Unreadable DVD RW disk being ejected - can't erase/format it

Hi,
I was burning some files onto a DVD disk from a network drive, when the network went down. The DVD was thus left in some intermediate state, and now I can't seem to format/erase it so that I can reuse it!
Whenever I insert the DVD into my mac mini (OS X 10.5.6) the drive churns the disk for a bit and then spits it out. I don't get a chance to let the Disk Utility wipe the disk for reuse. Annoyingly I'd only just bought the bloody thing and it was my first attempt to use it. I used another disk from the same pack I bought and that worked, so it's not a disk incompatibility.
Is there some key modifier I can use to stop OS X trying to read the disk so that I can let Disk Utility get at it? I already tried changing the "CDs and DVDs" default behaviour from the preferences pane.
P

You now have a nice, shiny drink coaster. Cheap!
Unfortunately, optical disks, even RWs, can be so badly corrupted that nothing can figure them out well enough to even erase them. They are quite different from magnetic tapes or disks, which can be erased no matter their condition.

  • Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K05 superdrive can't erase or burn DVD-RW

I've noticed lots of users are having issues with their slot-loading superdrives and I'm wondering if anyone's issue matches this one:
I can successfully read and write: CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-DL and can READ an already burned DVD-RW, but I can't erase a DVD-RW that's already burned nor can I burn a blank DVD-RW. Inserting a blank DVD-RW results in ejecting the disc after about 30 seconds, no error messages, just ejects.
I've tried Maxell DVD-RW and Memorex DVD-RW. Same results.
An already burned DVD-RW (from a different burner) mounts fine on the desktop, but when I try to erase using Toast 7, I get the following message:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
It recognizes that it's a DVD-RW, but treats it as though it were a DVD-R.
Using Disk Utility to erase results in a more generic error message:
Optical Erase failed with the error:
    Optical Erase Failed
I had an online chat with an Apple rep who had me reset the PRAM, no change. Then we tried from another account, no change. Their next recommendation was to re-install the OS using Archive and Install, which I have my doubts about doing. Failing that, they recommend bringing the iMac in to a service store to possibly replace the drive. But based on what I've been reading about all the different superdrive problems users are having, I'm reluctant to even do that for fear of having an even worse problem with a different drive crop up at some point.
Has anyone out there had this exact problem and found a solution yet?
Seems like a simple firmware update for the drive could fix everything but I'm unable to find one.

    hi there--
instead of just resetting pram i would try booting to
open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and then type
    in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. see if that
works. if it doesn't then try resetting the smu.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
there is a remote possibility that this is software
related, but it almost never is, and these things
are much more likely to resolve your problem than
doing an archive and install, and they are much less
hassle free. let me know if that works. [ 8 ) ]
OK, I booted into open firmware and did all the resets. No improvement. In fact, now I can't even mount some DVD-Rs that I had successfully burned before and mounted before. The drive has always been a little touchy with some discs, especially DVDs, but now seems to be even more hit-and-miss. CD-R and CD-RW reliably mount but DVDs have me worried. It took a long time for my OS X install disc to mount and display the window.
I think it may be time to take it in to Apple and replace it. I may also consider purchasing a Firewire burner with a tray!
Just wondering also if PatchBurn would fix this by creating a new profile or if this truly is a hardware issue. http://www.patchburn.de/
    Thanks for your help.

  • DVD's now being ejected from drive

I've seen several posts about faulty DVD drives and now mine seems to be playing up.
I haven't watched any DVD's on my Macbook really until a few days back however now the drive just spits the discs back out.
I've tried standard DVD and DVD-R's some which were working fine yesterday and some fresh from the box but none are read (and they work fine on my PC). Audio CD's still seem to work though.
Is there anything I can try to help this, I've been through the page about optical drives in Apple support... although haven't tried resetting the PRAM yet.
There's an Apple Store just down the road which I'll try tomorrow if this carries on.
I was wondering if the drive needed replacing could I pay to have it upgraded to a Superdrive (and if anyone has done this how much it would be)?
    Thanks,
    Neil

That doesn't seem to have worked unfortunately... thanks for the reply Mort.

  • Topic: "Please insert a blank DVD-R disk".  DVD burning prob

    Hey everyone out there,
My imac is a week old now and i'm starting to experience dvd burning problems. Here is the low down. Used 1-step dvd feature in idvd5 to burn a mini-dv tape from my sony dcr-hc42. It burned succesfully on the 1st 2 tries. On the 3rd try it says to "insert blank dvd-r disk" and spits out the blank dvd. I've read different posts that say to try using dvd -r disks - only suggestion I could find. I have been using dvd -r disks - in fact I've tried 3 different kinds (sony, TDK, memorex) all with the same result. I also got a suggestion to dl toast and test the burner with toast - Same result. It won't even read the blank dvd-r in the drive. Is my burner having problems or is this a problem with ilife 5. It's still new and under warranty so I'll give apple a call and post their directions here. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
Where would I be without this forums!!! (on my windows computer, bleh!) =)

    Hey Jordan,
I dl'd patchburn and it does the same thing as it did with idvd and toast. It says "please insert a blank dvd-r disk" then ejects the disk. D'oh!!! I just finished talking with apple tech support and here's the low down:
we tried reading the blank disk with finder. Wouldn't even show up on desktop. Then we popped in a movie dvd - read just fine. We went in to system preferences (cds/dvds) - everything a ok. Finally, popped in the mac os disk and did a new archive install - same result =( The tech told me to take it into an apple store which I will be doing soon. Their explanation was that since it was reading the data dvds fine, the problem was the head that detects blank dvds was malfunctioning ( i guess it has 2 heads - 1 to read the data and 1 to detect blank disks). Either way it's covered under warranty ( 1 week old) so hopefully they'll take care of it. I'll post more news once I get it back - crossing my fingers X .....
By the way, thanks for the replies. This forum system is awesome.

Yesterday I opened up the iMac and reinstalled the drive to make sure that it was not an alignment problem.   I still can not eject.   When I try to eject the drive makes noises like it is ejecting but the disk does not come out.
How do I solve this problem?

    Hi again Hal
Link to your other thread > The slot loading CD/DVD drive in my...: Apple Support Communities
You have also tried resetting the PRAM as I suggestion in your other thread...?
See resetting the PRAM > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

USB connections are by nature designed to be plugged and unplugged as needed.
Unless the BackupDrive is backing up, you could potentially drag the drive to the Trashcan before disconnecting the cable, and then disconnect.
The Scanner should also have no issues being unplugged.
If You don't need the keyboard while burning, You could unplug that.
The Mouse you'll likely need, to interact with the burning software, so probably that would not be a good thing to unplug.
All in all the Scanner and Keyboard should be the least hassle to unplug.
For the future you may want to buy a USB HUB so you have more USB ports you can use without having to unplug things.

  • How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc which has ample remaining free space? After preparing the new video for burning and clicking on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject.

How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc with a video previously successfully recorded on it? (The disc has ample remaining free space.)
After preparing the new video for burning and clicking in the File menu on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject. My assumption has been that iDVD would automatically find the free space and continue with the new recording from there. I'd be grateful if anyone can shine light on this.

There are, but not with a DVD written as a movie disk. It must be closed when completed, or it doesn't work.
Apple's built in Burn utility also automatically closes any data CD, DVD or Blu-ray disk you burn. Doesn't matter how much space is unused, you can't use it. You'd have to use a more advanced disk creation app, such as Toast Titanium. I then have the option of choosing to write the data as a session:
I can keep doing this until the disk is full. If I've written five sessions to the disk, when I put it in the drive, five CD/DVD icons will appear on the desktop since the OS will treat each session as if they are separate physical disks. At any point you choose Write Disk when writing a group of data, that means you're closing the disk, and again can't add anything after that. So if I had written two sessions, and the third was Write Disk, it's over. I can't put anything else on that disk.

  • Blank DVD-R being ejected

When I insert a blank DVD-R it is ejected. No icon appears on my desktop
System Pref is set to iPhoto, how do I change this to "Open Finder"?

The drive accepts discs but they do not mount or are automatically ejected
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Reset the Power Manager (PMU) or System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. For example a "combo drive" can read a DVD-R and burn a CD-R however it cannot burn a DVD-R. The utility System Profiler may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
If the discs continue to not be recognized, please contact Apple, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store for additional troubleshooting, evaluation, or service.

Dudes! Let me weigh in here as a computer doofus and CD whiz. I'm kinda helpless in OS-X, but with laser problems I have 20 years of experience on all makes (as a retired CD and DVD technician). I've never seen a "Cleaner-CD" that did more than you could do with a puff of air like to blow out a candle. The coating on the laser lenses attracts dust and gets frosted with things like smoke from cigarettes and incense (things basically of an oily nature). But since our BoulderBoy can read CDs, there must be some recognition routine that the machine is failing at. A lens can be surgically cleaned with a humid (not wet) Q-tip (I made thousand$ doing just that) if your technique is good, but this sounds like an internal sensor or switching routine. Not worth servicing, try some voodoo. I used to keep some Brazilian "tools" for makes like Tandberg, Futterman, and Carver... things like a stone hammer for alignments and a gourd rattle for mysterious ghosts in the machine.

Yes, you can use them.  As I recall the only concern is that they may not work in DVD players manufactured before 2002.
