Unread messages no longer bold...

I've just noticed that even though I have the Preference option ticked, my unread emails are no longer shown bold.
Is there a way to recover this option? Can the Mail program be rebuilt? Currently I don't have any backup, unfortunately.

'Try setting it in Terminal.'
Tried that but unhappily still no bold :o(
I took screen shots of all the settings in my two mail accounts, and saved and then deleted my .plist file, opened Mail and configured my accounts, checking with the screen shots. When I finish the first account and press 'create' I get this message...
Mail found an existing mailbox named Outbox; this mailbox is reserved for Mail.
Your mailbox has been renamed to “Delivered”.
There is no Outbox mailbox showing normally in my Mail.
Then Mail opens with all my notes in the Inbox (which is not how my original preference is set), no emails in the Inbox, and a new Mailbox created called 'Delivered'. No emails in the Sent folder either. No emails anywhere. Only all my Notes!
It seems like something is badly wrong with my Mail.
So I restore the original .plist and get my emails back.
I think I will have to give up and settle for no bold on unread emails!

  • Apple Mail: unread messages appear in bold even if unread. How to fix?

In iOS 10.9 and Mail 7.0/Classic View my inbox messages change from bold to normal before I've actually read them.
For example, I delete an incoming unwanted (bold) spam message, then the marker jumps down to the next message and this changes from bold to normal. Bad, since I wish to keep it in bold and read it later.
I've tried to click off/on the bold function in preferences, quit Mail etc. Nothing happens.
I had this problem earlier with 10.5.8 and an earlier Mail version. I remember downloading something to get an extra button in the Mail/Preferences toolbar. Just can't remember what it was...
    Any help out there?

I think you mentioned some widget you downloaded that introduced a NEW button ?? That's what makes it normal for you, I fear.
    Try this workaround:
select the first message in your Inbox list
Employ whatever means to mark it UNread with your preferred method,
THEN ⇧ Shift + Down arrow key to just above the Subject title you wish to read
THEN, Down arrow key or click the next in the list ("Locator for authorized repair/ ..." in my example)
    VOILA!!
    Repeat as necessary

  • Unread mail no longer bold - mail 4.05 in Snow leopard

I've seen countless  posts about this happening in Lion but not in 10.6.
Yesterday, for no obvious reason, all unread emails only had the blue blob next to them but text was not in bold. Tried checking and unchecking 'display unread messages in bold font' button. Quit and reopened a few times, shut down and restarted machine but nothing changed.
Blue blob just isn't defined enough when you get a couple of hundred emails a day - too easy to miss messages appearing in multiple mailboxes. Has anyone else had this problem?

Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.

  • Why are the unread messages in my Inbox no longer in bold typeface?

When I opened my Inbox the unread messages were no longer in bold typeface. As far as I am aware I have not changed any settings. Is there a reason? I had some messages which I had not looked at. Can I get back the bold typeface for these messages or is it gone forever?

    TRy this :
reindex the Inbox folder, move all emails and then compact folder.
    These are the instructions:
    * right click on Inbox folder and select 'Properties'
    * click on 'Repair Folder' button
    * click on OK
    * Refresh the folder pane. Either select another folder and then reselect the Inbox or collapse all folder trees to refresh the folder Pane.
    * Then move all good emails into suitable folders.
    * Delete any emails you do not want.
    * When Inbox is empty; Right click on Inbox and select: Compact
Wait for a new mail to see if it is displayed in bold.

  • Mail icon no longer displays unread message count

The mail icon in my dock no longer displays the number of unread messages. Is there a fix for this?

You’ve probably either disabled or removed a font that Mail needs to work properly (e.g. Helvetica):

  • Thunderbird is telling me that there is an unread message and it is one I read several days ago, listed in bold type again.

Every day or so Thunderbird says there is an unread message. I look for it and find it on the list of my messages received. It is in bold type as if it is unread. However I had read the message days ago.
I had this problem a couple weeks ago and decided to delete all the messages in my inbox. That solved the problem for a couple weeks, now it is back. I thought at first it was because my inbox was getting overloaded but now there are only a couple hundred messages in it. Maybe I should just uninstall Thunderbird and then install it again.

remove all mails from the inbox (Copy them to another folder or delete them. It makes litle difference.
Now Select File menu (alt+F) > compact folders.
I am guessing there is some corruption hiding away in there. A compact should fix it, but will do it better on an empty folder.

  • Inbox shows 1 unread message after opening all the messages.why are new inbox messages not highlighted

I cannot find the unread message despite having opened all my inbox messages and wonder why the new messages are no longer in bold text.

    If not try
View menu > folders > unread see if Thunderbird can find it since it says it is there after an index rebuild.

  • Inbox and Drafts show unread message count of all folders within. Can I get the local folders to do this too?

I'm filtering mail into folders in the local folder tree. There may be two or three levels, e.g., Local Folders -> Lists -> OS -> MacOSX. Mail that is unread in the MacOSX folder is counted and displayed when the MacOSX folder is visible. However, keeping the entire tree on display is a nuisance and it is long, so I don't see things ate the bottom. I have to scroll to reveal the rest of the items in the folder tree. For these reasons I'd prefer to have the folder tree in its minimal state.
Is it possible to have the the top level folders display an unread message count for all the enclosed folders?

when I collapse the folder tree of local folders, it shows the unread count for sub folders.

  • 10.5 Mail: Hide unread message counts of folders? (or, how backup all mail)

Ok, this is a very confusing topic. I have connected Apple Care, and they understand what I'm trying to do, but say there is "no way" that it can be done. But I know there is a way so hopefully someone can help.
First, this is what I'm asking for...then I'll explain why. I am looking for a way to "hide" the unread mail counts of a SPECIFIC FOLDER. (not the in box, not all messages, ONLY messages in ONE folder.)
Here is why.... I finally got my mother using email with her Verizon DSL address in Mail.app. The problem is, she is one of those people that "deletes" just about every message she gets because she "doesn't need it anymore" But, there has been many times where she has deleted something that down the road might be needed - and therefore, it is lost. Sure, Time Machine is set up and could recover it, and there are other ways of getting things back, but is just too difficult, and those methods don't last forever.
So here is what I did to solve this and make it easy - I set up a RULE in mail.app that takes every message and COPIES it to a folder called "BACKUP." Now, she can delete things from her in box when she is done with them (which will make her happy) but down the road if the message is ever needed again, it is just a search or even a SPOTLIGHT search away! Or, you could just open the "backup" folder and see an index of ALL the messages. So I had this setup for a while and it was great....but there was one problem.... The folder "backup" would count un-read messages. So after a while, she would go to check her mail and see that she has 50 unread messages! (only 1 of which was really un-read in her in box, but the other 49 where old copies in the backup folder.) So I then edited the rule and found an action to mark the message as read. Time goes by and then I realize that NOTHING in being marked read. So even real unread messages in the in box would immediately be marked as read and would not come up as bolded or with the blue dot. So that became annoying as it was hard to see what was new and what wasn't. So then I came up with this idea of setting a rule that all of her Verizon email would be forwarded to another account (I set up a gmail account for her) so that all I messages would be forwarded there. Then, I setup gmail to forwarded them back thinking it would be easy to setup a rule that says any message coming from "gmail account" would be moved to folder and marked as read. I then get a panic phone call saying..."my inbox keeps getting hundreds of unread messages...there all the same thing! I then log in to see that one new message was being pushed back and forth between Mail.app and gmail in an endless loop! so I had to shut the forwarding to stop that!
So as you can see....this is very difficult, but yet the problem is so simple and should have an easy fix. All I want is a way to backup all incoming messages, and keep them stored in a folder that marks them as read.
Could anyone PLEASE help me out with this? _Apple says there is no way to do this because of the limitations in the Rules that mail.app provides_....but it does give me the option to run an Apple Script. _AppleCare said that it could easily be done via an Apple Script_, but I have NO CLUE on how to even start that! Even the easy tutorials I tried left me confused.
    So - ANY ideas????
Thank you SO much in advance for anyone that could help out!
    -Scott

Sorry I am marking this solved, but it never was.
The best thing that could be done is to rely on Time Machine, or forward all of your incoming email to another address.
Apparently, there is no way to do what I asked. But there should be. So Apple, please fix this.
Again, sorry I am marking it as solved.

  • Change unread message color in Mail

I'm trying to mimic a particularly useful feature in Entourage, the show messages using these colors for read and unread messages. In Entourage you can simply set a preference to show unread messages as one color and read messages as another. Mail doesn't have this capability at all. You can set either the text color or the background color, but you cannot change this color depending on the status of the message (read or unread). The only thing I can do is either set the text or background color of all messages using rules, or set the text on unread messages to bold using preferences.
I found an Applescript that sort of does what I want:
    tell application "Mail"
set background color of (messages of inbox whose read status is false) to red--unread
set background color of (messages of inbox whose read status is true) to none--default read
    end tell
However, this script will not work if you change "background color" to "text color". It also changes the text color of the read messages in the preview pane to black when it runs the second part and I can't figure out a way to make the text a different color. I have a rule set up to set the color of text to a specific account, but the script overrides the rule.
Any suggestions on how this can be done?

I'm sorry you find my responses to be rude. I simply stated that you are not answering my question. I also said that I appreciate your attempts.
I'm not trying to argue with you, but you come across as if you didn't even take the time to read my original post. Your replies all mention things I already covered in that post, such as the Mail option to display unread messages in bold, or using an Applescript or even trying another program.
I was hoping that someone might be able to either tweak the Applescript I submitted or provide another option I hadn't considered, rather than simply suggest trying things I already said I've tried.
Sorry that this offends you. That was never my intention.

  • How do I clear unread message in Apple Mail?

Using Apple Mail 6.6 on a MacBook Pro running OX X 10.8.5.  Our Exchange server is 2007/2010. Besides my Exchange mail, I have 2 Gmail accounts and one iCloud account in Apple Mail.  I have no issues with the Gmail or iCloud accounts.
Currently, I have 34 "unread" message from my Exchange account in Apple Mail.  On my iPhone, iPad and Outlook (PC), I have 0 unread messages.  When I filter Apple Mail for unread messages, there are none.  It's as if these are phantom unread messages.  I did a rebuild of the Exchange account in Apple Mail and I deleted and re-installed the Exhange Account in Apple Mail.  And still I am left with these mysterious 34 unread messages.
It is really annoying.  Any thoughts?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
    Envelope Index
    ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Warning: The process may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. For reasonable-sized mailboxes, it should only take a few minutes.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

I have, indeed, checked with my ISP and they do accept imap accounts. So I followed religiously their instructions, published in their setting e mail information for Mountain Lion website. The instructions were quite simple, and choosing imap was as easy as setting POP mail. however, the net result was that I could never connect with the servers to do anything with the mail. I know they are set up correctly, but when it tried to send mail, after a while an error message came up saying that it couldn't connect and gave me the option of dealing with a "connection doctor" or some such system. This I clicked on and noted that there were an awful lot of servers that it was trying to connect to some of which had been removed when I removed the setup addresses. The ones I wanted were, in fact, showing as connected!! It was obviously checking on anything that had been used in setting a server name from way back when and suffering with a severe bout of indigestion!
I think what really needs to happen is to get iMAC/Mountain Lion to regurgitate all that rubbish which is no longer a requirement, since I am only using three addresses, one from icloud and two from my ISP. I do not need the clogging up from redundant server names, but it seems that the MAC hangs on to everything just in case I may want to go back to them rather than set them from afresh!! I am not feeling too confident in trying to set the address that originally showed the problem, my BT one, and since this morning, it is almost working 100%, I'll leave well alone and see if it settles down. (One step forward and nineteen backwards!!)
    Cheers
