Unread Mail Badge showing as a "Letter"

For some odd reason, Mail on my home Mac (Dual 867 G4 - MDD) has started displaying my unread mail indicator with a single letter, like the letter "D" for 1 unread or the letter "F" for 4 unread. This is occuring in both my Dock mail icon "badge" and in my mailbox sidebar.
Very odd. I am running Font Agent Pro 3.0.1 but I am not managing System Fonts with it.
Anyone heard of this before?

FYI, I just updated my Font Agent Pro to the latest 3.2.
Repaired permissions.
Still broken.

  • Can't get rid of unread mail icon--shows 2 unread messages but can't find any

I've got a smart mailbox that shows unread messages so I can easily see what new and unread mail I have.  The problem is it gives me the notification icon that indicates I have two unread messages, yet the mailbox does not show any messages as unread...  This isn't a huge problem, but the Mail icon in my dock always shows that I have new mail, and the notification icon is small enough that I can't always clearly see if it's the "usual 2" or a higher number.  What could be causing this and how do I either find the unread messages or get this icon reduced to where it only shows me REAL unread messages?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
    Envelope Index
    ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Unread mail badge

I have an iPhone 4S, USING iOS 6.0.1.  I operate three email accounts through my phone, one of which is a Microsoft Exchange account.  About a month ago I noticed there was a badege notifying me that I had 1 unread email in this Exchange account.  I  had learned to live with it that is, until today, as now the badge shows 5 unread emails from this Exchange account.
Any suggestions as to how to eliminate it?
    Much obliged.

  • Unread Mail badges won't go away

Mail v7 (1822). Anyone else have this issue? I have many folders set up within Mail. I have an IMAP account, but have Rules to transfer messages to folder On My Mac. What's started to happen is the badges that usually appear associated with the folder where the new, unread message has been moved, will not go away after the message is read.
Obvioulsy the result are a lot of badges on folders that contain all messages that have been read. The only way to fix this is the quit and restart Mail. Any thoughts, or anyone else with this problem?

I've been experiencing this on laptop running Windows 7.  Prior to a few months ago, I did not have any issues with this.  Skype version is the latest (6.11.0.102).  If I have multiple messages from same contact, I can get all but one notificationto go away for that contact by marking as read.  But I can't get the last one to go away.  Restarting Skype doesn't work, and rebooting laptop doesn't work.  It does eventually clear (in a day or two) but very frustrating until it does.  And it is random - doesn't happen all the time, and doesn't seem to happen on group messages.  If it is contact-specific, it is more than one contact that has issue.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Unread mail badge not updating

    Hi,
today I started using iCloud email.
I configured my new account on my iPhone 4 (iOS 5), on my iPad 2 (iOS 5) and on my Mac (10.7.2).
If I receive an email it is correctly pushed to all my devices and unread badge updates accordingly.
But if I read this email from my Mac badge continues to show I have an unread email.
    I found this link:
    http://macography.net/2011/10/unread-email-count-on-ios-with-icloud-and-mobileme
I hope it is not true because it would be very annoying.

Just solved this problem with Apple.  On all your iOS devices >preferences>icloud>storage & backup>
Turn on iCloud backup - this forces the sync
I had turned this off because I didn't want to use up storage but if I continue to backup to my computer it won't use up valuable space on icloud for this and my devices email now stay in sync.
Not a very clear way to solve this issue but it works.
    Thanks Apple.

  • Unread Mail Badge Count Incorrect

Since I installed IOS 8.2  my email icon is showing I have 40,202 unread emails when there is none.  It also keeps kicking me out of the app at times.  I have deleted the mail account, shut off ipad and re added the mail account and the unread number of 40,202 comes back.
I have also turned the account off, shut the ipad down, turned the account back on and the 40,202 is back !!!
                            iPad 2, iOS 8

What is probably happening is that the iPad gets the Notification with the right number of unread messages and will sit there. It will not update that number until it is either given updated information, or you open the Mail app in which case it checks.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, someone opens mail on the Mac and reads the emails. The status of the number of unread items changes but the iPad does not get an update as you possibly don't have Push and Notifications set correctly.

  • Leopard Mail Not Showing # Unread Messages in Dock Icon

For some inexplicable reason, my Leopard version of Mail has stopped showing unread message notifications. I still hear the mail ding, but there's no little red badge on the doc icon showing how many unread messages I have. And, yes, the "Dock unread count" is set to all mailboxes since I have multiple email accounts I check. Has anyone else had this problem and how do I fix it?

Jeff Greenberg's response was brilliant! Thanks Jeff.
I have had 2 "unread mail" items showing up for weeks and have been agonizing over what and where they were, how important the "unread" mail was, and what life experiences, deals, etc., I was missing out on. Creating a Smart Mailbox showing Unread mail worked - one caveat however: Add a second condition - that the the Unread Mail be in your INBOX (forgetting to add this condition this showed me HUNDREDS of unread mail items that resided in my OTHER Smart Mailboxes).
It worked. I found, read, and deleted my "unread mail" - Nothing important. Thanks again!

  • Why does my mail badge icon say I have 58 unread messages but when I look they are all read ?

Why can I not clear my unread emails mail badge, when I check I've read them all in both hotmail and iCloud accounts ?

    Phil0124 wrote:
    Why would you suggest this?
    1. You can't delete the mail app as its a preintalled Apple App.
    2.  Trying to delete it will do nothing to the message count.
Its better to not answer if you are not sure of your answers., and let someone else answer instead.
    Anyway atgreen:
Like Nathan-D suggests, Look in your other folders, like Junk or Spam  for unread emails there.
In the Mailboxes list scroll down to the list of accounts tap on each one to see all the folders and go through them to make sure there are no undread emails there.
He is sure of his answer. Reread the steps, he isn't suggesting to delete the app, but to close it. See the first step, "double click the home button", this brings up the open apps at the bottom. Holding on the mail app brings up the "-" to close Mail. If he were trying to delete an app, you get an "x", but Apple apps don't even show that "x".
Closing the app will cause it to reset the notification flags in the app, that is why it was suggested. If that doesn't work, then he may need to reset the iPad.
Your and Nathan-D's suggestion to check for unread messages in other folders is also valid, but it is only the inboxes that are reflected on the icon.

  • How to get Mail in iOS 7 to automatically clear unread email badge

I thought that the whole new background app refresh in iOS 7 would help this issue.....
I like that I can look at my iPhone 5s running iOS 7.0.2 and see that I have unread emails from the red badge on Mail
However, if I do not use the iPhone to read those emails and I instead use my iMac, I thought that the badges on the Mail icon on the iPhone would automatically clear with the combo of using the push server an background app refresh.
However, even if I read emails on my iMac, the Mail badge on the iPhone will not clear unless I launch Mail on he iPhone.
FB badges go away if I check FB on the computer.
    Why not Mail?
And is there any way to fix this?

To anyone else following this, David and I have exchanged emails. I am the only one seeing this behavior.
There just aren't that many things to tweak in Mail.
    1. General settings... nothing to do with this.
    2. Accounts... nothing relevent.
    3. Junk Mail... nada
    4. Fonts & Colors ... no
    5. Viewing... Show header detail -- Default, Display unread is selected. Others are not. (Message threading is selected)
    6. Composing... Plain Text, Check spelling as I type, Auto complete addresses (no LDAP configured), When sending to a group show all member addresses is selected, Quote the text and increase quote level are selected. and include selected text if any otherwise include all.
    not much there.

  • Mail icon shows (1) unread msg, but all msgs are read

Yesterday, my mail icon showed one unread message. When I clicked on the app, there were no new messages, but now the (1) won't go away. How do I get the (1) to go away?
    null

I also have the badge showing unread emails at a higher number than emails in my inbox. I think it may be because i deleted a number of emails from iPhone in box without opening them because i had already read them on my Mac. How can i reset. Home/sleep buttons don't do the job. Other remedies?

  • Removing unread mail count badge for Mail on the iMac

On my iMac I have a badge with a "2" on my Mail icon, indicating I have two unread messages.  I have thousands of emails in the inbox, and have scrolled through all of them but could not find an unread message.  I have tried using the command "Mark All Messages As Read" to no avail.  I have deleted the email account from Mail, and reinstalled it, also to no avail.  I know I should just ignore the badge, but it bugs me.  Mail on my iMac syncs with my iPad, iPhone, and MacBook Air.  The iMac is the only machine with the badge showing "2".
    Suggestions...??

    Please forgive my ignorance.
I have found Keychain Access but I don't understand what I have to do next.
    Which Category?  Passwords?
Also which one is the mail server?  imap.mail.yahoo.com or smtp.mail.yahoo.com (both have the same password)
    or any other enteries?
    Thanks for your help

  • Unread and read mail not showing in Mail after upgrading to Yosemite

    Hi there,
    I recently upgraded to Yosemite.
In the Mail app, mail is not showing up properly. I have unread mail, which is not showing up, despite me refreshing or sorting by unread first, and even an email I read this morning on Chrome isn't showing up, as you can see by screenshots.
How do I fix this issue?

    Hi,
In Mail > Mailbox dropdown menu, try clicking on Rebuild at the bottom.

  • Apple Mail Not Showing Inbox Unread Count on Dock after installing Mavericks

After installing Mavericks, my Apple Mail (connected to my work's Gmail account) stopped showing the Inbox's unread count on the dock. I switched it to "all mailboxes" to see if that would make a difference, and the dock shows 7 unread emails when there are actually none. When I switch it back to "Inbox" unread counts, it shows nothing. I've waited 15 minutes after receiving an email to see if it will show an unread message in the dock, but it does not. Does anyone have a fix for this?
    Thank you!

Quit your mail entirely, then in terminal do:
    mv ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope* ~/Desktop
This moves all your "Envelope Index*" files to your desktop.  An alternative is deleting the files, but this allows you to keep them as a temporary back-up (you can delete them at-will later).  Also, you can move the files from Finder instead of Terminal, if you prefer.
After the files have been moved, re-open Mail
This should re-load all your email messages, updating/restoring the count
While this works, it does not explain the reason the count goes missing, nor does it ensure that the count won't go missing again in the future, but at least it's a temporary workaround.

  • Show only unread mail

I am connected to my html email account.  I is on an Exchange server.  In outlook there is a folder called Unread Mail.  I have a lot of rules that filter my mail into folders so I use Unread Mail a lot in outlook.  I would prefer if my BlackBerry also looked at this folder to show my emails, this way I would get all of those that were filtered and not just the ones in the inbox.  Is there a way for me to do this?  I am running version 6.0 bundle 2426 of the BlackBerry software on my phone.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Anyone have any thoughts on a way to do what I am looking for?

  • TS3899 My mail account shows 1340 unread emails, yet the inbox is empty with no subfolders.

My "Mail" app shows that I have 1340 unread emails in red.  When I go to the inbox, it says 1340 unread emails, yet there is none in the inbox.  I have checked my mail provider adn there is no emails there either.

First if you have multiple inboxes please make sure that you're looking at the all inboxes category. If this is correct then try removing the account and adding it back. If no joy
    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.
