Unrecognized Library since 4.9

I'm operating Windows XP on a Gateway Desktop and have my iTunes music stored on a Maxtor external hard drive (for storage space purposes).
Everything has worked fine with my 40GB iPod until I downloaded iTunes 4.9 (I believe - maybe it was 4.8).
Upon downloading, my library was no longer recognized in iTunes. I then would get the "...iPod is linked to another music library...do you want to change the link & replace all existing songs/playlists w/those from this library [YES] [NO]..." message. I've always clicked [NO] because I never had to do this with any previous updates and didn't want to lose anything (mainly playlists).
Now that 5.0 has come along, I downloaded it & it still gives me the same warning message. I've tried Dmitry's solution:
Dmitry Byk, "Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...", 12:19am Sep 11, 2005 CDT
but have has no such success.
Should I click [YES]? Is this the natural solution? Am I being overly paranoid? Is there a reason it no longer immediately recognizes my library?
Please help...

Clicking "yes" will erase the iPod and sync it to your current iTunes library. If you have all the same songs and playlists in iTunes that you have on the iPod, then it's no big deal, it'll resync them to the iPod.

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive.  It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas?  I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.

  • IPhoto won't import movies (.mov, .mp4) into the library since last upgrade to 9.5.1 (902.17)

iPhoto won't import movies (.mov, .mp4) into the library since last upgrade to 9.5.1 (902.17). Error message is "File format not recognized". Before that, no problem. Had them first on SD-card over USB, tried then to copy to the HD (Desktop) and import from there, but didn't work. Imported successfully into iMovie and exported as .mp4, but even this is not recognized.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

Why is it that every time I reboot my computer I have to reload a new library since my old one is in the recycle bin.

Well I just recently downloaded the application "Whatsapp" again after I synced my new iPhone 5 to my computer and it wasn't there. So I actually went into the app store and downloaded it from that again. It didn't make me pay the .99 cents as before though. Maybe because I was already in the system. This has really agrovated me, because none of my friends that use "Whatsapp" with thier iPhones experience this problem.
    Someone help please!

  • IPhoto won't open my library since updating to 7.1.4

Since upgrading to 7.1.4 iPhoto does not automatically open my library. It opens a new library. I closed iPhoto and reopened while hitting "option" to select my iPhoto library (its on an external drive) and my iPhoto library is greyed out and not an option to open from the iPhoto dialog. I also tried to double click the library and it asked me to select an application from which to open it. I selected iPhoto and I received the following error:
"An error occurred while changing the application that opens "iPhoto Library" because not enough information is available. Do you want to open "iPhoto Library" with "iPhoto"? ?
I said "update" and it opened iPhoto with no photos.
I said "get info" for my iPhoto library and it's called a "package" and its 43.77GB. If I "show package contents" I see all of my photos.
    Can anyone help me?

I closed iPhoto and reopened while hitting "option" to select my iPhoto library (its on an external drive) and my iPhoto library is greyed out and not an option to open from the iPhoto dialog.
This means that iPhoto does not see a valid library there - in other words a damaged database file.
also tried to double click the library and it asked me to select an application from which to open it.
    Another indication of this.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • IPhoto library in iPod view doesn't match my iPhoto library since Lion

Help: Since installing Lion my iPhoto library no longer syncs to my iPod Touch. It's as if the iPhoto library stopped updating in the iPod window the moment I upgraded. All previous photos still show up. It's like iTunes thinks I have an alternate iPhoto library or something. Can anyone help?

Try restoring the iPod to factory settings.
This will erase the iPod hard drive completely so you can effectively start from scratch.

  • Screensaver wont use iphoto library since mountain lion

Since upgrading to mountain lion, my screensaver wont work with iphoto library... 27" 2.8GHZ iMac, 16 GB Ram.
iPhoto library has around 24000 pics in it.
    Thanks.

I did a clean install of Mountain Lion on my MBP. I couldn't find my Lion disk and ended up deciding to buy iPhoto from the App Store. I imported my iPhoto library from a back up and iPhoto updated everything, everything works fine - except that when I was looking around Mountain Lion and went to look at the screensavers, none of the fancy photo slideshows will let me use my own photos. The only options I get are the four default collections and a 'Choose Folder...' option. Since the photos are all packaged up in the iPhoto library, I can't select them (it's greyed out). I was expecting my albums, events, faces etc to be listed automatically. Tried the command above but it didn't work.

  • Apps Section Missing From Library Since iTunes Update

Since updating my iTunes with the new version, Apps have disappeared from the Library section in the top left hand side of the iTunes window.
Is anyone else affected by this?
Does anyone know how I can get it back?
I've already tried uninstalling QuickTime and iTunes and then reinstalling both.

Solved it. If anyone who owns an iPhone, who recently updated iTunes and the OS on the phone, who noticed that the Apps option disappeared from the Library section on the top left hand side of the screen - just download something from iTunes and it will reappear - why the fudge it had to disappear in the first place is just silly.
    Good night

  • Apple TV does not find Itunes library (since Yosemite). Itunes finds apple tv without a problem.

Since Yosemite, my apple tv 3 (latest software) does not find my itunes library anymore (imac 27" late 2013). Vice versa, via Itunes (latest version) I can perfectly stream music and videos to my apple TV. So there is communication between the two devices, but for some reason Apple TV does not find my itunes library. Sometimes rebooting all my devices works.
    any solutions for this problem?

I solved this problem in this way:
    go to Preferences -- Sharing
change the name of your mac (delete ALL the existing name and choose another one)
    close Preferences
    restart Mac
    open itunes
now check if everything works on apple tv.

  • We have 3 computers that have been authorized to home share but we cannot see eachothers library since updated to the latest version.  Is there something I am misssing?

We have 3 computers that have the latest itunes version and now we cannot see eachothers library anymore.  All of them are authorized. I unauthorized, reauthorized, in both the store and itunes to no avail.  Is this just the way the new version is designed or is there something we are missing? I recently wiped the computer clean of all Itunes songs/files after several years of my son managing his itouch on it, so we are all clean of previous files. What is the deal?

It most definitely is the browser that is causing most of the problems. I have used Firefox so long, I can't even remember. Maybe since its beginning. But today is a sad day. I gave up on it. I can't accomplish anything and end up spending hours troubleshooting. I see I am not alone. I am so sick of it "not responding." It's simply not worth it to spend so much time trying to make the thing work, so I can actually do something. Installed, removed, reinstalled numerous times, and I can't fix your software on my Win 7 Pro machine. No problems with IE or Chrome. So. as much as I hate Google Update, Chrome has won the test. Sad, sad day for me to lose Firefox, but it just does not work on the Win 7 machine. I don't have the same issues with the XP machine and have exactly all the same add-ons. Keep it up developers and you will have no Win 7 users at all.

  • Homesharing only shows partial library since updating iTunes and iOS

Made mistake of updating iphone, ipad, and PC to latest versions of iTunes and iOS> Ever since then homesharing will only show partial iTunes library on ipad or iphone. Don't know if problem is with iTunes or iOS, or both.
I have tried remove and reinstall itunes on pc. I've tried turning homesharing on/off on all devices - sometimes it works once or twice and then next time I try to use homesharing it doesn't work again.

This is a recurring problem. The only solution I am aware of is to restore your device (both an iPhone5 and iPad2 in my case) to factory settings and then restore your data from your most recent backup. It will then share the entire library from your in your iTunes on your computer. However, after a few uses of the shared library on your device, the same problem will re-occur; at some point only a portion of the library will be shared, and you will have to re-do the restore routine.
Since this problem occurs on both my iPhone 5 and iPad2, I have concluded (for now, anyway), that this is a problem with iTunes, not with my devices.
I hope this admittedly cumbersome solution is helpful

  • Iphoto having troubles upgrading library since yosemite update

I have been trying to upgrade my iphoto library from the iphoto '09 to the iphoto'11 since I upgraded to yosemite. Every time I open the application to upgrade my library it starts upgrading then seems to get stuck at the same point each time.  There are no error warnings or anything, the bar simply stops moving.  I have left it trying to upgrade overnight and even all day one day but every time it stops about a quarter of the way.  Does anyone know how I can get access to my photos again?  I did back up my computer before I installed yosemite just in case, so if necessary I can go back to mavericks but I would like to get yosemite working as I do like it other than my problems with iphoto. Thanks!

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can i delete my iPhoto library (since I have Photos)?

Now that I've upgraded to Photos, can I delete my iPhoto library in User/Pictures?  With Photos, it created a parallel (same size) Photos library next to my iPhoto library.  Not sure I want two of the same photos on my HD and backups (since the size is considerable).  It made my SugarSync go over its limit, for instance.  I know that keeping the iPhoto library enables me to click on it specifically and open up the photos in iPhoto (instead of Photos).  If I delete my iPhoto library, just keeping my new Photos library with the same photos and movies, will it be detrimental in any way to my seeing the photos in Photos?  Does Photos have any dependence on the iPhoto library, or is the iPhoto library just an archive at this point?  Thank you!

With Photos, it created a parallel (same size) Photos library next to my iPhoto library.
The size you are seeing in the Finder is misleading. The new Photos Library and the iPhoto Library are sharing the image files and each photo is stored only one, see: Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
    Also: http://sixcolors.com/post/2015/02/the-hard-link-between-photos-and-iphoto/
You could delete the iPhoto Library and the Photos library will continue to work, but deleting the iPhoto Library will not free much disk space, because of the hard links from Photos.  I would wait a bit, before taking  this step and deleting the iPhoto Library.  Check your photos library thoroughly, before you delete if.
If you should discover later, that the migration of your libraries has been faulty and you need to repeat it after repairing your libraries, you will be out of luck.
Remember, it is is just a few days after the first release of Photos as version 1.0.  There are very likely some bugs and I would not burn all bridges before the library has been thoroughly tested and you are very confident, that this early Photos release is working well on your Mac.
