Unrecoverable hard drive - have replacement. What to do from here?

Thanks in advance for your time. A couple of weeks ago, I updated the software on my wife's early 2011 macbook pro 13". During the reboot, it froze on the loading screen, and on other advice in this forum, I used Disk Utility to verify the drive. Well, it came back unrecoverable, so I purchased a shiny new SSD to replace it. I have at my disposal:
My wife's MacBook
A new SSD
Her files backed up to CrashPlan online
A windows PC to facilitate any recovery or data moving that may need to happen
An external hard drive dock that I should be able to use with the PC or Mac
At the time of the crash, the MacBook was running OSX Mountain Lion, but I'm unsure if I have a disk to reinstall it on the new drive.
Here are my questions:
Will I need special tools to remove the current drive?
Assuming the drive isn't too shot, should I theoretically be able to pull the files under her user folder off the old drive using the dock and my windows PC?
Can I locate an installer for Mountain Lion online somewhere? I can figure out how to make a bootable image if I have an ISO.
If not, is my best bet to install Yosemite and do the CrashPlan restore from there? I'm not sure if her programs will be restorable - really just worried about pics, docs and music.
Any other advice or gotchas would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Will.

You will need special Torx drivers to remove the bottom plate screws and the interior disk mounting screws.
If the drive isn't "too shot" then you may only need to re-partition and format it rather than replace it. To transfer data from it will require that you put it in an enclosure or docking adaptor in order to access it. You can't use your PC. This can be done after replacing and prepping the new drive.
No. You will need to follow the procedure outlined below. After which you can download Yosemite from the App Store.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?

ive recently updated, itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?if i transfer the movies from the external to the laptop they will add to the library without any problem so theres no issue with the laptop but when i go to add file in itunes i can path to the external but as soon as i select the file nothing happens, just goes back to itunes

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • My hard drive crashed..what to do?

    Hi,
My hard drive crashed..What should i do now? Is there a way for me to upload the content of my ipod to a new/blank itunes library (on my new hard drive), eventhough i understand that it usually works the other way around (itunes to ipod)?
    Any help/advice greatly appreciated

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

My hard drive was replaced last week on my macbook pro.  The geek squad from Best Buy backed up all my information prior to replacing the hard drive.  They reinstalled everything on the new hard drive including iTunes.  When I opened I tunes, i had some but not all my songs listed.  All my playlists and purchases were missing.  I attempted to sync my iPod so my playlist and information would be reinstalled but iTunes does not recognize the iPod to allow it to sync.

I agree with avm5689, purchasing the Geek Squad Protection plan is a great way to protect your investment in a product that is so necessary to our everyday lives. The agent should have known exactly what steps to make the exchange an easy, and smooth process, and I sincerely apologize for the frustrating experience you received instead.
I assure you every single post on the forum from our customers is of utmost importance to us, and we are always happy to help in anyway we can. As per the terms and conditions of your Geek Squad Protection plan, you should receive one battery per the life of the plan, and you can order it simply by calling our Partstore. • Installing new hard drive / moving data / what do i need to know?

    Hello,
I am going to installing a new hard drive to replace my almost full 650 gig drive I am currently using.
What do I need to know when installing the new drive and copying all my data from my old drive to the new drive?
Do I have to keep the volumes names the same? (my internal structure will not change)
I want to make sure i dont screw anything up

I have a similar problem. I want to move photos and catalog off C:/drive to an external E: drive. Running Windows XP. I have relocated the photographs, all31,000 of them, What do I do about a catalog? What I want to do is create a new one, but every time I try, it goes back to the C: drive.

  • Do all Macbook Pro hard drives have the apple sign on them?

    Hi there,
November 2012 I bought a new Macbook Pro because my old one had beer spilled on it. I decided since I was getting a new computer I might as well as upgrade my hard drive. I bought a Seagate Momentous SSHD 750 GB. It is a hybird drive between SSD and HDD. I got my computer running on it with little effort and things were going well. 2 days ago My computer froze, which does not happen often. I held down the power button until the Macbok turned off. When I turned it back on it took me to recovery mode where I can pick between disc utility and reinstall the Operating System. I went into disc utility to verify and repair my hard drive. There were no issues. I decided re just restart my computer and move on.
When I restarted a second time it took me back to recovery mode with out me doing the *command R* prompt. I checked my disc again and this time it said that I needed to reformat my hard drive. I tried to back up all my data however every tool I used was unable to saying the HD was not accessible. I erased the hard drive and tried to do a clean reinstall of the OS. I was unable to do so. The computer just keep going into an infinite loop when downloading the OS. It would get down to 8 minutes remaining and then jump magically back to 1 hour 45 minutes. After about 8 hours of letting it do that I canceled the process.
I took the computer to a Mac Store and the guy there told me that because the hard drive was "third party" and not from apple, that Intel Macs running 1.8 had trouble talking to the firmware of those hard drives. I found this to be confusing because the hard drive worked well for 4 months with no issues. Also, I am not sure what he meant by third party seeing as apple does not make hard drives. He explained to me that "typically" the only hard drives I can use are the ones that have the apple sign on the label. They said that they could not honor my warranty because I didn't have the original hard drive with me. Once I get the original hard drive then they would fix it.
My question however now is if it is really true that only apple labeled hard drives are the only ones that will work with my Mac Book Pro. The apple store wanted 220 euros for a new 500 GB hard drive plus another 80 euros for labor. I am fully capable of installing a hard drive and I am a cheap student. I don't want to pay that kind of cash. I have looked online and there are several retailers who claim to be selling Mac Book Pro hard drives however the images do not contain an apple label. I am not sure if I am understanding the label thing correctly, the Apple guy were speaking German and English is my first language.
I appreciate any help and advice!

I have performed verify and repair on the hard drive from the disc utility and everything checks out on the hard drive. I am not getting any error messages. I am unable to load my operating system back on it however. Last night I finally was able to get past the download portion of the OS install and it restarted and brought me to a screen that shows it installing the OS. It never loads on the progress bar however. To me it seems as thought the hard drive is having trouble writing any data to itself. What do you think? I am not getting any clicks from the hard drive like it is struggling,  I am not seeing any physical damage to the hard drive and disc utility says it checks out.  Thank you for your help!

  • I think my hard drive has failed, what do I do now?

My imac G5 failed to start properly today, just getting grey screen.  I tried all the things suggested in the postings and managed to get it to the stage where I could reinstall via Time Machine etc but there was no disc to find on the imac to install the data too. Has my hard drive died?  what do I do now?

Normally if there is no bootable volume you'll get a flashing '?'. It doesn't sound like you are getting that far. I suggest following the steps in this article to rule out some other common causes of gray screen.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
If you still have your Install discs that came with your iMac you can boot from them, then run the Disk Utility application by pulling down the Utilities menu once you select the language. The Disk Utility application will tell you whether your hard drive is visible to the system, and then you can verify whether it is functional.

My win8 pc hard drive failed.  After the hard drive was replaced, I copied iTunes Media backupfiles from external hard drive (Karen's Replicator backup software was used).  ITunes does not recognize these back up files even though the location is the same as cloud & recently burned music that does show- help!  The backup files consist of 34,000+ songs; almost all burned from my own CD collection.  I do have most of the songs on an ipod classic but hesitate to try to restore from that.  Can someone tell me how to get these 34,000 songs to show up in iTunes?  Thanks!!

This diagram shows how a typical iTunes library ought to be set out (click on it to enlarge)
The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.

  • How to reinstall iWork '09 (part of Mac Box Set) after recalled mac hard drive was replaced?

    imac 27" late 2009 OSX 10.8.2
Have spent a week trying to get iwork opened ( use Pages for my business ) - read almost every support, tried all options to no avail - earlier restore using Time Machine after affected Seagate hard drive was replaced no charge.
The error message reads: "Pages cannot be opened because of a problem. Check with the developer to make sure Pages works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple."
Can any one confirm a simple ...
    1)
    2)
    3)
    4)    answer
or am I better to $buy another box??
Unfortunately I find the multitude of support suggestions too beside the point - yet to sight a sound solution!

    Hi Kappy -
Yes, thought you had the answer  ....  but .... NO  !!!
I purchased Pages to upgrade but no go .... alas .... message, should have guessed it? ....  yes -
'Pages already installed on this computer. Choose Software update from the Apple menu to check for available updates !'
HELLO ?    I have no software updates or even record of purchase.
I now realise this matter will never ever be resolved .... soooooo .... plan B -
    1) I will sue APPLE for $US80k because my business is based around PAGES and has lost approx $US15k to date over 31/2 weeks - unfortunately, this loss of opportunity will quickly balloon with 2012 closing.
    2) If recompense is not forthcoming by negotiation I will initiate a campaign on all Social Networks to let the world   know that Apple may sell you an unreliable toxic hard drive which will cost your business a truck load of money    .... they openly admit that some of their 1TB Seagate hard drive's ( probably millions ) sold in an historic space      were corrupted and should be replaced free of charge. Hey, that's the worry free bit ! I employ people who need      to be paid! I didn't order their belighted hard drive!!
    3) Failing which I will link with another operator and retain my campaign for $repayment from APPLE.
    Accumulate.

My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different. When I look at my backed-up iphoto library folder I see lots of files and folders: ALbumData.xml, Attachments folder, etc. The 9.6.1 iphoto library doesn't appear to be a folder at all. Help!

iPhoto 6 and earlier libraries were regular folders with the kind of files your reporting.  With the advent of iPhoto 7 the library folder was changed to a package similar to the application packages but have essentially the same files and folders inside.  There's no reason to have access to the inside of the iPhoto Library so Apple changed them to packages.
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto Library from before the HD crash.  If so restore it to the Pictures folder in your Home folder.  If you previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 or earlier download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.6.1.
