Unrecognized printer
I am trying to connect an HP6480 printer. I have installed the sw, but the computer says there is no driver installed. The software does show up in my applications folder. I uninstalled and downloaded the driver from the HP website to see if this would make a difference and it did not work either... no driver installed. I also tried installing on an apple laptop and the same thing happened. What should I do?? I have OS 10.3.9.
Well, there are a few ways to connect the printer; one may be to use Ethernet if the
printer is so equipped and that may be more trouble than it is worth; depending on
what headway you can get if you try that route.
How to set up HP Printer via Ethernet:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Howto+set+up+HP+Printer+via+ethernet&btnG=GoogleSearch
How did you upgrade to OS X 10.3.9? If the last upgrade was achieved by using
the smaller download upgrade "step" from, say 10.3.8 to 10.3.9, you could go
and get the larger Combo upgrade download, then repair disk permissions with
Disk Utility, the install the Combo upgrade file, then re-repair disk permissions.
While this may not solve this printer issue, if you did upgrade with a small file
back when you did, from the lower levels of Panther to the last one, a better
build quality can be achieved by going and renewing that last step in this way.
Since the Combo replaces more system parts than a delta update, this is OK.
And it can be installed right over what you have.
But back to this printer issue; you could (if the printer series has ethernet port)
try another route to making the printer work. I have read where some users of
HP printers and drivers had various issues and have tried to avoid their stuff.
That said, I have to try using an HP all-in-one, myself; since an elder relative
has a new (as new, two year old) one in the box from a warehouse store and
I found there was a software driver update from HP on their web site for that'n.
I do not know how to set a printer up via ethernet; so maybe we both could
learn something about how this option may be helpful as an alternative(?)

I am attempting to get my iMac G5 (10.3.9 OS) to recognize an hp 11p laserjet printer. Connection via a parallel to USB cable. Printer not on Apple list. hp website no help. I would appreciate any comment or help. Thanks!
Sorry, Jake, I meant "parallel to USB" converter cable.
Some brands of cables seem to work better than others for this sort of purpose. You will find a useful listing HERE
For drivers for older or non-standard printers for Macs the best bet is usually http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/

Starting to think I should take it to the apple store, however I want to see if anyone else has been having the same problem because so far touch id has been more annoying than useful.
I have the same issue, it works for a while then won't work hardly at all. Then start working again. I wish it would just work like it supposed too. I hear it has trouble with wet or clamy hands but mine are rarely like that. I do work outside with my hands and the are kind of tough and callused up. I wonder if that effects it some. Anyway let me know if you figure out how to make it work reliably

So I recently got an iPhone 5s in space grey. I set up my fingerprint the first day and it worked perfectly fine. However, after 2 days, i would use my finger to unlock my phone and it would told me it was an unrecognized print. I unlocked my phone, set up my finger again, told me it successfully set my finger to unlock it, and when I tried to unlock my phone again, it still told me it was an unrecognized finger. I tried restoring my phone, turning off passcode and turning it back off, i even cleaned the home button and cleaned my finger to see if it worked. My other friends tried it and when they set their finger, and tried to unlock the phone, it did so perfectly. I'm really worried that there may be something wrong that I cannot fix.
Also, btw, I have this weird anxiety problem where I bite my skin on my thumb and sometimes cause it to peel off (please don't judge). Can that also contribute to the problem? I don't think it does since the touch ID worked fine when I started using the phone. Also, whenever I try to set my finger now, most of the time it displays a "Failed" message, telling me it was not successful. Please Help :/Hi jaz1204,

Hi everyone. I'm hoping to find some help.
I have a Brother HL-2140 laser printer that I've been using without trouble for over a year. Just a couple of hours ago I went to print something, and suddenly the printer queue said that the printer was not online. Figuring this was weird, I then ran the gamut of my (admittedly little) knowledge of how to fix it: Check USB cable and connections, restart printer, restart computer, reinstall drivers, try re-adding on Print & Fax System Pref pane, Google. Still the same message. Like a fool, I eventually removed the printer entirely from my added printers, expecting it to just show up again and I could re-add it, and now it's not showing up AT ALL. So now I'm here.
The only thing I found from Googling that might be worthwhile is that I recently (mid-October) bought an external usb hard drive that I've been using to back up with Time Machine, and I came across discussions elsewhere that pointed to that being a possible reason the printer isn't now being detected. While I've been using a different printer at school lately, I'm positive I've been printing since I got the hard drive so I can't figure out why it picked tonight to all of a sudden bugger up. I don't want to think it's the cable because there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but maybe I'll buy another just to be sure.
Any feedback would be appreciated.Turns out it WAS just the cable. Oy.

Black inkchange unrecognized by printer
On a four ink printer, I replaced all four inks but the black one isn't recognized by the printer. I repeated the installation but I got the same issue; My printer model is HP Photosmart 5514
Is it that the black won't print or is it giving an error message? Is the printer in warranty?

HP 2025/XP: Error Message when printing envelopes wider than long
Is there any way to print envelopes wider than long (e.g., A2 through A7) without getting the error message "Unrecognized Paper" and encountering long cleaning cycles between each envelope. I prefer not to feed envelopes end-ways as they tend to gather due to the paper layers. I have had some success in using cut-to-size card stock under the flap (secured with a post-it) to make the printer "think" that the envelope is longer than wide, but this is time-consuming as well. Thanks for any help.
This seems to be a commercial product. For the best chance at finding a solution I would suggest posting in the forum for HP Business Support!
You can find the Commercial Laserjet board here:

I recently had to replace a cartridge in my HP Deskjet D4160 printer. Whenever I do this, I realign the carts using the HP printer maintenance utility. However, I've discovered that the align function no longer works. I assume this is related to the HP driver update that occurred a few months ago. Other than this alignment problem, my printer works fine.
I'm running Leopard 10.5.5 on an iMac, The printer drivers are identified as 2.3.3. I ran the system console when I clicked on the "align" button and got the following message:
Oct 16 11:30:27 Cesium HP Printer Utility[364]: * -[HSDDeviceIdStateChecker isPenSetIncorrect]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x4d17f0
As a check, I hooked up my printer to an old PPC iBook running 10.4.11 with printer drivers version 4.0.1. The align function worked just fine.
Any suggestions about what to do to get "align" back?Is there any error message on your computer?
An error message clarifying the problem should appear on your PC screen or within the HP Solution Center Software.
The specific error should be identified using your PC, as the blinking like may indicate either a paper jam, missing paper, a problem with one of the cartridges..
Make sure to follow the steps relevant for the problem you are seeing both by your printer and PC:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00635074&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=501857&tmp_...
As well, make sure the printer is properly connected in order the software will indicate the software.
If you cannot see any indication on your PC, please verify if the Full HP Software is installed (will be listed under Control Panel > Uninstall a Program)
As well, enter Control Panel > Devices and Printers:
Place your mouse cursor above the printer icon, a note indicating the printer status should appear above - what is the printer state and how many documents are placed within the print queue?
Say thanks by clicking the Kudos thumb up in the post.

Printer Works then Does Not?
Hello,
I was curious if anybody else has had a problem where a TimeCapsule shared printer works initially when the TimeCapsule is turned on or rebooted but after some time becomes unrecognized.
My printer is a Samsung ML-2510 monochrome laser printer which is connected to the TimeCapsule via a USB cable. When I start up the TimeCapsule he printer works fine and I can print but after about a day I loose access to the printer. The AirPort utility reports 'No Printers' when the printer is connected and powered.
I have tried the following steps to try to find the problem, without powering down either the TimeCapsule or printer:
1. Disconnect the printer from the USB port and attach it directly to my MacBook, The printer is detected and prints.
2. Attach USB hard disk to the TimeCapsule, The disk is recognized and I have access to the USB hard disk.
3. Disconnect the hard disk drive and reconnect the confirmed working printer to the TimeCapsule USB port, AirPort utility reports No USB Printers connected and I cannot print.
The above steps show that the Printer is not at fault and the USB port on the TimeCapsule is working but for some reason the two will not work together unless I reboot the TimeCapsule which in this household causes mayhem.
This problem has just appeared and the only thing I think could have caused this is a recent firmware update (7.3.2).
Has anybody else had a similar problem? If so were you able to correct the error?
Thanks.Ah thanks for that, I searched all through my Time Capsule's options - not just the dust issue, means I dont have to go upstairs either now
p.s.Bug still here, just appears intermittent, printer disappears immediately after a print job is done - so TC needs a reboot before next print (sometimes).
For those talking about resetting the Mac etc this is a bug within the Time Capsule itself as that looses contact with the printer.
I also find it very odd that since day 1, the TC needed to be reset/powered up AFTER the printer has powered up for the printer to be detected. I thought the whole point of USB was "plug and play" or is that a Microsoft thing lol. -
Ink system failure printhead unrecognized
I keep getting ink system failure errors and printhead is missing or unrecognized. I have turned off and restarted the printer and unplugged and replugged the printer. I ran the diagnostics. At first it said there was a printhead problem but now it says everything is OK but it will not print a test page. There was no decline in print quality before it failed. It stopped printing suddenly after printing several jobs perfectly. I was about to buy a new printer when it printed something from a different computer on my network (a MAC), so the printhead and cartridges are actually working fine. Why is there a communication problem from my usual computer? What can I check now?
Hello @Sari44 ,
Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand that your Officejet 6700 has an ink system failure message on it.
I would like to help.
It is odd that you could get a print job from your Mac.
Try going through the following document.

Can't print from Mac to Windows printer
I have a wireless network of 3 computers and a printer. One is a desktop running XP with the printer attached. The other is a laptop with XP. And the last is a MacBook with 10.4.11.
I can print from both computers running XP but I can't print from the Mac. The Mac sees the printer and I can add it and try to print from it. When I try to print I get the error message:
NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY
I later get the "Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds" message too.Be sure the printer name assigned in Windows is not more than 11 alphanumeric characters. Long names with punctuation and the like are known to cause problems.
Look at:

Tutorial: Resolving common printer problems
Mac OS X offers a robust printing system with built-in support for hundreds of devices from a wide body of manufacturers. It's not without flaws, however, and printers often become unrecognized or non-functional after a significant Mac OS X update. Printers connected through hubs or AirPort base stations can also exhibit some frustrating issues.
Below is a run-down of the most generally successful printer workarounds. Keep trying until one of them sticks.
Use Printer Setup Repair This tool lets you verify properties of the root user, the Printing Services (lp) user, and Print Operators (lp) groups, reset the printing system, perform CUPS maintenance and more. Run through its set of maintenance tasks before delving into further printer troubleshooting. See how to use it in this article.
Re-install CUPS If you are experiencing printer issues after applying an incremental Mac OS X update, problems may have occurred with your CUPS installation during the update process.
The file is available from this Web site: http://www.cups.org/software.php, and is labeled cups-1.2.1.dmg
Delete then re-add printers/Reset printing system Open Printer Setup Utility, located in Applications/Utilities and look at the "Printer List" Highlight and delete all entries.
Alternatively, go to the "Printer Setup Utility" menu at the top of the screen and select "Reset Printing System".
Click the "Add" button and re-add your printer(s).
Gutenprint and usbtb Some users have been able to resolve printer communication issues by installing the excellent open-source Epson printer drivers available as part of the Gutenprint package (formerly known as Gimp-print) and usbtb, a CUPS back-end for USB printing.
Remove non-required drivers Removing extraneous drivers from /Library/Printers(name of manufacturer) can sometimes resolve printer issues. Remove files that are for other models than your own.
Re-install drivers Re-installation of printer drivers from original media or from a Web download (either directly through the manufacturers site or via a search by model/manufacturer on VersionTracker) can resolve some printer issues.
Try disconnecting from network In some cases, LAN-connected printer, seemingly broken by the Mac OS X update can restored to normal operation by simply disconnecting the device from the network then re-connecting it.
"Communicator Error" -- try power cycling If you receive a "Communication Error" message when attempting to print after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5, the first workaround you should try is power cycling the printer, as well as disconnecting then re-connecting it to the Mac.
Connecting directly to the Mac If you are having printer problems and are using an external USB hub, try connecting the printer directly to your Mac.
One reader who had success with this method writes:
"Unfortunately the update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 has eliminated the ability to use my Lexmark Z600 series USB printer on my iMac G5 20" iSight (rev C).
"I resolved the problem via the following: I unplugged my external USB hub and plugged the printer directly to my computer."
Disconnect from AirPort and reset For those who are using printers connected to an AirPort Express, Extreme or another wireless device with USB connections, you might want to try the following:
Disconnect the printer from the AirPort unit (or other router)
Wait a few minutes
Plug it back in
Restart the base station unit
Check for your printer to appear in AirPort Admin Utility (located in Applications/Utilities)
Print one copy In some cases, using print one copy instead of the standard print command can result in elimination of crashes that occur during printing.
Try IP printing instead of AppleTalk Some Macs are unable to see AppleTalk printers that are located on the local AirPort (or other wireless) network. Several users have been able to workaround this issue by using IP printing instead of AppleTalk.
Last resort -- Archive and Install As a last resort, try performing the somewhat tedious Archive and Install process, then re-upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.7. This has solved some otherwise inexplicable printer issues for MacFixIt readers. -
ITunes and Mail crashing -- unrecognized selector?
Hi,
My iTunes is crashing everytime I want to add a song to my library. It looks like the problem is in thread 0 and related to com.apple.corefoundation. I've highlighted the relevant lines in the crash report below.
Interestingly, I'm having a similar problem with Mail -- it crashes everytime I try to open. Same error, but in thread 5 (Crashed Thread: 5 Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.background-priority).

Had this problem yesterday while syncing my iphone to PC. iTunes asked if I wanted to upgrade to iTunes 9 and iphone 3.1. I agreed. The sync failed saying it couldn't identify my iphone and then asked me to restore my iphone.
I had to do a restore to get 3.1 loaded (first time I've had a problem with an update) but I did get it done .. then had to reload all my apps, audio, video with a 1+ hr sync.
But it did works .. and no problems of any kind (and my email works just fine)

Exact Printing of a PDF File (no scaling)
We create forms as PDF's that we publish on our WEB site. We also have vendors that produce the same documents with 2D barcodes as PDF's. We scan/image the returned doucuments and run OCR, ICR and 2D interpretation of data. When the public prints the documents in Adobe Reader with scaling set to none (or actual size in Reader X), everything is fine. The issue is when the the users leave the size option set to something other than none or actual. We have margins over 1/2 inch on all sides and the pages will always scale. This moves the exact positioning of the fixed print documents and shrinks the 2D barcodes to where they are unreadable. We have the page scaling set to none in the document itself but of course the user can always override.
I have been told that if you change the size of the page to something less than 8 1/2 by 11, you can prevent the scaling. I have played with this and found that what works best for a laser printer is different than what works with an inkjet. Does anyone know a size that will prevent scaling on the most printers?
Is there any other way to prevent a PDF document from scaling? I have even created a PDF with one word in the middle of am 8 1/2 by 11 page and it will still scale.
Thanks,
DaveDoes anyone have any thoughts on this matter. We already set the pagescaling to none in the document, but it appears that people like to override this setting.
(Optional; PDF 1.6) The page scaling option to be selected when a print dialog is displayed for this document. Valid values are None, which indicates that the print dialog should reflect no page scaling, and AppDefault, which indicates that applications should use the current print scaling. If this entry has an unrecognized value, applications should use the current print scaling. Default value: AppDefault. Note: If the print dialog is suppressed and its parameters are provided directly by the application, the value of this entry should still be used. -
Can't relax - my camera and printer don't work!
The Snow leopard web page tells me to "Relax. Your camera, printer and mouse work too".
Well, my Samsung ML-1210 didn't work but I was able to get it going after install some opensource printer driver (Ghostscript))
And now iPhoto won't import images from my camera (an early model Digital Rebel). It shows the thumbnails of the photos on the camera but when I attempt to import them I get "The following file could not be imported (The file is an unrecognized format)"
(I can import from a Canon SD1000)
However, if I import the photos using iPhoto 8 on a G5 running 10.5 I can then import the photos into my iPhoto 9/10.6 system by (drag n drop)copying the photos from the shared library or by importing the .jpgs which I exported from iPhoto 8.
Image Capture on 10.6 will import the jpg's to the hard drive, but neither iPhoto, Preview or even Photoshop can open them. Preview says "The file “IMG_9564.JPG” could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." (and Preview on the 10.5 system also reports the photo is damaged)
Image capture on 10.5 will import the jpg and it can be opened by Preview/iPhoto etc on 10.5 or 10.6
Is there an issue importing with the Canon Digital Rebel, because I can't relax until that works.gjw wrote:

That is very strange behavior. At the end of the day, a JPEG is a JPEG is a JPEG regardless of how it's imported. If you use a card reader and simply drag the JPEGs off the card to your hard drive rather than using a program to import them, can they be opened in Preview/Photoshop/iPhoto?
If you don't have a card reader, you can do the same thing with the camera. It should mount on the desktop like a drive as long as you turn off having any application automatically open when connecting digital cameras.
