Unrecognized ipod mini

I've recently had some major issues with my ipod mini which I bought last summer. When I plug it into my USB cable cord into my computer windows has a message that pops up that says that the device has malfunctioned and that it is not recognized. I took my ipod to the apple store and had a genious look at it. She erased my hard drive and said that my ipod just needed to be charged and it would work. Now that my ipod is charged I still cannot get it to work and become recognized by windows. I tried deleting itunes and starting over. I tried using an older itunes version. Nothing is working! I use my ipod on a daily basis normally, so not having it for this amount of time is killing me. I'll take any help anyone has got to give!

this is my problem also... the only thing different is that i followed apples old to new computer transfer instructions and they told me to reset my Ipod and every since my old computer and new one doesn't reconize my ipod... man i miss my ipod. i just got new songs i wanted to add to it and everything. now all my ipod does is charge on either of my computers. let me know if you find something out because i sure haven't. that's like a waste of 200 something dollars.

    Hi TherAscendedSaiyan,

  • New Ipod Mini (2nd Generation) Unrecognized by Windows XP Pro

I'm beside myself with frustration after two days of trying to get this to work. Three XP Pro computers tell me "USB Device not recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned - Windows does not recognize it. For assistance click this message"
    Other points I have determined:
    - My son and daughter both have ipod minis that are recognized on at least one of these computers.
    - I have used their cables with same (non) results
    - Windows Explorer can see and access the Mini when in disk mode.
    - Have tried both original and latest ipod and itunes software - same result.
    - Ipod plays the default music selection on it perfectly
    - Took it to an apple reseller who plugged it into a Mac and it was recognized immediately. He offered to reset it for me for $30 but said there were no guarantees this would fix my problem.
    - Technician identified this as a "British" ipod.
    - Can't reset the device as I can't connect (Catch 22). I think this is key to my problem.
    - Tried running the ipod software and connecting in safe mode to eliminate any conflicts - nada...
    - Tried all the other suggestions offered in the white papers on the Apple website, but still no joy...
    - Feel Steve is getting even with me for buying a PC...
    Thoughts, anyone?
    TIA,
    Peter

After reading some of the commentary here, I am beginning to question whether the latest ipod software for Windows is truly functional. Is it working for anyone?
    TIA

  • Can i have an ipod mini and an ipod nano on same account

My daughter got an ipod mini 2 christmas's ago and so we have an itunes account. This christmas my son got an ipod nano because they had discontinued the minis. My son likes a lot of the songs that my daughter had on her ipod and i really dont want to use all that money just to rebuy songs. I was wondering if there was any way that I could use one account and they both have the same songs on their ipods.
      Windows XP

There are a couple of methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. One way is is to set your preferences so each iPod is updated with only certain playlists within one library. You could create one playlist for the Mini and one for the Nano. Each playlist can have whatever songs you like in it drawn from the single library. Have a look at the article linked below: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer

  • IPod Mini not recognized by iTues or Computer since last time I connected.

I am creating this as a new post to get some data not a fix. If you find an answer start a new post.
Around Thanksgiving my iPod Mini that worked for over a year is no longer recognized by iTunes (Actually it shows as a bad file folder then dissapears in Windows Explorer).
I did everything the trouble shooting instructions suggest at least 5 times, except I can't restore because the computer does not recognize the iPod.
I was about to give up on iPods when... in a meeting at work I learned 3 out of 5 iPod users said the same thing happen since Thanksgiving and the others don’t think they have sync'ed yet.
Please just post a ME TOO! response if you have the same issue described above and (In this order):

4.You restarted your computer and made sure you have the latest windows software updates installed.
5.Removed iTunes software and then reinstall latest iPod and iTunes software.
6.CAN NOT RESTORE your iPod because your computer does not recognize it.

  • IPod Mini No Longer Recognized by G5 10.2.8?

I connected an iPod Mini to a new iMac with 10.4.4 to charge it and now the Mini is not recognized by a G5 with 10.2.8. I read that 10.2.8 does not support USB 2.0. For some reason, the iPod was updated to USB 2.0 and the driver is not downward compatible. So, I puchased a firewire-dock cable. The iPod Mini is still not recognized. Apple's support suggests the 5 Rs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950
I can't try the last one, Restore, because the Mini is not recognized. How can you Restore if the iPod Mini is not in the iTunes Source List?

Never mind. I used the iPod Updater 2006-06-28 to restore and everything's fine.

  • Windows Vista User: iPod Mini found but driver not...

    Hi There,

Upon connecting the iPod to the laptop though I have hit a major problem - Window's finds the hardware but not the driver and so it won't work. I've tried everything which the 'support' section has suggested but it just won't work!!

  • "Playlists no longer exsist" message in iTunes when syncing my iPod Mini

Whenever I plug my mini into my itunes the error message: "songs cannot be synced because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist".
I've tried restoring and reinstalling the software but it doesn't seem to be working. What's going on?

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Mini. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • IPod mini seen on desktop, not in iTunes

The iPod is fully charged, I have reset it about 4 times, I've restarted my computer, and I've done everything else detailed here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/695939?start=0&tstart=0
(though one of the messages is for a Windows computer)
I am on a MacBook running OS X (10.6.8) - as much as my MacBook, bought in 2007, can handle.
My ipod mini has always worked just fine with my MacBook. But now:
It shows up on the desktop when i plug it in
It shows the "do not disonnect" screen (as it should)
It does NOT show up in iTunes
What's changed between the time the iPod worked with iTunes and now:
I was playing it while I thought I was charging it, but hadn't plugged it in properly. It shut down - and all of my music on it was erased
I went from OS X 10.4 all the way to OS X (10.6.8)
I've updated iTunes several times since then (really, does a week go by when iTunes *isn't* updated?
So.... other ideas not already named at
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/695939?start=0&tstart=0
I also have an iBook clamshell running OS 9, with the last version of iTunes that would work on such, but it doesn't work on that - and from what I've read, it never did work on OS 9.

"Have you tried doing a Reset... while it is connected (with docking cable) to the Mac that is running iTunes?"
Yes. Three times. Like I said - I've tried everything detailed here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/695939?start=0&tstart=0
"Since this is an old iPod mini, do you use USB or FireWire to connect it.  It should work with either, but it may work better with FireWire (if you have a FireWire docking cable)."
No FireWire docking cable for the iPod (frown)
"Does the iPod mini still work properly when it is disconnected?  Charges, plays songs, displays its screens and menus..."
Yes - although, as I said, all music is gone. But otherwise, it works just fine.
"doing a low level reformat of the iPod's storage disk using Disk Utility. "
Looked hopeful! But... got an error. Tried it a couple of times... in fact, every time iTunes starts up when I plug in my iPod (and it always does, even if it won't show my iPod mini on the left side), I get an error saying.... something about not being able to fix the device...
I'm wondering if I should try an alternative to iTunes and see if *that* can see the iPod mini...
Thanks, Kenichi Watanabe and planb77, for trying. It's appreciated.

  • Mac Formatted iPod Mini, want to use on PC then back to Mac?

I want to use my Mac formatted iPod Mini on a PC when I'm away for Christmas, but when I return home I want to use it on my Mac again. Is formatting the iPod to a PC required to do this? I don't want to lose all my music when I'm away because there will be no way to get it back till I return home. And, if I must format for a PC, what will happen when I plug it back into a Mac? Do I have to reformat again? Has anybody accomplished this successfully?

An iPod formatted with Windows will work with Windows or Mac.
An iPod formatted with Mac will not work on Windows. WIndopws cannot read Mac.
If you format with Windows, you will not need to reformat with Mac.

  • How to restore iCal and Address Book from my iPod mini.

I used to back-up my iCal and Address Book to both my Nokia phone and my iPod mini twice a day. then over Christmas my laptop hard drive and my phone both broke within 2 days of each other. Ouch! My only copy of my addresses and diary are now on the iPod. I could spend days reading the data and type it into to computer manually, but there has to be a way to do it automatically. *Mustn't there?*

    Similar problem here,
I have a month-old archived version of my AddressBook, but today my entire rolodex vanished when the program froze and I force quit. I have a much more recent update on my ipod and have made significant additions/editions in the past month. Can I retrieve all that data from my iPod??
    Help!

  • Unable to update Ipod mini / Computer not responding to Ipod

I recently switched computers and I installed the iPod mini software onto my new computer. This worked at first but when I started moving music from iTunes onto my iPod from my new computer, the downloads would stop even though the music had not been fully downloaded. When I checked my iPod, the new music was not there. I downloaded the new iTunes and the new updater. I then tried to update my iPod software but it said "Firmware failure" and then my iPod mini started showing me the exclamation mark folder every time I turned it on. I tried to restore the iPod using my new computer but everytime I tried to do that, it showed "Firmware failure." Next, I plugged my iPod mini into my old computer and used an old update program to restore the iPod and it worked. When I plugged the iPod back into my new computer, the computer would take a long time to recognize the player but iTunes wouldn'recognize it at all. When I try to update the ipod mini software, it shows initializing for a long time before the program crashes.
What should I do to get this ipod working again?

ok try this ...... this is the totally resetting things to do !!!!! first holthe center and the menu down when the apple comes then hold the center and the play down...... then it should be totally reset.... then install the new ipod updater and itunes 4.9 and then try if it works ...........
