  • OS X and Arch dual-boot on MBP - bootloader error

I have a Macbook Pro 9,2, and I dual-boot OS X and Arch. My main Arch partition is encrypted with an LVM on LUKS setup, and my main OS X partition is encrypted with Firevault 2. I run the vanilla Arch kernel, and I use xfce as my DE. I use refind as my boot manager, and grub as the bootloader for the Arch partition. This setup has worked flawlessly for several months. I update my Arch system once per week, and last Sunday was a large update since xfce got a large overhaul (in terms of program and config files). However, since the update I cannot boot into OS X (I am posting this here instead of an OS X forum since no change occurred to the OS X system so the problem must be with a change to my Arch system).
When I attempt to boot into OS X, I am asked for my password to decrypt the partition, but then I get the following error message:
efiboot loaded from device: Acpi (PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1F12)/SATA(0,0)/HD(Part3.Sig698A

    *Hit any key to continue*
When I hit a key, I get taken back to the refind menu. If I choose OS X again, I get the same error. This cycle can be repeated ad nauseam. Booting into my Arch partition, on the other hand, works just fine, with one hiccup. While usability does not seem to be reduced, after I input my password to decrypt the Arch partition, and before I see the tty1 login, I (since Sunday) occasionally get the following error message that I have never had before:
19.636262] [drm:crypt_set_fifo_underrun_reporting] *ERROR* uncleared pch fifo underrun on pch transcoder

    19.332176] ata1.00: status: { DRDY }
The "READ FPDMA QUEUED" line and those below it repeat a few time with different numbers following "cmd" and "res," but then after a few moments the messages clear off the screen and I arrive at my tty1 login screen and from there everything in Arch (including my now-upgraded DE) works normally. This error does not occur during all boots, but I cannot discern any pattern behind when I see it and when I do not. The OS X error and failure to boot occurs every time I try to boot into OS X.
I have learned a lot as an Arch user, but this problem is beyond me. Google has not been particularly friendly, understandably so given the peculiarity of the problem and my setup. I have not yet tried undoing the update I did on Sunday because (a) it would be a pain since there were >30 packages that were upgraded, and (b) I have no evidence that the upgrade was actually causative of this issue, though I may eventually attempt the downgrade out of desperation if I cannot find a solution. Note that the update I keep referencing did not including a kernel update.
I appreciate any advice or insight that you can offer.

I don't have much in the way of a solution for your problem, but to start with, what were the  > 30 packages? In particular, was grub/refind updated (or anything else that would likely touch your efi partition? I know from my own messing with refind, that you can potentially 'damage' your partition layout with certain commands which maybe causing osx not to boot...
Then again, the errors may have nothing to do with your arch installation and maybe indicative of a different problem all together. Normal procedure is at this point is to backup your complete disk (clone/mirror it, read up on how to do that especially with regards to the encryption systems used), and try to diagnose for any problems the mbp maybe having.
You could use an apple rescue cd (that may no longer be available with newer mbp , I have no idea..) or maybe use a different harddisk and install osx there and see if you can get everything running 'normally' thus ruling out any funky errors with the hw.  check apple's recovery options if need be.
I guess you'll just have to fiddle about a bit and try to more closely determine what the actual problem is. and again, backup your stuff!

  • Bootloader errors during install on Macbook 7,1

I had Arch up and running on my Macbook 7,1 with / and /home partitions, and decided that I wanted to make /home larger. For some reason, it didn't occur to me to just resize my /home and OS X partitions, so I backed up and wiped Arch off my disk entirely, with the intention to reinstall fresh and copy my stuff back over. When I go through the standard /arch/setup installation process, however, everything works fine until I get to the bootloader section. I get an error with both grub and grub2. Here's a more in-depth walkthrough of the process I'm using:
--note: I'm using rEFIt, and plan to dual boot OS X 10.6 and Arch, and maybe another distro to play with--
    1. Resize OS X partition in Disk Utility (mac app) and add three partitions for Arch as FAT32 (8gb for root, 24gb for home, 1gb for swap)
    2. reboot and sync partition table with rEFIt
    3. Boot from Archboot 2010.10-1 iso live cd
    4. go through normal /arch/setup
    5. at 'prepare hard drive' section, I skip to 'set filesystem mountpoints' and mount / and /home on the respective partitions with ext4 filesystems
    6. at 'install bootloader' section, I choose grub, and choose to install it on /dev/sda3 (which I've set to /)
this results in an error message which directs me to /dev/tty7, which, in turn tells me that grub doesn't recognize the filesystems of any of my partitions and therefore cannot mount /dev/sda3.
    Variations:
I've been through this process at least 8 times now, and have tried all of the following (from various solutions I've found searching google and the forums and just making stuff up):
using grub2 instead of grub (results in a different error, which suggests that I chroot /tmp/install and install it manually, which I tried, but it was a bit over my head)
using a separate /boot partition (tried this with ext2 and ext3)
installing grub to /dev/sda instead of /dev/sda3
using parted during the /arch/setup install process to make the partitions and filesystems (it doesn't like being used for anything other than partitions, though)
using gparted on an ubuntu live cd to make the partitions as ext4 before trying the arch installation
no swap partition (this is how I had it set up originally, but I thought I'd include one in case other distros I wanted to test out were less understanding)
I even tried just copying the system files from my backup to /tmp/install during the installation, but that (of course) resulted in different IDs for the partitions, among other things.
I've really enjoyed using Arch, and I can't wait to have it back up and running again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Alright, I've tried using the most recent archboot (2011.02-2) a couple times. I selected GRUB2 x86_64 EFI. It asked me whether or not I wanted to convert my existing MBR to GPT. When I say no, it says installation was successful, when I say yes, it drops me into parted, so I just quit. My GPT should be fine as is.
My issue is that now, in rEFIt, I only get OS X and Legacy OS options. Legacy just freezes my computer. The legacy option has been there since I last tried to install, though I've tried to get rid of it a few different ways.
Should I choose a different bootloader option? Can I use the cd to boot in and fix it manually? if possible, I'd like to keep using rEFIt.

  • Unrecoverable Installation Error while installing CUPS 10.5

    Hi community,
the next great issue at this installation:
See the attached screenshot, i´m running into an unrecoverable error within the installation routing from CUPS 10.5 on a UCS-Server, BE6k.
It happened several times, i did:
Remove the machine completely from ESX
Deployed freshly the OVF for that persence server (cucm_im_p10.5_v8_v1.0.ova, also fresh downloaded from cisco)
Choosed "BE6K for 1000 Users" in that following dropdownmenu
Installed four times with the included ISO, whoch i mounted in that fresh machine
Tried two times already with the freshly downloaded and modified to bootable UCSInstall_CUP_10.5.1.12900-2.sgn, to save me time for updating it or avoid errors with the .ISO file on the datastore. BTW with checking media i couldn´t find any problems on the included one, also not the modified one. Both should work fine.
In any case i run in that error, several times, after quite a while having to wait for installation routine. Very frustrating...
Has perhaps anyone some ideas how to handle that problem? First time i encountered such an error, and i did some Presence-Installations before. No idea whats wrong.

    Hi,
I face the same issue and I don't know what is happening.
is it the first time you install CUPS in this cluster ? or you are recovering the CUPS ?
the first time I install the server, I didn't face any issue. when I tried to install the same server for the 2nd time, it didn't complete.
I think it is a bug with this image.
One more thing, try to change the hostname of the CUPS in CUCM pub, and reinstall the server.

  • Bootloader error 17

Here is my problem I have with the bootloader installation. In my system I have 4 hard drives. The first one contains windows 7, the second is just for all the data, no OS in it, the third hard drive is empty and also the fourth hardrive is empty. I start the the installation of Arch and everything goes ok, installed it in my third hard drive also when the bootloader is installed it says install of bootloader succes. When I boot the computer I then got an error, error 17. What is going wrong, i tried to do the installation several time but the same thing happens. I install the bootloader in the first hardrive /dev/sda. It so hard today for an OS to install the bootloader without problems?
    Thank you

I followed the guide on wiki and same thing again. Why this happens with the bootloader. The only time I was able to install the bootloader on Arch I screwed my windows installation. I couldn't repair the windows Installation. I started again a fresh windows installation, then the Arch installation. Now Ithe bootloader gives an error.

  • Iblock failure results in unrecoverable EDVR error

    Hi,
I'm using the GPIB-ENET/100 modules to communicate with GPIB devices. I have 2 computers talking to 1 GPIB-ENET/100 unit. During startup of both computers, there is a heavy GPIB comms from computer #1, and if computer #2 tries to talk, "iblock()" fails with "ELCK" error. If I wait and try "iblock()" again, I get an "EDVR" error and I'm basically through.
Any idea what might cause this? Am I using iblock correctly?
    Thanks!
    Joe K.

    Hi Joe,
It sounds like you are doing things properly. You use iblck to gain exclusive access to the interface. The ELCK code should be returned because the other computer has control of the system. I am not sure why you may be getting an EDVR error the second time you invoke the call. A possible workaround may be to increase the LocKWaitTime on the requesting computer and wait longer for the first computer to finish.
    Hope this helps out!

  • CS4 601 Unrecoverable Indexing Error in INDEXING.RPLN

I have a 100 page document with indexes.
It appears to be having indexing problems. With at least one index entry, when I try to delete that index, Indesign just crashes in the INDEXING.RPLN module.
If I try to output the file to an INX file to reload, it again crashed in the StackHash_fd00 module.
When I open the indd file, it allows me to attempt to "recover" the file, but later just says, "the file may be damaged."
This file has problems under XP and Vista.
Worst, case, is there any way to delete all the index entries and start again?
    Any ideas?
    SC

OK. I have even gone so far as to delete all the pages in the document (so I can preserve my Master Pages) and save as a TEMPLATE.
Now if I open that new template file, and check on indexes, I still have the full set of indexes (but no pages or text). It will still generate a full index bases on ZERO pages. There is one particular index entry that will crash INDESIGN CS4 601 100% of the time when I try to delete it.
I tried to remove all indexes from the document with a find/replace using the pullout menu item of index entry (^I) but it returns NOT FOUND.
Is there any way to just kill off the index? Argh!

  • I am receiving a unexpected and unrecoverable problem error a cannot get Photoshop cs5 to work

I read in one of the post to delete roaming profiles -  could someone give clear step by step instructions on how to delete the roaming files?  I searched google and keep get answers about servers -  running windows 7  Thanks

Deleting "roaming" files sounds like a terrible idea. On Windows, your User setting files are divided into "Local" and "Roaming". If you delete all the files in "Roaming" you will be removing all of the settings from all of your application. Everything will be returned to default. While this shouldn't be particularly damaging, as these files will just be recreated at the next launch of the applications), you may lose a lot of time resetting everything to your liking.
A much better idea is to create a new user account. The new user account will start with an essentially empty Roaming folder and allow you to test whether there is something wrong with your current settings (as stored in Roaming) that is causing this problem in Photoshop. If you find that Photoshop runs fine in the new user account, you can follow these directions to proceed: Troubleshoot unexpected behavior | User account-specific | Adobe software | Windows 7, Vista

  • Error deploying the application with Crystal Report

    Hello,
I'm using Visual Studio 2010 and I installed the required version of crystal report for it. I'm developing a windows Application with C# and Crystal Reports. The program runs correctly in the visual studio but when I tried to deploy it by adding the setup it gives me the following warnings:
    - Unable to find dependency 'MICROSOFT.VISUALSTUDIO' (Signature='B03F5F7F11D50A3A' Version='1.0.5000.0') of assembly 'crdb_adoplus.dll'
+- The 'SAP Crystal Reports Runtime Engine for .NET Framework 4.0' item selected requires 'Microsoft.Net.Framework.2.0'. Select the missing prerequisite in the Prerequisites Dialog Box or create a bootstrapper package for the missing prerequisite.     +
    - No 'HomeSite' attribute has been provided for '.NET Framework 2.0 SP2', so the package will be published to the same location as the bootstrapper.
I tried to ignore the warnings and deploy it but when I try to open the crystal report and in the program it gives me an error message then an empty report.
I also tried in the Prerequisites to choose the option : Download prerequisites from the same location as my application. but when I do that I receive the following errors:
    - The install location for prerequisites has not been set to 'component vendor's web site' and the file 'MDAC28\mdac_typ.exe' in item 'Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8' can not be located on disk. See Help for more information.
    - General failure building bootstrapper.
    - Unrecoverable building error.
of course In addition to the previous error.
I'm not using the click-once deployment.
Can you please help and advice me with that? I tried to search through the net for these warnings but with no luck of the solution.
    Thank you,

No, .Net Framework 2 is not installed. I'm using windows 7 so I installed .Net framework 4. I tried to Install .Net 2 but it doesn't install because of windows 7. I also tried to add it in the prerequisites but again with no luck in solving the issue.

  • Blue Dump Error

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x00000124 (0x0000000000000007, 0xfffffa8007504038, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\Minidump\041914-45240-01.dmp. Report Id: 041914-45240-01.

    Hi,
The error was caused by an unrecoverable hardware error which forced the operating system to stop functioning. Since the software handles the hardware Machine Check in a generic fashion we cannot tell which specific hardware component is failing. More than
likely the problem is being caused by problems with one or more of the following computer components:
    • Random Access Memory (RAM)
    • System board
    • Central Processing Unit (CPU)
    • Power supply
I would recommend you to follow the below mentioned action plan:
    1. Back up your files to avoid data loss in case of a complete hardware failure.
    2. Contact the Hardware Vendor and ask them to run advanced hardware diagnostics to determine the specific component which is failing- which as you have informed is already in progress.
    3. Recommend to update the BIOS and Firmware revision numbers to their latest.
    4. This memory dump file was not completely readable. Thus, check the Dump Settings and reset the page file (you will need to reboot the machine for this change to take place)

  • MCS 7825 & CUCM 5.1 File system error

I have 2 7825's running CUCM 5.1. Every time we have a power outage/spike or unclean shutdown, the systems do not come back up cleanly. Unrecoverable filesystem errors are most common. While I can do a reload and restore this is not the preferred way to operate. Is anyone familiar with similar issues with the 7825's? An UPS will solve my power issue but it will not solve unclean shutdowns.

i'd say to backup those servers and then use the disaster recovery CD
