Unread messages in IMAP inbox not fetched unless quit & relaunch Mail.app

I posted a similar question re: same Mail.app behavior under 10.5.x , but it remains unresolved and for some reason the post has been archived so I can't follow up there. please see:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2096360&tstart=0
I want to re-ask the question here now that I've updated to 10.6.2 AND migrated to a brand new iMac, and tried some other debugging - yet my problem persists. Hopefully someone here can help
Problem:
- only affects 2 of 3 users on my iMac. On my main (admin) account, Mail.app works just fine.
but, on affected accounts:
- launching Mail retrieves all unread emails from IMAP account, as expected
- if Mail.app is then left running, any new incoming emails arriving on IMAP server are NEVER retrieved by Mail.app, regardless of the Preference setting of how often to check for mail
- clicking on the Get Mail button similarly fails to retrieve any new mail. it's as though Mail.app thinks there is no new mail on server
- meanwhile new mail on IMAP server is confirmed to exist (e.g. checking via webmail access)
- quitting and relaunching Mail.app then finds the waiting email and shows it in the Inbox, but after that no new emails are ever retrieved without quitting and relaunching again
- while stuck in this "there's no new email" state, rebuilding the Inbox causes unread email on IMAP server to be found and loaded to inbox, however once again after that no new email is ever seen until quit and relaunch (or rebuild inbox again)
debugging steps I have tried, none have changed the problem:
- deleting com.apple.mail.plist file
- rebuilding Inbox, as noted above
- moving ~/Library/Mail folder to desktop, then re-importing all mail messages
since the problem has followed the 2 users from my old iMac to new, it seems whatever is causing the problem was transferred by Migration Assistant. But for the life of me I can't find what's different between my working admin user account and the two other accounts. Perhaps there is some other mail-related settings file or folder that's been corrupted somewhere that I'm not aware of?
has anybody else noticed this behavior with Mail.app, or have other debugging suggestions?
thanks in advance

I get the same behavior, but only on one IMAP account and seemingly only after Mail.app has been running for a while. Once it gets in its wonky state, new incoming messages are ignored by Mail.app no matter how many times I tell it to resynchronize... If I restart Mail.app it will pick up new messages for a while, then stops at some point. My iPhone and webmail client have no problem getting the messages.
I have other IMAP accounts that always behave in Mail.app. So, I think something between Mail.app and particular IMAP servers is a little wonky, but not across the board.
<edit> My one misbehaving account is also a dreamhost account.. </edit>

  • New email in IMAP inbox doesn't show up in Mail.app - must quit & relaunch

I have a 24" iMac 2.33GHz running OS 10.5.7, with several user accounts on the machine. on my account (the main admin account), Mail seems to work just fine.
but on a couple other accounts, although Mail.app correctly shows new IMAP email in the inbox immediately upon launch, it doesn't always seem to notice new mail that arrives on the server later, AFTER the initial launch.
That is, whether the user later presses the Get Mail button or waits for Mail to periodically check for email (preference set to check every minute), it thereafter never shows any new mail arriving in the Inbox - this is even when I know for certain that there are unread new messages sitting in the inbox of the IMAP server (e.g. by confirming separately via webmail interface or via iPhone, but of course leaving the new message unread). This means the user who leaves Mail running in the background all day may never realize he has new email, Mail.app keeps showing no new mail unless he happens to quit and restart Mail later.
I believe this problem only started recently, perhaps after one of the recent system updates - I can't say for sure, but we only noticed this recently. And as I mentioned, I don't see this behaviour on my main account, I see new emails immediately. Also I use Mail.app on a different MacBook Pro and have never observed this behaviour - it is just on my iMac.
another observation, since the problem occurs on some accounts but not mine - I tried deleting the user's com.apple.mail.plist file and reconfiguring the offending account, in case a corrupted preference file was the culprit. but afterwards the problem remained so that doesn't seem to be it.
anyone else seen this or have a fix?
    thanks in advance.

I'm seeing the same behavior on a couple of the iMacs in our office. Do you know what mail server software you're using? I'm trying to figure out if it's a problem with the server software, using IMAP rather than POP3, or if it's Mail.
We're using Kerio Mail Server. Several of us have been using IMAP for over a year and had no problems. The two who are having problems also have thousands of messages in their Inbox whereas the rest of us never have more than a couple hundred.

  • IMAP email not checking until I open mail app

On my iPad 2 I have two email accounts, MobileMe and a personal domain. Iv noticed that the personal domain, set up using imap doesn't get mail until I open the app. MobileMe is fetching fine while the app is closed or locked.
I have it set to fetch and push. Any thoughts?

What have you got Fetch set to in Settings/Mail.../Fetch New Data/Fetch?
If you have Fetch New Data set to Push, then this is the setting that is used to determine the time between 'fetches' for accounts that don't use Push.

  • ...Not alone with problems on "Mail" app server connection, iMap!!!!  I believe Apple is strengthening their server farm.  Has been out for over a week; they were wise to have the iCloud also in the cloud.

Have you considered the possibility that the third party fan software might itself be implicated in the issue, theosib (or perhaps something else introduced at about that time?).
My inclination in a situation like this would be to back up your drive to an external, wipe the drive, and do a clean installation. At the very least I'd try an archive and install.
Do you have plenty of free space on the drive? Once you get things down below the last 10 to 20% things can get hairy at times, and may not be fixed as a result of simply freeing up some room, as free space fragmentation is likely to have set in.
As far as RAM goes, either "Rember" - http://www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/rember/ or, better still, but less user friendly, "memtest" - http://www.memtestosx.org/ does a much better job of checking your RAM than the AHT. Still takes a while to run for a thorough test, but much quicker than the approach you are planning on using.
You might also want to use "Activity Monitor" to check for any applications with progressive "memory leaks" or that are acting as CPU hogs, given your symptoms
    Cheers

  • Draft emails not deleting after sending via Mail.app

When I compose an email a copy of that get auto saved in the Draft folder and should delete itself once I press send but that is not the case.  After I press send I can see a copy in my Sent folder AND in the Draft folder.  It only seems to happen with some emails that have attachments even with very small file sizes.
Has anyone else had this problem and is there a fix?
Email is my business and I can't have unpredictable behaviour like this.  When I see the same message in my Draft and Sent folders its impossible to tell if it has actually been sent.  I have to follow up with a phone call to verify receipt.  Ridiculous!
    Here are my relevant specs:
    IMAP email service
    OSX 10.6.8
    Mail.app
If you have a fix, thanks in advance.

  • Why are the unread messages in my Inbox no longer in bold typeface?

When I opened my Inbox the unread messages were no longer in bold typeface. As far as I am aware I have not changed any settings. Is there a reason? I had some messages which I had not looked at. Can I get back the bold typeface for these messages or is it gone forever?

    TRy this :
reindex the Inbox folder, move all emails and then compact folder.
    These are the instructions:
    * right click on Inbox folder and select 'Properties'
    * click on 'Repair Folder' button
    * click on OK
    * Refresh the folder pane. Either select another folder and then reselect the Inbox or collapse all folder trees to refresh the folder Pane.
    * Then move all good emails into suitable folders.
    * Delete any emails you do not want.
    * When Inbox is empty; Right click on Inbox and select: Compact
Wait for a new mail to see if it is displayed in bold.

  • Mail.app 10.6.4 constantly polling Gmail (IMAP) but not fetching new mail

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.4, Mail.app has been having a problem with Gmail (IMAP).
When I launch Mail.app it connects to Gmail without any problem and fetches any new mail. The next time it checks for mail on Gmail, the animated activity symbol appears next to my Gmail inbox and then stays there spinning constantly. Any new mail is not retrieved, and it will continue like this until I quit and restart Mail.app, in which case the cycle repeats - first fetch is ok, subsequently can't fetch mail.
Have experienced this on both my Macs. Have tried disabling/re-enabling accounts, deleting & recreating, resetting passwords, but all to no avail. One glimmer of hope is that Gmail (IMAP) seems to work fine on my iPhone and iPad, so the problem seems to be in the version of Mail.app in Snow Leopard 10.6.4?

oddly i fixed by deleting the account and creating it again.

  • Unread messages in the INBOX

I migrated data from NMS4.15 to IMS5.2 ( coppied filesystems) and ran reconstruct -m.
All mailboxes are accessible but for some reason all the messages in the Inbox folders are marked as unread.
Does anyone know what is causing that and how it can be fixed.
    thank you,
    Svetlana Lyba.

When you "copied all filesystems", did you also copy the contents of the "mboxlist" directory? That's where the database that keeps that information lives. . . .

  • .mac mail and mail.app, IMAP, inbox not refreshing on web after delete

I am using mail.app with my .mac mail account. When i delete an email from the inbox it moves it to my trash in the mail.app program and takes it out of the inbox, which is normal. However, it does not do this when i open up my mail using the web. Here, the message is still in my inbox and it is also in the deleted messages folder.
So, i have searched everywhere for some answers on this but have found nothing. In trying to figure this out i realized that if i click on the trash within mail.app, the little clock refresh icon pops up, then if i click back onto the "inbox" icon it then gets the refresh clock icon. After this is done the .mac web page is correct, nothing in my inbox and it is still in my deleted.
The problem is I dont click on trash and the back to inbox everytime i use my mail.app program so when i leave the house and check my mail at work using the web everything i deleted the night before is still there.
Is this normal? is there an auto refresh? i have it set to check for new mail every 5 minutes but that doesnt seem to get the refresh thing to happen. I also have my .mac sync to sync mailboxes and settings.
any help with this is appreciated. I have searched google and many forums for the answer and have given up.
    Thank you

    You're welcome.
It does as the selection indicates. It automatically synchronizes changed mailboxes only after a change is made to a mailbox that is stored on the server. So when selecting a message for deletion in the account's Inbox mailbox and after the message is moved to the account's Trash mailbox which stored locally on the hard drive or on the server via Mail preferences, each changed server stored mailbox in Mail is automatically synchronized with the server at that time.

The message icon shows 1 unread message when there are acvtually none. How do I fix this?

Given that you are very low in memory on your iPhone, it would be much easier to connect your phone to your computer and download iOS 8.1 via iTunes.  Memory won't be an issue this way.

  • HT201320 How do I delete the unread message number when I have no unread messages in my inbox?

I have a number attached to my mail folder which is 978unread messages, but I can't find any unread messages. How do I get rid of this number. Also I have over 1000 flagged messages but I have none. How do I delete these numbers.

In Mail Preferences/Accounts/each GMail account, set up the SMTP Outgoing Server for each account separately, going into SMTP name/edit/Advanced and specify the Username of each account.  The Outgoing servers must be two different servers, authenticated by the Username and Password of each.
Otherwise, the GMail SMTP server will change the from address to that of the account where the SMTP server was setup.

  • 10.5 Mail: Hide unread message counts of folders? (or, how backup all mail)

Ok, this is a very confusing topic. I have connected Apple Care, and they understand what I'm trying to do, but say there is "no way" that it can be done. But I know there is a way so hopefully someone can help.
First, this is what I'm asking for...then I'll explain why. I am looking for a way to "hide" the unread mail counts of a SPECIFIC FOLDER. (not the in box, not all messages, ONLY messages in ONE folder.)
Here is why.... I finally got my mother using email with her Verizon DSL address in Mail.app. The problem is, she is one of those people that "deletes" just about every message she gets because she "doesn't need it anymore" But, there has been many times where she has deleted something that down the road might be needed - and therefore, it is lost. Sure, Time Machine is set up and could recover it, and there are other ways of getting things back, but is just too difficult, and those methods don't last forever.
So here is what I did to solve this and make it easy - I set up a RULE in mail.app that takes every message and COPIES it to a folder called "BACKUP." Now, she can delete things from her in box when she is done with them (which will make her happy) but down the road if the message is ever needed again, it is just a search or even a SPOTLIGHT search away! Or, you could just open the "backup" folder and see an index of ALL the messages. So I had this setup for a while and it was great....but there was one problem.... The folder "backup" would count un-read messages. So after a while, she would go to check her mail and see that she has 50 unread messages! (only 1 of which was really un-read in her in box, but the other 49 where old copies in the backup folder.) So I then edited the rule and found an action to mark the message as read. Time goes by and then I realize that NOTHING in being marked read. So even real unread messages in the in box would immediately be marked as read and would not come up as bolded or with the blue dot. So that became annoying as it was hard to see what was new and what wasn't. So then I came up with this idea of setting a rule that all of her Verizon email would be forwarded to another account (I set up a gmail account for her) so that all I messages would be forwarded there. Then, I setup gmail to forwarded them back thinking it would be easy to setup a rule that says any message coming from "gmail account" would be moved to folder and marked as read. I then get a panic phone call saying..."my inbox keeps getting hundreds of unread messages...there all the same thing! I then log in to see that one new message was being pushed back and forth between Mail.app and gmail in an endless loop! so I had to shut the forwarding to stop that!
So as you can see....this is very difficult, but yet the problem is so simple and should have an easy fix. All I want is a way to backup all incoming messages, and keep them stored in a folder that marks them as read.
Could anyone PLEASE help me out with this? _Apple says there is no way to do this because of the limitations in the Rules that mail.app provides_....but it does give me the option to run an Apple Script. _AppleCare said that it could easily be done via an Apple Script_, but I have NO CLUE on how to even start that! Even the easy tutorials I tried left me confused.
    So - ANY ideas????
Thank you SO much in advance for anyone that could help out!
    -Scott

Sorry I am marking this solved, but it never was.
The best thing that could be done is to rely on Time Machine, or forward all of your incoming email to another address.
Apparently, there is no way to do what I asked. But there should be. So Apple, please fix this.
Again, sorry I am marking it as solved.

  • Inbox not receiving email on mac mail

    Hello,
I have a problem with my Mail app on my mac (MBA 2013 running 10.9.1) with one of my two iCloud account, where by one of them  inbox is no longer receving any messages and only old messages were showing in the inbox. Account 'A' for is fine syncing mail correctly inbox/sent/junk and all but account 'B' for some reason was not syncing inbox or anyother folder. What I have done is remove the mail account 'B' only through System Preference>iCloud restarted my computer then restarted the computer and checked the mail.
Now all old messages are no longer showing in account 'B' but 'A' is working perfectly fine. On the troubled account junk and send mail are syncing but inbox is not. I have done a repair permission and recevied the following message: "Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired." Although when searching it seems that I can safely ignor this message according to apple but I only bring it up in case there is a connection.
One thing to note I am receiving email on my iPhone with the troubled account it's just that I am not receving any emails on my mac mail.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

Well after a few hours it started working again ... I have no explanation for this I just kept my inbox highligted.
At least this maybe a reference or people that go through the same problem to just give it time

  • Hotmail account not working on Yosemite's Mail app

I've tried everything I've found on the internet so far trying to get my hotmail account to work the way it was before my update to Yosemite, with no success. A few days ago it stopped syncing messages properly, and now it just shows them as downloading but it never finishes the syncing.
I even left it working overnight with the mail app open, nothing else, prevented from going to sleep mode or shutting down, and it kind of worked, downloading some of the messages that were pending, but others just won't do it no matter what. I've tried Deleting the Account, restarting and Adding it again, also tried changing the imap server information to different options I've found, no difference.
I also tried Outlook for Mac with all my accounts, and the hotmail account seemed to work better which means the problem is between Mac Mail and the Hotmail account itself. The problem is I don't want to use Outlook for Mac because showed other problems with my Gmail accounts, which renders it unsuitable to handle all my mail accounts. Apple Mail was flawless until my update to Yosemite, not cool.
Does anybody have the same issue?
    Thanks!

Same here.  I, too, have tried everything, including removing and re-adding the Hotmail account and SMTP servers, rebooting, you name it.  Some folders seem to sync sometimes, but some do not ever.  The main inbox does not sync at all.  In addition, the problem seems to be strictly with Apple Mail on my iMac and MacBook Pro.  The issue does not occur on my iPhone 6 or iPad Mini.  I was very pleased with Apple Mail until now.
