Unrecognized Seagate 320 GB External USB Powered HD

I just purchased a new 320 GB USB External Hard Drive. It is powered through the USB. My 15" PowerBook G4 does not recognize its existence when I plug it in to the USB port. I have tried both ports. They both work with a mouse. I also plugged the drive into my son's laptop pc running Windows XP. It was recognized and worked flawlessly. I have heard rumored that PowerBook USB ports do not supply enough power for external 2-1/2" drives. Could that be the problem? I have not discovered any way to even "see" the drive, in disk utilities, etc.
I just ordered a new 15" MacBook Pro which will be delivered next week. I plan to use the external drive with Time Machine. I was just testing the drive by plugging it into my PowerBook. Is it likely to work with the MacBook Pro? I sure hope so. Otherwise I have a useless external drive. I guess my son could use it. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Since my previous post above, Santa has brought me a new unibody MacBook Pro. Unlike my old Powerbook or almost any other Powerbook G4, it cheerfully powers each of my family's four 250GB Seagate FreeAgent Go USB-powered hard drives without using the dual-corded dock. The MBP's USB ports evidently put out more power than any Powerbook G4 could ever be relied on to provide. I'm delighted about that, and also delighted with the Freeagent Go drives: beautifully designed, well made, warranted for five years, and for $80 each at Costco, a true steal.

  • USB Powered HDD fails - Alu iMac 2.4GHz 21 inch

    Hey folks,
I have an aluminium iMac 2.4GHz 21 inch model.
I have been using externally powered USB and FW devices for a while and had no issues. However, I just picked up a USB powered HDD and it cannot consistently transfer data. This same drive works perfectly on my Dell laptop, and I tried another USB powered drive from a friend (which I also know works) on my iMac and it has the same problem - cannot do any sort of mass data transfer.
I have a powered USB 2 hub (4 port Belkin) and obviously three ports on the iMac.
I also have two externally powered drives, both of which work fine.
It appears that any transfers from the INTERNAL drive to a USB Powered drive work ok, but any significant transfers from a USB drive (externally powered) to the USB powered drive FAIL.
I have tried plugging the USB powered drive into the iMac directly, and into the USB powered hub, no difference.
I suspect that the USB on the iMac just cannot handle either the power requirements or the data throughput requirements.
The external USB powered drives are:
    Western Digital Passport 250GB.
    Iomega Select 500GB.
Any hints? Or is this desktop machine just not made to work with USB powered devices???

If your two powered external drives are always connected to the iMac, you should really reformat them to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+, and not use a Windows format. There are other limitation to FAT32, because it is an old file system from a time when hard drives were very small. One is that data is not stored as efficiently, so the same files (especially if there are a lot of small files) will take up more space on the drive. Another potential conflict is file naming convention; an allowed file name on one may not be allowed in the other (between a Windows format and a Mac format). There is also no journaling with FAT32, which is a feature that helps with data corruption issues. There are probably other disadvantages to using FAT32 on a Mac.
As a test with that external USB-powered drive (the one you own), you should use Disk Utility to reformat it to a Mac format. Then, try the file transfer again. If it works, then the cause was the existing formatting, although the exact reason may not be clear. If you need it to be FAT32, you can try using Disk Utility to format it as +MS-DOS (FAT)+. Maybe if the Mac does the formatting, it will resolve this problem, even it is still formatted as FAT32 (and it should still work on a PC).
When going from Mac format to Windows format on the entire drive, you may want to use the Disk Utility Partition tab, and not the Erase tab. On the Partition tab, reset the +Volume Scheme+ to one partition. Click the Options button and it will show the three possible choices for +Partition Map Scheme+. When you format it as +MS-DOS (FAT)+, select +Master Boot Record+. When you format it as +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+, select +GUID Partition Table+.

  • Slow performance with Seagate External USB Drive

I have a 250GB Seagate external USB. The external drive is not a pocket drive and it has its own power supply. When I first got the drive (a few months ago) I mounted, paritioned and formatted the drive without any problems. I backed up my Mac HD with the included Bounce Back Express software and it took a few hours with around 60GB of data. I also updated the files a few times over the last few months with no problems.
All of the sudden my Powerbook stopped mounting the Seagate drive when I plugged it in. I went into disk utility and ended up reformatting the drive (with Mac OS extended) and then the Powerbook mounted the drives. However, now when I try to backup files to the drive it is extremely slow. It is only transferring files at around 25 MB per minute. It will take well over 24 hours to back up the drive at this rate when it used to take a few hours.
Seagate's website is no help, all they say is that Powerbook G4's have USB 1.1, not USB 2 which is why it is slow. I know this is not true.
Does anyone have any idea why file transfer to the drive is suddenly so slow?
    Thanks.
    Powerbook G4 15-inch   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Could you describe the cabling which connects the drive to your Mini, how the drive is powered, and what else is connected via usb to your Mini? Thanks!

  • Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 Hard Drive Not Working with Mac Pro

Hi, I have just purchased a brand new Mac Pro.  I have three 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 hard drives that just don't jive with the new Mac Pro's.  When the drive is connected, I cannot access the drive, read/write or even format.  Finder completely locks up and the drive cannot even be force ejected. When I try to format, Disk Utility either spits out an error that the drive cannot be read, or simply locks up.  This happens regardless of the OS on the Mac Pro.  I am currently running 10.10.2
I have ruled out an issues with the drives, as I have tested all of them on a variety of systems and OS's, including Power Mac, Mac Book Pro, PC, OS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 as well as on Windows.  I have tried formatting in every file system including Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), NTFS and exFAT.  ALL other systems have no issues with the drives. Apple has replaced my Mac Pro with a brand new one and the drives still behave the same way.  Furthermore, I have tested the drives on three other Mac Pro's at work and they all reject the drives. So, on their own, there is nothing wrong with the Mac Pro, or the drives. However, the configuration of them together is wreaking havoc.
I have contacted Seagate, and this was their response:
The most recent version of the Backup Plus drives use the USB Attached SCSI (UAS) standard to increase transfer rates.  It's possible that the drivers being used currently on your Mac Pro are having issues using this feature with the standard USB 3.0 drivers installed.  I would recommend contacting Apple to check for any driver updates or see if they any suggestions for issues involving drives using UAS.
I have also started a case with Apple Support (Case # 755934373) and am waiting to hear back regarding Seagate's response.  I've spent DAYS trying to troubleshoot this and am now at a complete loss.  If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears (or eyes in this case).
    Thanks!

    Hi danielsh6,
I recently bought the new Lacie Thunderbolt 2 D2 3TB and I had the same problem as you, i have a macbook pro early 2011, those support thunderbolt but many times there is a bug that doesn't let you connect any thunderbolt drives to your computer. The solution I found was installing this update:
    Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.0
Before doing this I would recommend you updating to mountain lion (not yosemite yet as there is still some glitches and more on preview's macbook pro's).
    Hope this helped!

  • Seagate external USB harddrive

i just purchased a Seagate external USB harddrive. in the manual, they say they do not recommend using the HD "to share data between windows and macintosh operating systems". they say i should initialize it for a Mac OS.
i did see a post here that said "If you want to use it on both Mac OS and Windows it needs to be formatted in FAT32 to allow reading and writing from both systems."
has anyone had any experience with this situation? any comments or instructions are welcome

    Welcome to the discussions!
I looked at Seagate's site and couldn't find any reference to not being able to use a drive between Macs and PCs. I really cannot think of a reason why you can't, unless they just do not want to be responsible for supporting that type of use.

  • Time machine halted when I tried to backup it to an external USB Seagate disk...

I bought an external USB disk (Seagate 3T).  Time machine was successfully running about 6 months ago on that disk.
But today when I tried to backup the documents.  Time machine and the system halted... and I must unplug the USB disk to resume the system.
I tried several times, and it seems the Time Machine could not work well.
Anyone know how to solve that?  Thanks a lot.

Was the external disk formatted with the OS X file format?
Does the disk have its own power supply?
Did it come with two USB connectors and you are only connecting one of them?

  • Seagate Expansion 2 TB External USB drive keeps disconnecting

    Hi,
I just attached a nearly new Seagate 2 TB Expansion USB external drive to my iMac running Snow Leopard, as a Time Machine drive.
The drive sits idle until Time Machine does a backup. However, the drive keeps disconnecting momentarily - I get the "your drive was not ejected properly" error message, the drive icon disappears for a few seconds, and then the drive reconnects by itself. Happens several times an hour.
Is this a known glitch? Do I need to replace the drive (it's under warranty, but still a bit of a nuisance)?

  • Can't get USB powered external speakers to work...

I'm using Windows XP Pro, and for some reason, iTunes won't play through a pair of Logitech V-20 portable USB-powered speakers. I've checked all the settings I can think of, and everything seems to be set okay. If I use WMP, the sound goes through the speakers....and if I generate a computer sound (beep) through iTunes, it plays through the speakers. However, iTunes music is only playing through the laptop speakers. In fact, these speakers have a play/pause button that communicates with iTunes....and also previous track/next track buttons that also work with iTunes. If I plug different speakers into the headphone port, they work fine....and I didn't have this problem on a previous XP Pro computer when using iTunes (although I think it was an earlier version). I'm running the latest version of iTunes. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

  • Does anyone have a USB powered external hard drive that works?

I bought a really slick USB powered hard drive to take with me when I travel. The whole reason for purchase is to have it power off the laptop. It works on all the Windows machines, but my Mac doesn't even know the drive exists unless I first plug it into a powered USB hub. If I plug it directly into the USB port on the laptop, nada-zip-zilch.
This doesn't fit the plan I had.
Any help? Anyone need a slick little hard drive? 8-)

  • Booting from USB-powered External Optical Drive

    Hey all,
I am looking to update my unibody MacBook as follows - I am swapping out my internal SuperDrive to replace it with an OWC Data Doubler bracket & Intel SSD. The Intel SSD will eventually be for the OS and apps and my original HDD will be for media.
It looks like there may be an Intel SSD firmware update I'll need to install and to do so I need to burn the firmware ISO image to a CD-R then boot from it to carry out the update. Since I'll have removed the internal SuperDrive I'll be getting an external optical drive for this and all future CD-related tasks.
So the question is, will I be able to boot from a CD in an external USB-connected optical drive? Will any possible limitation be the MacBook's fault or the external optical drive's fault?
Any other way around this if I can't boot from the external drive? I wanted to go the USB flash-drive route, but the Intel site (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18363&lang=eng) says a CD-R is specifically needed, or do they always say that? I know I've booted the Mac OS X installation disc from a flash drive before...
    Thanks so much.

You should not have a problem booting from an external USB drive (the MacBook Air does this, for example). My recommendation is to buy an external drive from Amazon and try it. They don't have a restocking fee so you can return it if your plan doesn't pan out.
As far as installing the firmware to the intel drive, is it possible to install the SSD in the regular hard drive slot first before replacing the optical drive and running the update that way? (I don't know much about SSDs, sorry). Once the firmware itself is updated, then you could put it in the optical slot like you wanted.

  • New Firewire 800 External Hard Drive and how to use old External USB Drive

    Hi All,
I have a new LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk hard drive 500 GB - FireWire / FireWire 800 / Hi-Speed USB / eSATA-300 on the way, when it arrives I plan to use it as my Time Machine Backup drive with the FireWire 800 connection. I am currently using a Seagate Free Agent USB 2.0 320 GB external drive as my Time Machine disk. The reason for upgrading is the USB drive is slow slow slow! I am not concerned about the data on my old drive and will just wipe it clean using Disk Utility. What I would like to do is use the old drive to archive iTunes 7.7.1 and Aperture 2.0 music and photographs. Can someone give me an idea how to go about doing this?
    Thanks!

Hi, yes that will copy the whole iTunes..including everything in iTunes..BUT, as you add to your iTunes on the Main HD, with the ext HD I think you will have to manually update anything added. Or dragNdrop the whole thing again.. You could also locate you iTunes music Library & just copy that across..With images once again find your iPhoto library & just copy that across..L

  • External USB drive won't mount without running Repair Disk

I have a Seagate external USB hard drive.  It's a 1TB FreeAgent drive  that's USB powered.  I use this to share data across several computers.  Every time I connect the drive to my MacBook Pro, it does not mount.  If I try to mount it, I'm told to "try running first aid".
So, I run repair disk, and then it will mount.  I just did this, and Repair Disk reported "The volume /dev/disk1s1 appears to be OK".
Any help on this matter would be appreciated.  It is formated NTFS, and I have an NTFS driver installed, if that makes any difference.
    Thank you!

Is the drive's icon on the desktop (perhaps behind another icon, which is possible if Finder > View > Cleanup is enabled)?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > General > External Disks checked?
Is the drive listed in every Finder window's sidebar?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > External Disks checked?
Are Time Machine backups to the drive happening on schedule?
If not, does the drive appear in System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk?
Can you open /Volumes/Mac-Mini 2/Backups.backupdb using Finder > Go > Go to Folder...?
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? Is it (or can it be) mounted there?
Have you tried to plug it in to a USB port on the Mini (not a hub) or into a different USB port on the Mini?
Have you tried this: shut down; unplug the drive; boot the Mac; after you have logged in and the Finder is done populating the desktop and menu bar, plug the drive in?

  • Macbook does not recognize external USB drive - except when booting with CD

    Hi all,
I recently swapped my Macbook's internal HD (Toshiba 100gb 5400 rpm) into an external USB enclosure (Eagle Consus). The computer does not recognize the external HD, even when using two USB cables for extra power. No luck with safe mode or resetting PRAM. Disk utility just hangs with spinning wheel if I start it. Switching the USB ports does not help.
I thought it might be a power problem until I noted the following:
1)The external drive works fine if I boot the Macbook from the Mac OS install CD... with this I can run disk utility and scan the drive with no problem
2)It works fine on an old Mac Mini with only ONE of the USB connectors plugged in
3)The enclosure worked fine on the Macbook when I had the new drive in it (320 GB 7200 RPM) while copying the files over
    Any thoughts?
    Many thanks,
    --T

It is actually using a power supply, yet it will not actually power on unless it is connected to a computer's USB port. At least this is how it works on my old desktop running Windows 2000. When you disconnect the drive from Windows, or put the machine in hibernate mode, the device actually shuts down. It powers back up once the machine wakes up from hibernate mode.
It's a somewhat older device which predates the Macbook Pro, but it claims to support older Mac, such as the G3, G4, G5, iMac, iBook. OSX 10.0.4. So perhaps it's just too old?
    It's a Buffalo HD-HB250U2 (250 GB).
    So you're in Japan too?
