Unread phantom emails

I would love some input from anyone who has figured out how to get rid of the phantom unread emails in Apple Mail for Mac. They ONLY show up on my work PC; not at home, or on my phone. Didn't start getting them until I downloaded to Mavericks, but I don't know if that's the issue or not.
I have been through every e-mail in every folder; I definitely do not have any unread e-mails.

This worked perfectly!!!
Thank you for the response and the accurate assistance!
"I had the same problem. What i did was:
Shut down Mail
In Finder, go to "~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/" (just do CMD+Shift+G and paste the path)
Move all "Enevelope" files to another place (like desktop)
Restart Mail and let it convert/reindex your mailboxes
Your Mail should be OK now and teh phantom messages should also appear
If this did work out, you can trash the Envelope Files you moved earlier.
I did try to simply re-build my Mailboxes, but it dident work out. The approach above did the trick.
Hope it helps

  • I can't delete phantom emails

    iPhone 6  IOS 8.1.3
I have recently deleted all the emails from a particular person on my mac email account.  When I search that person's name in the search all email accounts in the the search bar in the email app, I can no longer see any emails from that person. The problem however is, when I search that person's name from the search bar on top of my iPhone6 home screen, I get a list of phantom draft messages that I cannot seem to delete or get rid of. I have tried saving them as new draft messages. Once they appear in my draft mailbox, I delete and trash them. Then I search again from the home screen search and the phantom emails are still there as a draft that appears no where else except in the main search from the home screen.  I need help to get rid of these phantom messages.

Spotlight is known to have strange behaviour (since the introduction of spotlight on iOS 3.0): It keeps in it's spotlight files deleted files, and these "phantom" residues will only delete when you reset the device, and it will even transfer if you set the iPhone from backups.
Some users have even reported on this forum that this caused them some troubles (i.e: divorce, because the wife discovered spotlight saves of message her husband was sending to whoever...). You might want to feedback this to Apple: https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Therefore, you emails are really deleted, but they leave a trail behind...

  • IPhone Issues - Phantom Emails

I am experiencing phantom email in my exchange account. This has been happening once per day. I have turned off email, and turned it back on. this solves the issue but the problem keeps recurring daily. Please help. I am almost ready to go to a Galaxy.

    Contact the Exchange administrator.
    Delete and re-add the account.
Switching devices is unlikely to resolve the issue as it's not really an iPhone issue.

  • I have 4 phantom emails on my Imac running OS 10.8.  How do I remove the unread emails that don't exist?

Can anyone help on the phantom emails

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • How do i delete phantom emails from inbox?

My inbox details that there are 3 unread or new messages ... but there is not, i've tried to search for unread messages to delete but no luck. I've gone on my laptop to delete the messages and there are 0 unread messages in my inbox....What to do?

I posted this in another thread - a fix for this happening with Gmail:
I tried all the fixes here for an identical issue with my gmail account, but kept being left with 26,000+ allegedly unread emails on the iphone 5 after upgrading....
Now, it seems to be OK after the following routine, done on my PC (NB not sure how applicable this is to other email accounts)
    1. (very important) - click on All Mail from the gmail menu on the left hand side of the screen (if you can't see this, it'll be revealed be selecting 'More' from the menu list).  (It would appear that the emails that the iphone is referring to are not, in fact, just the ones in the inbox..... )
    2. Click the 'down' arrow on the right hand end of the gmail search box (it's just by the blue button with the magnifying glass)
    3. In the 'Doesn't Have' field in the Search menu, enter some gobbledygook - like "asgjihg567vfd" - something that you are certain will not be in any email.  That means that all of the mail, including long-term deleted mail (not just the stuff that appears to figure in your bin), will get selected
    4.  In the left hand of the three grey boxes above the emails (the one with the square on it), select 'All'
    5. You will see on the bar above the emails that a message comes up saying - "All 20 conversations on this page are selected. Select all conversations that match this search".  Click on this to select, literally, all your emails - past, present, binned, spam, etc.
    6. From the right hand control box above the emails (the one saying 'More'), select 'Mark as read'.   This will take a few moments, but will work through them all.
    7.  When you go into the gmail account on your phone, you should see the unread email count miraculously disappear when it syncs.
This has worked for me and I hope it stays this way!   The trick is that you may have lots of unread emails that you binned ages ago - but these have been resurrected through the miracle that is iOS7.
FWIW, I very much regret upgrading to iOS7 and have written to Tim Cook telling him that it's going to lose him customers - not that I expect that he will see my mail, or answer, or that he cares.......

  • Phantom emails in 10.6.8

I'm showing an email exists were it doesn't. I want to get rid of the indicator. What can I do?

    Hi,
Make a new Smart Mailbox that only includes Unread Mails, do they show in that Smartbox?

  • TS4002 unread exchange email messages  that do not appear on device

Inbox shows unread messages, but the messages are not displayed in the inbox.

If it's an exchange account, that has nothing to do with iCloud or your iCloud email account.  You may need to delete, then re-create the exchange account on your device.  You may also want to try to force closing the mail app (from the home screen, double-tap the home button, locate Mail in the list at the bottom, tap and hold it until it wiggles, tap to close it, tap the home button again).

  • "Phantom" email accounts - how to delete?

I have OS X Yosemite and use the built in mail app. I am am having trouble sending email via my Yahoo! mail account.
I regularly get a popup message asking for my password.
After several attempts I brought up the Mail Connection Doctor and noticed two extra "Yahoo! SMTP" servers that Mail couldn't connection to.
I then removed my Yahoo mail account via System Preferences->Internet Accounts and went back to the Mail Connection Doctor and noticed that Mail was still trying to use these "Phantom" accounts.
How can I get rid of them as it is clearly the problem I'm having tring to send mail.
    Thanks!
    David

    Solved my problem.
For anyone interested here's what I did to remove the extra SMTP accounts.
    1. In the OS X Mail app go to Preferences->Accounts.
    2. Pick any account, e.g., iCloud.
    3. Then in Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) select Edit SMTP Server List.
    4. Now remove any extra SMTP servers that you don't want.

  • Only Download New Unread Pop3 Email?

One of my email accounts is a yahoo hosted pop3 account. In the past I have left all my email on the server (7k + messages). When I access this account on my iphone it is downloading old email that has already been read in my email client on my computer.
    1) Is there a way to force the iphone to only download new unread emails in this pop3 account (similar to turning recent off in gmail)?
    2) Is there a way to tell the iphone that the 7000 messages have already been viewed and I don't need to download them and to only download email from today forward?
Ideally, what I would like it for my computer email client to continue to receive my hosted pop3 email regardless of whether or not it has been read as it does today. But, I would like my iphone to only download new messages that haven't been downloaded by another pop3 client.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Phantom emails in Mail

Started using Mail but didn't really care for it. Switched to Netscape, and after a few weeks decided it was too slow and too crash-y. Got somewhat used to Mail and then decided to import emails from Netscape. Don't recall exactly the folders I had before the import, but after importing folders and emails, I now have a folder that supposedly contains emails, but they don't show up, can't be read, and therefore can't be deleted in Mail.
Used Terminal to snoop around, and there's nothing in the folder even though Mail indicates there are 5 emails. Dang! Tried to Rebuilt the folder in Mail, but its unselectable for that purpose.
What to do; what to do?
    Clues, hints and solutions appreciated!
    MR
ps- I have screen shots if that would help my explanation of the situation. [Just tell me how to post them (I tried) and I will.]
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Set up Mail again from scratch as follows:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
    4. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
    5. You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
If Mail works fine now, import your Nestscape mail again, but using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion instead, adapting the instructions for Mozilla/Thunderbird to your particular situation (the mailbox format used by Netscape and Mozilla/Thunderbird is the same).
If you want to import mail stored in the old Mail folder currently on the Desktop, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you wish and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.
