Unreadable disk...

hallo, i just bought an avid and am trying to install version 5.7.2 on my macpro 2,6 running os 10.4.10.
i insert the disk and it doesnt seem to spin like other disks that i insert. and toast is then opened, as if the disk were empty. the avid dvd is straight out of the package and reads correctly on my coworkers mac laptop. i have gone to the disk utility and the disk appears but i cannot mount it...i restarted my mac with the Avid dvd inside the drive and when the machine restarted a popup window appeared saying the disk is not readible on this mac...does anyone know why this is happening...the disk is sparkling new, with only a very minor scratch, but really 1 day old out of the box...
i would apprecaite any help...
thanks a lot...

Are we talking a CD, a Zip, or a good old fashioned floppy disk here, all three of which a 1998 vintage G3 (according to his system config.) might likely have?
If the drive won't read any disks then it's the drive (or something related, like the controller into which the drive is plugged) that's bad. Then you're stuck with using another drive to read the disk. It's most likely to be the drive since I've had a number of drives go bad on my 3 G3s but never a controller. If it's a CD drive you can try a cleaner, though with all the CD drives I've had go bad on me a cleaner has never helped. If it's a floppy drive then you can also try cleaning it. Maybe take the drive out of hte computer and blow compressed air into it to try and drive out some of the dust. The cooling fan in the computer drives a lot of air through the machine, some of which comes in through the floppy drive door and collects in there.

  • IPod became an unreadable disk

I've been facing a puzzling problem with my 15GB iPod recently. i'm using Mac OS 10.2.8
When i hook up the iPod to the firewire, i get this message: “A disk attempting to mount as Unknown has failed verification or has failed to mount. Please use Disk Utility to check the disk and correct any error.”
Then I’m asked to click on either “launch disk utility” or “ok”.
I launch disk utility and there’s no ipod icon.
I also get this message: “You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To use the unreadable volumes, click Initialize. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore.”
Then I have 3 choices to click on: Ignore, Initialize, Eject.
What should I do, so that my iPod can work with the mac again?
The iPod works well on its own. i can record voice memos and listen to music. But it just doesn't seem to work on my mac.
my iPod is a gift and i'm trying not to buy a new one.
    Help please! Thanks so much.

here's just an update - i decided to restore my ipod to the factory settings. everything's back to normal, thank God.

  • Unreadable disk on cd-r's

When I try to insert a burned disk with data on it, I get the message "this computer cannot read the disk" The options it gives me are "ignore" or "eject." I've tried changing the "hostconfig" file in the "etc" folder, as suggested by the support website, but that suggestion was for an older version of OSX. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106345
After I did that the disk just spun inside the drive, nothing happened at all.
After calling the support line and reinstalling OSX, it still doesn't work. Any ideas?
Note, the drive reads audio cds and dvds fine, and the cd-r's work on my ibook fine, too.

A disk will show up in disk utility, but not in finder. In disk utility, there is no option to initialize the disk, and none of the 4 buttons under "first aid" (repair and verify disk and disk permissions) are clickable.
I got off the phone with apple again, they suggested I reset the "p-rom" using the comand-option-p-r method, which did not solve the problem. She ended by saying it was a compatability issue, which is odd to me since the cds come up fine on an ibook also running 10.4.5.
I just tried burning and reading a test cd, which worked fine, and the computer is also able to read cd-rws, at least the one i tried.
If anybody knows what the hostconfig file SHOULD be for macbooks (in the etc folder), I'd be happy, since the only thing that has changed my situation so far has been doing just that, but using an old hostconfig file for OS 10.1. It did not solve the problem, but the error message did not show up.
    Thanks anyone!

  • Can someone please help me re-install Photoshop Elements 8? I appear to have an unreadable disk.

I recently had to replace the hard drive on my Mac. Ever since that change, I haven't been able to pull up my Photoshop Elements 8. It gave me a warning saying something about the serial number being invalid. I contacted Adobe once before but their queue was too high and they were too busy and asked me to come back another time. Between now and then I uninstalled photoshop elements from my computer in hopes to re-install it and fix the problem. The problem now is that my installation disk isn't even recognized by my computer. Is this because it is only allowed to be installed on one computer or could there be something wrong with my disk? I need this program for my at home business and would appreciate any assistance you can offer.

    Hi ,
Please find the direct link to download Photoshop Elements 8: http://prodesigntools.com/direct-download-links-for-lightroom-3-and-photoshop-elements-8.h tml . Please follow the very important instruction before download.

  • Problems with CS5 Web Premium Disks Being Unreadable

I pre-ordered my CS5 Web Premium update and finally received the three disk set on May 6.  Attempted to install and the first disk which was the Suite installed fine.  The other two disks were unreadable.  I called Adobe support and they shipped another set to me which arrived today, May 12, and the same thing happened with the same two disks - Adobe Acrobat and CS5 Content.  The disks are unreadable on five of my Macs and three windows machines.
Called tech support and was bounced around from Customer Service to support in India and back to Customer Service and finally told them I just wanted a refund after about ninety minutes on the call.  I do find it funny that I was passed to Tech Support to "troubleshoot" unreadable disks.
A simple solution which nobody at Adobe seemed to grasp is to allow you to download a copy even if you paid for a shipped copy. I am amazed that this is not an option.  So now I will eat the shipping costs and send my box back to Adobe and wait for what will probably be months before they credit my card back for the purchase.
Anybody else having problems with the install disks?

CS5 loads fine but Acrobat is unreadable and the Content disk is unreadable.  The CS5 trial download doesn't include the content or Acrobat.  Acrobat is a windows only download.   So the trial download only installs what comes on disk 1 which is the only good disk of the three in the shipment.
A guy I talked to in Tech Support acknowledged that they produced a bad batch of disks and it seems I got two shipments of bad disks.

  • Disk Setup on VMware

I have VMWare452. I have created a 12Gb virtual Disk. I load Redhat linux. According to the Oracle/Linux/VMware cookbook I should a disk table with the following. /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sbc to /dev/sde. These it says need to be partition with /, swap, opt/oracle, raw and CRS. But when I manually configure and answer yes to delete unreadable disk table. I only get /dev/sda. Is this normal. How am I able to have multiple virtual /dev/sdx partitions when VMWare presents the space allocated for the virtual disk as /dev/sda of 12Gb in size? Confused.
Do I continue to just create separate partons? Not sure how you can create a Raw partition with my single /dev/sda device.

stage 1 of the cookbooks, provides a skeleton VM. if you use that to load linux then u will have multiple disks, otherwise you can add them later from the VM interface when the VM is powered off, play with add-hardware.

  • New HDD The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

I've put my brand new 2.5" hybrid hard drive in an enclosure and get the following message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and have been given the following 3 options: Initialize... / Ignore  / Eject.
What does Initialize do and is the right option for me if I want to format and partition my hard drive?
    All help appreciated.

Choose "Initialize". Use Disk Utility to partition it. Choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Initialization formats a blank or otherwise unreadable disk for use with OS X.

  • Update, Restore, Reformat - it all either hangs, "fails", or is unreadable.

My husband reformatted the iPod to PC (he didn't read the prompt or realize that reformatting the device would erase it - Grr...). He had always used it on a flat panel iMac running 10.2.8. We also have a laptop now with Tiger, which has never run the iPod.
I thought all I'd need to do to fix his iPod is to reformat it back to Mac, then reload the songs from iTunes. I started out using the laptop. I reset, ran disk utility (sometimes it couldn't repair the volume - it said "error -39" once, several times it said "failed upon exit", and sometimes it could), restored (sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't), tried to update (it wouldn't), used firewire port and tried USB port, recharging, sometimes it was recognizable, sometimes it was an "unreadable disk", and the closest I came to success was about 1600 of 1800 songs, at which point it hung overnight (two days in a row) and I quit.
My next thought was that it may not be compatible with Tiger, so I spent all day today trying it with the flat panel on 10.2.8. I went through all of the motions, but the iPod never would appear in iTunes. Updater and restore never worked on the flat panel. Restore would hang without finishing, so I reset over and over again. I tried firewire and also USB on this machine, too.
I must be i-missing something simple here. I'm beginning to feel like an i-moron! : )
I've been poring through the discussion boards and manuals for three days now, and the articles have taught me how to reset and restore, but the end result is that I still have an empty iPod.
I really don't have a preference as to which of the Macs we dedicate to music, but the Macs have an external HD with lots of free space, so I don't want to use it on PC mode.
    Any advice?
    Thank you so much!

    Hello,
    Please read this first
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”
Ok, now please connect with your Pc first
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    If fails then
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”

  • Multiple sudden booting and other problems:  Help!

I have experienced a sudden problem that makes me afraid to shut down my iMac until I sort it out. I have had it for five wonderful, flawless years.
When I tried to boot today, four times it would not. I got to the grey Apple screen and a processing "clock," but it would not go beyond that in any reasonable time. I finally left it running trying to boot. It did eventually, but glacially slow. Then, there was a message that: "!You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click ignore." However, I had NO "disk inserted."
    More wierdness followed.
I tried to insert a memory stick to backup my hard drive, and got the same "disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read" message. This is the same stick onto which I have previously backed up with no problem.
I then tried to run my McAfee virus scan, but wanetd to update it first. It does not appear to update, even though it says that it is doing so. The starting message continues to say that I last updated months ago. The Virus scan did, however, apparently run using whatever version it actually had in it, and reported only 2 noncritical errors.
I then tried to run Disk Utility, and it won't launch. I "bounces" up an down in the Dock, but then just closes.
I then opened iMail, and all the previous messages showed as unread, even though they actually all were read.
So, I almost could not boot, get a weird "unreadable disk" message, can't get the drive to recognize a memory stick in order to back up to it, can't update my Virus protection, can't run Disk Utility and am getting weird iMail .
Other things seem to be working okay, although sometimes very slowly.
What's going on, and what do I do?
Separate question: I want to insert a disk into my CD tray to use as a startup disk if I encounter another booting problem. Which CD do I use? Mac OSX Install Disk 1? Mac OSX Install Disk 2? (I think all the Software Restore disks include applications other than the OSX.
Final question: how do I get the CD tray to open on the front my iMac (the "tongue" type tray out of the round base) if I have another booting problem, so that I can insert a disk to use for startup?
    HELP! (thanks)

    Ali,
Sorry for being slow to respond. I have been trying to get things fixed with Repair Disk.
To answer your question first, my hard drive is 74.52 GB, with 55.59GB available, so I don't think that's the problem.
Quite a few things (but not everything) work once the hard drive boots, which is VERY VERY slow. However, any other media I try to use to backup (Memory sticks, CDs) can't be recognized. I get the "disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read" messae. The CD's also produced a message when I tried to name them of an "unexpected error."
I followed your repair instructions, but it did not solve the problem. The Repair Disk effort produced an error message under "Checking catalog file" of "Keys out of order." I ran Repair Disk multiple times (at least 10x), but the same message kept coming up. I also tried running Repair Permissions, which took about four hours to run. Repair Disk produced the same error message.
I also found an older Discussion string of messages about application Chess (installed with the basic Mac install disks) being corrupted. I trashed it. No difference.
That message string also talked about some people having problems after installing iTunes 6.0.2, but I am running 7.0.2, and it has been on the computer about two weeks beforre any of this started.
I will try Sherry Johnson's suggestions next.
    thanks for your help.

  • Not working - at all

    Can't transfer music
    Hi all,
just got an ipod classic 80 gig which I'm using with windows xp.
Tried to manually and automatically transfer music, got lots of errors (-69, -38 etc) and called apple help. Advised me to try the manual transfer. Doesn't work.
In the "music" tab of my ipod tracks show up (though not all I've tried to transfer), mostly greyed out - and the total file usage is so low I can tell they're not there anyway. I know they are greyed out when in auto sync, this is in manual.
Some tracks show up so I thought all is not lost. First, I was getting an error with the number 1418; googled it, and followed the advice to re-install my usb drivers. I also tried the registry tweak, and gave the drive a new letter to prevent network clash. Some of the tunes that are greyed out (under the music tab of my ipod section) have an exclamation mark, others like a little circular refresh icon.
Forced to re sync constantly, and music disappears, tried two third party softwares, same result. Get many messages about corrupt drive and unreadable disk.
Final strange thing - if I do manage to get say 500 mb of songs on it, when I reconnect it, the song count is 0, and the music mb is 0, but I'll have about 450mb of "other data".
What is going on - shouldn't this be easy?
If anyone can help I'd be very grateful,
    thanks,
    gubar

One other thing...my ipod won't turn off either, right now i have the apple screen just flashing off and on, i've tried everything in troubleshooting but nothing seems to work
    help please

  • Upgrade from 10.5.8 to 10.5.0 crashes

Upon receiving my highly anticipated upgrade DVD, I attempted to upgrade my mbp 3,1 15".
All went well at first, the progress bar moved steadily and it shut down and rebooted once. Not long after this, with the progress bar about 34% complete, I got the following message (slightly paraphrased):
Snow Leopard can not be installed on this computer. Please contact the manufacturer.
I've done some googling and people with dirty or unreadable disks get a kinder "please clean the DVD and try again" error message, haven't found anyone posting who's gotten the somewhat harsher error message above.
I then got the snow leopard boot options screen, tried installing from DVD, and it told me it was unable write to the laptop's HD. I know there are some filesystem changes in snow leopard so figured perhaps the safest thing to do was to restore to 10.5.8 using my time machine backup (which was only a couple hours old).
Any insight on the cause of this error would be helpful. Could be a bad (but readable) DVD, bad blocks on the HD perhaps?, something wrong with my mbp (though it's 100% solid, never crashes, etc), or just bad luck - an alpha particle at an inconvenient time or whatever.

    Two things:
    How is the disk formatted?
Do you have enough free disk space?
Launch Disk Utility and select the Disk - not the "Macintosh HD"
Look at the bottom for "Partition Map Scheme"
If it's APM, you need to reformat the drive in GUID.
You'll obviously need to backup all your data first.

  • IMac won't recognize external CD/DVD burner

I have an iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, OS 10.4.11. Five months ago, I purchased an external CD/DVD burner (Pioneer DVR-218L) in a multiple interface case from OtherWorldComputing. Everything worked flawlessly... I could burn iTunes CDs on that drive, using Toast I could copy DVDs from my internal drive to the external... life was good.
No longer. The computer simply doesn't recognize that there is an external burner attached.
I'm running it through with Firewire 400 cables, but I also tried Firewire 800 and USB2, with no luck. I've tried resetting the PRAM, and for one brief moment, thought I had licked the problem. I had a blank disk in the external drive and got a message saying that there was an unreadable disk, so I ejected it. Hooray! I put in a CD, which was recognized, momentarily. But when I went to copy those files to the computer, it was no longer recognized. And now I'm back where I was.
Very frustrating, because it had worked so smoothly and now it's not. I've spent much of today reading various message boards seeking an answer. Any suggestions?
    David

Something sporadic like that sounds more like a problem with the drive than with the computer or interface. You've tried several interfaces (FW, USB) which means it isn't just a bad port on the computer. If it was a bad bit of software I wouldn't expect the drive to briefly reappear like that.
When the drive is plugged in, what does Apple System Profiler say about Firewire or USB devices? It could be the enclosure is working but the drive itself is bad.
Have you phoned OWC about this? They have pretty good technical support and one reason for going with them is their reputation for standing behind their goods.

When exporting to a DVD from Final Cut Pro X, what settings are there to make sure you making the highest quality DVD possible?

There have been a lot of recent reports of difficulties sharing to DVD, but haven't been hearing about unreadable disks. Posibly there was an encoding error. Or it could have been bad media (blank disk).
Does it play in your Mac?
What brand of disks are you using?

  • Vmware vsphere health check report v5.1.0

    Hi,
I'm currently using the vmware vsphere health check report v5.1.0 script. I switched from another perl script to this and the report provide much more information. There is one thing that don't seem to work properly though..
I currently have a failed disk in my server and the report is showing "unknown" status next to 3 disk / disk day. If I run the other script I have used in the past, I have 3 alerts in red clearly showing that something has failed. Would any of you know why it's showing as unknown instead of critical in the report?

Thank you for the follow up. I do understand that a completly unreadable disk might throw an unknown status but the status is different from one report than the other. On one side, it clearly shows in red that the disk has something and on the side, it just throws a "I don't know what's going on with the disk". I ran both report the same day and i'm expecting some red in the report to warn me if a disk fail.
Is there a way to change that behavior from the health check script?
