to move the libraries and the other data to my new login and delete the old one?
I've done something a little different but have the same problem, sort of. I had been with AT&T for years and had iphones but I switched to VZ wireless quite a while back and got a droid. I just switched back and got the iphone 4S and was downloading apps from the phone having forgot I already had an iTunes account so I created another one.
After doing the above (which I'm not sure where to even start) is it possible to get all of the songs from my old account loaded onto my new phone (I haven't even attempted it yet because I don't know where to start)? -
WD My Book Pro Edition II crashes iMac consistently
Has anyone else had problems with their late-edition My Book Pro Edition II from Western Digital, as follows?
-- Drive cannot be seen through the Firewire 400 connection, no matter what, and in spite of their claims that it's a three-interface drive (USB, Firewire 400, Firewire 800). Is this false advertising?
-- Drive will crash iMac consistently when connected through USB. Although the Mac will see the drive when connected through USB, any drive operations may simply crash the computer at random. This isn't a light crash, where an application or file operation goes kaput, this is an all-system crash where the gray screen of death comes on, with the official notice that the computer needs to be reset.
-- MyBook RAID Manager also crashes computer the same way, and at random.
-- The drive itself will overheat and shut down randomly, causing any file transfers to be lost.
Please let me know if you've had the same problems. I'd hate to think I was the only one. My iMac manages to work fine otherwise, but when I connect the drive, bad things happen, as described above. I wrote about this in more detail here, if you should be interested.DaddyPaycheck and Miriam, thank you for your suggestions. I've been contacted by one of the senior VPs of PR at Western Digital, and he has promised to put me in touch with more advanced tech support in the US, to see if my problem can't be resolved. It seems my blog posts and videos got some well-deserved attention. We'll see where this new development leads. I'll keep this post marked as unresolved until I have a definitive solution for my issues, and will update it as needed.
I've had great success with the OWC NewerTech Stack enclosures, the ones that have a built-in Firewire and USB hub. I've had two of them for over 2 years now, and they work great. I've replaced the drives inside them as bigger drives became less expensive, and they've held up quite nicely. I also have a Porsche-designed LaCie that has been working non-stop for about two years as well, and now I have three 500 GB LaCie drives that I recently bought. They work great as well. I also really like my Drobo, which I bought to store my photo library. The only drive I'm having problems with is the My Book Pro Edition II, which is why I keep trying to get its problems resolved. -
Scanner crashes. CanoScan 9000F, 13" rMBP, OS 10.8.4
Hi –
The hardware/software:
13" Retina MacBook Pro running OS 10.8.4
CanoScan 9000F scanner, using MP Navigator 3.1
The problem:
MP Navigator 3.1 crashes whenever I try to scan film - specifically in the Grayscale color mode. Whenever I try to scan film in the Color mode, the software acts completely normal. MP used to work flawlessly, but then randomly the problem arose.
Can anyone help?
Thanks. On day 3 of mountain lion taming I have got to finding out what still works and what doesn't
My Canon lide 500f works fine with VueScan 9 x32 (9.0.70) - probably actually UB - activated using the TWAIN option in GraphicConverter and after a bit of plugging/unplugging, but nothing new there. That is for the 35mm negative accessory. For Flatbed, the Image Capture option is simpler. No need for non-existant 64bit driver or workarounds.
I very rarely use CS4,(only if layers are absolutely essential), but that works too; no idea what the Java 6 thing is about, just install it. Latest FocusMagic now works in GraphicConverter too in about a 1/10th of the time it did in CS 32bit -
Need help troubleshooting a crashing iMac
[yay! my own new thread!]
About my iMac:
Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz, 4 GB
What I've done so far:
1. Run disk utility - checked permissions, verified disk; nothing
2. Opened activity monitor - nothing out of the ordinary: 1.6 GB memory free, etc.
3. Opened console - not quite sure what to look for, but there are definitely a lot of files; apparently I don't have a lot of Pageouts
4. Booted in safe mode; Run disk utility. Sometimes I get an error that is apparently nothing to worry about.
5. At least once, I forgot I was still in Safemode and it crashed. At one point, expose crashed it while in safemode. I don't use expose often,
6. Checked system preferences nothing interesting in the 3rd party pref panes
7. Found files in
/private/var/run/StartupItems
/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/LaunchDaemons
- some are not apple related but I'm not sure if it's safe to delete
One thing to note / not sure what it means:
- all crashes are not created equal. Variations include:
a. spinning beachball
b. unresponsive windows (can move the cursor/mouse around but nothing responds)
c. gray screen after trying to restart
d. a mailbox that doesn't load properly/the bottom part is black with a band of distortion
- should I unplug *everything* and turn off iCloud on the iMac?
See what happens? [not tossing the machine off the cliff yet...]
Thank you everyone!
- CarolynCan't remember, really.
Now it just crashes a lot. in multiple ways.
A new one this morning: gray screen with the spinning wait thing....(previously just a blank gray screen).
I am starting to wonder if there are major sync issues - too many iOS / old Mobile me / iWorks->Pages / address / mail (including Outlook), too many hard drives attached / time machine, etc.
Things are a lot faster if I log in as a guest and not me.
How do I narrow down the search? -
I have an iMac with a Canon CS8600F Scanner attached. Due to space limitations - I cannot keep the scanner connected to the iMac continously. I am wondering if there is an issue or ramifications with connecting and disconnecting the scanner a few times a week when I need to scan documents? I am an recent convert from the Windows realm and I am accustomed to having the icon to safely remove hardware...is there a similar option on the iMac? Can anyone see any problems with my "plan"?
iMac 24" 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 3GB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.7) iPod 4G, Airport ExpressUSB/Firewire devices are fine
with "hot" plugging. Some devices, such as external
hard drives, digital cameras or an iPod do need to be
ejected before unplugging them in order to not damage
the formatting/data. This is simple to do. If the
device shows in a Finder window sidebar click the
arrow next to the icon, or highlight the icon and
press the eject button in the top right corner on the
Apple keyboard, or drag & drop the device's icon into
the trash. Once this is done it is safe to disconnect
the device.
Usually devices like printers and scanners do not
require this step before disconnecting.
Thanks David - it is a USB conenction and it does NOT displays in FINDER window with the little arrow. So I guess it is ok.

Xmas Nano not recognized by iTunes and ejecting crashes iMac HARD!
I hooked up my new 8Gb Nano and was notified I had to upgrade iTunes. Did that. Then a dialog box popped up telling me the Nano was not recognized and advising to disconnect and reconnect it. After doing this a half dozen times it was finally recognized. Tried to sync with iTunes and it froze on selection #19. Had to FORCE QUIT iTunes. As the Nano was telling me it is connected and needs to be ejected I did that in FINDER and the iMac had a hard crash. Had to force a power-down. I went through this absurdity 5 times with iTunes starting a sync at #19 then after deleting #19, it froze at selection #11, deleted that and it froze at #1. After each freeze and my tying to eject the Nano and getting 5 hard crashes I finally went to bed!
Today I trashed iTunes, downloaded it again and hooked up nano. Nothing. It was not recognized by iTunes but showed up in FINDER and the DESKTOP. Quit iTunes. I ignored ejecting it, disconnected it. Started iTunes again connected the Nano and got the spinning color wheel for about ten minutes. While I searched the net for solutions it finally stopped spinning but, the Nano is not listed in iTunes! It shows up on the desktop and in finder and the Nano is telling me it is connected and needs to be ejected. I'll try to eject it next but I'm sending this now as I've no confidence the mac won't have another hard crash!
This is pretty disappointing. I finally talked my brother in-law into abandoning the PC (as I did last year after a zillion years of PC frustration) and consider getting a new iMac. "All you have to do is hook up your Mac and it just works!!!" From what I'm seeing here and other places, the Nano/iTunes problem is not unusual, BUT I'm seeing nothing from Apple to address this issue. Is Apple becoming the next Microsoft? Who needs this crap?
Does there have to be a mass return of Nano's to get Apple's attention? I know mine goes back tomorrow!

I have followed every troubleshooting page on the apple support site yet my ipod nano 6th gen is not recognized by itunes
I have spent 3 days messing with my pc and have made no real progress.
Then it's time to call Apple tech support while you are still under warranty. Every iPod comes with complimentary, single-incident telephone technical support within 90 days of your iPod purchase. If you also purchased AppleCare, then your warranty is extended for technical support and hardware coverage for two years from the original purchase date of your iPod.

Crashing iMac with OS X 10.4.11
My iMac has been acting up recently. It has been freezing while I browse the internet, the mouse continues to move and the music continues to play but everything else stops. The only solution I have is to hold the power button. Today it crashed the normal way once then a couple minutes after I restarted the screen went black and orangish vertical bars flashed on the screen. I held the power button to turn it off.
What should I do to fix this problem?
I would greatly appreciate any help.

Hello,
I'm having issues with a new setup. I recently purchased a iMac Retina 27" -16Gigs Ram. I'm running just the operating system (Yosemite -latest 10.10.2 Update) and software on it's internal SSD. I have a rather large library of RAW, .psd and .psb files on external drives that I typically access with Bridge CC and Photoshop CC. I have an older Seagate 'Backup Plus' 3TB USB 3 external hard drive that works fine. I more recently bought a Lacie 'd2' 3TB Thunderbolt 2 drive, in the hopes that reading and writing files would be faster. I copied the files off of the Seagate Plus onto the Lacie d2. When I access my folders on the Lacie d2 (Thunderbolt 2) in Bridge CC after about 5 minutes the computer will first freeze, then restart. After restarting I don't receive an error message, and whichever programs I was running before the crash automatically launch again. If I access the same files on the Seagate Backup Plus (USB 3) I don't have this issue. I've spoken with Apple about this 3 times, restarted the iMac holding down shift, reset the Pram and they seem to think that it's an Adobe issue. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Bridge CC, restarting Bridge while holding down option and trashing the cache as well as deleting the cache files from the User/Library/Adobe/Bridge/Caches folder. I reformatted the Lacie d2 using Disk Utility. I also went back and separated the .psd and .psb files into smaller folders, as well as renaming files with possibly problematic names, i.e. 'Ocean.Beach.01.tif'. Hopefully someone has some other ideas about how I can fix this issue. Thanks for your help!I got it running today. I ran the uninstaller program in the Bridge folder and checked the box to remove preferences. Then I did a restart and reinstalled. Works!

I have a Canon MP460 connected to my iMAC however I am unable to scan. I can print perfectly and would like the scan capability to work. How do I get the scan to work?
It is impossible to assist you without knowing what version of OS X is installed on your computer. However if you are using OS X Lion 10.7.x or Snow Leopard 10.6.x please look at Printer and scanner software for Snow Leopard & Lion to see if your device is supported for scanning. If it is then try using Apple's Image Capture software, you will find that in the Applications folder.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE complete your profile. It's easy to do, just click Your Stuff in the upper right of this page, then click Profile and fill in the pertinent information. -
